Let me introduce u to the best guitar player (for me)… David Gilmour… ohhh man, the sounds you’ll hear from this guy are unique!!!! Songs in studio like Time and Dogs, and songs in live version like Comfortably numb, Sorrow, Keep talking(Pulse) or On an island; High hopes and my favorite Echoes (all this from Gdansk concert, some people like Pompei Echoes version, but for me Gdansk has the most beauty ending)… i have no words to describe all this wonderful songs.

Yes! Absolutely! And yet, when I listen to Mark Knopfler doing his thing with Dire Straits in their 1983 Alchemy live show, I am really torn. Gilmour and Knopfler are both transcendent guitar players, so I really have a hard time picking one over the other. I satisfy myself by remembering they both play in very different ways--Gilmour with his haunting, soulful, almost ethereal sound, and Knopfler with his finger-plucking, driving energy. So I guess I've got room for TWO "best" guitar players.

Only Michael Jackson sold more than Floyd. This album is time capsule material, the music, the artwork, the lyrics and the mystique surrounding it.
Kudos to you young man - always exciting to see a young person get blown away by Floyd for the first time. You seem like someone who would definitely enjoy doing a reaction to the full album from this song - Dark Side Of The moon. If you do, please remember it was recorded in 1973 - all analogue recordings, and digital sounds were just starting to be played around with (On The Run track is a reflection of that). You need to appreciate Floyd's lyrics too, which are so important to have up when listening to any Floyd song. The whole album ties in with Time - it's about the things in life that can "get in the way" - 2nd verse of Breathe is about working your life away, then there's Time, then Great Gig in The Sky about death (3 phases - anger, accepting and submission), then Money, then Us and Them about war and unnecessary deaths, then Brain Damage about mental illness. Yep, You have to listen to the whole album. Research is good. You may want to watch " Run Like Hell" live on PULSE, or "Echoes" Live at Pompeii and see what a truly gifted guitarist David Gilmour is. Though his "Comfortably Numb" guitar solos on PULSE are unquestionably the best ever. If you want a band closer to the style of the Beatles try the Electric Light Orchestra. I would put Jeff Lynn's song writing right up there with Lennon-McCartney.
Floyd are the heaviest band. Gilmour gets my vote for most expressive guitarist, the grandmaster of left-hand pitch bending. His solos are mostly pentatonic riffing but he had uncanny phrasing that can't be taught.
A good gateway after you do Dark Side of the Moon (1973) is to rewind a couple of years and check the live performance Live in Pompeii, namely the song Echoes. It will change your life and the way you listen to music.
I would recommend he wait a few songs before he hits Echoes. But that's just me. I have every reason to believe he'll love it, just that he should take in a couple other songs first.

Those drums are Roto Tom's can be tuned quickly by rotating the drumhead, Rotation raises or lowers the tension hoop, which increases or decreases the pitch of the drum. Each clock at the beginning of the song was recorded separately in an antiques store. Rototoms
One major difference between The Beatles and Pink Floyd you will notice is that a Pink Floyd abandoned 'love songs' almost from day one. Another is that Pink Floyd are the masters of slow build-up, transitions and they just about the only band that knew how to use backing vocals. Another difference is their phenomenal attention to detail both in their studio recordings and their live performances. Production (Alan Parsons on this particular recording) was way ahead of their time. And so were their live performances. Happy travels down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole 😊

Comparing PF to the Beatles is like comparing apples to oranges. I always think of the Beatles as opening the doors for bands like PF. There may never have been a PF without the Beatles. When PF came around later technology had gotten better so their equipment was much better than what the Beatles had. Before the Beatles there wasn’t such a thing as prog rock, the Beatles showed everyone that music can be outside of the box, out of the norm of that time. For me the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rush and few others are my favs.
The Beatles and Pink Floyd are from the same timeframe. Both started in the mid-sixties England. One from Liverpool, one from Cambridge. It just seems like Floyd was later because they lasted longer and their production was crystal clear, even back then.

Thanks for the reply! That's about the timeline I had on both bands and was aware of the reverence Floyd had for the Beatles. I always had the sense it was more as contemporaries, rather than an inspiration. I guess, for me, five years between debut albums isn't that long. I didn't realize the Beatles started in '57, though. Both bands are fantastic, regardless.

They truly inspired and opened the doors for thousands of groups, including PF to try their luck in music, and through their own rapid musical and personal evolution throughout the 60s, encouraged others to become more and more experimental and creative. I did just check again, and added to my comment above as an edit, that Sgt Pepper's was the Beatles 8th UK album, and with Nos 1-7 having been massively successful, even if it was 'only' five years, with PF working on their first album at the same time the Beatles were working on their 8th, I think the primary direction of influence is pretty clear.
Pink Floyd is by far the best band to step on stage or studio. This album spent over 13 years on Billboard top 100. Their music is an experience. Pink Floyd is far more advanced than the Beatles. David Gilmour is the finest guitarist to pick up the instrument. Really they are all amazing.
This album as well as all Pink Floyd’s albums should be listened beginning to end with headphones in a bean bag chair and good weed. Ok, you don’t really need a beanbag chair.

A near perfect reaction to Pink Floyd's "Time." Said in reference to how those like myself reacted when we first heard this song [ and much more Pink Floyd material ] when it initially hit the airwaves. The distinctive slow head bob. The "uhhh" when the song kicked it up a notch. Pink Floyd literally lifts the listener off of his chair. Or bed. Or floor. Today's youngsters are having their ears calloused over from the constant junk food music they subject them to. There is hope for this guy. But I have to believe that no ear is beyond hope when it comes to Pink Floyd. They are that powerful. Looking forward to your reaction to The Dark Side Of The Moon .

TIME is completed by The Great Gig In The Sky......( the 1 song in 2 very diffrrent parts ). From Meddle in 1971 ( their 7th album ) they established themselves as the best recording band in Rock / Pop history.....then they toured Australia in the late 1980's and we discovered they were mostly even better live. lol Time and The Great Gig are the exception, being best on the recorded version, but still gob smacking in the Pulse concert , 1994. Also Echoes, live in Pompeii 1971......an early masterpiece.
There is a documentary on the making of this album that gives a lot of insight. One key fact being, because of when it was recorded there was little to no computer assistance: it was all recorded with tapes and stopwatches. In other words this entire album was hand made in a way music simply is no longer produced. Uh May Zing

I’d suggest their Pulse concert 1994, Floyd live is mind altering experience that can be achieved without the need for substances, specifically (Comfortably Numb) David’s solo on that song is absolutely epic, the song Run could be an option as-well

You have a big rabbit hole to dig into with Pink Floyd. Pushing 70 and been listening since to them since the 1960’s-- strongly recommend listening to this album and Animals from first to last track without stopping
If you are going to discover Floyd then stay here for a while. They go through eras and it is probably best to discover them that way. Dark Side/Wish you were here/Animals. Many of my personal favourites are earlier, but they are a different band; more psychedelic and possibly harder to get into. Get used to them before going back. Above all, close your eyes, turn up the volume and enjoy...
Never interrupt a guitar solo. Dark Side Of The Moon is a concept album. It’s not just a collection of songs. It’s more like a symphony with each song as separate movements that flow brilliantly from one to the next and each building on and reinforcing the same theme from beginning to end. You identified it in the intro. The heartbeat. The guitarist is the incomparable David Gilmore. Every guitar you hear on the album is played by him. Many people think Comfortably Numb is his greatest solo, but I will always insist that Time is his magnum opus. If you haven’t listened to The Beatles, Old Brown Shoe, then you’re not really done exploring The Beatles. ❤
FYI. What's in common between Pink Floyd and the Beatles is they shared the same recording studio way back in the 60s. + the early 2 PF albums shared similarities based on the era's type of music. Welcome to the machine son.

It's interesting that there are two types of listeners to PF music. Those who appreciate the intros and those who are stressing for a drop. Yes, Joe - The "back-up" singers are always awesome for PF and if you investigate, you will see they are generally lead singers from other groups. There are three female leads on one song off this album! I'm sure people have said this is a concept album, so is The Wall. All the music is good individually, but PF has two more levels to explore - The songs on DSOTM are related both musically and lyrically and they are in a purposeful order. The Wall goes a step further and creates a story which on which a movie was based and released just after the album.
I think you need to react to one of their live performances to really understand what they are about. Their live performances are amazing. I would recommend their song Comfortably Numb from the Pulse Concert in 1994.
Live performance at Pulse 1994 of “Comfortably Numb” … music doesn’t get any better than that. The Studio version of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”. Is a class act and a journey. It is on the WISH YOU WERE HERE album. Parts 1-5 on Side One and Parts 6-9 on Side Two. I am a Beatles fan from my butt both ways, but on par with the Beatles is Pink Floyd. No one can come close to those two bands. You have excellent taste in music.
Time needs to be followed by "The Great Gig in the Sky" Those are rototoms at the beginning. And, yes, never pause a Gilmour solo. They're a story in their own right and should be listened to as a whole.
That is David Gilmore the true guitar rock God. His original black Stratocaster sold for 3.9 million dollars at Christie's in NY in 2017....not bad. The band consisted of Syd Barrett (who left before this album) David Gilmore,Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason
Yes you absolutely do have to listen to the entire album all at once. That is how it is meant to be listened to as all songs flow seamlessly into one another creating one overall theme or concept. What those concepts are is up to your imagination. But the experience is life-changing. David Gilmour is the main vocalist here and is considered amongst the most respected and admired guitarists of all time. Careful pausing his solos, it is considered blasphemous amongst the Floyd devout. 😏 Dave's solos are amongst the most iconic in Rock. Steering you away from Dark Side for the moment as you consider doing the entire album, check out "Wish You Were Here" by them next. And pay no attention to time when it comes to listening to Floyd. It loses all meaning as you are drawn into their melodic soundscapes and prose. Enjoy the journey!!
You are spot on with your first comment"Sounds like a heartbeat2. It's something you notice that runs throughout the album. Really you should listen to the album in one go can't just cherry pick songs. It's got a great flow. The females you hear are backing singers Doris Troy/ Lesley Duncan/Lisa Strike and Clare Torry who does the improvised singing on Great Gig In The Sky which really should be listened to immediately after listening to Time. You should listen to all the album in one go. You can't get the vibe until you do this. Try Live in Pompeii it's a great vibe. Meddle is great as is Animals which some say is their best album.
Other worldly is the perfect description of this song, and Pink Floyd in general. Surprised you liked it considering Beatles were mostly pop, rock n roll, where PF is psychedelic rock thru and thru. Definitely dive into Dark Side of the Moon. Then, Animals!

"The Dark Side Of The Moon" album released in 1973 is one of,... if not the best, Rock album of all time, it has sold over 55 million copies and counting. The album also has the record for most weeks on Billboards Top 100 Albums of all time list, over 960 weeks, that's over 18 years on the list. Truely remarkable! Pink Floyd also has sold more albums than any other Rock band in history,... except of course The Beatles. ELO is the closest thing to the Beatles. Jeff Lynne could've been a 5th Beatle. He was heavily inspired by the Beatles and you can hear it in his music.
You're right, George was a good guitar player, In my opinion, David Gilmore's performance is not just good, he's at the master level. To see this, you should react to their live concert videos, the songs are played the same way or enhanced since the original production, and you get to see them perform. Welcome to the World of Pink Floyd, their music is timeless, and it will capture you. A couple of things, 1. Their albums are a journey, though they have separate songs if you listen closely they fade from one song to the next. 2. You may want to read the lyrics first before listening to the songs, you'll get a better understanding of how the song relates to the album. You have to listen to the entire album in order. The album was produced by Alan Parsons. The harmonized vocals of David Gilmour and Richard Wright are the best ever. As good as the Beach Boys. It is even better on Echoes, a 20 minute song. Gilmour is one of the best guitarist ever and one of the best vocalist.
New to Pink Floyd? First off, I would like to point out that Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon" album was created as an ensemble. Intended to be listened to, from beginning to end. Listening to individual songs out of order, the context of album is lost. As for song suggestions... "Wish You Were Here" "Brain Damage" "Learning to Fly"
The Beatles weren't into 2 and 3 or 5 minute guitar solos, that wasn't their thing. They were tune smiths, it was about melodies and harmonies. Same for Ringo, when the three ask Ringo in September, 1962 John had one question for him which was "Ringo, do you like playing solo's?" Ringo's response was "I hate solo's" John said "you're in". On Led Zeppelin 2 side 2 of the Lp is one 11+ minute song titled "Moby-Dick". The Beatles didn't have time for stuff like that. I had Zeppelins first 5 Lp's and after "Houses Of The Holy" I was out, it was too predictable and Robert Plant's voice began to grate on my nerves. I have not played a Zeppelin record since like 74. I've always owned the vinyl or CD of "Dark Side Of The Moon" since its release in 73, it's one of the really all time great Lp's. That one and any Beatles Lp, the best way to listen is to take a couple of hits off a reefer, put your phones on with a great reciever or pre amp and power amp and chill. The two greatest get high, kick back and chill bands of all time. I've been listening to The Beatles since 1964. I turned seven that year and was hooked the moment I saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9th, 1964 along with 73 million other Americans. Got to see them live in Pittsburgh in September, 64 for my 7th birthday. Full blown Beatlemania was nuts. You can't explain it, you had to be there to experience it. Total insanity. Greatest and most influential band ever and it ain't even close. Peace ❤

The whole album ties in with Time - it's about the things in life that can "get in the way" - 2nd verse of Breathe is about working your life away, then there's Time, then Great Gig in The Sky about death (3 phases - anger, accepting and submission), then Money, then Us and Them about war and unnecessary deaths, then Brain Damage about mental illness. Yep, You have to listen to the whole album. Research is good. You may want to watch " Run Like Hell" live on PULSE, or "Echoes" Live at Pompeii and see what a truly gifted guitarist David Gilmour is. Though his "Comfortably Numb" guitar solos on PULSE are unquestionably the best ever.
If you want a band closer to the style of the Beatles try the Electric Light Orchestra. I would put Jeff Lynn's song writing right up there with Lennon-McCartney.
Floyd are the heaviest band. Gilmour gets my vote for most expressive guitarist, the grandmaster of left-hand pitch bending. His solos are mostly pentatonic riffing but he had uncanny phrasing that can't be taught.
A good gateway after you do Dark Side of the Moon (1973) is to rewind a couple of years and check the live performance Live in Pompeii, namely the song Echoes.
It will change your life and the way you listen to music.
I would recommend he wait a few songs before he hits Echoes. But that's just me. I have every reason to believe he'll love it, just that he should take in a couple other songs first.

DSOTM should be done in one go anyway, because it is a concept-album and all songs merge into each other.
Those drums are Roto Tom's can be tuned quickly by rotating the drumhead, Rotation raises or lowers the tension hoop, which increases or decreases the pitch of the drum.
Each clock at the beginning of the song was recorded separately in an antiques store.

One major difference between The Beatles and Pink Floyd you will notice is that a Pink Floyd abandoned 'love songs' almost from day one. Another is that Pink Floyd are the masters of slow build-up, transitions and they just about the only band that knew how to use backing vocals. Another difference is their phenomenal attention to detail both in their studio recordings and their live performances. Production (Alan Parsons on this particular recording) was way ahead of their time. And so were their live performances. Happy travels down the Pink Floyd rabbit hole 😊

Comparing PF to the Beatles is like comparing apples to oranges. I always think of the Beatles as opening the doors for bands like PF. There may never have been a PF without the Beatles. When PF came around later technology had gotten better so their equipment was much better than what the Beatles had. Before the Beatles there wasn’t such a thing as prog rock, the Beatles showed everyone that music can be outside of the box, out of the norm of that time.
For me the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rush and few others are my favs.
The Beatles and Pink Floyd are from the same timeframe. Both started in the mid-sixties England. One from Liverpool, one from Cambridge. It just seems like Floyd was later because they lasted longer and their production was crystal clear, even back then.

Thanks for the reply! That's about the timeline I had on both bands and was aware of the reverence Floyd had for the Beatles. I always had the sense it was more as contemporaries, rather than an inspiration. I guess, for me, five years between debut albums isn't that long. I didn't realize the Beatles started in '57, though. Both bands are fantastic, regardless.

I remember those days well, and there really was nothing like the Beatles before them in the popular music of the time. They truly inspired and opened the doors for thousands of groups, including PF to try their luck in music, and through their own rapid musical and personal evolution throughout the 60s, encouraged others to become more and more experimental and creative.
I did just check again, and added to my comment above as an edit, that Sgt Pepper's was the Beatles 8th UK album, and with Nos 1-7 having been massively successful, even if it was 'only' five years, with PF working on their first album at the same time the Beatles were working on their 8th, I think the primary direction of influence is pretty clear.
Pink Floyd is by far the best band to step on stage or studio. This album spent over 13 years on Billboard top 100. Their music is an experience. Pink Floyd is far more advanced than the Beatles. David Gilmour is the finest guitarist to pick up the instrument. Really they are all amazing.

The distinctive slow head bob. The "uhhh" when the song kicked it up a notch.
Pink Floyd literally lifts the listener off of his chair. Or bed. Or floor.
Today's youngsters are having their ears calloused over from the constant junk food music they subject them to.

TIME is completed by The Great Gig In The Sky......( the 1 song in 2 very diffrrent parts ).
From Meddle in 1971 ( their 7th album ) they established themselves as the best recording band in Rock / Pop history.....then they toured Australia in the late 1980's and we discovered they were mostly even better live. lol
Time and The Great Gig are the exception, being best on the recorded version, but still gob smacking in the Pulse concert , 1994.
Also Echoes, live in Pompeii 1971......an early masterpiece.

Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was recorded down the hall from Sgt Peppers & at the same time. Complete albums are very important with Floyd.
There is a documentary on the making of this album that gives a lot of insight. One key fact being, because of when it was recorded there was little to no computer assistance: it was all recorded with tapes and stopwatches. In other words this entire album was hand made in a way music simply is no longer produced. Uh May Zing

Many of my personal favourites are earlier, but they are a different band; more psychedelic and possibly harder to get into. Get used to them before going back.

Never interrupt a guitar solo. Dark Side Of The Moon is a concept album. It’s not just a collection of songs. It’s more like a symphony with each song as separate movements that flow brilliantly from one to the next and each building on and reinforcing the same theme from beginning to end. You identified it in the intro. The heartbeat. The guitarist is the incomparable David Gilmore. Every guitar you hear on the album is played by him. Many people think Comfortably Numb is his greatest solo, but I will always insist that Time is his magnum opus. If you haven’t listened to The Beatles, Old Brown Shoe, then you’re not really done exploring The Beatles. ❤

It's interesting that there are two types of listeners to PF music. Those who appreciate the intros and those who are stressing for a drop. Yes, Joe - The "back-up" singers are always awesome for PF and if you investigate, you will see they are generally lead singers from other groups. There are three female leads on one song off this album! I'm sure people have said this is a concept album, so is The Wall. All the music is good individually, but PF has two more levels to explore - The songs on DSOTM are related both musically and lyrically and they are in a purposeful order. The Wall goes a step further and creates a story which on which a movie was based and released just after the album.

I think you need to react to one of their live performances to really understand what they are about. Their live performances are amazing. I would recommend their song Comfortably Numb from the Pulse Concert in 1994.
Live performance at Pulse 1994 of “Comfortably Numb” … music doesn’t get any better than that. The Studio version of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”. Is a class act and a journey. It is on the WISH YOU WERE HERE album. Parts 1-5 on Side One and Parts 6-9 on Side Two. I am a Beatles fan from my butt both ways, but on par with the Beatles is Pink Floyd. No one can come close to those two bands. You have excellent taste in music.
On the album each song leads into the next. Like phases of your life.

That is David Gilmore the true guitar rock God. His original black Stratocaster sold for 3.9 million dollars at Christie's in NY in 2017....not bad. The band consisted of Syd Barrett (who left before this album) David Gilmore,Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason

Yes you absolutely do have to listen to the entire album all at once. That is how it is meant to be listened to as all songs flow seamlessly into one another creating one overall theme or concept. What those concepts are is up to your imagination. But the experience is life-changing.
David Gilmour is the main vocalist here and is considered amongst the most respected and admired guitarists of all time. Careful pausing his solos, it is considered blasphemous amongst the Floyd devout. 😏 Dave's solos are amongst the most iconic in Rock. Steering you away from Dark Side for the moment as you consider doing the entire album, check out "Wish You Were Here" by them next. And pay no attention to time when it comes to listening to Floyd. It loses all meaning as you are drawn into their melodic soundscapes and prose.

You are spot on with your first comment"Sounds like a heartbeat2. It's something you notice that runs throughout the album. Really you should listen to the album in one go can't just cherry pick songs. It's got a great flow.
The females you hear are backing singers Doris Troy/ Lesley Duncan/Lisa Strike and Clare Torry who does the improvised singing on Great Gig In The Sky which really should be listened to immediately after listening to Time. You should listen to all the album in one go. You can't get the vibe until you do this.
Try Live in Pompeii it's a great vibe. Meddle is great as is Animals which some say is their best album.
Other worldly is the perfect description of this song, and Pink Floyd in general. Surprised you liked it considering Beatles were mostly pop, rock n roll, where PF is psychedelic rock thru and thru. Definitely dive into Dark Side of the Moon. Then, Animals!

David Gilmour is the guitarist AND the lead singer of Pink Floyd, he joined the band in 1968, four years after their founding in London. There are no women in Floyd, but they always use backing singers bothe live and in the studio.

Pink Floyd also has sold more albums than any other Rock band in history,... except of course The Beatles. Actually, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin go back and forth in second place on the all time list.

You're right, George was a good guitar player, In my opinion, David Gilmore's performance is not just good, he's at the master level. To see this, you should react to their live concert videos, the songs are played the same way or enhanced since the original production, and you get to see them perform. Welcome to the World of Pink Floyd, their music is timeless, and it will capture you. A couple of things, 1. Their albums are a journey, though they have separate songs if you listen closely they fade from one song to the next. 2. You may want to read the lyrics first before listening to the songs, you'll get a better understanding of how the song relates to the album. You have to listen to the entire album in order. The album was produced by Alan Parsons. The harmonized vocals of David Gilmour and Richard Wright are the best ever. As good as the Beach Boys. It is even better on Echoes, a 20 minute song. Gilmour is one of the best guitarist ever and one of the best vocalist.

New to Pink Floyd? First off, I would like to point out that Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon" album was created as an ensemble. Intended to be listened to, from beginning to end. Listening to individual songs out of order, the context of album is lost. As for song suggestions... "Wish You Were Here" "Brain Damage" "Learning to Fly"
You have to look for the 1994 pulse concert You have never seen better live performances. It’s outstanding and unmatched to this day.
You won’t really hear that song for another 20 years, I mean deep down into every cell of your body and your very soul.
The Beatles weren't into 2 and 3 or 5 minute guitar solos, that wasn't their thing. They were tune smiths, it was about melodies and harmonies. Same for Ringo, when the three ask Ringo in September, 1962 John had one question for him which was "Ringo, do you like playing solo's?" Ringo's response was "I hate solo's" John said "you're in". On Led Zeppelin 2 side 2 of the Lp is one 11+ minute song titled "Moby-Dick".
The Beatles didn't have time for stuff like that. I had Zeppelins first 5 Lp's and after "Houses Of The Holy" I was out, it was too predictable and Robert Plant's voice began to grate on my nerves. I have not played a Zeppelin record since like 74.
I've always owned the vinyl or CD of "Dark Side Of The Moon" since its release in 73, it's one of the really all time great Lp's. That one and any Beatles Lp, the best way to listen is to take a couple of hits off a reefer, put your phones on with a great reciever or pre amp and power amp and chill. The two greatest get high, kick back and chill bands of all time. I've been listening to The Beatles since 1964.
I turned seven that year and was hooked the moment I saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9th, 1964 along with 73 million other Americans.
Got to see them live in Pittsburgh in September, 64 for my 7th birthday. Full blown Beatlemania was nuts. You can't explain it, you had to be there to experience it. Total insanity. Greatest and most influential band ever and it ain't even close.
