Pizza in Its Purest Form: The Story of Lucali | Food Skills

  • Prior to opening Lucali in 2006, Mark Iacono had never dreamt of being a cook. Today, he operates one of the best pizzerias not only in New York City, but the entire world. In a rare, intimate glimpse at Iacono's life, this Food Skills mini-doc charts the chef's unlikely rise from Brooklyn construction worker to internationally renowned pizzaiolo. While walking the streets of his native Carroll Gardens, Iacono reminisces about a rapidly changing neighborhood, and unlocks the keys to his world-famous margherita pie. From studying at the altar of Di Fara’s Dom DeMarco, to serving A-list celebrities like Jay Z and Beyoncé, the story of Lucali is made of pizza lore and legend.

Just went to Lucali last night from dinner. Took a NY trip from California and this was my last meal before heading home and I have to say the food and experience was fantastic. I noticed Mark in the restaurant so before I left, i approached him and told him how awesome the pizza was, shook his hand, had small talk, etc. Very nice and humble guy. He even asked me about the current situation with the fires going on in California. Definitely recommend this place!

He's had a lot of free exposure from the Munchies series, but hes capitalized on it by making great food no doubt. But id caution against anyone thinking that the restaurant business is as rosy as it is for this man, the majority of these businesses close.

simply superman69 I think you have that story mixed up. You have to understand mob ties in NY, especially from when he grew up are quite common. He was stabbed by a childhood friend who was a mob member, and refused to cooperate with the police. He didn’t stab anybody or break the law, he was a victim. Also if he did rat out his friend, rest assured there’d be repercussions.

    • @Marathonracer

@@simplysuperman6988 You seriously need to do your homework. There are plenty of news stories on that terrible stabbing incident. Mark in fact, was evidently attacked FIRST numerous times, by a friend he knew since childhood, Benny Geritano, and was clearly defending himself, according to eye witnesses and police reports. He was slashed many times and nearly died . His attacker was a very well known mafioso, who was known to have psychiatric problems and hadn't taken his medication, according to what I read. It was a personal argument and had NOTHING to do with the mob, that started in a grocery and escalated outside on the street. Reports were that the mafia was actually pissed off at Benny for starting that shit, because not only was Mark well respected in the neighborhood, but it brought attention to them which they never want. That shows you how insane Benny was.
Fyi , the police actually charged BOTH of them with "Attempted Murder", hoping to force one of them to turn on the other. NEITHER of them talked and the charges were dropped. Carroll Gardens, in the old days , was mafia controlled and you learned the rules about 'talking' , just by growing up in that great neighborhood. It didn't mean you had mob ties. You wouldn't have talked either, unless you're an idiot, which, quite frankly, is exactly what you sound like , for reporting such inaccurate and misleading bullshit , when there were so many news reports on the incident.
They said it was just about an " debt", which was their way of not talking. Witnesses thought it was over a girl, from what I read, the divorced wife of a mob guy, who Benny ( the crazed attacker), was dating and apparently thought that Mark was seeing her. ". But Mark is happily married, according to friends, and later said he wanted to clarify the "It wasn't over a girl". Who knows if that's true, but it doesn't make him a mob guy. That was the END of it. Period. Mark Iacono has NEVER been in trouble with law enforcement or accused of ANY crime. The stabbing incident happened in 2011 and Mark was clearly the victim of an attempted murder. If you can count, that was eight years ago and there's NEVER been a single accusation, about Mark Iacono by law enforcement, since.
He has NEVER had any serious connections to the mafia, regardless of who he knows, nor has he ever been charged with any crime. He's a kind, gentle and decent guy , and held in the highest regard by everybody who knows him, from everything I've read about him. And ANYBODY who has looked up the accurate historical record, or personally knows Mark Iacono, knows that you're full of shit the way you misstated the facts, and not very bright. Or maybe you still believe in mafia stereotypes about Italians ?

Just wait to see how much things will have changed in a mere, short 10 to 20 years: No more humans cooking or serving food, with robots replacing them, Flying Taxis and Flying cars, autonomous cars, ubiquitous 3D printers, drones all over the sky delivering things, robots that look and act just like we do, only being smarter, funnier, more 'talented,' etc., etc.
Sooner or later, we all have huge changes to what we grew up with. When I think of all the greatest local places there were, growing up, I'd say 80+% of them have either been torn down or completely changed. His Dunkin Donut moment absolutely pales in comparison to what I am referring to.

When you frequent a place enough and know the owners, there is a level of trust but also respect. We got there and waited inline from I'd say 16:45 until about 17:15 until the lady came out and gave us a table 30 minutes later so really it wasn't so bad at all. The Pizza was some of the best I've ever had and it was so good we ordered another to take out. Mark was there and after I thanked him for a great experience we small talked for a while. Great guy. I would say, EARLY at around 16:30 because even though the line was small when we showed up it quadrupled in about 30 minutes. Wonderful place. Totally worth it.

I loved the show when they had Mark try a Chicago style pizza. He didn't want to admit it was good. LoL. At first he didn't want to admit it was pizza.
