We Built a Remote Control Go Kart and Had a 50MPH Runaway Land Missile *Wake Up Call*

  • We've wanted to build a remote control go kart for years. Specifically, our friend Michael had the idea to build a RC go kart after Ike flipped the 670cc Lawn Mower. The goal was to create a remote control system that we could adapt to different projects so we could perform un manned top speed tests. In today's video, we build a remote control go kart with a built Tillotson 212cc engine producing around 15 horsepower. Wanting to test the go kart before the sun went down, we skipped a bunch of safety features and testing, and Ike volunteered to get on it to drive himself around his yard. Instead, the radio controlled go kart went full throttle, accelerating Ike to at least 35MPH in a gas station parking lot and crashing into a curb. We are extremely lucky that no one got hurt and nothing got damaged. From now on, we're adjusting the throttle cable so that max throttle on the remote = barely above idling, more safety features, and testing UN MANNED in a wide open field.

Destroyed the door and inner door frame. C&C were lucky to have a wake up call that didn't get anyone hurt or cost you $1000s in property damage.

I been looking at some of the junk tractors around here to play in the mud with. Theres only 1 with a 4x4 front axle, but its much bigger than the smallish ones that I see being more fun. At one point I had a kinda flash in my head of putting it together sorta backward - the bigger 4x4 front axle as the back of the smaller tractor - so the tall skinny back wheels (on the smaller one), would then be the front. . . . .I'm seeing it again - and that mud pond is lookin fresh.

  • @davidpearce1995
    @davidpearce1995 4 роки тому

    Isaac, fellow NCian here, the motor is a universal motor. The field is wired in series with the armature. They always spin in the same direction. Only way to change that, is to swap the wires to the brushes (but not the field). Depending on construction, it may be easier to swap wires on the field. Just depends... typically the brushes are wired between the two field poles, so brushes are the way to go. Lionel trains used a similar type up until they switched to the permanent magnet can motors.

    • @davidpearce1995
      @davidpearce1995 4 роки тому

      Starters are wired the same, BTW! A starter motor, unless it has a set of permanent magnets, will always turn the same no matter the polarity (unless it is a shunt wound motor).

    • @davidpearce1995
      @davidpearce1995 4 роки тому

      Another name for a univesal motor, is "series-wound". They also have the neat property they will run on AC as well, as long as the frequency is realtively low. A DC specific one without lamination in the field iron would heat rapidly, but it should develop nearly full torque.

    Glad Ike did not get hurt! Makes me reconsider using RC parts for throttle control on my project.
    As far as making the thing safer, i'd suggest a cruise control motor/actuator for throttle since it's already meant to do exactly that. Wiper motor is way too slow for something this crucial. Should be about $40 at a junk yard, about $5 at a scrap yard. Physical dead man switch is a must, kill switch on the transmitter is not enough.
    And please no more of that "it only sorta works, so it's fine" BS especially for something like this. Kinds surprised you guys did not take it out on a full RC ride with no passenger first, although i get the excitement you felt there. We need you alive and well. :)

    Guys, You guys are on a good path as someone who loves tinkering like you do and has built Radio Controlled toys out of things that shouldn't be RC.
    Use 2 motors in tandem for the steering. One push while the other pulls, this way it makes 12volt motor into a 24v and creates less strain on the system. Use smaller Windshield wiper motors if you have them. If you have VW bug windshield motors, they work really good as Servo's - Grin
    Also for the throttle. Remove the peddles from the equation as they create drag and make the servo/windshield wipers work harder eliminating responsive control of the vehicle. Directly hook the Throttle/Break cables to the servo running through the center of a spring system so the springs help return the motor to center point and create an automatic neutral kill switch if you will.
    Also, finally. For F sake, put the return spring in the Remote Control so the throttle automatically gets returned to center which will help act as a kill switch since both the spring loaded throttle and Stick on remote will center each unit to middle thus not allowing the Kart to lose control and put Ike in the kill zone again.
    Added bonus I just thought about. Add a remote kill switch, if you guys have a 2nd remote you should be able to initiate a "Buddy Box" via remote link and allow someone to have a remote kill switch via shared link thus giving control of another remote to kill or if you want to take it to the next step, give control to the other box so someone else can bring Ike back to safety.
    Great work to this point and thank you for uploading the Video. Look forward of your next round.
    Brad

    A motor that spins in the same direction no matter which way the wires are, that's a Universal Motor, can be run on AC and DC, the way to swap directions is to swap the wires to the motor brushes round, not a fault, that's just how they work... :)

    Wow, just wow. I will never forget my dad's jaw dropped when I finished an engine swap on my old ts250. I didn't turn down the throttle and I almost went through the garage wall. Always, always plan for screw ups. Murphy's law is real my friends.

    Guys, the throttle should definitely be just a servo connected to the throttle cable off the carburetor. It'll be easier than what you have, just use the PWM signal from the Arduino and power the servo motor separately. Then your wiper motor can do the brake only. I also recommend you put two wiper motors on the steering, one for each wheel but they are both still connected. Good luck, It's gonna be epic.
    Or just keep driving it because I assume the videos are behind real life and you've already got it working IDK.
    Either way, It's gonna be awesome!

    I really like the idea of having someone riding while someone else has control. Strap your friends in and send them for a ride what a rush that would be. Could be a fun time if you could make it somewhat safe.
