  • Godzilla just swirlied Disney/Marvel in the bathroom and stole their lunch money. It's their own damn fault for making it so easy for him.

And yeah, that's their bread and butter. They actually use creativity to make their movies. Not throwing a huge budget on a garbage script. They proved once again, how terrible Western entertainment has gotten. Japan is the best right now. Hollywood has to deal with it but getting all of these weirdo activists out of the business

The title is about Japan after war. They started from zero (like Germany), but when Godzilla appeared they went back a number. That's why it's "-1"

Its also kinda meta too because this movie is kinda a remaking of the OG godzilla. Using classic godzilla design, music, and having a similar plan involving bubbles. And ironically it doesn't have the suicide that the OG has when they finish off godzilla in 54

I am a Japanese who didn’t care about Godzilla movies so much but many were saying this one was so good. So, I went to see it and wowed, cried, deeply moved and loved everything about it. Ended up 3 times in theaters. I wasn’t sure about how people would take this movie abroad because story telling is so Japanese, none of the cast is not famous globally, language, subtitles and so on. But I am quite happy to find out my American friends enjoyed this movie so much. Yes, this is a great movie in years!

As someone who had watched every single godzilla movie ever made both the edited American versions and the orignal Japanese versions.
This is probably one of the best if not the best Godzilla movie ever made. In the Godzilla movies the human characters are usually hit or miss.
However in this one you really care about the human characters. This Godzilla movie has more heart and soul in it, than the last 3 American ones combined.
Honestly I was surprised by how critical the movie was of WWII 2 Japan, especially the military.
I've actually got my dad curious about seeing the movie just because of the human element. He's never watched a Godzilla movie in his life.

The Japanese during WWII viewed their leader as a literal GOD. Capital G. Their defeat absolutely crushed them spiritually for decades. Japan became cynical of all religions. They adopted extreme corporate culture as a religion and had a huge economic boom!.. until they didn't. That's two Gods that promised prosperity for all... and abandoned/decieved them... leaving them faithless and jaded.
Modern Japanese respect the citizens and soldiers who died of course, but they do not believe the emperor was a God anymore, as such, it wasn't a Holy War. They aren't wrapped in ultra patriotism about WWII or their country's role in it.
They truly view their history trough an unbiased lens!❤

When Noriko pushes him into the alley then gets caught in the gust. I swear my heart almost stopped it was so unexpected. There was another sense where I had to force myself to breathe cause I was holding my breath. The tension they created was so very palpable. Hollywood seriously needs to take note even though they won't. This is how you make a movie!

Japan always made these movies on this budget. They always been better than us when it came to going under budget. They actually use something called creativity to tell their stories. When you have that, you don't have to spend a huge amount of money to make a film. Hollywood keep doing that. Throw all this money into poorly written films. The script is the lifeblood of the film, not the budget

I recall hearing that when filming the movie "Jaws", the mechanical shark they were using kept malfunctioning. It apparently made Spielberg really angry, and they were forced to film the scenes with a very "minimalist" approach with what they could actually show of the shark. Ironically, this was the best thing that could have happened. People could pay more attention to the story and characters, and the use of music and brief glimpses allowed for tension to build to tremendous levels. A lesson so totally lost in US entertainment in general.

I think the Minus One is kinda like a countdown. Ya know, like T minus one, G minus one. Because this is supposed to be the start of a Toho rehash of their Monsterverse. Like they had back in the '50s & '60s. With Rodan, Mothra, Gorosaurus, Varan. All these monsters had their own movies & crossed over into Godzilla movies. And look at the movie logo. It plainly says G Minus One. We get this movie to set the stage...and then: Blast Off!!! Into Toho's revamped Monsterverse!

Minus One not only takes elements of some of the best Godzilla films (54, 84, 2000, GMK, Shin) but even resurrects overlooked, promising aspects brought up in other films in the franchise (Godzilla Raids Again, Vs King Ghidorah, and yes design cues from the MonsterVerse) and not only improves on them but even SHOWS us things that were only ever implied or just explained through exposition in the past, like Godzilla’s painful origin. The film even completely punts the recent Jurassic Park movies at one point and it took me by surprise how well done it all was. The human characters are shockingly good too, probably the best ones we’ve had in a very long time, and setting it in the 40s post-WW2 worked to their benefit, and I liked how it brought attention to a lot of the guys that were chewed up and spat out by the Japanese war machine (and the allegory works very well due to being nuanced and the movie does not feel like a petulant lecture either). Koichi especially is a huge improvement from Haruo, helped chiefly by the fact he actually has great character development, and he doesn’t end up a sniveling coward like Haruo ended up being in the Monster Planet trilogy (that trilogy had so many awesome concepts but was completely wasted by Toho’s micromanaging). Minus One is also the complete opposite in presentation compared to the awful Singular Point anime too, where you could completely rip Godzilla and the other Kaiju out entirely and you’d still be left with a pretentious show with dull as dishwater characters spouting nonsense, whereas in this film the characters hold it up so well it works. Really the only flaw I had with it was I wish the Tokyo attack lasted a little longer, but still I’m happy with what I got. I hope Yamazaki gets his wish and we get a second film from him, preferably a sequel what with all the threads he intentionally left hanging over us, because Minus One deserves it, and I’m tired of Toho doing just one-offs like they have done these past 20 years. And that $15 million budget and still sounds and looks this good? Hollywood, you need new management.
Also the “Minus One” subtitle is an allusion to Japan being reset to zero as a civilization by the end of WW2, only for Godzilla to set them into the negatives. It’s admittedly a weird sounding title but I get it. Me personally I also think it works as a double meaning on account that it’s the first film to go back to the middle of the 20th century like the original 1954 Gojira, except of course taking place much earlier at a point where the Japanese had little to nothing to work with.

      What is a zero civilization?
For example, a Type 0 civilization, not defined by Kardashev, would control about 1 MW of power (equivalent to having around 100 campfires burning at any given time); on Earth, the emergence of Type 0 civilizations is roughly concurrent with the rise of civilization in a general sense
Type I civilization is referred to as a “planetary civilization”. Characterized as having a power consumption of 10 16 W (Watts) [1,2], a civilization of Type I has harnessed for its use all major forms of energy available from its home planet (for example human civilization and the Earth).

TOHO Studio Executives came to one of their more prolific directors and gave him a butt load of Yen (from 1953 or 54 economics) and told him to make them a movie by a certain due date. He gladly took their money and asked them what kind of movie did they want. They replied that they didn't care and left. Before he could become so dispaired that he could commit Hari Kiri he got a flash of inspiration. And the only fictional character that is an official Japanese citizen... Godzilla was born.

    I'm Japanese "Godzilla-1.0" fan.
Will people overseas understand? For the most part, I completely agree with Thorias Unlimited's review.
Thank you so much.
I cried too. When Shikishima attacked with the ''Shinden(Prototype fighter aircraft near the end of the war)'' at the end, if it had been a true kamikaze attack where he lost his life, I would have been quite disappointed in the story. However, this work did indeed save the lives it was meant to save.

''This country has treated life too poorly'' also resonated with me. I think the theme of this work is contained here. I think this is a theme not only for this work but also for "Godzilla" itself.
However, although the ending seems to be a happy ending, it is not...The dark, ink-like blood on her neck leaves an aftertaste of fear. Personally, I think there is no need for a sequel or anything like this.
    "-1.0" has several meanings.
Japan, which lost everything in the war and became '0'', was further lowered to ``-1.0'' level of despair by the invasion of Godzilla, and this year marks 69 years since the birth of Godzilla (1954), which is ''-1 year'' until the 70th anniversary. "too.
I learned about the issue of production costs from a review video by someone overseas. We live in a place where people can't afford to spend money on movies.
