Thousands of veterans in the US: yeah about that...
We will all be forgotten no matter what we do.
I must thank this man for if not for him, I'd probably either be dead or living a desolate life. I was born like a month before he did the honorable act. Huge respect and deeply grateful for him trusting his gut.
Wow, I cannot believe I had never heard of this story. Thank you so much for highlighting it and I cannot imagine what a debt the world owes to Lt. Petrov!
New title: Bad coders almost ended the world.
Y tho
Bad code*. You don't have to be a bad coder for there to be bugs.
Its not a bad coder. Even the best coders in the world have 1000s of bugs in there programs.
My thought exactly
That's not bad code. It's an insufficiently designed filter. It's the math behind the filter and the fidelity of the code representing that particular design. Either aspect or both could have been incorrect.
Dagogo: "Get comfortable..."

There is also this commander who refused to fire a nuclear torpedo at a US fleet.
Vasily Arkhipov. The courage of this one man and just sheer luck that this man just happened to be on that particular sub saved the world from Nuclear war 20 years before Petrov here.

Even though I've heard this story many times ColdFusion has a special way of writing the script that could captivate anyone
Also, a man named Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov prevented an all out nuclear war from happening during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Well, no, actually we would've gotten FreezingFusion because of nuclear winter. ;-)

@@PuppetierMaster exactly
This is yet another flaw in an inexhaustible list of flaws we find in Soviet communism. It's also instructive of the demented standing philosophy of all forms of despotism: when reality points out a political shortcoming or errors in protocol or ideology, always use propaganda and brutal oppression to alter reality to suit party lines.
That's how Russia treats it's people
The "western enemy government" did not do anything. He received awards from private entities.
Moreover, looking at the Snowden case, both governments doesn't praise people who make them look bad.
13:02 Thank you, Mr. Petrov. I learned this story years ago, and wrote a song about it
Wow! Thank you for honoring and recognizing arguably and most likely one of the most important human beings that ever lived.... It just goes to show how utterly insane the military complex truly is and how their immature adolescence could and possibly might destroy everything "normal" human beings hold dear... Vasili Arkhipov, let's not forget what he also did during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
When clicking this video i thought ^^ would be the topic.
What did he do there?
@@eskanderx1027 he was an officer in a Russian submarine that could launch nuclear warheads at the US. The submarine was being harassed by a US ship with depth charges. However those in the submarine thought they were under attack. A nuclear launch was planned which required 3 officers to agree, 2 officers signed off on it but he didn't. You should do a video on Arkhipov. Having read about both of the incidents, I believe Arkhipov's situation was a far closer call, and far more dependent on his own judgement.
To this day I'm baffled they don't have statues dotting Russia and the rest of Europe
agreed, arkhipov's situation was much more dangerous overall given the circumstance

I really dont think it is fair to compare who is far more superior or not as both men prevented the exact same outcome.
@@KishoreKumar-uz8ir neither does your statement make any sense, nor is it accurate. Firstly, of course it's possible to compare two different things that lead to the same outcome. Secondly, I was not offering a comparison - I offered only my opinion.

Man this gave me goosebumps - respect to this legend
He didn't "stop" a war, he prevented it. To stop something, it has to be already started. Nevertheless, we're lucky someone like Petrov was at service this night, he deserves all our appreciation for us still being alive.

Thanx Stanislav Jevgrafovitj Petrov! World Hero!
Thank you Petrov, the world owes you our eternal gratitude for saving our lives.
After the US bombs would've reached their target, the Soviet Union would've had enough missiles left over to strike back at the US. Both sides had enough missiles to destroy the earth multiple times. That's why the east and the west never went to war, it doesn't matter who strikes first, both loose anyway
something that reportedly had to be explained to Trump
What is your point? This was addressed in the video. If you are trying to say Petrov didn’t save the world, you are wrong. If he trusted the warning system and told Russia to strike it would have started the chain reaction that you spoke of. He didn’t tell Russia to strike, so he prevented that chain reaction that would have destroyed the world.

Genius and insight. What an awesome combination. I am so humbled by this great man.
Let us hope there's no false alarm on the warning system in North Korea
Pragmatically, the US could easily wipe North Korea off the face of the Earth
Even if they did use their nukes they cannot even fathom having the same nuclear force the the us or the soviets have to devastate the world completely.
Guys... I don't care who loses or wins, US, Rusia, NK etc...
Whoever loses, the loss is on the side of mankind if you retaliate with nuclear attacks too
To everyone saying the States would destroy North Korea.. That is obvious. The danger is just firing off the nukes in general. Due to all the destruction Nuclear war can cause. Also what makes North Korea so scary is their unpredictability. Especially now with all the shit that's going on around the globe. The earth's reaching a boiling point, and the worse case out of all of this nonsense will be nuclear fallout. Probably the end of the world too.
