- Have you been writing the same drum parts over and over again? Are you looking for some new patterns to add to your arsenal?
You’re in luck: the answer to your problem was right under your nose this entire time.
In this quick video lesson, Dorothea Taylor shares five less-popular rudiments that you can use to build into your drum parts.
0:00 - Intro
Dorothea has decades of experience teaching and playing marching snare. These rudiments deserve more love, and they may be just what you need to upgrade your drum fills (and beats and solos), whether you keep them on the snare drum or move them down the toms:
0:33 - 1. Single Ratamacue
The single ratamacue pattern sounds like ‘ra-ta-ma-CUE’, with an accent at the end. Make sure you get a nice clean drag on those grace notes.
2:08 - 2. Swiss Army Triplets
Flam-right-left. That’s the Swiss Army Triplet!
3:35 - 3. Double Drag Tap
It’s in the name: two drags and a tap. Double Drag Tap.
4:37 - 4. Drag Paradiddle #1
Drag Paradiddle #1 starts with a single stroke. Then a drag takes you into the paradiddle.
6:08 - 5. Grandma’s
This hybrid rudiment (meaning it’s not found on the list of 40 standard rudiments) consists of a paradiddle with an accent on the second note, followed by an accented tap.
Remember to practice all of these slowly and regularly until you have them clean and tight.

Cool grandma! I'm a fan! Im always looking up to you, a drummer girl also like me. Thanks for your life. You're a LEGEND
This is a much better video showcasing Dorothea’s skills than the previous ones. Really hammers how useful rudiments are
Thanks, Gil!
Thank you 😊
Dorothea is as good a teacher as she is a drummer - awesome on both accounts. Really enjoyed watching this, thank you :)
Cheers!
It's 2022 and the world FINALLY understands how to play Ratamacues - thanks to Dorothea!
It’s amazing how you can a basic rudiment and turn it up. Just started learning (at 59) and learning so much. All these tips are making it more fun.
Thanks
I love her so much. She has such solid chops and plays so well on top of having an amazing personality. Absolutely awesome.
Honestly don't know if Dorothea is a better drummer or a better instructor. I'm a musician, but not a drummer and the way she explains techniques and how to apply them is top notch!
both!
As a former marching band player, I love applying rudiments to the kit. In both grove and fills contexts.
Dorothea you rock! One of the basic rudiments I find a lot of people don't play correctly is a flam..more often than not it's played more like simultaneous notes played with both sticks rather than the grace note and primary note combination. I was taught long ago to hold the grace note stick about an inch or inch and a half above the head, the primary note stick almost straight up, and simply let them drop at the same time. The law of physics (the grace note stick will strike the head just before the primary note) guarantees a proper flam. I play snare drum in two pipe bands and proper flam execution is one of the first rudiments I teach my students. Excellent video I'll bookmark it.
Glad to hear you find it useful!
thanks for the tip sir
Dorothea is my favorite drummer on drumeo. Her skills in rudiments and drumming are very inspiring, and I feel motivated to really get my rudiments down after seeing her play
Can we get a video of Dorothy absolutely smashing out a crazy rudiments inspired drum solo?
Lady's a legend in my eyes.
Love Dorethea and her being a proponent of the Rudiments. Great teacher !!. Best Grandma ever!!. She is 1 year older than I. In 2019, I was able to resurrect my playing drums after 50 Years (1969). Watching her and the many other terrific drummers on this and other Channels, has educated me immensely. I don't play GIGs, only recreationally, playing about 1 hour a day to My Music at Home: CCR, Mellencamp, Stones, Beatles, Clapton, Winwood, Cars, Talking Heads, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and many more, including Linda Ronstadt & Bonnie Rait . Who knows, maybe someday soon, a bunch of geriatric musicians audition for a "drummer" in like age.
Dee, should give a Tuning lesson. Love the sound she has achieved form her kit! I only strive and struggle through my ignorance to get my PdP Concept Maple Kit to sound neraly as good. God Bless Dee.... you are an astute instructor.
Thank you for these! I'm a guitarist venturing into the rhythm world and it's helping my guitar immensely. Please please please do more of these rudiment videos. I love practicing these!
Absolutely the coolest grandma drummer ever, As a drummer of 3 years. I've haven't used these rudiments in a while deffinetly gonna use them more because Dorthea inspires me alot to become a better drummer and inspires many other people to take up drumming.
I've always been a big fan of the Ratamacue. Single, double, triple, it doesn't matter. A very underrated rudiment. Thank you Dorothea .
Top notch teaching and skills! So glad I found this channel
Absolutely love this, thank you, Dorothea!
Hey drumeo!! Thank you for this drum lesson😀 Dorothea is a very patient and good drummer.
Our pleasure!
Yup😀
I love Dorothea. Thank you so much. I will be working on these.
Thank you Dorothea, that was totally instructive for this beginning drummer :)
Exceptional video with great explanations. Thank you!
Onya Dorothea! Thanks! Always good to have a tip or two to try at home on the kit.
Fabulous! Respect to a wonderful drummer with great hands and a very deep pocket…😎
Love this. Amazing lady. My favorite has always been the swiss army triplet.
So good that UA-cam brings out the ladies who are great musicians with no need to label them as "female musicians".
Awesome as always, thank you Dorothea and Drumeo 😌
Thanks, Jan!
AWESOME Please more Dorothea ♥️💖♥️
I feel pretty sure I've heard at least the last three or four of them used as main beats in songs already. If I think of which ones, I will come back and add them here. Always neat seeing rudiments and how easily they can be applied, even to dif. time signatures with quite different sounds!
The way she switched to the Moller stokes on the faster Swiss Triplets! That's that MAGIC! Quality of playing that takes decades!!
Amazing feel! Such musicality!
Cheers Dorothea,Cheers Drumeo.
Inspiring.
Many thanks.
Cheers, Steve!
Thank you for the informative Teaching.
that drag paradiddle #1 🔥🔥
....thank you! So well explained! You're amazing!...Nice sounding Kit by the way!
awesome lesson, and free
Amazing drums Doreen 🥁
omg i love her... i never really got into drumming but when i had a set i would always try to be consistent with my drumming..
Great grandma 😁👍👍 nice to see your drumming 😁👍👍
Honestly I wished that Dorthea was my drum teacher in shcool when I first took up drumming at 11. She knows alot and actually teaches you how to play. Our music teacher at my shcool would complain that I was playing too loud even when I just lightly tap.
Grateful for the fact you are demonstrating these rudiments in such a uncluttered way.
I hardly practice (lack of discipline and focus, alsof because of ADD) ...this is accesible to me. Greetings from the Netherlands
Hi Drumeo and Hi Dorothea, thank you for sharing what I believe are very good exercices and new ways to improve my drumming. Cheers from Switzerland, the land of the Swiss Army Triplet...
Yeah! Thank's a lot.👍😎
So amazing!
YAAAAAAY! More Dorothea!!!
Gosh. She makes it look so easy. So much discipline. I would just sit there and go nuts like Animal from The Muppet Show. 😁
Id like to see he let loose! ANIMAL!
Great stuff!!! ❤
Very good done, we understand better, your good
Thank you!!!
Great lessons for today's
Many thanks Dorothea, you are a great inspiration!!!!
Drag Paradiddle #1 was the best for my ears! It's surprisingly wants to have some odd time musical arrangement above it when applied to the kit. Some smooth progressive melodic rocky thing :D
Thanks so much! Yeah, so much you can do with these.
And to practice I go. Thank you. Xxx
The Swiss Arm Triplets were the first thing I learned in junior high. I played the snare in band. Learned a lot of cool "bounce rolls".
I love your lessons😇
Amazing!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love it. Great!
Yes, you CAN ! ❤
Shes ike the bob ross of drumming with her, "lets just see what happens" approach to applying the rudiments to the drum set. The kit is her canvas.❤🥁
What a talented lady, I want to learn!!
Go for it!
Thank you!
😮waaaaaa!!! 🤘😁 Thanks a bunch for your time love!!! AWESOME 💪✝️❤️🌞✌️God bless!!!👍😉
This is amazing, you're amazing.
She’s amazing!
Love #4 the Dragon-diddle.
Rudiments seem tedious at first but once you master them you can make real cool fills with them. But it takes time to get them really up to speed.
Badass as usual🤘🖖
Very cool lesson 😀👍👍👍
Excellent video
Boas aulas, good classes.
I just love it
excellent!!!!!!!
Oh, I love this girl's drummin' ♥
Thank you, your awesome
I'm looking forward to trying these rudiments on double-kick. [edit]: (Particularly the double-drag tap, which would sound super heavy!)
That beat after the single ratamacue was really funky. I'd like to see some funk-orientated stuff from Dorothea.
You are an inspiration
Esto es cuando tu abuela viene a decirte como se debe tocar la batería.. excelente!
That drag paradiddle is heat
THANKS
Great!!!
Rudimental drummers are cool. Sometimes the grooves they play seem a little tight for my taste but I do enjoy how they unlock tougher Polly Rhythms through simple sticking patterns. This is what I find most useful about learning all the rudiments at various tempos
She is so amazing
Thx more please 😉👍💯
Like pa-ra did-dle and mamma pappa for a 2/4... 💙 Love your vids
Thanks
excellent video !
Thanks!
De lujooooo !!!
I LOVE HER!!!!
i'm a guitar player but seeing gramma dorothea play the drums that shames most metal drummers makes me wanna play the drums too. 😋
I'm just imagining a situation of street entertainment that had a drum set and that random people came up and played the drums and Dorothy walked up and everyone scoffed and then she shredded the hell out of it. I would love to see that video!
Rarely here an American (someone will tell me she's Canadian now) call a drag a drag, usually they say Ruff. Interesting! Is this a generational, regional, or genre specific thing? In England I've never heard anyone call a drag a ruff, half drag, 3 stroke roll etc. When we say ruff we mean 4 stroke roll, 3 as an ornament and one principal note. 🤔
Love a bit of Dorothea
Most people can play a beat but it's the proper drummers that take the time 2 learn the rudiments
Dorothea is amazing! That kit sounds great, what snare is she using here?? 🤔
Magnificent.
You are the only woman I like in the world now! Thankyou
Dorothea is absofuckinglutely AWESOME! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
That kit again... ❤️
What kit is she using?
@@camakazee Tamburo. Italian brand :)
For me learning to play is what I need to put in, and what I need to leave out.. You can't learn everything, there just aren't enough hours and you cannot remember them all at once. Plus, they are pretty boring sometimes.
These seem to have qualities relevant to most rudiments and I am thankful that I can narrow them down to 5 now.
I started playing parradiddles as triplets and just doubling the last and first note on each hand, so rlrlrlrlrlrllrlrlrlrlrlrrlrlrlr etc. It just seems more natural and I find the triplet feel is easier to play and I am picking up doubles, and I want to play this whereas rlrrlrll gets old fast.
Dorothea is the ultimate drumming queen.
I loved her on jimmy fallon, she’s a great drummer!
Sweet!! Does she go on tours or she is doing it for fun?
