OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH THAT'S IT!!!! THAT'S THE SONG!!!!! The first time I heard it on some movie I had NOOOOO idea that was Godzilla's song LOL Oh and here is the song link: ua-cam.com/video/lO88HHSWg-c/v-deo.html
Hopefully Toho gives it a wider release. I mean it's been getting super good buzz and I get the feeling it'll make enough of a profit here for Toho to take notice.
I'm so damn sad this movie is not showing in my country. Been waiting for it, and for now I can only "watch" it vicariously through non-spoiler reviews.
The release here in Australia is abysmal. The Beyonce movie is out in heaps more cinemas and other niche titles but not a new Godzilla film because... what? Westerners are too lazy to read subtitles? Cringe. Edit: There are screenings here but cinema choices and sessions are super sparse.
@@SliderFury1 There are some really bad ones. A lot of them are from the Showa Era. Jet Jaguar was really, really dumb for example. You have to be in the mood for some campy things while shutting down a good part of your brain to enjoy them. My first Godzilla movie was Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, which is basically considered one of the worst Godzilla movies. It was Godzilla versus a giant shrimp because they had a giant shrimp suit laying around and they wanted to make some money. I loved it as a kid, but I'll admit it's not the best Godzilla movie.
Theres a lot of eh ones and the ones that tend to be seen as the good ones tend to be the ones that have him fighting the more well known rivals like mecha godzilla though there are some one off monsters that are memorable. Also the movies with just him alone tend to stand out more since its not done as much.
I cried so many times in this movie. I've not been moved by acting like this in a long long time. It's a beautifully dark human drama FULL of empathy, pain and compassion. But it will make you smile, and cheer, it's so easy to care for EVERY. single. character. on screen. That's a very rare thing in a movie today. It must be emphasized respectfully, it isn't just a Kaiju movie, this is actually Cinema.
One thing I like about this Godzilla is that he is relatively small. He's only 50 meters tall compared to the 118-meter Monsterverse, the 120-meter Shin and the 300-meter Godzilla Earth. To the bigger Godzillas, they scarcely notice humans like specks. But this smaller Godzilla sees them, knows they're there, and ACTIVELY hates them.
So Alteori, one thing you might have missed in regards to Gojira's theme is that for the first time since the original 1954 film, the used both (yes both) themes for their intended purpose. When Gojira was on screen, you were hearing the original theme for Gojira. The second part (when the human characters were taking action) is actually the theme for Humanity. This is legitimately the best film in the "Gojira" series since the original (which I STRONGLY recommend you watch next, though I would warn you, when I first saw the original Japanese version in theaters, I ugly cried manly tears of manliness).
@@Alteori Yep! I was pretty lucky. There were two rounds of screenings of the Rialto print, the first being in 2004, and the second being in 2013-ish. I caught it then. Very emotional film, and amazing way to experience it for the first time. Also the best translation, IMO. The Criterion release has the second best (and it's also the best one available, avoid the DVD releases). *Edit* Oops, I edited my first post for a grammatical error, and lost Alteori's like!
@@Alteori As for Kaiju flicks with good human stories? Well... heisei Gamera.... yes, all three of them. the third is best here, but all three hit hard. The Biollante movie, and the millenium Mechagodzilla movies. Some of the Showa films had seriously memorable characters too. Like the second Showa Mechagodzilla movie had a Human woman turned into a cyborg by the aliens, that plot got WILD!!!!!
I saw this with my brother, who usually has the emotional capacity of a rock, and he actually got teary-eyed when the little girl cried. It may have something to with the fact that he has 2 little daughters.
Na I cried, I laughed, I held my breath. This movie got real emotions out of me. During the attack on Ginza my heart dropped. This movie isn't just a good Godzilla movie, its a great piece of cinema
This may very well be the most vicious Godzilla I've seen. Loved seeing the Big G be just an absolute menace EDIT: I NEED THAT VOICE OVER FOR THIS GODZILLA!
I honestly haven’t seen him this vicious since GMK, he was just just out for blood and filled with hatred and fury, they really made Godzilla terrifying and scary again, It’s the Godzilla film I have been hoping to see for so long.
I’ve now seen this movie Five Times in theaters, as of now it is easily one of the best Godzilla movies ever made, it’s made it in my Top 3 alongside Gojira(1954) and Shin Gojira. Great story, great pacing, great atmosphere, great characters, great acting, great effects, and definitely one the best Depictions of Godzilla to this day right up there with 1954, 1984, GMK, and Shin.
I might be too much of a purist, but I absolutely hated Shin Godzilla. While I liked this movie, I really hated the changes to Godzilla in this. Not the origin, I'm okay with them shaking some things up in a reboot. What I hated about this one are the changes to the atomic breath, both the end result and the spines popping up as the breath powered up. I also hated that Wolverine style healing factor as well. The second one, I understand kind of why they changed it for this movie when you consider the ending(they had to make a way to defeat him). And yes, I know about the whole G-Cell thing from the Millenium Era, but I really prefer Godzilla taking damage being more meaningful. Conventional weapons should never cut it, pardon the pun.
It's so crazy how it took Toho this long to realize that making Godzilla bigger wasn't the solution. You gotta establish a good setting that you care about only to have Godzilla screw it up. It gives weight to his destruction. I really hope this movie does well so we can can get more of them. Despite only cost 15 million dollars it looks hella good. In both screenings the audience got up to clap, that's how much of a good impression this movie made and we cannot forget to appreciate the actors who brought their A game to what could have been a forgettable monster movie but they were the heart of it.
The $15 million has me asking lots of questions, is the cost of living in Japan much lower than USA? so CGI artists can be paid less? Or is cost of living comparable to USA so then are they underpaid? Did they hire less crew to work longer hours and they cool with that? Or they really struggled in production? Are USA production crew overpaid then?
Great point! The “small” version of Godzilla on Odo Island at the beginning of _Minus One_ is more terrifying than any Monsterverse portrayal of Godzilla.
I’d rather save the more explicit details for the spoiler review, but this movie not only takes elements of the best films, but even aspects of some of the more overlooked films in the franchise and not only improves on them but even SHOWS us things that were only ever implied in the past. Heck it even one-ups the Jurassic Park movies at a certain scene. I hope Yamazaki gets his wish and we get another film from him, preferably a sequel because Minus One deserves it, and I’m tired of Toho doing just one-offs.
@@alexkogan9755 It was, but it also is my least favorite film in the series. The symbolism and commentary were very messily applied, and while brutal in a number of areas, it came off as rather mean-spirited, like the director got off on tormenting his characters, rather than being more of a tragedy.
That island scene in the beginning is horrifying. It completely took me back to Jurassic Park, but this film took it up a huge notch. Every dollar is on the screen. $15 million. They put Hollywood to shame.
@@ciattathompson7461 I admit I let myself get mildly spoiled by Drunk3PO’s review of the film when he brought it up, but him explaining it did not do it justice. They brought back the origin from Vs King Ghidorah 1991 and turned it on its head completely. And the atmosphere and build up to that scene was INTENSE. Heck, it’s very like Jurassic Park and even Jaws with how well balanced the tone is. Juxtaposing horror, disaster drama, and finally action.
There were so many wonderful choices made about Godzilla’s depiction, not to mention the arcs of the human characters. Something that stuck out to me was how Godzilla wasn’t just a dinosaur with superpowers. He was aggressive, almost hateful, and truly boiling over with rage. I’ve never been as scared of him as when he was chasing the mine sweeper boat. The anger and malice in those eyes. And the roar! It literally sounded like it took up more space than what is audible to the human ear.
I just came from seeing it myself and I couldn't agree with you more. For all the reasons you mentioned, I absolutely loved it and would go as far as to say--as a lifelong Godzilla stan since the 1970's!--it's the best Godzilla movie I've seen in my life. I love Shin as well, but "Minus One" just was a chef's kiss for me. The perfect balance of human drama and monster madness, and I loved it SO MUCH. I want to see this in the theater again and score the Blu Ray when it'e released!
Got to see it last night with a friend, and I’m gonna watch it with my family tonight because it’s just that good, and I’ve got one thing to say, in my 18 years in this world this has to be the top 3 or if not the very best movie I’ve watched yet and possibly even in the next 20-40 years
Seeing the beast so enraged and vengeful, intentionally killing characters I actually care about, was genuinely overwhelming. In the best possible way. People were gasping and crying in the theatre, amazing.
Probably the reason they all felt like main characters is that they were all given moments that were defining to and fully focused on them. Great tips of which to take notes.
It takes me back into 1954 seeing Godzilla for the first time even though i wasn't even born at that time but this movie just takes me back to that film
I live in a third world country Nicaragua this movie comes out in December 30th I want to see it in the theater I can't wait but that's all I can do is just wait great review keep up the great work
My fascination for dinosaurs made me love Godzilla. I've been a fan since my wee days. Sure there were terrible Godzilla movies, but I've been a mostly loyal fan. I'm glad this movie did things right.
Having human characters the audience cares about goes a long way toward the establishment of suspense, no doubt. That's always been one of the hardest details to stick the landing on in a Godzilla film.
Alteori ain’t lying this movie is the best thing I’ve seen in donkeys years. Great characters and fantastic action as well. This is the Wrath of Kahn of the Godzilla flicks no lie.
I saw it in the theater today, December 2, 2023, and it is SPECTACULAR!! Best writing ever in a G movie. Best effects ever in a G movie. Best characters ever in a G movie. And Godzilla is absolutely terrfying! I have no idea how they made this movie on a Japanese movie budget, but it looks better than 99% of the movies coming out of Hollywood. I am in awe. 12 out of 10.
I feel sorry that your first memory of Godzilla's theme was the intro to a rap song. That hurts just hearing it. I still cant get over how well the humans were done in this movie. Throughout the whole franchise there have been at least two human characters i cared about. Minus One made me care for like 8 in one movie.
I feel like the animation of godzilla on land was intentional. I see it as a call back to the guy in a suit days of the series. Also my friend said it best, this movie was Grave of the Fireflies with Godzilla in it.
There's 2 instances when Godzillas theme is played, One on the first attack in the city and the other in the final confrontation with the boats, And in that scene it's used as a form of encouragement for the humans to have confidence moving forward with the plan, This is what made the movie for me, and the message "to Live" Brought me to tears, especially the ending
Just back from seeing GMO. It’s definitely as good, and in some ways better than the original. I appreciated the character development. You truly care about these people and the time spent with them does not detract from getting plenty of Godzilla screen time. The acting is pretty much top notch. The story is tight and moves along at a good pace. The scenes with Godzilla are at least as memorable as the original. Agree that holding off using the full Godzilla theme music till the very end amped up its emotional impact to the max. First movie I have been to in a long time where the audience applauded at the end.
I see at as an update to Ishiro Honda’s vision - this is the film he would have wanted to create if he had the budget and the tech that modern Hollywood has!
Just saw this in theaters last night! Goddamn it was amazing to watch! Like this really goes back to the old Godzilla route and making Godzilla the antagonist and making him scary! And for once, I really like the main character and his struggles and wanting him to be happy. This is an ABSOLUTELY must watch! Please support this movie! I legit cried at the end! I haven’t cried in a Godzilla movie since Godzilla vs Destroyah as a kid
What I loved about this movie was how emotionally driven the plot was. Unlike the legendary Godzilla sequels that lacked reasonable emotional depth, this one had a genuine “choosing life over death” message that actually touched me and made me cry throughout the film. Not only that, but the action scenes were genuinely gripping and I didn’t feel like any character could hide behind any plot armor. Each decision carried weight and it felt real! Overall, incredible movie 💙 Puts a lot of shame on todays cheap cash grabbing films!
I think everyone was blown away by the acting and story for the people in this Godzilla film. In Shin Godzilla, the fact it was a bunch bureaucrats was part of the joke. In Godzilla 2014 and King of the monsters, it was just stale cliches tacked on to a monster bash. Here it was really meaningful and important.
To say that you were still excited when doing this review would be the understatement of the entire history of the Universe since the Big Bang. Also, why do you apologize for being you? We expect the high noises coming out of you! I'm actually disappointed when I don't hear them. Then again, rare are the good movies in this era. So, I'm really happy that this movie is THAT HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII good!
Saw the movie today and MY GOD it was a GREAT movie! I remember seeing people being afraid of Godzilla when I watched the old movies as a kid but never really felt that Godzilla was scary... BUT here this movie had me both in awe AND terrified of Godzilla. I thought Shin Godzilla was chilling but GM1 Godzilla made me feel what the people felt in the movie. It was same feeling when I had in Legendary Godzilla King of the Monsters with the fight scene between Ghidorah and Godzilla, small. Oh and the Godzilla theme 😢 so majestically captivating I can never tire of it. Only complaint about the movie not enough Godzilla but BY GOD whenever he appeared, he always commanded your attention! Hands down if you are reading this and haven't seen the movie YOU NEED TO GO!
Glad you enjoyed it. I absolutely loved the film as well. The CGI is incredible. I'm glad they made him slow and heavy like it's still a suit but also gave him some more quickness with his tail and claws against a building or a ship.
It's probably going to be a long time before I get a chance to watch Minus One for myself (the theaters I used to live next to are all gone so I will not be able to watch it on the big screen) but I am still very much excited to see this new take on the G-Man! 😆😆
without any spoilers, M1 felt a lot like if GMK was redone, but without gidorah, mothra, and baragon. this seriously felt like godzilla not just got a reboot, but they took the brutality of GMK, and updated that menace, while putting some new limits on godzilla at the same time. it also put the ptsd of soldiers in the spotlight, and i have to respect that.
Another great detail about the movie is the historical aspects, all the ships/planes/tanks are for the most part, accurate, Takao, Yukikaze and Hibiki were all in service during the years in the film. It's not a big plot point or anything but it's such a tiny detail most films could just over look and instead have a placeholder, buy they made it accurate even down to the destroyers being unarmed
I just *loved* that scene in which Godzilla just shrugs of a salvo from the 8 inch guns of the Takao - it’s as though the message being sent here was that the greatest naval assets of this period are as nothing to this beast!
Easily my favorite movie I watched this year. Normally when I watch Godzilla movies I expect to watch a goofy fun monster movie. With this one however, I was actually terrified of Godzilla for the first time ever. My heart was racing the entire time. Especially the final battle scene.
My mom and I have a tradition every Christmas watching a couple tear jerker movies. We call it our waterworks marathon. This is probably the first movie she and I unanimously agree on being in the list within the Godzilla series. Some Godzilla movies have made us cry, but this one. Man, this movie had us at multiple points. To me it was a bit of a shock too. I've always watched him stomp buildings blast tanks and destroy monsters and I'm always pumped and rooting for him. This time, I wanted them to stop him, to kill him. I wanted every main character and even the SIDE characters to survive. I cared about side characters in a Godzilla movie...
I love this movie! About the actors for Koichi and Noriko, after making this they played a loving couple on "Ranman" that we watched daily for its six month run. So coming into this, as an audience in Japan, we're already emotionally attached to this couple. The best compliment I can pay to the human characters is that I would still want to watch a movie about them even if there was no Godzilla. I also felt pity for Godzilla, in the way you would for a rabid dog that needs to be put down. He's a bomb victim lashing out in anger, a wounded animal.
I would TOTALLY watch your husband's version, it sounds HILARIOUS!!! I went to go see GMO as a gift to myself because the past almost 4 months has been really rough, so I needed to treat myself. I saved up for the ticket, my cab fare, popcorn and snacks. This was the first time I went to the movies by myself, which was an interesting experience. I almost p*ssed myself with the introduction of Godzilla, I felt like I was in actual danger!!! This is my top movie for this year!!! I LOVED the character development. Godzilla being a villain was SO COOL!! The movie was a bit loud for me here and there but that's probably do to me having a bit more sensitive hearing. There were between 33 and 35 movie goers there, including myself. Which to me was a bit disappointing but it was nice having a small crowd. It was important to me to go on opening weekend because I dont think I've gone on opening weekend 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Plus opening weekend statistics are the most important numbers and I wanted to support my BOIII!! I LOVED the design of Godzilla and his abilities, how he healed was like "Oh sh*t!! You better run!!""This one's just built different" 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 So funny but yet SO true. Intro Godzilla looked, sounded, acted MONSTROUS, the rest of the movie he was Monstrous, and Monsterverse Godzilla is monster....I hope that makes sense, which I'm trying to say is that minus one Godzilla was a DANGEROUS Monster. When Godzilla was off screen and not doing anything I felt his presence, it was intimidating; imposing; anxiety inducing like he could attack at any moment...like HOLY COW it felt NICE to feel that about a monster/kaiju!!! After finishing the movie I IMMEDIATELY wanted to go purchase another ticket!!! I STILL want to go see it again!!! That has NEVER happened to me before!!! I might actually go do it in another week or so, it is THAT good!!!
This was the best film i have seen this year, dude... from beginning to end it was amazing and Godzilla was terrifying. Thats a first for me. Loved it.
Man..... This film was a masterpiece. A true Masterpiece. So much Emotion, Love that develops and most of all...Gojira!!!! The way he is fluent in water and the effects were so amazing, then they stuck to the old nostalgic way of the man in a suit walking through buildings. Godzilla looks so real to the touch and his presence is so powerful on the people. Then the Characters.... THEY actually make you care about them, I loved that aspect of simple but deep human emotion mixed with such action at the same time. The music is just icing on the cake honestly, they bring back the classic theme for the Gman from beginning to end building up tension. And as my one spoiler.... No... There are no 2 Godzillas... There is a smaller (Godzillasaurus) at the beginning that completely fucks up the squad the main character was with cuz he fails to shoot it at that moment and Godzilla goes back into the ocean to Evolve. Which I absolutely loved because that is the original story of Godzilla!!! This film will definitely make you afraid of Godzilla, and if you aren't a fan, You dont have to be to see this movie I Promise man. I fr almost cried at the end bruh.
great review and agreed with everything you said. Ive been a fan of godzilla movies sense i was 5 years old renting them from blockbuster. Godzilla Minus One gave me that same shock factor that the original Gojira movie embodied. Not wanting to spoil anything but im hoping what I think Yamazaki is going with in the future movies its going to be amazing and Godzilla Minus One will be needing several re-watches to see if any hints were given. Keep up the good work Alterori and Mele Kalikimaka.
Btw, as a quick bit of info, the Godzilla Theme itself was originally supposed to be the theme of Japanese Defense Force, so at the end when they were playing the more uplifting part of it, when all the civilian boats arrive to help, I took that as a bit of a nod to what the theme originally was supposed to be.
Can't wait to see this. Watched Shin Godzilla for the first time a few days ago. Awesome. Breath attack scene was, well, breathtaking. Excited for this one!
This was a very good in depth video. Have a day as great as your insight, content stream, movie taste, and personality. Please review more Godzilla movies
Let me start by saying, I quite enjoyed this movie a lot, and think its a really good movie. That said, I think the movie could have done a lot better job with Godzilla himself. I dont think its the best Godzilla movie, I feel like it belongs somewhere pretty high in the top 10 of the franchise. TLDR: My complaint is that Godzilla is solely a plot device in the movie, and not a character in the movie. Yes Godzilla is supposed to represent Japans post war guilt and PTSD, but what is he supposed to be in the actual plot of the movie? Let me explain. Godzilla is properly awesome, powerful, scary, and bad ass in this movie. They did a great job of showcasing his power, and just how intimidating Godzilla cam be. His atomic breath is probably the most awesome and spectacular ever, and that was amazing to see in the theater. BUT... What was Godzillas purpose in the movie? What was his goal? Where did he come from? Why was he attacking Tokyo? These are all skipped over. There is just a Godzilla in the movie, as if that was a normal occurrence, and the people of Japan have to deal with it. The movie does a great job of showing what Godzilla is capable of. But it does a terrible job of telling why hes doing what he is doing, or where he even came from. Basically Godzilla is solely a plot device in the movie, to further the humans characters story, and not a character in the movie. Godzilla has no agency, or purpose in the actual plot of the movie. Godzilla in Minus One, is a metaphor for PTSD and survivors guilt from the war. And thats as far as it goes. He is only a metaphor, and not a metaphor wrapped up in a character. You could almost edit Godzilla completely out of the movie, and it would not change much. For example, in the original Godzilla 1954, Godzilla was a metaphor for the atomic bomb. And in GMK Godzilla is a metaphor for the atrocities that Japan committed during ww2. The difference with them and Minus One though, is that the monster also had a purpose in the plots of those movies, beyond just being a metaphor. He has a reason for being in the story of those movies. In Minus One, Godzilla is used as a plot device only, and given no further depth then that. Godzilla is the catalyst and a symbol in this movie, but thats all he is. I feel like they could have done a little better job, of integrating Godzilla into the plot of the movie. Give him some agency or purpose, other then just being a symbol. There is a throw away line of "Hes expanding his territory", hinting that he is just an animal doing animal things. But his actions in the movie are not animalistic. I hate to compare it to 98, but that movie did a better jog of depicting Godzilla as an animal. The creature simply came ashore to build a nest in NYC, and largely ignored the foliage ie buildings, and the people, until it was attacked and provoked. In Minus One, Godzilla is deliberately attacking the city itself, and the people. Why? Thats not something an animal would do. So hes not acting like an animal, hes acting with deliberate intent. But we are offered no explanation or reason of why. Its really my only complaint about the movie. That Godzilla is a plot device in the movie, and not a character in the movie. I love Godzilla, and always enjoy it better when hes more then just a metaphor for something. When he has actual agency and identity, and relevance within the plot of the movie. Yes Godzilla is supposed to represent Japans post war guilt, but what is he supposed to be in the actual plot or story of the movie? If that was answered in the movie, then for me it would be in the top 5.
I think the main reason they focused on the street level character drama is because Shin Godzilla already was a movie that philosophized more about Godzilla and his intentions. Could Minus One elaborated a bit more on this? Definitely. It could have used at least one instance of them pondering what it was they were even trying to kill. But I feel Minus One wanted to leave that to other films, including the original which this is a prequel to. It decided to focus on one slice of what Godzilla meant to a core group of people we can feel for. It's a bit of a Rogue One to Godzilla's A New Hope in this way.
@@Vespyr_ I have no issues with a more street level focused movie. I really enjoyed the community angle this film was going for. But I fully agree that they could have at least had some scenes addressing the fact that they were fighting a giant monster who for some reason is attacking their home. Also what exactly was the USA or Russia or even Japans governments plan here? Like did they expect the locals to take out a giant monster? Did they think Godzilla was just going to go away? Its weird how the movie treats Godzilla like he is a local threat. Like he was just a Kappa causing a minor annoyance to the local populace. But he is a huge global threat. Maybe thats what makes me feel a little off about this movie. Godzilla is a giant threat to the entire planet, and no one seems to care. Maybe this movie will get a sequel, which will be Godzilla vs The World. It would be awesome to see this version of Godzilla, going up against the armies of humanity.
Couldn't agree more, good job not spoiling either. When you find out the main characters situation, in the very beginning, it shocked me. Blind is the way to go into this movie.
Hello Alteori. A beautiful Godzilla movie. Awesome. Godzilla's design, a bit of Shin, Heisei and Monsterverse, excellent combination. Love it. Anyway, another great video, Alteori, I like it, see you in the next one.
It’s easily the best movie I’ve seen this year of any genre. I’m a vet with guilt and this movie hit me to the bone. How they made this movie for $15M is beyond me.
It's clearly a labor of love. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the work was done gratis. And I'd bet the Japanese cast weren't demanding multi-million dollar salaries like Hollywood's do.
So Toho had an agreement with legendary so Toho wasn’t able to release any Godzilla films til legendarys we’re done . This movie has been in production since 2018-2019 so I’m guessing that gave them enough time to polish up the movie and take their time. They weren’t rushed and might have had a year or so to get things right whereas in Hollywood they might only have 6 months before there deadline is up to get things as best as they can.
You said in an interview that the young CGI craftsmen were so particular about each cut that some cuts weren't made in time, and that they created the final forest scene themselves.@@ShellsGhost1
I disagree that Shin Godzilla was "afraid." Reactionary, yes, but not afraid. The way he was portrayed, I attribute him to almost a zombie: nearly emotionless/lifeless, operating purely on instinct. I think from what we saw in his earlier forms, Shin Godzilla was probably in a delusional, pained state of mind. Early shots of him made it seem like he was barely aware of what was going on, and almost confused about what was occurring with him in terms of his rapid evolution. While he did exhibit recognition of pain, I never saw a creature who was fearful.
I know what shocked me the most was that in the very first scene, we see Godzilla in full. Roughly 3 minutes into the movie, we all know he's gonna attack Odo Island because duh. It's Odo Island. But rather than a quick glimpse or people shooting at something offscreen, dude shines a spotlight and he's right there. Second most soul crushing (which is immediately followed by the first) is when the tanks fail to seriously harm Godzilla. The fleeing crowd just... gives up. They cry, hug loved ones, or simply wait for the end because they've realized there's no hope of surviving. People running and trying desperately to survive is pretty powerful (at least when the focus is actually kept on them rather than just making them kill tallies for the monster) but people simply giving up and waiting to die is way more so.
While my reaction to movies is equivalent to a machine that runs on what little gas that's left, yet it's filled with diesel, this movie made me react so hard that it was almost foreign. I even felt teary-eyed a couple times.
“Godzilla Minus One kicks ass!” I couldn’t agree more! As a longtime G-fan, this is the dark, apocalyptic blockbuster take on Godzilla that I’ve been waiting for Hollywood to make FOR YEARS! You can only imagine how surprised I was that it was Godzilla’s original studio, Toho, to be the one to make such a movie! To put it simply, I love this movie! I still can’t get over how much I love it, let alone how much praise and success this movie is getting (Well deserved, may I add)! This movie fulfilled my expectations for “Godzilla 2014” when Legendary Pictures first teased us with that 2012 Comic-Con trailer (Before Legendary pulled the “Bait and Switch” on everyone). “Minus One” is what the 2014 film THINKS it is! It tells an emotional and compelling human story while still providing all the awesome kaiju action that you would hope for. In all seriousness, “Minus One” has been an absolute blessing (and I don’t use that term lightly, if ever)!
@@Shift4g I didn't even know the name of the song until I looked it up after Alteori mentioned it. I heard her describe it and thought that it was that one song from Charlie's Angel's that the bad guy was dancing to and sure enough it was.
What i love about this Godzilla design is that not only does he looks convincingly terrifying, his design was so brimming with personality, HIS EYES despite being a rampaging monster shows clear sign of intelligence, it screams so much of how his grudge against Humanity is PERSONAL.

I’m so used to seeing Godzilla fighting other monsters while destroying cities. Seeing him just straight out killing civilians is a shock.
watch the original Godzilla, Godzilla 1984, Shin Godzilla
If you watch GMK all monsters all out attack you be even more shock.
Godzilla has always done that
Im so done with Batman figthing supercriminals Im just want to see him fighting mob bosses and corrupt cops.
AWESOME @AITEORI SERIOUSLY
Japan almost never disappoints when it comes to godzilla movies
I like how you added the "almost" caveat.
They've produced a few stinkers over the decades for sure.
@@IaMaPh1991they've made so many, a few were bound to drop the ball haha
Gvs Hedorah wasn't one of my favorites
Really hope this movie at least gets nominated for best picture cause it absolutely deserves it
I know the director won best director in Japan for it.I can see it up for best foreign film for the Oscar’s
No doubt about it
It was great, for a Godzilla film.
not enough diversity in its cast and crew to be nominated.

An actual plot and characters I care about? It was so good!
This is pure cinema. Something that has been lost for a long time in Hollywood.
Tbf, that was the normal size for Godzilla for a long time, especially in Japan. It was (mostly) America that decided he needed to be way bigger
Godzilla became 100 meters tall in the Japanese90s movies, because he started looking small in comparison to newer skyscrapers.
This is the Godzilla of my dreams and the one of my nightmares. What a homage to the 1st 1954 film while making it’s own mark on the 70th anniversary
Godzilla hates all people equally...be like Zilla
@jared8530 Nah, Zilla and Godzilla are two different entities. The American 98 version is Zilla, cuz there ain't no God in him according to Toho
I was worried that the characters were going to die and I've never felt that happen in a Godzilla movie before.

You saw the original in theaters!? Wow! What an honor. I will watch them all
@@Alteori Yep!
@@Alteori That's good to hear. It's about time you check out the other Godzilla movies!
RIGHT!!! I was crying too and I have no kids
This is a Godzilla movie. A masterpiece since Godzilla 1954
Na I cried, I laughed, I held my breath. This movie got real emotions out of me. During the attack on Ginza my heart dropped. This movie isn't just a good Godzilla movie, its a great piece of cinema
This may very well be the most vicious Godzilla I've seen. Loved seeing the Big G be just an absolute menace
EDIT: I NEED THAT VOICE OVER FOR THIS GODZILLA!
I’m saying. I’d love to see minus one in his mind like the other pov videos in the channel
Great story, great pacing, great atmosphere, great characters, great acting, great effects, and definitely one the best Depictions of Godzilla to this day right up there with 1954, 1984, GMK, and Shin.
where did you see it??? I cannot find it anywhere online
@@RaulGonzalez-to1xb AMC and Regal Galaxy
Wow u seen it 3 times and going 2 see it 2 more times lol im on no. 1 and goings back one more time i hope !!!😊😊😊
Tbh I dont think toho ever put much more thought into his size other than "he looks small compared to newer buildings"
also having it set in a more analog technology era helps raise stakes too 👍
The $15 million has me asking lots of questions, is the cost of living in Japan much lower than USA? so CGI artists can be paid less? Or is cost of living comparable to USA so then are they underpaid? Did they hire less crew to work longer hours and they cool with that? Or they really struggled in production? Are USA production crew overpaid then?
He waited for the 70th Anniversary..appropriate I must say😅
Great point! The “small” version of Godzilla on Odo Island at the beginning of _Minus One_ is more terrifying than any Monsterverse portrayal of Godzilla.
I loved how Godzilla was staring at everything he destroyed like he was pleased with himself
Aside from the original film, which was pretty brutal, and really didn't hold back much.
@@realtsavo I believe GMK from 2001 was one of the core films that influenced Yamazaki besides 54 and that film was pretty brutal too.
It's a must-see on the Big Screen!! This has brought back some great movie vibes!!

The atomic breath was AMAZING!
This movie reminded me of attack on Titan. Made me root for humanity!
Stark difference to western movies where you root against humanity.
Yes. Just watch it first. Then watch the reviews. It’s icing on the cake.
There's 2 instances when Godzillas theme is played,
One on the first attack in the city and the other in the final confrontation with the boats,
And in that scene it's used as a form of encouragement for the humans to have confidence moving forward with the plan,
This is what made the movie for me, and the message "to Live"
Brought me to tears, especially the ending
Overall, incredible movie 💙
Puts a lot of shame on todays cheap cash grabbing films!
👍🏻
An amazing Godzilla movie and an amazing movie period. See it in a theater! Wish I could give this review ten thumbs up!
Best Godzilla movie 🦖 possibly ever. just seen it in 4DX theater. pretty wild. That Atomic Breath is ruthless 😵

I didn’t cry but I did tear up quite a bit and was moved very much by the wonderful acting, one of the best movies I’ve seen!!
😅 You're right. Thank you. Sometimes I embarrass myself thought lol
I can imagine an alternate universe where Monsterverse Godzilla finally considered humans a threat for the planet and go Minus One
This one was a masterpiece.
One of the few times i got scared for the humans in a godzilla movie, he really was that scary.
I'm making a effort to memorize the characters names in the movie that's how much I liked them.
Watched it in 4D, man those blasts were insane to sit through. Great movie!
I honestly needed this after they turned him and king kong whole superheroes
Looks fantastic, this should be the blockbuster movie of the year, not out here in the UK yet but definitely going to watch it!!
I couldn’t believe they made this film for 15 million. It’s a masterpiece. As you said, a perfect blend of monster and human drama.
Loved it.
A very extensive review! I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself! This Movie is a real boon for all Godzilla fans!
So hype to see this movie tomorrow 🔥🔥🔥
Can't wait to see this movie after watching Shin Godzilla
As they wanted this to tie to the first film they kept his standing motion. This was such a good prequel for the first film.
great review and agreed with everything you said.

Haven't watched the video or the movie yet, just gotta say that it's great to have more enjoyable cinema. Much love lass!

The scene where they are getting ready to face Godzilla and out of nowhere a ship just flies over their heads and destroys a building made me gasp.
Really hyped to see this.
This movie literally brought me to tears, who would’ve thought a Godzilla movie would do that, best movie of the year

Wait, are you serious?! Then the American film industry needs to step up!
The director did some of the VFX himself.
Thanks for your thorough review. I've only seen it once, but GMO is definitely my favorite Godzilla movie right now.
Truely you liked this movie. Cannot wait to see it. Great Review, yes, even the "This is how my brain turns off".
saw this today can’t wait to see it again
unfortunately not being shown in my local cinema or with many sessions elsewhere but so worth the travel
The second best Godzilla movie behind Godzilla 1954
A modern day classic
While my reaction to movies is equivalent to a machine that runs on what little gas that's left, yet it's filled with diesel, this movie made me react so hard that it was almost foreign.
I even felt teary-eyed a couple times.
Just saw it... academy award worthy
Best Minus One review I've heard, and I've seen like 20 or 30 so far. 👏
Omg thank you so much!
I did enjoy Shin-Godzilla too no doubt but man say Minus One easily blew that movie of the water
Wooooooo! Awesome to hear definitely going to check it out!
I think the song you're thinking of Alteori is Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says
I used to actually listen to this while watching old G films on mute lol
@@Shift4g I didn't even know the name of the song until I looked it up after Alteori mentioned it. I heard her describe it and thought that it was that one song from Charlie's Angel's that the bad guy was dancing to and sure enough it was.
What i love about this Godzilla design is that not only does he looks convincingly terrifying, his design was so brimming with personality, HIS EYES despite being a rampaging monster shows clear sign of intelligence, it screams so much of how his grudge against Humanity is PERSONAL.
