Honestly I just wanna say I greatly appreciate you opening with "Make what you want. Don't minmax." A lot of these break down videos from other creators make it feel like you HAVE to make the best of the best.
no, but min max builds are the best objective in terms of gameplay efficiency/effectiveness. some people just want to blindly go in and experiment (which is totally fine) and some just want to know the best combos to make the game more enjoyable for them.
special mounts from your race traits also give mounts to units that would normally not be mounted. For example the tier 3 shield unit of the industrial culture.
As a follow up, all of the T3 units get a mount if you choose the mount race trait. Industrious probably gets the most out of this because their T3 is a melee unit. Feudal and Dark don't get as big of a bonus because their T3 are already mounted. Barbarian is an archer and Mysti and High are casters. The way I see it, this perk is one that buffs your T3s with +10 HP along with other bonuses at the expense of forgoing bonuses for the rest of your T1 and T2 units.
@@billalberkerky7069 Actually, ranged units getting mounts can be extremely useful, especially if you pick animal kinship with nature tome. They become beefy powerhouses that even if they get picked off, they won't die.
Tbh a lot of my initial factions are gonna be based on Warcraft and warhammer haha. Make Arthas initially as a good feudal or high faction and start taking evil tomes, infuse with ice, transform into undead overtime 😁
My first faction was going to be the horde. I failed completely to make the faction feel like that. I had no clue about my choices and so I went for the barbarian nature + chaos bonusses... well... once I discovered they turn into demons later I kinda realised that I missed the whole point. I mean... the Horde was all about not being demons anymore. I then started looking into the different trees and tbh I haven't figured out how I would build my race(s) to become the horde. Any ideas?
@ChRW123 Creating a faction requires a bit of creative licensing on your part. It helps if you’re playing on an easier difficulty and turn off the research victory, that way you can’t win by rushing t5 tomes and instead can take a look at each set of tomes, one tier at a time, and find two that represent your faction best in your own opinion. They don’t have to be from the same affinity. If there are more than two in a tier, you can take them (unless you want to rush research victory condition). Creating “the horde” from WoW is impossible because there are no tools (and never will be in any game). Creating the blood elves (high or mystic culture with arcane tomes high priority, some order tomes (zeal and supremacy to represent their arrogance and better than you attitude), and a couple of tomes that fit best from ANY affinity in your opinion) is possible. Creating the undead, obviously shadow primary mixed with poison (nature tome of roots pretend thrall is a zombie with fungus or whatever) and a couple of others (arcane, materium work the best) also possible. Creating both factions at the same time however is nonsensical, focus on only one. Trolls take orcs, bump down physique increase arm and leg length, make blue take more nature, rename etc. Tauren would be the most difficult I guess moles are the closest. The system is better when you have an idea and are making decisions to best fit that idea and justifying it (ie awakened tools are ghosts moving tools if you’re playing the undead, warbreed is an abomination, etc). Different people will have different ideas but in your game your ideas are the most important. Just because there is a “tome of the horde” does not mean that your “horde” faction has to prioritise chaos or even take that tome to begin with. Just approximate the faction you are making and creatively interpret the choices that you make.
I noticed when I started, there was no wild elf faction, so I started a barbarian elf faction, pretty generic start, but when I got the minor animal transformation, man I was blown away by how fun it was to run everything!
I 100% agree with your opening. I created basically all factions from total war warhammer already and have them saved to add to the game, I love this first moment with a game where there's time to experience and discover stuff.
@@insaeculasaeculorum Barbarians get mounted archer Tier 2, Material get their T3 Shield unit mounted making them absolutely devastating, Mystic, order and shadow get their T3 casters on mounts (and with 10 hp for each)
My first faction (for the 2 AI "tutorial" map) was a Roman Empire inspired Industrious, clad-in-gold Zealot faction. Currently I am doing a full 8 player game where I went for a sort of Drukhari/Chaos/Debauchery elf Barbarian society, going full chaos and transforming to demons and it's been a blast steamrolling the world. For my next run I want to focus on magic more, probably going for a Dark Shadow/Astral build (though maybe without undead, as Wightborn units looks way too hideous for my sense of video-game-fashion). Afterwards probably some Mystic build, not sure yet but Mystics seem really interesting mechanic- and aethetic-wise. But Feudal and High are also cool... well I guess I will be playing this game for a while. :P
I just picked this game up on my PS5. Coming of Civ 6 this game is very different than what I know. This helped me understand more of the game. The encyclopedia just gave me more questions than understanding lol.
Underground Factions are really OP for a Magic Victory. You can just focus on conquering the underworld and turn it into a ridiculous fortress by creating vassals on the surface. It's a great way to have fun on an island map with a huge underworld, im really enjoying it. You can use nature magic to create mushroom forests and combo that with leafskin so you get camouflage and then you can use the wrath of nature tome to turn them into units when your defending the final spell. Another thing to realize is that the mount traits will change a unit that is normally unmounted and mount them. It's usually the best unit in tier 3 too, so it can be worth it - like if you use mystics on unicorns, the boss t3 battlemage gets a unicorn, and with a unicorn you can just go pure battlemage because they can warp away if they get pinned. High gets a battlemage too, and barbs get mounted archers so you can go all ghengis khan if you want. The mounts are pretty good traits they can be gamechangers if you want to focus on the units they affect.
I only spent about 2 hours playing, but I LOVE the combination of Bulwark, Defensive Tactics, and Feudal culture. Moving a brick of Peasant Pikemen or Defenders armed to the teeth with Enchantment spells backed up by a Bannerman and grinding my opponents down is just perfect gameplay. Slow, but my God does it feel hilarious to sit there and tank everything game has to throw at me. And then I went up against an AI that used AoE spells and lost two full stacks. Feelsbadman
@Leonardo Henrique Crubellatti No, enemy spells have to go through Resistance like everything else - but that chip damage added up more quickly then I anticipated

Switch out scouts for spider tyrant knights later on. Only pickup heroes riding spiders. It's super broken. Go nature / order for it. Maybe a little bit of astral if you want. You don't need to go for the heals with this build. Just go straight damage wherever you can.
Thanks. Great video. I've been going down Barbarian play-style with animals and loving the opening control and spread at the start, becoming too big to handle toward the end when other factions catch up and are rightfully more powerful, but were forcibly stunted all game. Problem is, I really wanted to try something else but didn't want to start from square one and try everything out. This video gives excellent insights into all that so I'm trying a couple of completely different factions now. If I don't like them much, I'll know it's just because the play-style doesn't suit me, not because I'm missing something critically obvious in the build. Also never thought to check the encyclopedia. I forget Paradox ones are actually really useful and straightforward like a wiki, instead of being full of lore and annoying to navigate like many other games.

I wish there was a point system for the traits - it doesn't have to be complex, just 2 (for extremely strong), 1 (normal) & -1 (negative trait) is enough (for a total of 2 points for your species). It could even be a 3 tier for each trait, so you can tinker with these without having to create new traits (if that's the constrain). With that, I can create a so-so race, a brute race, or the fragile race of mage and scholar if I wish.

My thoughts exactly. In Crusader Kings 3 it is very extensive and it doesn't have to be that detailed in AoW4, but it would be nice if there was a way of having more combinations or if we don't, at least have racial traits that make each race a bit more unique (for example innate cave dweller trait for the mole people). We'll see when they expand the current systems.
If you _do_ wanna minmax: Tier 1: Artificing & Roots (buffs) Tier 2: Glade & Amplification (archers) Tier 3: Devastation (big dude)& Teleportation (early teleporters) Tier 4: NATURE NATURE Tier 5: Nature The plant transformation is OP as heck, especially with the endgame tome that lets you resurrect plants. Which your people are, by that point.
Swarm of starving frogmen will devour all. The kind queen-mother rat will defend all. The men of blood will enslave all. The wild elves of underground will frighten all. The orcish forges will inspire all. And The Doublefaced King will know all.
My go to first race was feudal wolf lords of the forest that got extra flanking damage. You just stack all the damage bonuses. A lot of nature stuff buffs animals AND cavalry. Would like to point out there are debuffs that make enemies flanked. It's not reliant on positioning.

At first I wanted some technocracy faction. But later, when I started fielding armies of summoned golems, I suddenly realized I created a Trade Federation. Well... Time to invade Naboo, I guess
I like taking Herbivore. Then in battle, I eat a Tree DOTA style and get HP. I like taking Cannibalism. Then in battle, I eat the dead Hannibal style and get HP. This is what they mean by a 'Well-Balanced Diet'.
What would you do to optimise spear units? I have an idea for a bunch of rats led by a cat King. Definitely pick up swarming for smaller rats but what other traits would you recommend to stack spear bonuses and retaliation damage?
Ferocious for sure but I like overwhelm tactics here maybe.. I'm not in front of my computer but feel free to join the discord and direct message me. I'll try and look this up when I get home
@ItalianSpartacus Thanks! I'm a bit in the fence about getting it right now but I can't stop thinking up ideas. I saw that Order gets a mid-game cav unit that reduces moral harshly, so might I also recommend Nightmares, Desert Preference, Imperialist, Raiders, and feudal for the ultimate Genghis Khan run?
I think I have a problem with power gaming. I always need to use the absolute strongest builds possible and feel like I'm having less fun if I'm not using the best possible builds
That's definitely not a problem. You're competitive and like the feeling of being extremely strong. Your fun comes from your power. It also may be extremely frustrating for you whenever you lose battles, IF you lose them.
What I really hate is that many society traits are nonsensically mutually exclusive. If you take any +Alignment, it'll lock you out of most (all?) -Alignment traits, denying you the possibility of eclectic cultures or to balance good and evil. For example, there's no thematic or mechanical reason I should not be able to run Devotees of Good and Ritual Cannibalism together, even if such a choice would seem counter-intuitive to smoothbrains at first glance. By far the most egregious, though, has to be the Ancient Wise Ones being mutually exclusive to Shadow Walkers. No sense at all. I also wish we could get two Body traits and two Mind traits. I feel like it's impossible to even make basic things like Dark Elves while still making them "elves", as Underground and Spiders would take both their traits.
You can always offset with the tomes and their bonuses. I think 1 body trait and 1 mind trait is fine, especially because there is not a lot to go for. For the game design it is definitely the correct way, keeping it like that. But for fun purposes... well, the game is very flexible and moddable for a reason ;)

Hey Spartacus thank you very much helped me very much to get the core features of the race building. Do you think this game is comparable in difficulty to CIv 5 or is it more like CK3 where lots of random stuff can happen and wreck you if you dont watch out?
Age of wonders planetfall (the previous title) was very playable for a 4x title on console. Generally speaking if you have a good enough PC to run it you should just play it on PC.
I don't know yet if this is just in my head or if it's true (i haven't played without tenacious yet) i used it with the unit transformation spell from the time of the horde on my goblins and if this is like tw Warhammer than tenacious really counteracts the higher model count and give me such constant damage. I'm in my second campaign so it's s bit too early to call it op but it feels really strong so far.
Hello Italianspartakus great video, any chance to make one about province improvements ? I tend to start a game, and when well into it I have all these special province improvements I can make but they are hard to use, lets say I have to place an improvement down and have to choose do I destroy one of my mines, or a forester/food etc, then I want to build a money guild in my city and I cant because I dont have 2/2 mines any more, thats just an example. Also there are some special province improvements that give lets say mana , and they give extra per conduit next to that province, but tbh I hardly ever get more than 2 conduit provinces next to each other... so it seems to me these province improvements are really hard to impliment well into your lands ? or am I wrong ? whats the best way to plan these provinces , and lets say late game do I just destroy all my food production and put down special provinces ??
Can i have a question ? When we create physical traits & mind traits for own factoon, our summon units or units from tomes will be inherited the traits or not ?
I know this is unrelated to the video, but if anyone can tell me how claims and distant claims work I’d very much appreciate it. Like say I find an ancient wonder far away from my opponent, how come we both might have a claim on it? It’s just from discovery? How do you get a claim on something? I understand if it’s close to one of your cities, I get that part. But distant claims really confuse me.
Sir, I have a question, when you select a mount racial some of your units get a mount in the race creation model, is this reflected in game or is it just to display more mounts during the race creation? The units that display this change are ranged units for Barbarian, mages for Mystic and High, and the shield infantry for Industrious; Feudal and Dark already have a mounted unit so they don't seem to change.
@@italianspartacus I do not get the reference :( I am trying to learn the ropes of the game. Does this bonus extend to units that you learn from tomes?

Yes! So you'll want to reload the save prior to doing the transformation. Go to cast the spell, but before applying, look at the top of the menu. You'll see a check mark. Uncheck that :)
@@italianspartacus wow much thx for that fast answer this game was only in the tutorial mission so its already in the pantheon but will uncheck that mark in my next round ^^

Does anyone know for certain if you’re body and mind Traits apply to the wizard king if you pick a different form or not because the game doesn’t make it very clear.but from what it looks like I don’t think it does
It does apply, but just bear in mind that when you use Race Transformations, you can choose to not apply them to your Wizard King. Lorewise it makes sense, but at a gameplay perspective, you'll lose a lot of bonuses for no reason.
the naming of the race at the botton seem to be the weakspot in this game, i mean sure you can make a better faction name but the one the ai makes are going to be immersion breaking fast :I

My favorite faction idea so far... Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, THUNDERCATS, HO!
Thanks for the video
0.00 skeletor before he lost his hair from post he-man stress disorder (PHSD) also it seems Skeletor was scarier in his prime as he can shoot red death from his eyes lol.
This is a great video. Thank you!
I can play a race of MOLES????
Instant sell for me :)
Thank goodness I'm sitting here staring at the character creation screen with no idea what the hell's going on
Hey Spartacus, is there any chance you'll copy your streams to youtube as well as twitch? 😊
I was wrecked by a lev 19 hero using blink and multi attack. He also had a hammer that did AOE damage. I was like WTF. Curios how the AI is able to level their heroes so freaking fast.
Almost there to play myself :)
I'll be streaming tomorrow from 10:00am to 2pm PST. Stop by and lets workshop it, just say you're Bryce from YT :) www.twitch.tv/italianspartacus
great video thank you
I think I have a problem with power gaming. I always need to use the absolute strongest builds possible and feel like I'm having less fun if I'm not using the best possible builds
But you don't know if its the most powerful is the joke.
That's not a problem that's just a playstyle.
Because it sucks knowing you can't be the best
Me: Overwhelm Tactics, Strong, Feudal Goblin Archer Tome of the Horde, Prolific Swarmer, Fabled Hunters, taking Persians quote our arrows will block out the sun during battle of Thermopylae Literally
41:05 Minor Transformations have upkeep? I thought it was just a heavy initial cast. Heck, I didn't know you could even turn them off.
Hey Spartacus thank you very much helped me very much to get the core features of the race building.
Do you think this game is comparable in difficulty to CIv 5 or is it more like CK3 where lots of random stuff can happen and wreck you if you dont watch out?
As a first time 4x player, do these types of games play better on console or pc?
Much better on PC. The difference is night and day, especially when the modding community gets their hands on it.
Age of wonders planetfall (the previous title) was very playable for a 4x title on console. Generally speaking if you have a good enough PC to run it you should just play it on PC.
How open Wizard King in Champion section? Just apear for me Champion.
Could you share your build for your vampire race?
Video going up now :)
Can you have more than one major transformation at once?
No! Unfortunately not, minor on the other hand is unlimited
@italianspartacus
Does the Body & Mind Traits affect your Hero as well..?
Hello Italianspartakus great video,
any chance to make one about province improvements ?
Yes! As long as the summoned unit is your race! Example an elemental wouldn't share them but a tyrant knight would
I know this is unrelated to the video, but if anyone can tell me how claims and distant claims work I’d very much appreciate it. Like say I find an ancient wonder far away from my opponent, how come we both might have a claim on it? It’s just from discovery? How do you get a claim on something? I understand if it’s close to one of your cities, I get that part. But distant claims really confuse me.
aussie shepherds do be eating toys
After creating my own faction , the summon unit from time also follow the traits of my own factions ? Please help me to answer .
Yes!! And it even adds mounts to units that wouldn't have one :) take a look at Hugh for example
@@italianspartacus I do not get the reference :( I am trying to learn the ropes of the game. Does this bonus extend to units that you learn from tomes?
@@Silverhand404 They don't! Only to the faction's original units.
I just want to share that i made a race of barbarian spawnkin rats ruled by a human girl called Alyssa, the rats are called Alyssa's Lovers and she is their Matriarch, and yes, Alyssa's goal is to make everyone become her zealous lover(tome of zeal included).
God i love the customization.
i wish it was a bit more clear what is good or not. Im not a 4x player and bought the game, it is very hard for me to get a grasp on things
Try using the default empires for a few playthrus and you'll get the mechanics down. No point in customizing before then.
it sucks that there is no undead race... I want to have a skeletal faction. It was my favorite in age of wonders 1
There's undead transformation. You can't start as a skeleton, but you can turn your people into them later.
hi one quick question. i was jsut doing my first playthrough and my rp thing with this was playing an evil wizartd king that exploits my faction and late turn tham undead. but the problem was that after unlocking the undead transformation the body of my charakter turned undead too is there a way to only transform your faction but not the ruler ?
@@Raving94 Just keep in mind that your Wizard King will also not benefit from the bonuses. Unless they patched that.
got a question, so I built a army up, went dark ok? so i wanted a whole undead legion where when ever I lost a unit bam zombies which i was doing, was amazing, then I got through the tomes and found one that said it turns my race into undead unites. ok sweet spawned more necromancers, but there strengthen undead buff can't be used on any of my unites but zombies or skellys, but according to the tomb all of my unites are suppose to be undead, was this just a bug, or no?
Must be a bug.
My mans is very insistent about Skaven it seems
Not that I blame him. it was the first thing I thought about too immediately when I saw the character creator had rodents~
Can you make mummies?
But is AoW4 better than planet fall and AoW3?
i made diplomatic orc necromancers
Does anyone know for certain if you’re body and mind Traits apply to the wizard king if you pick a different form or not because the game doesn’t make it very clear.but from what it looks like I don’t think it does
It does :) you're creating YOUR FACTION vs YOUR RACE if that helps. My vlad Dracula character is a wizard king!
It does apply, but just bear in mind that when you use Race Transformations, you can choose to not apply them to your Wizard King. Lorewise it makes sense, but at a gameplay perspective, you'll lose a lot of bonuses for no reason.
Had hopped there would be console keys to, but hey, can't be lucky everytime
Sorry man :( I wish I knew them. I usually only get sent PC keys so I never get a chance to fill in that blank
Anyone know the limit/cap for number of factions I can create?
Battle toads. Mic drop.
i wuld like to have culture that combine mystick and nature [like feudal and barabaran have 1 and 1] that pobly will be dlc ;[
14:00 and i was hope to see that what thay have exaly ;[
not have game yeat, wnat to see more ;[
'I don't not saying that...'
wat
the naming of the race at the botton seem to be the weakspot in this game, i mean sure you can make a better faction name but the one the ai makes are going to be immersion breaking fast :I
cannabalism is vampires? Okay pal.
bratan! it was the only choice!! there's no other way to make them unfortunately :(
Ratboys
0:49 you lost me. i was here for a "best/strongest faction build" guess this is not a video for me
Itching to play the game.
However, I went ahead an tried to help @italianspartacus and buy the game through nexus, and they haven't given me any key or replied to my help request yet, the game already has launched, I had yesterday and today of leave days from work, expected to play this, but seems I am screwed now. Not gonna happen again buying with this nexus, just a shot in the foot.
Can you give me more context on this my dude?? I'll find out what the deal is. I've been using this service for three years and this is the first complaint I've seen
@@italianspartacus They answered me "There was an error with our supplier, and our keys are currently out of stock." They offered for a refund. I asked when was their estimated arrival time for more keys, they said yesterday... but nothing still. Now I am working again so... I imagine if I refund I lose the pre-order goodies, that's why I was willing to wait the day but am just not sure, might ask a refund soon.
I know it's not your fault mate, but I imagine others have the same problem but just didn't compain.
Cheers.
