  • This video, suggested by our viewers, is intended to draw attention to the problem of facilitator control in a technique called Facilitated Communication (FC). FC is known by many names, including Spelling to Communication (S2C) and Rapid Prompting Method (RPM).
In this video, Ben Breaux and his facilitator, Sara, participated in an Autism Society of America interview using FC. The translucent letter board allows viewers to see where Ben touches the letter board with his outstretched finger. The question is: Do the letters/words called out by the facilitator match where Ben touched on the board?
To date, there is no scientific evidence that proves proponent claims of independent communication. On the contrary, reliably controlled tests show that facilitators, and not their clients, are controlling the messages obtained using these techniques.
Many organizations, including the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) oppose FC/S2C/RPM, citing concerns about facilitator control, lack of scientific evidence, prompt dependency. lost opportunity and financial costs, and potential harms (including false allegations of abuse).
