For the first time this species was described by Charles Linnaeus in 1753 as Agaricus muscarius, in 1783 Jean-Baptiste Lamarck transferred it to the genus Amanita giving it its present name. It was described by various researchers under different names, so now it has over 40 scientific synonyms
