I don't know why they keep trying to make these movies about Kong when Godzilla's the one putting butts in seats.
Kong solo made more than any Godzilla solo movie. There are plenty of Kong fans all over the world and not only that many fans wanna see them team up and fight, this movie is breaking records and making bank so pretty much MV delivered again

The fact that this movie is breaking records and making bank and the die hard fans are loving it shows that Legendary knows what their doing giving the fans what they want and need and sticking to what it is. Plus showa era Godzilla movies had plenty of team ups and monsters fighting each other. MV will continue to thrive as always so 😂🤷🏽♂️
NAh bud, this is a Kaiju film. we got exactly what we wanted. Monsters fighting each other. it's opening weekend is proving that.

I really liked 'Godzilla' (2014) and 'Kong: Skull Island', and I had good expectations for the Monsterverse, but now it feels as if they've gone complacent. Minus One, on the other hand, was such a refreshing surprise.
Thorias, I appreciate you, but I am going to counter-signal you here. because I think you're so far off the mark. You not liking the movie is entirely your prerogative, and I'm not going to argue that you should.
This move and Godzilla Minus One are not just different movies, they're not even in the same genre, it'd be like comparing Schindler's List to Predator. GxK was never intended or advertised to be a somber allegory of human drama. This was the action-adventure epic that's supposed to deliver a lot of fun. Remember when a movie could be Fun? This movie is like all the best parts of the Showa era crammed into one, with Kong's hero arc thrown in for good measure.
Wingard gets that the monsters are not limited to being these unknowable titans of esoteric motivations and purpose, but that they can be characters as well. Kong is our actual hero here, striving to save his people from the tyranny of the cruel Skar King, but he understands he can't do it without Godzilla's help. Godzilla, conversely, is responding to the call for help by preparing himself for an inevitable showdown, and it's not until Mothra intervenes that he understands that he and Kong are on the same side.
The humans have a functional side plot that plays an influential role in the monster's course of events, and that's where they're best utilized. They have sufficient drama and humor to be followable characters, but their story isn't why we're here, they don't need to have complex arcs or do much changing.
While I do think there's some plot conveniences with how fast certain things happen or get resolved, but I don't think it's anything that really breaks the movie. In that respect, some of the dialog, and how the Irish/Scottish security guy gets killed, I feel like he could have worked on the script a bit more.
I mean all this to say, Thorias, that I don't begrudge you not liking the movie, I just don't think you 'got' the movie.
If our friend here forgets that what brought Godzilla to the popular consciousness were his VS movies, I also realized that having extremes in the tone of his products is very good because it has the Japanese side that puts his original idea of the character of be a natural destructive force with twists to renew Godzilla himself while the Western one at first tried to be serious but went in the style of the showa era with a better budget but it means how flexible the franchise is if the movie has its mistakes but it doesn't mean that they don't give what they say, that is, giant kaiju fights that are already an essential part of the IP

It's what I expected honestly, It's does nothing wrong. It's just a film about Godzilla and and Kong being themselves and fighting monsters. Nothing special but just a popcorn flick. I would take this film any day over all the up it's own backside and political stuffed films you get from Disney or most film studios these days.

Showa Era: Let me introduce myself
Godzilla is a versatile character, he is not just one thing.
It's as if this kid didn't even watch the review. Love how Thorias never once stated nor implied that he wanted every Godzilla movie to be the same, in his own words he says that he knows and loves the goofy side of kaiju.

I can understand wanting to pay homage to the Showa era films, but that is not an excuse in this day and age to justify terrible writing and mindless story. It’s fine to want kaiju action and fun in a film but in 60 years you would think we should have a higher standard for entertainment when it comes to writing, characters and plot. This is especially true for a film that probably had a higher budget than all of the Showa era films put together, which even with their issues have better plots and messaging than most modern “spectacle” films. They weren’t the best but most of them had an actual lesson behind them besides “watch monster stomp stuff”.
Most of the people making the Showa films did the best they could with the budgets they had and I doubt they would would find it gratifying to hear their films being touted as garbage to excuse our modern films lack of effort in everything but the spectacle ( which I agree is way less impactful now that it’s everywhere). It’s odd that this is the common excuse made by “fans” that don’t seem to care about the franchise any further than the monster fights. Few seem to have ever delved into the themes of each film that go beyond that. Granted some are more just for fun but a majority of them are at least trying to explore something deeper and with some meaning which is all I really want from the modern films. I want substance first but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fun spectacle as well (look at Aliens for example. Lots of action but also an interesting story, excellent writing and character development). I’m just tired of seeing films put way more effort into effects than anything else.
With that said I haven’t seen the film yet so I can’t confirm or deny the critiques made but they sound about right for what I was expecting

Here's the thing you can't do a dark and serious tone with Godzilla every movie. If you're a fan of the franchise you should know this fact already. We gone from dark and serious to fun and lighthearted. Every era has done this and I'm glad the Monsterverse has done this. We can have two different tones for Godzilla. 0:40 that's your issue you want another minus one sorry but that's not how this works get over it. 2:55 that's basically the Showa era.

I never said every Godzilla movie had to be dark and serious. But even a wacky, goofy, action spectacle movie is allowed to be good. This wasn't. The story was ridiculous, it didn't seem to care about anything, etc. I get wanting to focus on the big CG monster battles, but we know what those things look like now. So if that's all the movie is bringing to the table, well... there's nothing new about that.

But either way I still am just not interested in these movies, the weirdness I'm down for but if it's just spectacle and weirdness for the sake of it then I just find it boring. This movie to me seems incredibly boring.

This is something I've been seeing a lot of when it comes to people reviewing Zilla X Kong here or on Twitter. They continuously compare it to Minus One even though it's a completely different movie.
To me, it feels as though people who've seen that film suddenly believe they know what Godzilla has to be, serious and grounded. When many Godzilla fans, including me, enjoy and love the actual goofiness of the Showa era.
Dude, comparing Godzilla Minus One to Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is like comparing The Dark Knight to Adam West Batman. Not equal and made for two different audiences.

This movie is not trying to be minus one. This is a popcorn flick with giant monsters. Most reviews i have seen including this one are referencing the human characters and drama of minus one and that is not what this movie is going for. If it did, it would have been called an inferior copy of minus one and rightfully so. This is a monster movie with some cool battles that are fun to watch with popcorn and coke. Still a huge fan of TU but i respectfully disagree with this review. Minus One is masterpiece but that doesn't mean GVK 2 isn't awesome. Both movies are great in their own way.

I feel like this could have been an attempt at doing the “kaijus, no humans” movie that many have asked for. Kong was remarkably expressive and formed that bond with the younger monkey well, we just needed to see more of their interactions. Cut the film of the human bits here and let Kong’s character shine through and you also get to toot the horn of “Our film had no dialogue”. At the very least, I felt Kong was more emotive than 95% of the actors in the film
Honestly, that might of worked. And Thorias probably would have liked it way more. If it had *genuinely* been all kaiju, and all the character focus had been such as you describe, it would have been way better. The recent Planet of the Apes movies work because the Apes really are the focus of the emotional story

We need a break from these crossovers and more solo standalone films about King Kong and Godzilla individually that are also more scaled back and grounded instead of being superhero type rip offs all the dang time. Even I can get tired of the repetitiveness of dumb fun like the MonsterVerse if there’s nothing but the same energy going forward. GXK needs to be the end of this first phase, and the next film needs to be a solo movie to either character imo! We need a long ass break from the crossover world ending threat events. We definitely need a change of scenery and coloring. 💯
I think the one Godzilla movie where the humans were interesting to watch and had no boring scenes was Shin Godzilla. I was so imvested in their reactions to the different forms of Godzilla and how proactively they were working to figure out a way to neutralize it.
As a godzilla fan.... who cares about the human characters. I dont want to see a human focused story in godzilla. I have other options for that. I want to see godzilla. The movie delivered what it was suppose to deliver.

About that human connection part - the movie sure made an attempt to get me to care about the main scientist lady from the last one and her adopted daughter, and the actress is obviously giving it all she's got -and way more than this caliber of movie deserves- and they do what they can to make the human characters kind of essential to things playing out right with awakening Mothra and giving Kong the Power Glove ("it's so bad")... But every time they could capitalize on an emotional beat, there's always comic relief side characters to turn the mood around. It's like the movie has 2 pairs of main actors - podcast guy and titan vet understood what movie they're in, and science lady and daughter hoped they were in something more than it was.
I'm sorry, this is such a dumb review. Comparing this movie to minus one is in itself such a dumbass thing to do and I feel like this video is a "cash grab". Both movies are good and great in their own different ways. It's like comparing E.T with Aliens they're both alien movies but they're VERY DIFFERENT. That doesn't make either of them bad movies or worse than the other. Just because minus one is a completely serious movie basically having the same plot and theme of the first ever godzilla movies doesn't make it better than the monsterverse movies which is supposed to be fun, giant monster action movies. Godzilla Minus 1 is more human focused and this movie is more monster focused. Which is understandable, the problem is they keep putting in human drama and I just don't care because these films haven't built the humans up in a way to where it matters. Kong Skull Island did a good job of doing that, but every other one did not
Watched it this week, the story was about as deep as a puddle. The human cast was so useless honestly, most of them could have been cut from the movie and it would play it out the same. What actually was irritating, Tiamat was a kaiju that apparently was just there in the arctic, all this time, chilling in it's lair not bothering anyone, not destroying cities. But Tiamat had to die for reasons only godzilla knows. Then they barely explain what gozilla does inside of tiamat's lair but comes out all purple upgraded. At the end of the movie, where gozilla fights that frozen lizzard, he leaves that one alive after the red gorilla is dead. So why leave that one alive? Why did Tiamat need to die? I actually liked the idea there being a female kaiju that is this evil looking snake dragon just chilling in it's lair in the artic. Don't know why but actually loved the idea about that. Unfortunately, godzilla had to kill tiamat to steal something from her. So weird, feels like I had to take a drugs to understand the logic in this movie most the time.
The teaser trailers made the movie's plot look intriguing. But then you watch it, and it's like they just asked chatgpt to write a kong godzilla movie.
I would add that it appears GXK has the same problem as Pacific Rim II...no weight. You watch the first PR and the Kaiju and mechs have weight, they lumber under their mass, while the second one they were bebopping around like they were made of plastic and the trailer for GXK gave the same zero weight vibe as PR II.
Dude, the main characters are Godzilla and Kong. The humans are supporters. Get over it. Why hate the monsters being the stars of movies when their names are in the title?

I think the whole things boils down to how different cultures tell stories, some are compelling, some are emotional, and other are entertaining just that, nothing wrong with all the options, one was made in Japan and the other was made in the US different cultures, different markets, different goals and definitely different budgets
The main character is Kong, him freeing his people from slavery is the plot of the movie. The humans are the side story.

If the person responsible for minus 1 enjoyed GxK then thats the best critic for this movie! People want to see slugfest between titans and we got what we wanted. I love this movie! I'm tired of the human stories which detract from the real action. I'm glad they kept it to a minumum. Packed theater and lots of cheering and epic monster action! Its on the majority of the screens at the theater I went to. On IMAX its absolute amazing!

Both can and should exist.
Bro both of those movies are classic martial arts movies and both are silly and goofy in their own way and both are entirely different stories that cannot ever be compared to Godzilla movies and both of them are also far better than any Godzilla movie.
I enjoyed this movie for different reasons to Minus One. GxK is more in line with the goofy classic monster movies. Guys in rubber suits fighting each other in campy ways and even teaming up. A movie to speak to your inner child and makes you wanna jump in your seat.
Minus One is a movie that reminds us why Godzilla exists in the first place. The gravity and horror that spawned from a destructive force that scarred a people for generations. It’s a movie that makes you think and really feel the impact. While making you grip your seat.
Both movies play their part and everyone has their own tastes. Godzilla as a franchise is not limited to one specific genre. He’s an icon that has evolved to fit the story that’s needed. He’s a hero, anti-hero and villain all rolled into one.

I disagree entirely with this review. It's not a good idea to compare Minus One with The New Empire because both movies are in different classes from one another. One's an emotional story and the other is a fantasy story. Both movies are awesome in their own way. In my opinion, I love them both and I got what I came here for when it came to these films: fun. I had fun with both of these movies and I will go see them again when they come out on dvd or if I see The New Empire in theaters again. Weird and Goofy, hell yeah it is and it knows it. Disposable and Forgettable, not by a long shot especially when a sequel is over the horizon.

It's a totally different vibe and movie. GxK is a Showa Era homage. Minus 1 is based off of the original Gojira from 54. It's like app6and oranges. Their both fruit but their different kinds of fruit. Except it for what it is and have fun. It seems as if your angry because u didn't get the same emotional Rollercoaster minus 1 gave u. 1 movie is serious and the other is just crazy old school escapism. Why even watch it if this is the result? I absolutely loved both movies for different reasons.

X-men episode 3 when?
First off I’m going to admit that I both like this film but did not like the film. And honestly it’s for some pretty petty reasons. I am a huge fan of the Godzilla movies because when I was young my parents didn’t really want me watching a lot of horror movies because they thought I would be scared but they thought the Godzilla films would be a good halfway point to get me into monster movies. And honestly I don’t think they understood that some of the films were pretty graphic even if they were kind of hokey back in the day. But because of it I developed a very strong love for all of the monsters in the Godzilla universe and growing up watching them a look back on some of the old films and thought to myself with special effects getting better the time needs to come to get these monsters a new look or to basically give them upgrade. Which is why one of my favorite films in the franchise was the Godzilla King of monsters because for the first time we got a lot of monsters but at the same time it was a letdown on what monsters they chose. First off Rodin was one of my favorite monsters from the original films and I loved how they gave him a really much-needed redesign for his more pterodactyl look they also kept his special ability of manipulating air currently his giant wings but they also throwing a lot of the lore of the fact that he likes to live near volcanoes and when he would come out he had some lava and flame still on his body. The next was the main threat and my top favorite Godzilla villain King Ghidorah…Much like Rodin he was liberated from the guy in the bodysuit and wires and cables and was able to give more of a medicine dragon appearance. No I wasn’t a huge fan of the redesign of Mothra but it kind of grew on me after a while and I guess it’s OK but I was kind a hoping for something a little more closer to the actual movies. But then there comes the real reason why I didn’t also not like the movie because I feel like they kind of like cut corners by creating their own kaiju instead of dipping into some of the more well-known monsters from the original franchise. Yes I did come to see Godzilla and King Ghidorah fight…..But I also came for the promise of lots of kaiju appearing just to find out it was just a bunch of made up Kaiju that they created to fill in the gap. Which is why it’s weird how this movie was so good about the same time I feel like it was a waste of potential not because of the reasons that were put out by Thorias, much like King of monsters the creators just made yet another bad guy and in my opinion he was kind of a let down any kind of bad ass-ness he was trying to flex was just unbelievable in fact the only way he was able to win his first fight with Kong was by summoning the real power and I was the ice kaiju. No I’m gonna say I did like the new monster because it looked like something that would come from the original series. But the concept the main feeling being yet another evil ape just was not appealing enough for me to fully like this film. I mean maybe if the scar king had maybe some kind of supernatural powers like telekinesis mind control to back up but now he’s just another scrawnier version of an ape who has use weapons and a monster that he is safe with some kind of magical Jewel to basically do all his fighting for him. And once he lost these things he was an absolute joke! The movie the letdown because I feel like they could’ve used another more threatening Godzilla villain from the franchise as the main focus. Heck during the credits of King of monsters and Godzilla versus King Kong there was Easter eggs implying the return of a lot of possible Kai Ju for the original franchise. I’m just gonna say I wasn’t a huge fan of Macha-Godzilla. Which pains me because Mecha Godzilla was one of my favorites as a kid. But I will give it a break because looking back the original did not look that great and only when he was returning in other movies with upgrades and improvements to his design did he finally become the version I loved. But back to my nitpick and rant that there was a lot of bigger threats that they could’ve put into this film, especially considering that they’re starting to go down a more goofy route like we could’ve gotten space Godzilla….Biollante Who was created from mixing the genes of Godzilla and a mutated plant with funny enough the soul of the scientist his daughter(we can probably cut that out of the story or fix that because it’s just really ridiculous) and I think the biggest villain most fans want to see is the introduction of Destoroyah, which was implied in King of monsters by the fact of the government was using a weapon called the oxygen destroyer which was the weapon that gave birth to him.
And honestly considering all the stuff that happened in new empire I would not be surprised also considering that the government is trying to go after monarch that they don’t start experimenting secretly to try to create something that will get rid of all the monsters and I can see the two monsters I just mentioned as possible creatures to show up in the franchise based on that.

after they wrote out the MOnarch Crew from KoTM and phased out Madison & her father in GvK, I just watched the film to see how it went. it wasn't as bad as I was expecting but it definitely wanst even as good as KoTM. the stakes aren't really there and Godzilla isnt even in the movie enough. the shift to him like "ok here's what Godzilla is doing right now" then back to Kong & the human characters. not to mention the tribe had NOTHING to do with Mothra but somehow they need th edeaf child to "reawaken" her? where were the twins that were the homage to the OG films? oh they're gone liek the rest of the KoTM Monarch Crew.
wingard has some decent ideas but Dougherty was better at putting things on screen.
Dude I liked minus one but honestly. Seeing a guy cry his eyes out after a nuclear blast from Godzilla thinking of his own inadequacies is not what I want here.

When I think back to the majority of Godzilla films in my life minus one is the few… the original gojira and 85. The ones I fell in love with were bonkers and silly.
these legendary films appear to be written by 9 year olds, and there is nothing wrong in enjoying them, its still fucking stupid and absolutely horrendous story writing coated with a paint of cgi. video game cutscenes and ai generators are going to be able to fill that stupid moron monster fight feel and then the morons who spent 200 million making a piece shit that no one remembers are STILL going to keep making more. its a cycle of garbage.

Yes, i know it's a movie who's entire point is giant monsters fighting, but in godzilla vs. kong they treated the premise in a serious way. It was still inherently a dumb action movie, but for those to really work you need that level of melodrama that really makes it fun to play along. You may know what you're seeing is silly, but it's almost like you're roleplaying at that point and that's where the enjoyment comes from
This movie treats itself like a joke the entire time. People talk about the world as we knot it ending but act as if they're just kind of there to watch the monkeys beat each other up to.... it honestly feels like an extended toy commercial and it's disappointing.
Im not a fan of these types of movies at all. Just stopped by to watch and comment to support the channel! Hope you find something interesting to watch soon. It sure isnt Xmen97... I have been enjoying the british show Extraordinary. Not great, but fun to watch and see what disgusting superpower or inappropriate use of a superpower they come up with next.

I just watch this movie and I really dont like how they recon the mothra priests.... they show mothra has leaves an egg somewhere and now we have some kong worshiper from skull island that can just summon mothra out of thin air.... it's so dumb... i mean sure mothra is magical even in universal monsterverse... but she is still show to have to be born again with an egg... just having that kid from skull island to summon mothra randomly is just lore breaking.... i want to see mothra again, but not like this... and especially not after they did so well with mothra in godzilla king of monsters...
You are comparing Japanese wagyu beef to American hamburger. They both are good, but vastly different; and they cannot be compared or meet. Only the Japanese can really get Godzilla right at times.( Not Godzilla movies during the Showa 1970s. They were fun but the humans were, for the most part, forgettable) We just turned Godzilla, and Kong, into ridiculous superhero monsters in blockbuster crap. The monsterverse is now over. Skar king; and we would think Megalon was a forgettable foe.

i'm gonna be honest: i don't give a flying fuck about the humans in a giant monster movie. Get rid of them all and just make the movie about two titans punching each other in the mouth gloriously for 2h because one looked at the other funny.
I like the other movies in this series, but the trailer for this movie did nothing for me. As soon as I saw they went the 'BABY" route I knew it was going to suck. Every time movies introduce the "babies" of the characters, the movie sucks. Transformers did it with Dinobot babies (I'm still trying to figure THAT one out) Ghostbusters with Stay Puft babies, etc. That's usually the moment in any series when it really goes downhill. Plus, what's with all the neon? The trailer was loaded with neon. Also, didn't they do the "mom and daughter in peril" thing in one of the other movies already? And of course it's a "non white" daughter with a white mother and of course she's deaf and has to "sign". Gotta get them ESG points.

Yeah, his movie really came off more as a toy commercial from all the promos, in the same vein as Batman and Robin. Don't get me wrong, I like me some silly Godzilla movies, but this...isn't my kind of silly Godzilla movie. It really feels like a big dumb American toy commercial.
It was simply either a movie promoting THE MESSAGE or a CGI fest popcorn movie. Few good writers available now exemplified with Godzilla giving Kong a suplex.
There's no message and yes this is just generic and basic popcorn flick.

This is true. I suppose I was spoiled because I grew up with a lot of kid's content that was really smart and sophisticated, which made me expect more from this type of stuff. I understand the appeal of the turn-your-brain-off-popcorn-action flicks, but I just have so little patience for them because I know how much better they could be with a little work.

@@thoriasunlimited4053as a kid I was very into things like Dragon Ball, Avatar, Spliced, Yu-Yu-Hakusho, etc..... things I probably shouldn't have been watching at 6 and 8 but they definitely influenced, inspired and made me happy as a kid and some of them still do inspire me to this day. I just grew up on shows that were filled with interesting characters and stories that made me care for the people and the workd that they're in in their own unique way, they had actual heart and soul and effort put into them.
It's very sad to see how basic so many of the mainstream things are, I just wish better characters, better story, consistent writing and events etc.... was also all mainstream, look at what happened to Marvel, prime example of going from character driven to message driven, and the biggest sin of all, to being extremely bland and boring.
I lost all interest when the "dentist" flew in to pull Kongs bad tooth. I mean wtf was that and why? They could have saved a couple million in cgi and screen time for another Kaiju fight. Anything but a damn dentist scene ffs

Bad writing example #50: It was really convenient that the scrapped Kong-sized Iron Man armor only made far enough to only get one giant glove ready and it just happened to be the exact hand Kong broke.
AND it just happened to be equipped to treat Kong for frostbite of all things despite Hollow Earth seemingly having a jungle-esque climate. I mean, what are the odds?!

it's tough to compare minus one with monsterverse... it's like comparing '54 godzilla with the movies from the 60s and 70s... both can be enjoyed
to me the monsterverse peaked with 2019' King Of The Monsters, it had recognizable monsters from the canon, great action, great visuals... and disposable people around, but they're useful enough
Godzilla vs Kong had good action but felt 'mid' sometimes, and the human cast was awful. now the action feels a little stupid, the villain feels weak without the white kaiju...
also, Kong... being a primate makes him more expressive, but that allows some stupid scenes, dumb comedy...
The truth is that if it is not right to think that both are of the same type, together with the fact that Godzilla is multifaceted, he is practically like heroes like Batman or Superman, while this well done can have him in both silly and crazy or serious and introspective situations.
