Roy was recording in the next door studio and took break to see how his friends in Floyd were getting on. He saw they were not happy with the vocals on the song and offered to give it a try. I think he pretty much nailed it on one take. The Floyd (apart from Roger) loved it and it made the Final Cut for the album. Roger says he felt that Roys vocals were a little too cynical for him and that he should have kept going and he felt he would have got it eventually - although he does not hold any grudge against Roy who was a good friend of the Floyd.

@@franknorthall5372Roy didn't want money as payment for the vocals. He wanted season tickets to a soccer team or hockey team. I can't remember which.

Roger disdain for the record company is so spot on. I had just bought one of the first Quad receivers in 70's. When at the end of the song the front channels drop. I'm PISS OFF then bleed into the next song the front channels came back. Amazing. Best album to listen to with no lights, head phones and a big fatty

Brilliant..... and Pink Floyd were quite good too!
"The Band is just fantastic that's really what I think....oh, BTW which one's Pink" 😂😂😂
If that one line was foreshadowing "The Wall" how little did we know!
As for "Welcome to the Machine".... back in the 70's Synthesisers were all very new and for many of us Pink Floyd were our first exposure, and then we realised no one else was getting close!

There's a video here on YT where PF's David Gilmour explains how he used a prototype synth to make those weird sounds in On The Run, from The Dark Side of the Moon album (1973). If I remember it correctly, he said that that very synth was laying around Abbey Road Studios since the Beatles first used it on Tomorrow Never Knows.

When and if you get to Echoes, I suggest listening to these 3 versions in this order:
1 - original studio version (Meddle album) 1971
2- Echoes live in Pompeii (recorded 1971 - please do both parts in ONE video)
3 - Echoes live in Gdańsk (2006) David Gilmour and Richard Wright.
I realize Echoes is a very long song, and doing a reaction to all 3 of these versions may not be practical for you. If you can only find time for 2 versions, then Pompeii and Gdańsk are both musical treasures.

If you want some more "very different" single tracks:-
    1. "The Nile Song" 1969 before Black Sabbath this is Pink Floyds Helter Skelter 😉
    a Proto Metal/Proto Punk
    2. "Fearless" from the album Meddle (the one before DSOTM) sampling British soccer fans of Liverpool Football Club singing their team anthem. Few lyrics beautifully crafted.
    3. "Pillow of Winds" also from Meddle, just a beautiful song. BTW "an Eiderdown" is a duvet filled with feathers from the Eider Duck, it doesn't get more snuggly 😂
    4. "Careful with that Axe Eugene" this is one of the early Floyd tracks that made people suggest when taking Psychodelics you needed Pink Floyd!

"Have A Cigar" is almost a Pop song from Pink Floyd. It definitely grooves. And while it is a mid-tempo song [ it is mid-tempo, ain't it? ], it is a busy song. So much going on in the background. Which is true in just about every PF song. But this one seems to raise it up a notch.
On to your next Floyd reaction ...

This song is set up by "Welcome to the Machine". It is a scathing indictment of the record industry who seek to squeeze every penny they can out of the naive and trusting artists, often never really knowing anything about the music or the band itself.
Did you catch the line?: "The band is just fantastic that is really what I think,
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?"
That swhoosh sound at the end makes more sense in context of the album, as the title track "Wish You Were Here" begins playing on the radio (in mono and one side only) and Mr Gilmour hearing it quietly joins in on his acoustic guitar and takes over. Everyone who hears this piece for the first time thinks something happened to their equipment. Including me back in the seventies!! Always hilarious watching their reactions.
"Welcome to the Machine" next. I think you're going to be blown away.

The vocalist on this was a fluke. Waters and Gilmour were both very unhappy with Waters attempts to sing the song, and Gilmour refused to sing it because he thought it was way too strong. While they were working on it a folk-rock singer names Roy Harper who was recording in another studio dropped by to say hi. After hearing them argue, he asked if they mind him trying it. And it worked.

Get a grip on yourself before listening to Animals, one of the darkest, anger ridden technical masterpieces Floyd produced, Roger was beginning to let his “happy depressing period” creep into his songs and lyrics, but Animals doesn’t even compare to the depths of darkness Roger produced on tape, wait until you hear “The Final Cut” the swan song Floyd product which was basically a Roger solo project by this time.

The guitar, drums and synth together play like a steam train chugging along aka 'The Gravy Train', and if you look into Pink Floyd's management they lost a lot of money through some bad investments, so this is a response, often cynical, to this time in their careers.
