Arkhipov was not the only Soviet officer that saved the world. On 26.09.1983, Stanislav Petrov was not supposed to be on duty that day, but another officer got sick, so he got called in. His reasoning being "why only five rockets? If US started the attack, they would've tried to destroy all USSR defences, therefore launching full scale attack would be more obvious choice, and why all the indications are coming from just one source?". He turned out to by correct. A sensor on one of the spy satellites malfunctioned and mistook some natural phenomenon for missile launch. Only Petrov's cold blooded decision kept two superpowers from destroying the world that day

Sometimes, being the only person to disagree can help things. Standing alone (especially against peer pressure) is needed. We need more people like that. You might save the world.

As XO aboard K-19 (Hiroshima//the Widowmaker) he was responsible for preventing a nuclear meltdown on the subs reactor, leading to the deaths of the reactor crew a month later. I’m not sure he understood this, but it seems he, unlike many, realized that nuclear bombs don’t kill their victims instantly…it’s an agonizing, retched death that no human deserves to suffer, not even your worst enemy.

I doubt my comment will be noticed. But I wanted to say that my grandpa was on the destroyer (USS Cony DDE 508) that dropped the dummy depth charges on B-59 submarine. I always read about them being "depth charges", but my grandpa said they were actually hand grenades stuffed inside of toilet paper rolls -- which dissolved and detonated after being wet for so long. The Destroyers guns were aimed at the submarine, but the captain yelled at the crew not to shoot. They gave food, water, supplies to the Russians aboard the submarine. I was able to get the bronze plaque from the USS Cony, which is unique to each navy ship. It was displayed on the bridge of the ship back then, but I gave it to my grandpa.

He has single handedly accomplished the greatest feat in human history, saving the world.
They need to make a movie out of this. Unbelievable.
I would disagree when he said nobody cared about the date. It was an obvious and well enough known contender for a movie and so they already did make one. In 2000.

@ScarletDespair the US who are responsible for the deaths of millions upon millions of innocent people? Yeah they're real angels ain't they. Not defending the USSR at all lmao but the USA and the USSR are as bad as each other on a global scale
@ScarletDespair YANKEE ALERT
Never liked USSR either, but US did use nuclear weapons twice and somehow nobody nowadays accuses them of doing so, unlike Germany, which till this day feels guilt for what the known mustache guy did over 70 years ago....double standards?

Well he did know. He knew if that if he authorised the nuclear missile launch that the Americans would respond and the world would likely be destroyed. The other 2 onboard the submarine simply didn't care.

Sometimes, being the only person to disagree can help things. Standing alone (especially against peer pressure) is needed. We need more people like that. So many people will be afraid to speak up, and stand against the grain, especially against people they know. But it’s good to voice something different. It’s good to be different sometimes.
You might save the world.

First, 1967 Vasily Arkhapov decided to not deploy a nuclear torpedo towards US Navy.
Second, 1983 Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov commander of Russian strategic rocket forces decided to not calling USSR general secretary because he insist that all of those launches are just false alarm.

Товарищ yeah but it’s not the most noble thing, like the original comment is suggesting , it’s just not going through with your nuclear annihilation
edit:spelling
Vasily Arkhapov, a lad who understood the dangers and consequences of nuclear fallout, radiation and how they can effect humans.

Because lots of leaders want to manipulate the situation into their selfish ways.
