Hang tough! Science tells us that after 28 days away from a habit/routine, it is broken. I quit smoking cold turkey 38 years ago and haven't looked back since (except in my nightmares, literally!) . So glad I did. Literally can't stand a whiff of that stuff. After 40 days or so?....Congratulations, you have already done it! My next habit will be picking up my guitar after nearly as many years away from smoking, and learn to play guitar like you do. Thanks for your love of teaching, and the inspiration. God bless you!
Thanks so much for taking the time and doing these videos Guthrie! Dig your phrasing and the melodies in your improvisation so much - no better way to demonstrate the things your talking about.

Videos are pro enough, its the pro knowledge we're here for anyhow! I take something away from every vid. I'm always going oh, now I see, haha. Great stuff!
Thanks so much Guthrie for sharing all your insights. There is so much to take away in a 20 min video whether it’s on tone, rhythm, or the caged stuff. Really appreciate you taking the time to share.
GT one thing is clear, you are very passionate about guitar. This comes through in videos you share and the music you play. There is no doubt this is why you are a great player. Love the fact you are talking about it like we just hanging out and having a conversation about playing! Thanks GT!

Congratulations Guthrie on the sobriety. That is fantastic news and really happy for you. Love the lesson I did with you Guthrie and refer to it often. Keep up the great work my friend

Keep up the awesome work man.
Clear headedness really is nice. After radiation therapy for throat cancer, my doc suggested no alcohol and it was just the ticket. Sense of taste eventually came back. After a couple years it was much easier to have two beers/week instead of several more/night.
I've been 2.5 years dry now. Believe me, I never thought I would say that! ;-) . Nor did I ever think I would enjoy it, but it really does simplify life so much and allows you the time, space and attention to really look at and enjoy things. It doesn't bother me ever that others drink-good for them-and I'm no puritan. I just enjoy for now being dry.

@@guthrietrappmusic yeah I get that. I personally drink very occasionally, maybe once a month or so, and very reasonably. After some time partying, it felt good cutting down on excesses. Like when I dropped junk food altogether, I suddenly had a lot more energy... Never really had any addiction but bad habits. Now I'm addicted to good things. Music, motorcycling, cooking, and I'm looking to add more physical exercise to the list as soon as I can. It's crazy how much more focus you can get when you have healthy addictions. I had to ask for help from the Holy Spirit to quit drinking, because I could NOT do it by myself. Planned to quit on June 30, but drank on July 1st anyways, so I prayed for help that night, and the next day my compulsion to drink was gone completely, and hasn't come back since. Greetings from Canada Guthrie! Thank you very much for your insights on guitar and tone, so great to have a real pro share with us. I have always used Fender amps on my gigs, just never got into the Marshall/Vox thing plus I am a Strat guy who uses those Jazz III picks. Regarding the booze thing, keep up the good work! It is so easy in this biz to slip into that....one each set to stay loose and don't make a fool of yourself then more just to wind down and sleep after the excitement of the gig. It is so easy to slip into "more"...Joe Bonamassa has stopped drinking FYI. I have gigged for 40 years so I know what you are dealing with. All the best.
Great video, man. I've been playing for years, and it's really good to be reminded of these fundamental, common sense tips once in a while. Touch and tone are everything for a guitarist.
I for one don't care about how fancy the video is. It's the content that counts. Good information here! I keep toning everything down and sounding better. I want my guitar to be in the mix, not drowning it out. Also less bass could be good in a recording as bass adds up. I used to thing everything had to be turned way up. Thanks for the video!
autocrow Thanks man! You’re right, too bassy isn’t good either. It’s a balance in the studio for sure. I like small amps to record for that very reason.
It is all about tone and, as you’ve shown, so many things contribute to it! Thanks!! (17:34 love that) “Let’s play some guitar!” - great sign off phrase!
Thanks for these tone videos. Lots of information. I mostly play acoustic, but your last video got me to grab my 335. That was fun. Congrats on the 49 days!
Back when I started playing in 1975, I was all about humbuckers. Dimarzio sdhp's were in many of my guitars through the years. For the last ten years, I am mostly playing a telecaster. I have always used 9-42 for strings. I also have used fender heavy picks, and I consider my picking and fingering to be a light touch. Best wishes for you. Enjoy the ride.
congrats on your sobriety. it can really be a struggle in the music business. great video,i feel like you are speaking to me personally. best of luck in all your endeavors.
Your tone is incredible. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been playing guitar for more than 30 years & I still struggle with getting the tone that I want. I realize from this video that I've had my bass/mid/treble controls up too high, as I was using my eyes instead of my ears. Great advice & thanks again.
Great Lesson!!! I remember a Big Dude name John playing at the Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival in the 90's. He played a D 28 in a Blues Band. It sounded Great!
Another excellent lesson. Don’t matter what yer drinking, you’ve got a bunch to say. Music is your passion - I can (like a lot of us) relate to what you’re saying. I think you’re affirming what some players tune in. And for the next group of young players coming along your insight is valuable. I’ve heard there are some excellent mics for an iPhone. Maybe someone in UA-cam world has experience with them.
HELLO Mr. Trapp! I'm so delighted to have discovered your channel today oh my gosh. I've only seen about three of your uploads yet but I can see it's shaping up to be the most useful content for me that I've found out of ALL the YT various and sundry guitar things I've looked through for months. I'm pretty stoked right now. I have no idea who you are professionally or what all you've done, but I'm thinking it's a LOT. Anyhow, not to diminish others efforts - I have learned a lot of cool stuff - it's just the way you talk about theory, and technique I understand, and the music coming out is what I want to make. So that's a hard combo to beat, man. I don't think you could get rid of me at the moment with a shotgun , lol so - gonna go woodshed the 70 other vids and be right back. Don't go and wear the neck offa that thing in the meanwhile, ok? Might need it later. Cheers
Fantastic. Beautiful playing. I feel like my settings have been justified now by knowing yours. I play low output humbuckers through a 1966 50 watt Fender Bassman with 1x15 Peavey cab. It sounds good with my volume on 3, treble on 6, bass on 3.
GT, nice job man, all my life and it's been a long one I've been bugged with an over enthusiastic RH, you've given all of us with this issue sump'n good to work on. I love your playing, smooth, accurate articulate. Like you too, I had an issue with the bottle, been dry nearly 30 years, so man........ BOL with that, like the dude before said, 1 day at a time. Cheers and ATB.
Great, great points Guthrie. You should be nominated for the Nobel Prize compared to the times I tried to get guitar teachers to explain the real deal to me. Hang in there buddy.
Hi Guthrie, I love coffee too! Digging on that Russ Pahl Tele, and last but not least great lesson on tone. The two great take aways for me were not hitting the strings to hard so the instrument chokes out, and pulling the tone out of the instrument. Thanks for all you do, can't wait for the next one.
Enjoyed the 'functional' advice! Love your videos!! I smiled when @16:00 you said "I don't really mess with my tone knobs that much" given you had already 'checked' the tone knob positions (at least that what it looks like to me you're doing as you run your fingers over them) more than 20 X up to that point during the video. How did you get into that habit? Does it come from playing live and constantly turning off your volume between songs and then having to check to make sure you reengaged the volume before you began playing again?
Thanks for this video series....lots of good, logical stuff that sometimes gets by us. Enjoy that Eminence Alessandro; I've got one in my 3rd Power Wooly Coats. Really nice speaker!
Just a suggestion for a future video Guthrie...all you Nashville guys use hybrid picking and I love it, as it makes so much sense and sounds so cool. I am working on incorporating it into my playing but some advice as to how to start off and practice this style would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
One thing I really honed in on my tone, and hybrid picking: matching the pick to the tone of your nails. I chose my preferred picks based on the tone and attack that I get from my natural fingernails that I pick with.
You're so on point regarding how hard you pick. I think Eric Johnson was pointing out in his first video, that a hard attack actually diminishes sustain. I slowly swallowed my pride, and started to change my picking many years ago. I was afraid I would loose energy in expression and the physical sensation. I took some get used to, and I continually monitor my right now, and it sounds much better, there's no going back :-)
So true. It's also helpful in a huge way dynamically. If you're always playing hard, you can't add anything, all you can do is bring things down from there. A dynamic player (Eric Jonson is a great example, I agree), find a good sounding medium like Guthrie says. Then you give yourself the room to be dynamic. Same goes for speed and complexity.
49 days hooch free! Good for you brother! Just to let you know i've been free of all the stuff that hooks you since 03/1987. Gave my self to the LORD JESUS CHRIST then as well and have been clean since - Keep focused! GOD BLESS YOU!
Guthrie: this is right on time. I’m in the market for an electric and I’m torn between the 335 and Tele sounds (I’ve only got cash for one). Thanks much for helping me hear some of the differences and for demoing that app.
Thanks for the video, Guthrie! Congrats on the sobriety! I quit drinking just over 4 1/2 years ago. I don't miss being sick all the time! HA! And, when I go to a jam, I am fine drinking a few non-alc beers.
Agree with everyone here who's saying don't worry about the video quality. They're great as they are and very very helpful. Loved the one on Knopfler-style string bending.
My vintage Ratt fuzz tone took a dump. Ah crap! (Hellboy). Anyhow thanks 4 sharing Exact Tones. I'll check em out. Your 1666 Amp, has been Re Guthrie'd thru out time, such is the outcome of vintage stuff! II wish I had a fully operational 1966 Fender 50 watt baseman un-altered. 53 years has gone by where I'm gonna find one? Goodby vintage stuff! Finally, I just ordered a vintage boss CE-2 Chorus, $150.00. The price! now what's my Ratt going to cost me? Sheesh. Thnx 4 video, Guthrie. Great job.
First I discover Tom Bukovac, now I discover you....I am loving Covid 19. Who's next? Learning a ton of great tips and I really appreciate these videos!
It looks Ike you run the front pickup set pretty low on the Tele. It sounds great. I like your comments about volume at home. In addition to my 66 DR and the Concert, I keep a Blues Jr plugged in at home. I like the separate master volume. I like your comments about not setting the volume with pedals. This a great series. I can see myself coming back to this over and over.
I love your videos Guthrie - I don't think you need to worry about making them more professional. The information you are presenting and your attitude is what matters! Congratulations on the no booze. I haven't had any in a little over a year now and I couldn't be happier. I think the longer you go without it, the easier it is to not even miss it. You know, it's interesting, I never used to use the tone nobs on my guitars either but lately I've started to roll off some treble when I'm on a bridge pickup and I think it can really help dial in some nice, classic sounds. But just a tiny bit! Too much and it's just all mud. I never got what so many jazz people do when they have the tone turned almost all the way down... it just sounds terrible to my ears. Since you don't use the volume nob much either, I imagine that you don't need it but do you have treble bleed circuits on your guitars?
Thanks GUTHRIE...Great series....been playing my whole life and I am always amazed how I can always keep learning something new...never ending. You are such a natural. (Eyes on your fingers)...I really liked the discussion of where the guitar sounds good....I agree and thats where you want to play!!!. I just wanted to get one clarification on your triad session. I understand the notes in some chords don't fit a pure Maj or Min pentatonic or diatonic approach. But you said it yourself you have to be playing in the key of the song. So my take away from your lesson was make sure you know when notes are being introduced with which chords and be sure to target those notes within the same key as the song. So short of a song literally changing keys, all the chords associated with a song are in the same key as the song...do I have that right?
Some really vital knowledge in these 2 videos! Love the idea of the right size amp for the size context of the gig, Princeton small clubs, deluxe medium clubs ect, and tuning to the room, amazing knowledge every guitarist needs to understand.....one question Guthrie, how come u use, or prefer, the Trex Tremster over the amps vibrato?
Fantastic guitar player , you’re not lucky you’re talented and work hard to achieve your goals ! You seem like a real cool fella ! Thanks for the inspiration and tips ! First saw you on Norms rare guitars!
Guthrie, I've always wondered something. How come country guys don't ever use Marshalls? I'm not talking about the 800s but something like the 45s? For that matter you don't see many country guys ever rocking Bassman's either (which the JTM45 was based on). Any reason? I've been playing guitar for 30+ years but have only gotten into country in the last 4 so this is genre is all new to me but I'm enjoying learning all about it. Thanks in advance for the response.
Craig Thanks man! First of all, I don’t consider myself a country guitar player.. or a blues player or a rock player. I just play music. I play to song that’s being played. The Marshall sound and feel don’t work for what I consider real country music. It does work for modern bro country. It’s basically hard rock now.
Awesome insight! Thanks so much--definitely just changed my frame of thinking! Also, just wondering. Do you use a separate cab when you're doing sessions? Or do you just mic your combo? Thanks for the video!!!
Thanks man!! I juts mic the combo. I took the exact rig I used in the video just earlier today and it sounded great!! Always good when your tone in the studio is happening 😎👍🎶

Hey Guthrie! Thanks for the great video! Love your channel sir!
David guitar madman Thanks man!! More to come!
It is all about tone and, as you’ve shown, so many things contribute to it! Thanks!! (17:34 love that) “Let’s play some guitar!” - great sign off phrase!
sir fulton bishop Well Thanks man!!
Hey Guthrie, thanks so much for these great videos - you are an inspiration. Congrats on the sobriety, and keep doing what you do!
Nick Wilkins Thanks a bunch man!!!
Great discussion on overdrive Guthrie!
Timothy O'Reilly Thanks man!
Thanks for these tone videos. Lots of information. I mostly play acoustic, but your last video got me to grab my 335. That was fun. Congrats on the 49 days!
mike cullerton Thanks a bunch man!!!
these tone videos are tremendous, thank you for sharing the knowledge and tasty playing! cheers from sunny australia!
benjamin smith Thanks man!!!
Thanks Guthrie great video learning so much from you man
Gary Jones Thanks man!! Great!!
Thanx mang...
You always give me so much to work with and think about
cheers
That was great, thankyou, just what I needed to re-focus my playing and stop procrastinating ! Hello from the UK
2421ei Great!! We all do!! Thanks man!
Enjoy the ride.
telecasterbear Thanks for watching man!!
Good stuff, man. A lot of things to consider. Even down to the pick you used!
Thanks man! More to come!
It all makes a difference. Especially the callouses on your fingertips.
Love it .... I dream I had a guitar teacher like you in my life, I would have made awesome progress like with no one !!!!!
Belo Blues Thanks man!! Well you do now!!
congrats on your sobriety. it can really be a struggle in the music business. great video,i feel like you are speaking to me personally. best of luck in all your endeavors.
2naphish Thanks man!! Just needed a little break. Nothing crazy. 😎👍🎶
Great job explaining the diminishing returns!
Charles Scala Thanks man!!
Helicopter so there must be a robbery or something 😄🤣😂 learned a lot from this series, thanks Guthrie!
The Feel Button Ha! It’s either the choppers or the train 🤷♂️ Thanks man!!!
Thanks man!! We are all learning more every day!
Great tips. ❤️no booze. Same here. Keep the lessons coming. Great touch and tone.
Aaron Prince Thanks a bunch man!! 👍😎🎶
Great Lesson!!! I remember a Big Dude name John playing at the Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival in the 90's. He played a D 28 in a Blues Band. It sounded Great!
CountryHitsUSA John Joiner 👍😎🎶
I thought you would know him! I couldn't remember his last name. That D 28 sounded Good!
I thought you would know him! I couldn't remember his last name. That D 28 sounded Good!
N. J. Stratdude Thanks man!! I’d be open to trying an iPhone mic for sure.
Guthrie Trapp ua-cam.com/video/aWREXnXGl3U/v-deo.html
HELLO Mr. Cheers
Great tips, cheers Guthrie, you're a legend
dabrooz Thanks man!!
Fantastic. Beautiful playing. I feel like my settings have been justified now by knowing yours. I play low output humbuckers through a 1966 50 watt Fender Bassman with 1x15 Peavey cab. It sounds good with my volume on 3, treble on 6, bass on 3.
Ben Johnson Nice!! Thanks man!!
another great one! Keep it simple with the background. This feels so much more real and 'you' then that 'photoshoot' background.
Charlie De Keersmaecker Thanks man! I prefer it too actually. 👍😎🎶
KN Pepper Thanks a bunch man!! I appreciate that.
Great, great points Guthrie. You should be nominated for the Nobel Prize compared to the times I tried to get guitar teachers to explain the real deal to me. Hang in there buddy.
Shawn Bell Thanks a bunch man!!
Tom W Thanks a bunch man !!!
Thanks Guthrie, nice video bro.
Andy Mitchell Thank you man!!
Love these types of videos, well done
shfnderrock Thanks!!!
Tom Hamrick Thanks man! Ha! Yes it’s a habit from just what you said. From playing live so much and always making sure my volume is wide open. Busted.
Aahhh the Tele! Great playing and tone. Very informative thank you!
Paul G Thanks man!
Hey Guthrie,
Awesome!! Thank you!!
Thanks!!
Such good info. You mentioned phrasing...perhaps you could focus on that in one of your upcoming clips. Thanks so much.
Thanks man!!
Thanks for this video series....lots of good, logical stuff that sometimes gets by us. Enjoy that Eminence Alessandro; I've got one in my 3rd Power Wooly Coats. Really nice speaker!
trushack Thanks man! Great speakers!!
Thanks Guthrie, great in combination with the 335 video, really helpful!
pgod1960 Thanks a bunch!!
Just a suggestion for a future video Guthrie...all you Nashville guys use hybrid picking and I love it, as it makes so much sense and sounds so cool. I am working on incorporating it into my playing but some advice as to how to start off and practice this style would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
briguylor Thanks man!! I’ll be doing some more on that. Check out my other videos also. There’s one on hybrid picking :)
I took some get used to, and I continually monitor my right now, and it sounds much better, there's no going back :-)
I agree man! There's so many dynamics in the right hand!
I know that this is 2 years old, but wow, these are fantastic videos! The Tone is incredible, thanks man! 🙏
49 days hooch free! Good for you brother! Just to let you know i've been free of all the stuff that hooks you since 03/1987. Gave my self to the LORD JESUS CHRIST then as well and have been clean since - Keep focused! GOD BLESS YOU!
Michael Stewart Thanks a bunch man!! Good for you!! 👍😎🎶
ResponseAudio Nice man! Thanks a bunch. I’m taking a 5 month break. Until Oct 31st. Just needed a little break. 😎👍🎶
Love your playing man!
Jean-Pierre Thanks man!!
appreciate you sharing your knowledge
Bruce Anderson Thanks!
Great job.
John Bickers Thanks man!! Plenty of vintage gear out there still. Check out Reverb website.
Thank you for this video man it was very helpful. Great tone
Terence Smith Thanks man!!
Super helpful - thanks. 👍🏼
Rob Thesman Thanks man!!
Frank Stabler Great man!! Thanks a bunch for the feedback 😎👍🎶
Hear Pal Here Thanks man!! Yea there’s a fine line there with the treble and tone knobs. I just have regular circuits in my guitars.
Great tip on the tone 30ft out in front needing that treble and presence although it might be too hot right at the speaker!
Bryan Reece Yea man!! Thanks a bunch!
Mike Nappi Thanks a bunch man!! I juts like having more control at my feet. The amps sounds great but is a little more limited than the pedal.
@@guthrietrappmusic I totally feel ya on that! The pedal is way more versatile, excited for part 3!
Thanks Guthrie, awersome!
enzo san Thank you!!
Fantastic guitar player , you’re not lucky you’re talented and work hard to achieve your goals ! You seem like a real cool fella ! Thanks for the inspiration and tips ! First saw you on Norms rare guitars!
Andy Bennett a well thanks man!!! Means a lot!
Thank You, Guthrie looks good on ya' the coffee that is.
Great choice on the Allessandro
I really like his approach to tone in every respect.
Thanks man!! It just works.
I hope this doesn't sound passe' but your playing puts me in mind of Danny Gatton. I stand in awe. Thank you for the lesson.
kutsbothways Wow. Thanks a lot. I learned a bunch from him. Mainly that it’s ok to blend all styles together. He was unreal.
