Guthrie's comment at 16:30 is fantastic. "Don't obsess so much over gear. Just get out there and play the guitar ... I think people get a little too much into the gear and less about the playing. And that's the most important part.... All this gear stuff can be a distraction."
how true, its funny how people chase tone when "the tone" is their influence over any instrument, not the instrument/gear itself.case in point, listen to say"eddie van halen" or anyone reputable, consistent and recognizable play on any gear and you instantly know its them regardless of guitar, effects or amp. so as a wise man once said"tone is in your fingers" and that's just the way it is.
+wayne smith yes but he also said that when he picks a different guitar he plays differently ;) so is the same with pedals and amps, their sound will influence different playing different ideas etc ... they are all the to inspire various ideas/feels. But yes I agree that obsessing over gear is not the answer but testing gear and letting it provoke some genius inside of you yes sure test as many as you can. If all is in the fingers than we would need no instrument AT ALL :) you need the pickups (but which alnico, ceramics, humbucker, single coil, P90) you need the pedals, you need an amp or amps (Steve Ray Vaughan ran a Fender into a Marshall if Im not mistaken) so gear is of importance to find "that sound" one is happy with it. So, you need both :) gear and fingers! End of sermon ;)
So Guthrie plays practically with a Mexican Fender and a few some of them accesible pedals in mono without breaking his head in adjustment...epic!! Tone in his own Hands!!! My New HERO!!!
He make the other run downs with lockers of guitars and Bradshaw systems look like wimps. Guthrie can spin circles around most with a tele and pedal train jr. Setup. I love it.
Awesome video from an awesome guitar player! Been a fan of your channel for a while but have just recently discovered Guthrie Trapp. I love his playing & his attitude. Thanks!
@@leslieperry3001 what you said is correct, however you avoided my observation. It was quite snobbish to completely ignore the question of the host asking a valid and reasonable question.

I guess I view pedal boards in kind of a similar, yet militaristic way. When you've been blessed to have found your personal 'FAVORITE' pedals, they morph into YOUR SOUND. They are the CORE because they've ALL been VETTED from HOURS spent wringing nearly everything you THINK you can out of them. You know them. You KNOW you can DEPEND on them. They're always on call. However, it's a never ending mission. A mission you EMBRACE when GLADLY UNDERTAKEN. GOTTA keep the CORE as few as possible, mobile and in great condition with maintenance. Then search for recruits. New warroirs to slip into the rotation. The recruits SERVE and COMPLIMENT the CORE and yet meld seamlessly into the CORE when deployed.
No way! Get out! I have a Reverend All Tone in my Deluxe. No on e knows what they are. Great speaker. Like a Jensen on steroids. All the glass PLUS lows. Cool Guthrie!
How f-ing refreshing. I'm sick of giant pedalboards and 7 to 10 amps. I don't play country but with this set up I can play the bluesy rock I make, bravo premier guitar
I dig that he keeps the RC Booster on all the time. Do you think he does the same when he uses the EP Booster? Where would that pedal be placed in the signal chain? 🤔
love how Guthrie didnt say how much the tele cost. it seems like every artist is like that. i know i do the same. i never talk about how much money ive spent. its classy
Wait, seriously how did we didn't discuss the roller wheel underneath the bridge plate!? Is that some kind of a B-bender, or just a straight volume knob?
DAZOFOZ1 It gives that appearance, but I think the screws are just corroded/rusty looking - not missing. I could be wrong, but both pups have that appearance.
16:36⏩: Amen brother! Guilty here; if I redirected 1/10 the time and treasure devoured by my gear obsession into feeding my pursuit to learn and grow as a player, I'd be top-cat in music city!
+Eric sin sinner yeah could be if you would only use the "60s" reverb setting and the fenderish tremolo. the 63 harmonic trem setting is pretty good. its a good thing to have on your board if you got the space.
+Eric sin sinner true they are very expensive. But if your amp doesn't have trem or verb it's better than buying a big 600 -1500 dollar unit(very few of which have trem) Strymon make some of the best quality pedals you could buy. Sorry for getting so far away from the point of the original comment haha, I just really like that pedal
The Flint is much more versatile than the (wonderful) built in reverb. And if you're on a shaky stage the Flint won't crash and rumble like the Fender reverb. I used my pedal reverb the other night with my Princeton Reverb for that very reason.
60 year old technology and they never beat it? John really needs to get out more. They can actually intonate a guitar completely, and have it stay in tune through an earth quake. Staggered tuners no need for a string tree. Carvin makes necks that you can take in a sauna and not have to adjust the truss rod. Listen to some of the old timers talk about LP's. They will say things like "this is a good one" "This one is really resonant" It's because the quality is so hit and miss. I love the old guitars too, but I'll never drink the Kool-Aid.
... you need to stop drinking the tech kool-aid. There is a reason that session players continue to play tele and sg and strat and lp modeled guitars (60 year old technology), and are, in general, *not* playing Carvin necks, no matter how earthquake proof they are. There is a tonal quality to that 60 year old technology that has in fact, not really been improved upon. Intonation is, yes, extremely important. But tone is king.
I guess you didn't notice the bridge pieces are staggered and not vintage tele style. He was talking more about the simplicity of two pups and simple knobs...makes you play great instead of relying on gizmos . The guys in Nashville can play with a guitar/cord/amp....doesn't mean pedals and amps/guitars don't matter...just that those are the important part of being a player.
CrazyCow500 He must have gotten it for a price so cheap it may have been potentially insulting to the builder. A redwood tele would be insanely sick though.

GT is a world class guitar player with the humility of a saint. Such a great player but even a greater dude.
Absolutely hooked
Guthrie is the kind of guy you could tour the world with and still love the guy afterwards.

I thought it was a little tongue-in-cheek to mention gear obsession whilst being interviewed on rig rundown, a series dedicated to gear obsession.
I was thinking the same thing. I mean shit, I get it but I like to geek out as much as the next guy sometimes, you know.
I absolutely love Guthries personality and playing. A wonderful example a player and a gent.
His music is not really my thing (tastes and all; to each his own), but he seems like a really humble and gentle guy, so I enjoyed watching this.
He plays in many styles.
This dude is something else... a master at combining blues with jazz... amazing player..
You should try a private lesson with him. Well worth the peanuts it will cost you for the gold you get in return.
I would love to see more session players. Especially from Nashville! I would love to have John Bollinger do a rig rundown of his personal gear.
please do a Bill Frisell rig rundown!
Very cool rig. I love Guthrie's style and his taste in gear. Very musical player
See Guthrie live if you can. Stupendous!
One of the best guitar players out there! Highly recommend both of his solo albums!
Such a cool guy! Please do another installment with him where he plays more!

Words of Wisdom--Thanks, Guthrie and Premier Guitar!
i've learned so much from these videos, i really how Guthrie Trapp is able to condense so much and make it simple
FINALLY we got to HEAR some guitars! Great episode guys!
first time i ever saw/heard about this guy, he's a freeking music genius , very cool
Love this Rig Rundown! True working guitarist!
Awesome video from an awesome guitar player! Been a fan of your channel for a while but have just recently discovered Guthrie Trapp. I love his playing & his attitude. Thanks!
I like how Guthrie does'nt know much about the tubes and speakers. He just knows how to play.
Yo AP those true players don’t have time for all that bullshit .they are too busy puttin that work in.
...a man after my own rig. As H D Thoreau said, simplify!
Would have loved to have heard Guthrie play through the board...
This cats only got a thousand subscribes. WTH? He's the best kept secret on UA-cam. Awesome versatile guitarist
63k now, still less than he deserves!
Great rundown, love that 335
Guthrie Trapp is the real deal. This is Danny Gatton, Mark Knopfler, and Django rolled into one player.
Real deal....he didnt say how much he paid for the guitar, why a secret? Sorry its a let down.
This guitar player could play a junk guitar and make it sound great . The price of any instrument is irrelevant in the hands of a virtuoso.

+Dan Oughton you forgot the 4th t telecaster
The green underdog pedal. Great to see it put to good use.
nice rig rundown
Guthrie is so humble .. but i wish he would have played thru each pedal so we could hear it !
Too cool when he said " mexi-tele pickups " I love mexi-tele's they play great and sound good too .
I have a Flint as well. Marvelous pedal.
A country picker who doesn't use compression. Seriously, that's rare!

Put a Trainwreck Type 2 PPIMV in a '65 twin with those Jensen C12N (orignals) and you can get any Fender tone at any volume.
Totally awesome. Such a pro. Killer.
Nice Rig. Simple and effective. Surprised to see a Nashville guy with no compressor. I like it.
Craig Shipley probably because keeps that ODR on all the time, doesn't need anymore compression.

That EP Boost has switched trim pots inside so play around with those

I almost forgot about dark haired Jon Bolinger. He’s the best at these rig rundowns.
this gibson es-335 is just perfect! one of the most beautiful 335 i've seen.
I had that exact same shirt as Guthrie. think I got it at target.
Nice job

He's mentioned somewhere else it was not expensive. 6-700 bucks IIRC. Just knew it was the right axe.
He was using it when I heard him at Robert's Western World over ten years ago.
Great vid John. BTW, what brand & model of Mic did you guys wear in this video?
Wait, seriously how did we didn't discuss the roller wheel underneath the bridge plate!? Is that some kind of a B-bender, or just a straight volume knob?
That's not a roller. It's a darkened spot on the wood where he anchors his little finger; it's worn through the Chrysler Light Blue nitro lacquer.
I had that exact version of his Vibrolux Reverb amp and it was stolen from me. :( Many years ago.
Mr. Trapp and James Burton are my two favorite players.
I LIKE CC DEVILLE AS WELL
You just cost me... now I gotta get to my local guitar store and get me a Telecaster!
...Excellent musicianship and demonstrations...what is that voicing (tab) at 6:31? It's brilliant!
wow that lil somethin he picked around 6:15 is so beautiful, does anyone know any pieces either by him or other artists that sound like that?
It looked to me that he had no pole pieces in the bridge humbucker of the 335. If this was the case, they should have elaborated a little on that.

great interview! Billy Bob Thornton younger brother?
The pedal board needs to be fluid; change them out as songs change with your repertoire
Is there a Robin Guthrie Rig Down? That'd be awesome :)
Great rundown but to me the Flint is redundant with black face fender reverb amps

Awesome Rig Rundown! Thanks for the shout out *****! Much love from the crew here Vertex Effects :)
He looks (exactly) like "Jake" from Evil Dead II.
Is Guthrie Ambedextrous ?
I've seen him play right and left ,I swear ...........
No, the video is reversed on one of his Artistworks promos. Look at the amp in that promo, it’s a backwards Fender......
So in 2020 its go big and go home!
What is a non-carted (carded?) session?
It's when a "cartage company" doesn't bring your rig to a session from their warehouse. You bring your own in your vehicle.
"Sounds killer"
18:07.. you're welcome
Hot tip dont talk about them just play them. Much more interesting.
14:55 Does he mean "unity"?
He says "unison," but he means unity--which is no cut and no gain. In simpler terms: output level is equal to input level.
