    It's great when you consider all the energy and produce it costs to raise a pig, it comes back in so many products. And if you are a vegetarian for mostly environmental reasons (like I), to see that all of the pig is used (the last bits as energy), makes the industry a little less bad. And.. go Dutchie! I realise she has a bit of an accent, but its a good to hear such English that is so easy to understand. You should hear my professors at Utrecht uni teaching Environmental Politics & Management

    Yes, pigs are useful down to their last bits. But so are coconuts, palm kernels and crude oil. So it's not just pigs that make the world turning, but I like how she made the book like a concise encyclopedia of chemical engineering.

    Christien is from the Netherlands, which is 'famous' for its pigs. They are everywhere, but crammed so much that hardly anyone knows of notices. So to be certain, the numbers are these - inhabitants of NL: about 17 million people. Amount of pigs present in NL: about 12 million. Amount of pigs slaughtered daily, on average, including weekends etc.: 40,000. Amount of live pigs exported from NL daily: about 30,000. Some people call this 'efficient', others call it 'immoral'.

    Interesting. People have no idea where their products come from when they buy them and go after they used them. To make them aware of this is a good cause.

    @032125 I have no trouble finding or making most of the products listed in the book without animal products, so the death of a pig is in fact not necessary in these cases. Who says Sab611 doesn't look for cruelty-free products, too?

    It's is truly amazing we don't know what things are made of let alone how they are made. If we are going to take an animal's life it seems appropriate to use everything rather than let it go to waste. However in the factory farming context and in light of our complete ignorance this practice does not seem to uphold any sense of dignity or sanctity of life.

  • @daveyg07
    @daveyg07 14 років тому

    @thisisnotanick Very true, I wasn't denying this fact. However, before Capitalism we only made products for ourselves, our immediate family, or small community. Now, we make products for people all around the world regardless of their connection to us. So yes, our ancestors used pigs, and all sorts of animals to make basic tools and products, but we now use these same materials in ways our ancestors could have never dreamed of. And I find that to be very beautiful.

  • @daveyg07
    @daveyg07 14 років тому

    @thisisnotanick I wasn't trying to input intention on the speaker, merely trying to convey a point. It actually seems as if she's much more concerned about consumer knowledge than animals themselves.
    That's also a very morally laced definition of Capitalism you've described. I take it you imagine that "Poor nations" become "poorer" through trade? If that's true why would they trade in the first place? If, by definition, you only trade if you gain something in value.

    A nasty blow for monotheism:
    Leviticus 11:7-8
    And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he [is] unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they [are] unclean to you.

    @unkaodya I did not say I like it, but it is still a fact. Animals are more important to the survival of our civilization now, then they were in it's humble beginnings. If you look at the world as a whole, humans are very far away from being intelligent and compassionate.
    We are capable of compassion in the right circumstances, but so is most other species.

If your reasons are more of a moral nature then i would agree, looks like it can be difficult to live a modern life without being a hypocrite. But everyone's a hypocrite and you can still make an impact by reducing your consumption.

    Specialization, and by extension, trade, came into existence long before capitalism. Capitalism is a way to buy cheap natural resources from poor nations, and then selling them the refined products back at a higher price. If it's beautiful or not depends on where in the chain you are.

    One of the primary reasons why pork
    is forbidden in the Qur'an and the (Bible) !!!!!!! is that both consider the
    animal to be unclean. Pigs are scavengers and eat almost anything,
    including dirt and feces. While Islam is not the only religion to advise
    against the consumption of pork, it is the most prevalent. Some
    branches of the Jewish religion also restrict the consumption of pork.

    Poorer nations do indeed become poorer. Some of the poorest nations on earth are some of the richest in natural resources. There are so many examples of this that they are virtually impossible to ignore. Much of the world is not democratic, but rather controlled by an elite who does in fact make money out of this.
