So HAPPY you've discovered Animals As Leaders!!! Do MORE!!! Their heaviest songs are probably "CAFO" and "Wave of Babies", or some more chill songs could be "Physical Education" or "Another Year"
You have a black lead guitarist with a background in progressive metal and this is basically his project, because a label offered it to him, then you have a mixed rhythm guitarist with classical guitar training and a white drummer obsessed with rhythm with background in funk and some other stuff All of them graduated from music institutes (I think it was the same institute, but I'm not sure)
Matt went to Berklee School of Music in Boston, the others did not. Tosin brushed up a little at MI after Reflux but I'm fairly certain Javier never attended any music institutes or schools.
With these guys sometimes you get so distracted by the guitars you miss that the drummer is going off the whole time. All three of these guys are musical marvels.
This song is magic, and the fact they can play this flawlessly live along with all their other songs shows how incredibly talented they are. One of a kind.
The leader of this group, Tosin Abasi, is one of the guitarists, along with Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Steve Vai, and Nuno Bettencourt, who also tours under the name Generation Axe.
OMG Jamel, you started AAL with The Brain Dance. That is so great my dude. Most start with CAFO. This is so much more accessible on the first listen. Excellent!
I recommended a song more on the chill side from AAL, didnt wanna over do it for the homie Jamel, but then he goes and does a reaction to "bleed" by Meshuggah the next day lol, floodgates have been open
I like to think of Animals as Leaders songs as three guys playing separate 5-10 minute solos that just happen to line up harmonically. If you do another AAL vid, I would suggest covering 'CAFO' or perhaps 'Temping Time'. Personally, my favorite AAL song is 'Para Mexer' which is very chill in comparison to the rest of their work
THEE brotha, and one of the best guitar players around in the genre regardless of skin color. He is enormously talented and the band as a whole is incredibly creative.
It's been a year from this reaction post of yours. And what is truly amazing is that, every, and I do say, EVERY Reaction post on ANIMALS AS LEADERS, all of you content providers have the very same facial expression. And I do mean the same. Everyone of you are out of breath, Hart pounding wont stop. the tingling in your cheek bone. That is the AMAZING thing that ANIMALS AS LEADERS brings to the table. It's 2021 and they have just got better. :D I love this. rock on Brother.
Have do done SNARKY PUPPY - Lingus yet????? You're already flipping between metal and rap, might as well toss in some of the best jazz you'll ever hear (and one of the most incredible keyboard solos of all time).
I dont think Jamel could handle Snarky Puppy yet. He would literally shit himself with all that talent in one band. By far, the best concert I've ever witnessed and I work in the music industry. I second Lingus as an intro to this band. Fucking EPIC!
@@jamelakajamal Great band. Check out Earth Departure and Inamorata. More good bands Chon Circa Survive Tricot Devo This Town Needs Guns Elephant Gym The Sword Thank You Scientist Chromeo
I can relate to hearing a beautiful prog jam, picking up my guitar and then realising I'm way out of my league.. these guys go everywhere musically! I like your energy man, fun video
Imagine trying to memorize each note and beat to each of their songs to play live on stage. I have heard a person call live metal shows the Olympics of music because everything is more intense and takes the dedication of an athlete to perfect. Btw animals as leader participated in writing the song that unites the world in the new Bill and Ted movie 😄 can't think of a better band
Damn Jamal, you're just introduced me to a new band and tosin Abasi. I love you keep up the awesome work and Merry Christmas and happy New Year brother.
You just met one of the greatest innovative technical guitar players to ever grace this earth. Welcome to this new episode on what Tobin Abasi will invent next.
Check out their song The Woven Web. The genre is called Post-Rock (or -Metal), and is a re-examination of the philosophy and psychology behind rock and metal, focused purely upon musicianship
Probably the best contemporary band on the planet. Top tier guitar work by Tosin and Javier course.. but only a top tier drummer can play with them. Matt Garstka is a madman.
There's a vid here on you tube of Matt Gartska drummer with Joe Sallens on base when Matt was 16. It's a little salsa ditty that smokes. Joe Sallens is a hell of a bass player.
For everyone saying they are a jazz band...they're not. They are progressive metal. Tosin is a beast. Finally someone reacted to them and I'm super happy. Hope you do more. For a more heavy sound as everyone else already mentioned CAFO would be optimal. They don't need words, it's all about the music. Let it move through you :)
Check out the drummer Matt Garstka, he's insanely good! You can check his playthrough of "Kascade" or "Tooth and Claw", blew my socks off. The whole band is really great, "Woven Web" is another great track.
Some people call this music "Post-Metal" or "Jazz-Metal". Nah, the only term that works for bands that do a fusion of Djent (sub-genre of Metal) and Jazz is "Djazz". Be sure to checkout similar bands like CHON, Polyphia, Covet, Intervals and Plini. All of them are instrumental acts. Also, checkout Unprocessed if you want voices with your Djazz. Lastly, you need to try Dance Gavin Dance. Smooth as silk Metal with dual vocals. I recommend their song "Betrayed by the Game". Sounds great and the video is weird.
Jamal at @2:55 knew things were about to take off... his doubts fooled him. lol, jk. love seeing your videos Jamal. Especially reacting to contents that aren't "pop"/"mainstream"
If you ever choose to do more animals as leaders, the "live at NAMM" videos give you a great idea of what the hell tosin is doing with his fingers. My favorite is woven web, but everyone's got their own personal favorite, and they're all good.
Without question they are three incredibly talented musicians who know their instruments and know their theory but...like a guy swinging for the fences in a tie game with a runner on 3rd in the bottom of the 9th with two outs...a base hit is all you need...yet you swung for the fences and struck out.
If you're into that prog rock stuff, check out a band called Scale the Summit. Not sure if they're making albums anymore, but one of their songs "Dunes" is still in my rotation.
Would love to see someone react to Scale the Summit - Atlas Novus (live). Brain Dance is an amazing track but Atlas Novus might be the best instrumental metal track of the past decade.
I was fortunate enough to see them when they were younger, in a small venue... their bassist is one of my favorite musicians. He has a side project called “Bulb”... I talked to the dude just me an him about his bass for like 5 minutes after a show and didn’t even know he was the “Bulb” guy 😫 I would of had so much more to say. Anyway, they’ve had a few singers... they just seemed to take away from it. At least the one guy I heard. Can you imagine remembering all this?

animals as leaders are the 3 dudes who were born with insane talent, and then did nothing but practice it every day of their lives
@BlackSH0veldeath could not agree more. When Navene Koperweis was in Animosity...goddamn that dude can play.
They may be the best 3 people group after Rush

Progressive Jazz To The 10th Power. WOW!
