Watch some Isle of Man on-board unlimited class motorcycle sometime, or maybe not. It makes this look like a lazy ho hum ride in a flat open field. I experience about 40 gauge sphincter just watching it on vid, especially when they showed a few instances of hitting perpendicular fences or houses at 100+, sometimes in the AIR. The outcome of that is a given, zero chance of survival. Sorry to hear of your accident.
It kind of irritates me that movie heroes, being beat to unconsciousness, pistol whipped, cut every way from Sunday, and shot multiple times on movies vs the real life experience of such an accident. In movies they are all up and ready for the next fight against nineteen people, or more (who always seem to patiently and politely wait their turn to enter the fray, as would also obviously happen in real life :-( ) the next day, or instantaneously, rather than having the often totally life altering and restricting injuries that are sometimes permanent. Safety really should be job one in racing, and in sports like F1 and unlimited hydroplane racing they have made almost unbelievable strides.
The Isle of Mann competitors say in interviews that if they compete in enough events death is a very real and statistically significant likelihood, and many with the serious injuries that they have already sustained, some of which still compete. It seems nuts to me, but hey, to each their own. It is assuredly one of the supreme adrenaline rushes available, so I guess for some that is kind of their drug.

while it may seem counterintuitive, and look less cool, get tires for the front the same size or closer as the back. On corner entry, you are entering a four wheel skid, so you need more rolling circumference. You can try less tire pressure, but with that much speed, you run the risk of de-beading a tire.

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster 2 роки тому +2

4 wheel skid is just about the fastest you can get around a corner. And TBH it's "better" than the ass end swinging out every time.
I think they should get fronts that are the same diameter as the rears at most, but keep the fronts at their current widith and just make them square tread instead of rounded.

The Yard Dart is a ripper. Just goes to show, when it comes to this kind of track (rally?), balance is more important than hp. Smaller, lighter engine + good weight distribution and suspension will beat out heavier, more powerful carts every time. More weight = more inertia into the corners and the necessity to slow down more. Traction can only help so much, particularly on dirt/mud/leaves.

you are so right, i just love all there builds. i think my favorite build is the snowmobile go kart they built...... no wait... they just got a truck load of engines from several of there subscribers, started up 1 or 2 of the engines(poked at a couple of the others) and just gave up on all things 2 stroke and that buld they started. but i must say that the 670 2 stroke build they did in Isac`s garage was just the best go kart build EVER...... No wait... they just started that build also and then just gave up.... Yea that sound just like the best build channel on youtube.... giving up and throwing away a bunch of fully working snowmobile engines that was gifted to them from several friends/subscribers because they promised to build a racing go kart with a snowmobile engine is the stuff of a proper building channel.....

I had the idea of maybe smoothing out a nice open stretch and making a drag strip out there. An excellent way to get the true speed of each vehicle and without all the obstacles you get a more accurate reading of true speed. And it's a hell of a lot safer LOL but seriously though something that fast just be careful. I don't know it just seems fitting with the oval and then the main track with all the obstacles, I just feel like it needs a drag strip too and I don't think that driveway counts cuz it's too bumpy

Gotta give you guys a BIG thumbs up on swapping trees for hay bales around the scarier parts of that track. The footage of you guys running that Yard Dart hard from the helmet cams shows that this is a necessary next step. Actually, I've been thinking that widening the track in that stretch through the woods is a critical safety step, too, and the addition of hay bales will make the track a whole lot safer.
It is also clear that the track's condition has a lot to do with lap times. It might make sense to have more than one leader board with one for optimal track conditions, one for muddy conditions, and so on. Keep the one you have as the "best runs regardless of conditions" leader board, though. Possibly take some time when track conditions are optimal to rerun some of the projects through the course to see if they can lay down better times with the track condition being eliminated as a factor. Actually, that would make in interesting video (or mini-series of videos) for the channel. You would need to get all the projects tuned and readied for the day or days when conditions are optimal so that a lot of hot laps in just a day or two would be possible, allowing for some breaks to allow the drivers to re-center themselves and rest a bit. Multiple really fast laps without breaks would be taxing and tiring, I think, and that might cause issues with driving skills and driver safety.

A quick and dirty way to set your steering arms up for pretty good Ackerman geometry is to angle your steering arm such that when the wheels are pointed straight forward the tie rod lies on a line drawn from your steering pivot to the center of your rear axle. It's hard to explain with words but dead simple to show with a drawing.

Looks perfect. Great suspension, wheel base, weight distribution, and hp torque curve in the perfect range. Rare everything comes together so well on a floor build without hours of figuring on paper or cad. Absolutely two thumbs up.

I'm shocked you're only getting 44mph on that. I put a 125cc 3 speed auto w/reverse from a tao tao 4 wheeler on an old Murray outlaw go kart and it tops out at 43mph. Dang thing beats the hell out of my back in a field but it's fast! Congrats to Charles and Misses on the baby! Enjoy those young years because they grow up fast!

18:03 what happened here was a shift lock. To prevent it, you need to blip the throttle while the clutch is in to match the engine speed with the wheel speed. That way you will have smoother downshifts and not have these sketchy fishtail moments at high speed

Honestly with how it was executed I think it was intentional. Slow the kart and get it rotating early.

This cart is awesome! Agree with the track maintenance, I'd hate to slam into a tree at 44mph on that thing. As cool as these projects are, we don't want to see any of you guys get hurt. Ike's crash was bad enough. Maybe you should put some hay bales around the turns in the most dangerous spots just in case. This build is my favorite so far. Congrats to Charles and his wife on the new baby!

It's all about the weight!! she's light, and it's not as if the cross-kart tyres are very much bigger than yard-dart's, so it can make much better use of the available grip. looks like more fun too!

I would pay good money for a slow motion shot of that wild drift at 18:03. Sometimes I have to remind myself this is the same channel that was racing the rat rod wagon and $50 kart around the "grand prix" at John's parents' house.

For tuning, the nose of the porcelain should be white after a wide open run. The best way to read the porcelain is to cut open the plug and view the entire length of the porcelain. The only section that shouldn't be white is the bottom 0.100". The nose of the porcelain on a new plug can only be white or carbon black. The only way it would be tan is from hundred of hours of staining. If you let the engine idle for 15mins and read the plug, the nose of the porcelain will be carbon black but all that burns off during a wide open run.

with your front wheels straight, draw a line (or stretch a string) from the center of your rear axle to the kingpin on each front spindle. As long as your tie-rod end (ball joint) meets the steering arm somewhere on that line, you'll have Ackerman Steering. If the tie-rod end meets the steering arm inboard of that line, you'll have exaggerated Ackerman, and outboard of that line will get under Ackerman.

I keep tellin ya, you can get infrared lap timers for dirt cheap. The only down side would be your track layout, that you're coming back the way you came in instead of finishing the lap in the same direction. Easy solution, someone moves the ground side sensor to the other side, facing inward. My buddy used to have one a few years ago when we built up a track in his back yard
