Thank you so much! I had few interview this week. I’m super nervous about it because English is not my first language. Today I rewatched this video and a lot of your other videos about UX design before my interview started and used a lot of tips you suggested, and I got the offer within a day! I can’t say thank you enough!
I wish there are hundreds of like buttons I can click on. Every time I start to look for next career move, and I watch it. Your words are very useful and accessible. Thanks man
Thank you so much for taking this video! I found this a day before my 1st phone interview and practiced a lot, and finally got an offer after 3 interviews. You really save my life. Thank you so much again.
I think following your last point was what got me a UX job. Well, the interviewers and I felt comfortable with each other as the interview progressed and when I landed the kicker along the lines of what you said (Even though I felt it was corny), there was silence in the air but it was less of an awkward silence and more of that “I'm on your team now and I'm not going anywhere!”.
Thank you for sharing this!! I'm getting close to starting my interview process once I start my search into the UI/UX field so this is very much appreciated!!
Thanks so much for this great video, it was so helpful in saying the critical points without all buzzwords. Also as someone who works primarily on dental websites... You have great teeth!!
Hi Mike , amazing tips , I had used the first one , of pinpointing a time when I leaned towards this topic in my last job for pursuing masters in this area, works really well. thanks a lot for all your videos, great tips 😀
How can you say that you care about user centered design but usability studies are optional? Are you suggesting that you collect user data from other methods?
While I think it's important to prepare for a UI/UX interview, the way you phrase it "the words you should use" makes it sound like they just need to know buzz words and in the real world, that's a disaster if you don't have any of the knowledge to back up what you're talking about and people who are hiring can sniff that out right away.
Summary : 1- Tell us about yourself : * briefly touch on your background how you got started , and connect that with user center design, Try quickly to touch on the fact that I first got into ux / ui for ex. I like graphic design , I like creative things etc.. I start to go website by my own and taught myself , ( remember you are in ux / ui interview ) so briefly touch on your background how you got started , then talk about ux for ex. you can say around 2006 when I really started to understand the ux process and the important of user center design , ( user center design is designing everything based on what you know about the user and their needs ) . 2- Collaboration with your team : Try to touch on that you are a great team player for ex. I built strong relationships with everyone on the team , dev team , QA , product owners , 3- Talk about your understanding of ux process
wont lie @mike locke. I found this video 30mins before phonecall interview - used your exact words (fumbled a bit coz i had little time to practice). But they said they liked me so I made it to the second stage! #puregold Thanks again man!
As a Web Designer (non coder) it's amazing how much UX/UI work we implement into our process, yet a Web Designer and a UX/UI Designer are separate roles with huge salary differences.
yup, that is one of the first important step in order to get noticed and start your career. I myself send a dozen of email, however the amount of response I get back is quite little so I really want to know more about how a true UX designer write their email to apply for a job
Thanks for the advice Mike, I took onboard what you said and I just landed a role as a UI/UX designer. You don't know how impactful you've in my life/career since I started following your videos. You are my virtual mentor. You are appreciated!
Excellent advice Mike! Can't wait to use it when my time for an interview comes. I have yet to get one. It seems there are never any UI/UX position in the small town I live at. Just the bigger cities. Would you happen to have any advice on those that are fresh out of college? Preferably those that have no outside experience? A lot of the applications I look at say 3-4 years experience required =\
brittany smith Hi there, I recently finished my A-Levels and was wondering what course did you do in college to become a UX designer? I want to be a UI/UX Designer but I don't know where to start lol.
+Vlog Watcher, You can find ux design courses at most colleges these days. You want to look into whichever course offers material in User Research, User Experience Design (UX), Interaction Design (IxD), Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Human Centered Design, Visual Design, or Web Design. All of these are basically interchangeable terms for courses teaching UX principles.
thanks for your tips and today I receive offer as UI designer(finally!!!). The perspective of UX give me lots of inspirations to the design thinking process. appreciate :)
Can you please share something for remote video UX interviews? I need pointers for that Mike. I keep watching your video & these actually helped me a lot. Thanks.
Hackathons are a great way to gain experience in a team setting. Not many designers go to them and so when you go, all the programmers will basically fight over you. Most the time programmers are really good at coding, but have no sense of human interaction and creative ability to do UI work effectively, at least thats what I hear from programmers I've talked to.
Hey Mike, just want to say thank you for so graciously and generously sharing your time to make these videos. As a Junior designer looking for his first job, advice like this is pure gold. -Glen
Just had an interview and I hit all the points you mentioned in this video! EXCEPT, the way I delivered it was really sloppy. So disappointed in myself :| :|
Hello Mike!! I've been watching your interview videos and they have helped me a lot! I was laid off earlier this year due to Covid so it's been a while since I've done interviews. I finally got a job offer as a Sr. UX designer for a Fortune 50 Company. Thanks so much again for your tips!!! ♥️🥰
Hi Mike, I watched dozens of your videos when preparing for my design interviews. It helped me land a full-time product designer job. Thank you so much!
Hey guys, Mike will get you in the door, just gain as much knowledge about design process , task flows and communicating with people and youre 💯 just don't forget your adderal, trust ✊🏼😀
Invaluable stuff once again Mike. I've an interview this coming Thursday so I will definitely be using the advice you've gave us in this video. Top man, keep those videos coming. Peace.
Good Lord. 12 minute that could be said in 45 seconds. Here: Tell me about yourself: designer, love graphic design. Early background: Fliers, mom and pop shop, HTML CSS etc Remember you are applying for UX/UI, pinpoint the transition: I understand user center design( designing based on user's needs)\ They see your portfolio, don't focus on UI, focus on UX. How well do you work in a team? I'm a team player, build strong relationships with everyone on team, clients and developers etc OMG STOP REPEATING YOURSELF OVER AND OVER AND OVER Every developer has their own process so I like to learn how to work best with them Design: Step 1: Identify requirements Create use cases, build task flows Wireframing/mockup/prototype then ask stakeholders Usability studies Iterate feedback sprint cycle to get complete Sell yourself Excited Etc TADA! DONE!!
I had an interview and then they acpeted me in the first interview but they told me we will schedule the second interview and i really don't know what should i do on this interview or what will happen so please if you have any advice and something to please tell me as soon as possible plus if have any idea to how to explain my work because I see I'm such a really bad teacher.

Hi Mike, I'm 20 years old and I was having a bit of trouble finding a job seemingly because of my age, I've been asked for ID's at interviews and it discouraged me a bit. I finally have a second interview today and I feel confident, especially because of the advice you've given in this video. Thank you for taking the time to create this content, it's very helpful.

Hey Mike, I recently discovered your Channel and I would like to thank you for all the information that you shared. I have one question, hopefully you will have time to answer it. I come from a marketing background "MBA with marketing research expertise" , Im really thinking of shifting my career to UX Designing since I see myself more into it. do you think having a Marketing degree could be helpful? I am still in my early 30s and I just want to be sure I am doing the right things with no regrets, Thanks again.
Almost three minutes in and it's still nonsense... I would have thought a UX expert would have abetter understanding of getting to the point alot quicker. Bunch of rubbish.
Thank you so much! I had few interview this week. I’m super nervous about it because English is not my first language. Mike this is totally random, but, what if we use images from Unsplash? Is it okay? Unprofessional? What do you think?

If everybody keeps saying the same thing in their interviews, won't the people conducting the interviews eventually catch on?
