I'm here only because I still have carb issues after rebuild!!! I will try drill bit idea, if still doesn't work, will get new carb( made in china of coarse)

This is a great video. I am a 68 year old woman who never had taken a carb apart but followed these instructions and, voilå, the engine now runs like a champ. Jet was clogged, just as he says is often the problem. Just FYI: Needle valve - 1 1/2 to 2 turns out from seating it: idle 3/4 to 1 turns out from seating.

This was the best UA-cam DYI I have seen. I never worked on a carb before and this video covered everything that got in my way and how to avoid/fix it. My old snowblower that I was going to throw out if I could not get it to run is now ready to clear my driveway. I cannot thank Donyboy73 enough.

Donyboy73, just wanted to say thank you for this video. I had a 1975 Mastercraft 8hp that wouldn't start. It had spark so I knew it wasn't getting fuel. I cleaned the carburetor (thanks for pointing out the tiny hole on the needle) and put it back together...still nothing. I even tried the prime the cylinder with no luck. Anyway, I did a bunch of other things (gas lines, cleaned the flywheel etc.) And decided to watch your video again to see if I did anything differently. The only thing I noticed was you put the "air box" back on the down draft carburetor. So I did that...started first pull. It was the first time I have worked on these type of carburetors and I didn't realize the air box has to be in place. Anyway, thanks again ...much appreciated!

I'm working on this same exact engine from an old 1967 snowblower. It did work when I got it free a few weeks ago. I cleaned the carb but now it won't start. But are you telling me the air box has to be installed for it to start? Are you sure it wasn't something else? I'm going back out to the engine and try to start it with the airbox and I will advise you right away if it works.

Thanks for your assistance. My snowblower is about 14 years old and wasn't idling correctly. It was running up and down on idle, which I call looping. Watching your video, I was able to take the carburator lower bowl off, clean the jets with carb cleaner. I then turned the snowblower on it's front open auger area. The carb was facing up. I shot about 2 to 3 oz's of carb cleaner into the opening and left it there for 30 minutes. When I layed the snowblower back on it's skids, the crystal clear cleaner came out gunky yellow!! I put everthing back together, and voia! Perfect idle with no looping. Thanks

First of all THANKS SO MUCH for this vid. I'm about to rebuild another B & S engine for this Sears Roto-Spader circa 1977,
garden tiller, A REAL workhorse! My second Briggs with this tiller,.. and my 1st rebuild.
Gathering all related info I can find to see this rebuild thru, and found your video.
That particular carb your working on is a "B & S Medium Two Piece Flo-Jet Carburetor"(#390323).
FYI, every one pay particular attention to 'emulsion tube', that long tube you removed after main needle. In it's center is the hole for the main fuel adjustment needle. Do diligence when cleaning all these openings.
    Thanx again for posting!

Great video! I followed it and was able to resurrect my 8HP portable generator. So I went beyond that step and am going to put a carb kit in. Most of it looks self explanatory but I'm wondering if I need an adhesive for the gasket or can I just install without adhesive? I remember working on cars in my youth where I believe we used some sort of adhesive on gaskets but this is my first carburetor. Can you help? Thanks again...

Very well done. Good voice, clearly spoken, good camera control. Enjoy your videos.
One problem I have run across a couple times is a flywheel that WILL NOT come off and has no pulling holes. Three point pulling linkage would not do it either. I ended up heating the hub red hot and it came off in loud groans and pops. The key was just fine. I have broken a flywheel in the past. Lots of videos of them coming right off with a tap. Any suggestions for the future. Thought about building some custom rear multiple point wedge.

When I was rebuilding my 12 hp briggs carb for some reason the new low speed adjustment screw would not screw in to my carburetor so I had to fix my old one with emery paper because it had been over tightened and hashed over and bent, it's still bent but the engine runs great so I do not think scratches will do anything to the needles. As with all your videos Dony, you do a thorough and comprehensive job of explaining the ins and outs of the items you're working on. There was one step that I noticed was missing though. Leveling the float using a flat surface and placing the top carb body on the flat surface and adjusting the float so that it's perpendicular to the level surface. I've failed to do this in the past and had a float that wouldn't shut the fuel supply off before the fuel spilled out of the gasket. Just a thought!

Have been a DIY for these beasts… for 20-25 yrs. I’m usually working by native witlessness and stupidity. No excuse now. Beyond fine Emory or wet-dry sand paper, like others note, copper wire to clean jet ports. I also might use a Dremmel with brass wire wheel on bad crud/ corrosion to revive small brass and pot metal. Excellent presentation, too. Thanks Heaps.

Don, I just worked on the exact same carburetor. Instead of running like a new engine, mine leaked fuel as if I owned stock in BP. I've determined the body is warped, so I'm going to take the carburetor back off, disassemble it, and surface it on a granite block with emery paper. Your shop must have good vibes, 'cause it sure seems to have better luck with ancient engines than my shop does. BTW, my main needle jet has become one with the carburetor body, and I've had it soaking in penetrating oil for three days, but it's decided it doesn't want to part company. That makes working on it a lot more interesting!

    • @johncook2763
      @johncook2763 5 років тому

try using a propane torch for a few seconds to slightly heat the carburetor body near the main needle. Wear leather welder's glove to hold the hot carburetor while you back out the long jet. If you get it too hot, you may need to replace gaskets, but this is easier than drilling out the long needle jet as the Briggs shop manual suggests. When you put the long needle jet back in, tighten until it seats, then back it out and reseat it 4 times or so. This may eliminate the leakage, as it will mate the brass needle to the carburetor body. There are two shoulders on the long needle that must have complete contact with the body or you will have leakage.

Thanks for making this video - I love it. I just bought a used Troy-bilt Horse tiller with this engine (electric start), and it runs poorly - runs fine for about 60 seconds under load, then runs rough for a bit and cuts out. After sitting a minute, it starts, bangs out some black smoke, and goes back to running smooth for a minute, then repeats the whole sequence. Seems to be a fuel problem, and adjusting the mixture didn't fix it. Maybe I need to clean the carb?

Don boy, I have the same engine off a toro snowblower and tried to clean the carb like you showed in this video, your videos are great. A few questions, how far in does that long needle need to go? What gap should the spark plug be at, when I checked it it was at .20 which seems low. I tried cleaning the tank with white vinegar, any other suggestions? Are these engines really worth anything?

Thanks donyboy73. Excellent vid. Those lawmboy snowblowers were rebadged Gilson Unitrol machines. I have the same one but a Gilson from 1979. It's a beast! Mine is leaking fuel by the bowl so I bought a carb rebuild kit. Same 8hp Briggs motor. On mine the governor seems to be not working? It runs very fast without load? Is the gov under the starter housing?

Do you have a carb kit part # for that. I've noticed that the long jet you unscrewed is different on some of those carbs. Some have the single hole in the center of the tube and some have 2 holes on the long jet. Does it really matter?

Do you straighten crank shafts?I have a small shop and seem to be getting a lot of mowers with bent shafts. Is it a big liability?I'm a retired welder and know of a few ways to test for fractures or cracks with dye pen or mag particle. What are your thoughts. Thanks

Where do you find "factory settings" for all the adjustment screws on the carberator? I haven't developed an ear for fine-tuning the engine yet.

  • @ScienceguyOrg

I just rebuilt a carb that looks like that one but in a 8 hp Briggs on a generator. The motor barely runs and it is leaking gas from the bottom of the carburator. I looked at the bottom screw which you said was 7/16" and my screw is hollow through the center. There are no threads through the center. Is this the wrong screw or is something suppose to be pushed through it?

Dony not sure if my response went through. I'm cleaning a gillett generater with the same carb.
it looks like the idle screw has a blunt end. i looked in the recess and I think the end broke off and is stuck in the end. Is the back end of the idle recess supposed to have a hole for the narrow end of the idle screw. I am about to drill the broken end out if it does

Hey there - I have a Toro 826 (Model 38150 from 1979) recently did some repair to the carb (which is the same as this one) and it's working better, but or some reason the throttle control is no longer working. Something got bent or popped in the area where the linkage touches down) I'm not sure if the pieces aren't lining up correctly or what might be happening. Would it be possible to get some images of what a FUNCTIONING throttle control looks like to help diagnose what the heck is wrong?

I have got an engine like this and cannot get it to run, I cleaned the gas out of the crank case and did a complete valve job on it along with a new carburetor Check the piston and rings and they looked good as well. When it does try to start seems like it is blowing air out the intake instead of sucking it in. Any help would be appreciated.
