This educational video is intended to draw attention to the problem of facilitator cuing in Facilitated Communication (FC). FC is also known as Spelling to Communicate (S2C), Rapid Prompting Method (RPM), and, as seen in this video, Speaking With Eyes.
In 2018, the Department for International Disabilities posted a UA-cam video featuring Jonathan Bryan and two facilitators spelling out a message using a plastic letter board held in the air. They claim that Jonathan can "speak with his eyes," but who is really doing the communicating?

To date, there is no reliably controlled evidence to prove proponent claims of independent communication. Rather, research shows that facilitators and not their clients are controlling the FC-generated messages.
Organizations such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD), among others, oppose the use of FC/S2C/RPM, citing concerns about facilitator control, prompt dependency, lack of scientific evidence, financial and opportunity costs, and potential harms (including false allegations of abuse).

It’s hard to look at. Putting someone in a position that he can hardly breathe, manipulate him like a puppet, and pretending that a lie can be true…

Great analysis on how Etran can be done properly and how in this case it is being misused such that he is not authoring the messages.

Thank you. This one makes me particularly sad.

Why are they torturing this kid? He looks miserable. It is wishful thinking for the facilitators-- that is so obvious to me

I find it one of the hardest FC videos to watch. I don't know how anyone could watch this and not think Jonathan is suffering.

I'm glad you are getting to this person Janyce, I've shared this link to people but I know already I can't watch this. What you are doing is so important but I know this story well and I don't have the stomach for it.

Yes, this one is particularly difficult to watch, but I felt it was important to break down why it's not likely he is the author of the messages, since a surprising number of people believe that he is "speaking with eyes." I also included samples of how low tech eye gaze system(s) (ETran) can be a legitimate form of AAC, if done correctly.
