  • Next step was removing the pistons and replaced the rings. The oil rings have lots of oil buildup. The oil passage holes send oil to the oil rings were clogged up as well. The cylinder walls were in great condition. Replacing the rings and cleared up those holes will give the motor an extended life.

hey amazing video, i did my 1zzfe rebuilt in 2021, still running good, put close 80000km already , my issue was oil burning , now zero oil burn,
i kept the block inside car, took out head, and oil pan and took out piston, i put NPR piston and ring, my only isssue is rattle noise on acceleration! excet that noise everything perfect, how is your one running after rebuit ! thanks, waiting for your reply ,

I'm still a little confused. The car was running lean. I changed the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets. I cleaned the intake ports on the engine really well since they were sucking some oil. That's pretty normal. When i put manifolds back, i noticed my car started smoke from the muffler. It's sucking oil like blowby. That's when I decided to tear the engine apart and replaced it with new parts. Didn't solve the problem, still sucking in oil. That's when I decided to add an oil catch can as a temporary fix. With the catch can, the engine runs perfectly. Now, replying to your comment, I wonder if i have damaged the upper block where I have mentioned I gave it a good clean. I did scrap with a screwdriver. I wonder if I have damaged the upper block where it's now leaking ignition combustion in the engine chambers causing blowbys. There are no other reasons. It's working fine before besides running lean. Didn't have blowby or oil smoke in the exhaust.
I think I'll get a complete head to see if that would solve the problem.

still oil burning because before you put new ring you need to clean piston and make wide hole for oil return, if dont have oil return hole how its gona stop burning oil @@tonedubb4325

After the piston/rod install and you're turning the motor over--do you recall (roughly) how much force you were turning the motor over with?? I just completed a 1zz shortblock and noticed this motor "drags", err, takes more effort to turn-over versus other motors I've built. Just curious if that's how these 1zz's are.

It still requires a little muscle to spin the crankshaft, but it's not hard since only the pistons, rods, and crankshaft were moving. Sorry, i don't know how to describe it.

Just wish you would show how to find the correct piston ring size and did you hone it or bore the cylinders to a new diameter

Here's the piston rings i got off ebay. I honed them but i didn't do them well enough. It didn't take enough so the ring size remain same. I did them very and didn't rough them up enough so after the pistons were installed they're not properly seated. I got some blow by. I undo the vacuum hose to avoid oil sucking into the intake manifold. Now i put around 6k miles on the new pistons. I'll check to see if the rings are properly seated. I haven't checked yet. Too busy.

I only used the oil spring ring and one solid ring I left the 3 rd one off the piston will it be ok ? Thanks

After removing all the rings, thoroughly clean the pistons, the groves, and oil lubrication, installing new rings. The hard was tearing the engine apart. Rings are cheap. They may look ok, but if they were unevenly worn, they couldn't detect with the naked eyes. Now you still have oil sipping thru the rings. You just wasted all that time and effort for nothing.
Put in new rings, the rings will start to wear to conform to the cylinder walls as the pistons go up and down. You will have a perfect seal.

@@tonedubb4325 dam I was hoping I could just use the 2 oil rings , thx

@user-lo1kw8yl3i Sorry I misread your first message. I was thinking of the other rings. So you left it one oil ring, then it will not be all stable and rigid. As the piston goes up, upper and lower oil rings are designed to lubricate the cylinders wall. It may not work as efficiently with just one. Since it's designed for 2 oil rings, I would think it would flop around. If that ring breaks off, it will cause damage to the wall as well.

Did you have to gap the rings?

I put the rings where the gaps facing opposite sides to minimize the oil or blow by.
