    Hi there! great that you start a conversation around UX :D In my opinion and experience the core of UX Design is not Design is User Research because without it you cannot start "building a good experience". Maybe we should start calling it just UX hehe When a company hires a UX Designer they should know they will be hiring a researcher, a person with knowledges on cognitive physiology, usability testing etc and not only Design skills, this will be just a plus ;) If someone wants to be a UX Designer but doesn't have design skills they could do content strategy, information arquitecture, research etc . Cheers!

    • @FluxAcademy
      @FluxAcademy  7 років тому +15

      I disagree. You can design without research but that is like gambling - you might win, but you'll probably lose. But if you have a researcher who's not a designer, then you have a research, and maybe insights, but no way to turn them into a product. The process of synthesising insight into a product is called design :)

    • @JDragon19
      @JDragon19 7 років тому +7

      I agree. Every job or hiring manager I've seen cares more about the research aspect of UX design and less if they have pixel perfect design skills. They hire UXers because they know how to conduct user testing, create user flows, personas, wireframes and prototypes. If they have good design skills too, that's great! But the true foundation of UX should be psychology and HCI.

      it's very evident one someone creates a design that has very little insight into UI, research, IA and target audience. it might be super pretty, but it will take away quite a lot out of the value (what value does something have if the IA is messy and badly planned, so actually getting what i wanted becomes frustrating at the least?). on the other hand, a UX designer is a designer in the planning sense of the word, and is not necessarily both a graphic designer as well as a UI designer. that's the problem with hiring one person and expecting them to have profound expertise in both fields. and they are definite seperate fields, while having a lot of overlappings. just my thoughts, great vid

      fully agree before you start the visual design you have to research, ask about the customers and user's desieres and after that start to design and the end make the visual design!

      i disagree also, designer have that basic research. its stupid designer if he don't understand physiology, usability etc. all that shit are already include in their study. when jump to ux/ui he can understand very quickly. try researcher who jump to design, if his design taste suck, everything will be suck. its true. you welcome.

    I have always been into math, finance, computers and stuff like that. But I really really like this lifestyle of a designer. Not the famous UA-camr part, I can live w/o unless I am teaching a skill or something like that. But I like the freedom of working from home or anywhere that suits you. Meeting with other like minded people mid day to brainstorm and etc...

    • @FluxAcademy
      @FluxAcademy  7 років тому

      You don't have to be a designer to be working from home, remote working is becoming increasingly popular for lots of professions.

    I kinda disagree with you. I don't think the core of UX Design is design but a great problem solver. In a nutshell, you can be UX designer even if you are not a visual designer. UX is everything in a sense. of course it would be so great if you have the necessary design skills but that is mostly the job of UI designer (making it beautiful and enhancing the exprience). You're jumping two or three spaces by beginning with design when you don't even try to define you're user/customer profile first; their journey, pain points and challenges. UX in summary is somehow solving business problems. Its not just the form.

      Guess what, UX includes what a customer feels, thinks, and how he responds behaviorally when he/she first sees your product on a shelf, takes it home and opens it. It also includes how a user feels days after he has used your product and casually or excitedly mentions it to a friend. It also includes the thoughts that run through his head when he's not using your product at all, but is still thinking about it. I have a much broader view of user experience than most people and I think Don Norman, the inventor of the term and the profession of user experience, agrees with me.

    about hundred and twenty years ago, there was a man saying: 'form follows function'. if you want to make good design, then you follow this sentence. doesnt matter if you make printdesign, webdesign, ux-design - always follow: form follows function. make sure your design works. make sure its understandable and functional. the rest is understandig of the media you are working for and a bit of artistic nonsense to give your work a unique touch. doesnt matter if you are printdesigner, webdesigner, ux-designer as long you are a good designer you can master all these challenges.

  • @Designer584

    I think the core of design, let alone UXD, is understanding. Then you can utilise specific skill sets to design solutions that solve problems with emapthy and add value.

    Hey Man,
    First, I love all of your videos and content. I myself is a UX Designer and your video helped me in a lot!
    I always wanted to ask some questions to you that
    1. How much do you practice before creating a video?
    2. What and how much preparation you do before making any video?
    I think people might be interested in knowing that. I surely am! I would love to have a video on that if possible, or you can reply here as well.

    I agree with your opinion about how to get into UX design. I am fresh out of school and I am working as a freelancer as a UI designer right. Always have some issues with UX logical with my boss, but the UX designer actually is my boss. He always talking about his favorites and nothing about user experience. Sadly!

    kinda everyone will tell you that in UX design, the least ''important'' thing is design lol. I was kinda surprised when he said that design it's actually the basic. You can still be a great UX designer even if you don't do well with design... that's why we have UI designers lol

    I have to disagree - you should always start with THE USER. There is no User Experience design without the user. You can't design, when you don't know, who you design for. The visual design isn't necessary role of UX Designer - sure, it's nice, when you can also do it and bring it all to life, but your role may end with wireframes and some kind of prototype. The most work happens in sketches, paper-prototypes, excel sheets, wireframes..; but especially in solid user-research.
    But I guess that depend on what your role as UX designer is, since can vary a lot.

    Ok, what if you have a master's in information systems, a bachelor's in business admin, and you already freelance in graphic design and writing? Where would you start? I kept thinking that I wanted to do project management, but really I think I belong in either UI or UX design.

      Because I'm afraid that I don't actually know the proper steps to go through and the deliverables to give to the client. I don't actually know what a UX designer does, specifically. And I'm afraid that if I put it on my resume, they will expect me to know exactly what I'm doing. Lol.

    Which books do you recommend? I've been doing graphic and web design for years but having trouble getting into a UX role simply because I don't usually show a lot of the work as far as the decision making process. Because I've been doing it for many years, I feel like a lot of that is intuitive, or second nature to me, but I know people that are looking to hire for that role want to see that as part of the design process and not just the end product. I am though going back through my projects and sort of "redoing" and documenting everything like a ux designer would, from initial meeting notes, to research, brainstorming, strategy, ideation, sitemap, wireframing, to high fidelity mockups, interaction and final design.

      Well if you're doing websites you most likely need to learn how to code, there's software you can use so that It'll translate the design into code but if you want to have full control over the design and overall get really good at it I think you should learn, CSS, HTML, JavaScript, jQuery, maybe even some PHP and server side if you want to do things like AJAX requests, you can just look up all these things for a good start, and don't worry I'm 100% sure you'll find other things along the way, maybe learn to work on Sketch or Figma or other software to do wireframes and mockup designs so you have something to present to clients

    It is peculiar that you focus so much on the visual aspect of UX Design, while it is probably 10-15% of the job in creating a user experience. The very CORE of user experience design is user-centricity - the ability to run proper research, discover the needs and pains of the users, and build the experience around those insights. If you fail doing that, the visual design won't save your product.

    Also it's not only about the users and how it addresses their needs and what's its value proposition, it's also about the business objectives and how to achieve its goals. simpleia.com

    This is obsolete thinking and we have moved away from this kind of belief. We now know that UX and UI are completely different in that UX is left brain and UI is right brain. We now separate those roles and recruit very different profiles for each. The first time we tried this different approach, we got a huge 54% increase in conversion rates.
