I played this for 5000 sailors while a radio dj on my aircraft carrier in 1979. This brought years to my eyes for the memory. I went up onto the upper deck to get a cup of coffee and could hear the song blaring throughout. Didn't think anyone was listening. Four days, the Skipper called the station and requested it. In the middle of the Indian Ocean no less. THANK YOU.
This is the stuff of which guitar heroes are made. I was lucky to see Schenker perform this in a small club when he was getting his career back together a few years ago. Great player.
Phil Mogg just had a career ending heart attack. Much love to one of my favorite bands since 1977. I was 14 in ‘77. Mention Pete Way ffs. I was at the “Lights Out in Chicago!” show. I’ve seen them 8x.
I would argue the greatest live guitar solo of all time. Much of that was improvised. I’ve seen Michael Schenker several times. The man was/is amazing!!! He’s the reason I bought my first guitar.
Hi Rich and Kel, wanted to thank you for doing the UFO reactios . I'm a 57 year old man and I haven't heard that album in God only knows how long . It immediately brought on a flood of excellent memories. I had to listen to the whole album . Thank you so much for this one almost forgotten gem.

Andy Parker, Pete Way and Paul Raymond don't get enough credit.... Nor does Phil.... After all, he did what every one else wanted to do.... He punched that spoiled brat Schenker in the face.... And Schenker ran to his brother.... And Rudy took him back.... And Mikey handily fucked his brother over on the verge of the first major US tour.... What a guy.
Funny how things seemed to work out just fine with the Scorpions while Michael only had modest success with his own outfits . Proof that all the parts need to work together to really be a success.

Lights out, Obsession, and Strangers are all killer albums from this overlooked band. 8:48 Schenkers guitar starts to sound like it wants to explode and then when you think its reached the crescendo, he shifts into an even higher gear. His playing is mindblowing on this entire album.
Probably seen ufo about 20 odd times , all way through the years , never made it to the status they deserved amongst British bands , for me one of the best ever ❤
It doesn’t get any better than that. That’s just hours of phenomenal musicianship there. You must have thought you died and went to heaven. I bet you cried when the show was over. I probably would have.
A massive shout out for the great Phil Mogg . First saw UFO at the Knebworth Fayre 1985 on the same bill as Alaska, Mountain , Mamas Boys , Blackfoot , Meatloaf , Scorpions and Deep Purple.
Saw them in 1979 for Strangers Tour and forty years later just two weeks before we lost Paul Raymond. They were still as good with Phil Mogg, Andy Parker and Paul Raymond killing it! Rock Bottom still brought the house down!
College buddy's brother was sharing a joint with the drummer during this concert. UFO is one of those bands that sounded better live than in the studio.
My goodness! Another classic UFO tune! Love it and thank you for rejuvenating my old carcass. Rock on! I first discovered them via Columbia House Record Club when I was in High School in the late 1970's. It was either 'Lights Out' (I think 'Lights Out') or 'Obsession' that I first bought & heard of theirs and have been hooked since. Much love!
I remember seeing them in the mid-70s when they played at the keel Opera House in St Louis only 3,000 people one of the pas was giving Phil trouble so he threw it off the stage and smashed it
Pete Way ( Bass player ) is gone as well. I saw them in NYC at the Palladium ( 1979-80 ) 'No Place To Run Tour after a friend gave me a 8 -track from the album OBSESSION. My life was changed forever. I'm 63 and still listen to them at least twice a week. Only YOU can Rock me Rock Me.
I saw this UFO Line up about a few months prior to this 1978 recording..........in October 1977. It was a 3 Band show at the Houston Music Hall: Max Webster, UFO, and RUSH. UFO was the 2nd act but was by far the Loudest and "ruled" the evening. Being there prompted me to eventually purchase the "Remastered" Strangers in the Night CD. 1977-78 was a big 2 year run for UFO and this band lineup was in my mind the "Classic" lineup.....or as good as it gets. You all did not waste your time reacting this and I would like to see more reactions from this CD.
Schenker on steroids! A masterpiece. Though sadly this was the reason he left the band cos he was unhappy with the mix and wanted to overdub it. Sounds pretty awesome to me!
I seen UFO in the late 70's and the whole concert people were yelling Rock Bottom. Especially during the new material of whichever album that was released.
Ah… You did do this version of "Rock Bottom”. This is probably one of the best guitar solos ever recorded, especially this version. Michael ad libs a lot of the parts to this solo and rarely plays it the same way twice and of all of the versions I have ever heard him record of this song, this one is still his masterpiece as far as I’m concerned. This is one of the few guitar solos that runs on for minutes that I could never get bored listening too. Often times guitarists run out of tricks rarely quickly and begin repeating the same thing, but every phrase Michael plays in this solos is unique and have its own feeling. I think this is the most expressive solo have ever hear, not just some guy trying to show how fast he can play sets of triplets (think the eternal solos in Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The same triplets over and over for like 6 minutes). Michael can play as fast as any other guitarist, but he prefers to go for mood by expressing what he is feeling at the time and he was really on point the night this was recorded. The communication of feeling is what true art is all about. If the artist does not transfer his feelings to the audience, telling a story, then it is not art. This solo is pure art. A masterpiece of guitar. I am impressed to see that Kel can appreciate real art. Any woman who can identify real art, whether music, literature or the visual arts, is quite a catch for any man I am very lucky to also be married to a woman who knows art when she sees, hears or just experiences it. This is important to me since I am an artist and musician, so art is my life. It’s a bit sad that Kel wasn’t introduced to such art as this. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and of course the true artistry of Rush, but it is better than never being introduced to such great works of rock. There are many people who do not believe that any rock music is art, but they have clearly never heard work like this solo. Micheal Schenker is a legendary guitarist and rarely gets the credit he deserves. Keep on introducing Kel to these brilliant works of art, so she can add these pieces to her already rounded knowledge of beautiful creations in this world. I have seen that Kel enjoys Rush, she would really enjoy the song “Mission”, which is on their “Hold Your Fire” LP. The song is a celebration of the masterful works of art in this world, whether through music, literature, architecture and even the cinematic arts. Dig a bit deeper into the lyrics and it tells the story of the passion that drives the artist to create such works and eventually compares it more of a curse, because it seem that they were born to do a particular thing and are unable to ignore the call and often spend their life trying to achieve bringing it to the people, no matter the cost (basically the “starving artist” curse, which is actually true in more cases than not), at least this is what I get from the verse that says: “It’s cold comfort, to the ones without it (the talent) to know how they struggled, how they suffered about it”. I love the following line: “If their lives were exotic and strange (the non-artist), they would likely have gladly exchanged them for something a little more plain, maybe something a little more sane”. I hope you get a chance to let Kel react to it. Thanks for doing this version of Rock Bottom. I loved seeing her reaction to Michael’s guitar solo hearing it for the first time.
Paul Raymond's death means that they'll probably call it a day. Great band, that never got the success it deserved. One of the all-time great bands, and Schenker's playing is sublime, and I love Phil's voice. Great t-shirt again Kel. All the best to you both from Cornwall, UK.
I was reading an article the other day which was an interview with Michael Schenker. He was asked about the fight that him and his brother Rudolph are having. He says that anything he did for the good of Scorpions, Rudolph took credit for. He said I saved Scorpions during The Lonesome Crow album and I never got a thank you from Rudolph for that. Then I left to join UFO. I saved UFO. I was never acknowledged for that. Then I saved Scorpions again when Uli Jon Roth left the band. That was the Lovedrive album. He said, I wrote Another Piece Of Meat, Lovedrive and Coast to Coast and Rudolph took credit for those songs. I don't care , he can claim them. He could have least thanked me for them.
One of the top 3 live rock albums ever recorded . Saw them many times in the 70's and never failed to deliver, just a great band . Sadly Paul Raymond recently passed away
I don't know there Allman Brothers Fillmore East of the great live album I can't pick them I have to pick at least 15 or 20 at least the ones that I have
Gary cool story i too was in the indian ocean in 79 on a fast frigate uss robert e peary, great band saw them in 78 in san diego at jack murphy stadium…opened for black sabbath, still listen to their music to this day…lights out lights out London!!!
How about some Michael Schenker Group? "On and On" & "Desert Song" Michael does a lot of his old UFO and Scorpions stuff as well as his own creations. His guitar playing is epic!!
I found my original copy earlier this year. THis is UFO best album alltough some of the studio albums are good too. This is among top 10 live Rock albums ever made on par with Thin Lizzy but slightly lower than Live at Leeds
I got to see them live twice in 1996 in a little tiny club in Palo Alto CA , out side Stanford U . Same line up as Lights Out , pushing the single Venus. Very Cool show !
Funny fact about this guitar solo: Michael Schenker, ever the perfectionist, was very unhappy with the solo. He demanded to re-record it in the studio but the producer, Ron Nevison, rightly refused him the chance to do it. The solo was perfect to everyone else but Schenker!
Actually the band wanted Michael to do some overdubs in the studio on the album and he refused to because it would take away from the authenticity of his live performance. That is why he left the band.
See?? Much better than the studio version! ;) Thank you for sharing!! Make sure you check out the Paul “Tonka” Chapman era that followed Strangers. No Place To Run, The Wild The Willing and The Innocent, Mechanix, and Making Contact.
Last official U F O gig with original line-up, Maples Pavilion, Stanford University, Palo Alto, Ca. Ii was a glorious moment to behold. It is recorded for posterity. Love to love you all. James V.
Thanks for yet another amazing reaction. Always loving the pure and real emotions and the way you two love birds really are showing us. Few days ago I requested a song, but since the band has an exclamation mark in their the band name the hashtag werent properly written. So i'll try another time and write it out and hope it works without the (!) this time. The song I would like to witness you guys react to is the song "Sleep" by #GodspeedYouBlackEmperor (Godspeed You! Black Emperor). The band itself has had an extremely huge impact on me. Firstly i've always been a huge die hard post-rock fan. Secondly many of my greatest emotional music experiences I have them to thank. And as I mentioned in my previous comment, thirdly - this particular song is a rightous human masterpiece and basically a true rollercoaster of emotions. Hopefully you'll get to enjoy it as much as I did. With best regards Brian 27, Army Ranger. Sweden.
As other people have stated, you should also react to songs from Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous. Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous is along with UFO - Strangers In The Night, one of the best live rock albums of all time (though some of it was re-recorded in the studio)
Michael Schenker is a great guitarist.... but he's not even the best guitarist ever in Scorpions.... That is the one and only Uli Jon Roth.... Sorry to break it to you.
@@kevinheath716 sorry to break it to you but you didn't break anything to me. I know how good a Ulrich Roth is. I have every album that he did with Scorpion's. After he left Scorpion's they sucked real bad. He's a badass guitar player. But I think Michael Schenker is the best guitar player in the world....PERIOD.... so there
@@sammybeck7794 fair enough... but I seriously disagree. 1st, Scorpions were still good. I did like them better before but they were still great. 2nd... I don't think he's better than Roth but we do share a love of Schenker's sound... so there's that. 3rd... Mathias doesn't get enough credit. Hrs not technically on par with the other 2 but he's been the guy they needed and a damned good guitarist in his own right. And he was always reliable. I guess my problem with Schenker is that he was always more disappointing than any other guitarist and he always blames everyone else.... Even Eddie Van Halen found a way to finish his tours and show up for work.... But they're very similar otherwise.
You missed them, like 99% of the musical world did. I was introduced in 1979 by my brothers. God bless them; they were at the Chicago night for the Strangers in the Night Tour. They are criminally unknown and underappreciated.

Funny fact about this guitar solo: Michael Schenker, ever the perfectionist, was very unhappy with the solo. He demanded to re-record it in the studio but the producer, Ron Nevison, rightly refused him the chance to do it. The solo was perfect to everyone else but Schenker!
Je did better since. Still this is amazing.
Actually the band wanted Michael to do some overdubs in the studio on the album and he refused to because it would take away from the authenticity of his live performance. That is why he left the band.
@@stevenewcomer8837 Wrong! Michael left because of one person.... Phil Mogg.
@@rainerpawellek1292 Point me to it, because I've never heard it!
From the same album; the versions of 'Natural Thing' and 'Out In The Street'. Some of the greatest guitar solos and TONE you will *ever* hear...
I lived and breathed Michael Schenker as a teenager and still to this day!! Great video!
Into the arena by Michael Schenker Group?
See?? Much better than the studio version! ;) Thank you for sharing!! Make sure you check out the Paul “Tonka” Chapman era that followed Strangers. No Place To Run, The Wild The Willing and The Innocent, Mechanix, and Making Contact.
That’s right! Rich! Gonna spread your ears Wide OPEN!
Man..this is one awesome song...the way its sung kinda reminds me of the singer from April wine
Ya everybody says it but I was at the old Chicago Stadium for this show. Hands down one of the best live albums to come out of the 70’s.
Last official U F O gig with original line-up, Maples Pavilion, Stanford University, Palo Alto, Ca. Ii was a glorious moment to behold. It is recorded for posterity. Love to love you all. James V.
UFO Killed it with Schenker in the 70's they put on super shows. Try the M S G 1 album it Is awesome !
Fantastic! Schenker Guitar God!!
Just do the whole live album, one song at a time. It’s that good
Thanks for yet another amazing reaction.
With best regards
Brian 27, Army Ranger. Sweden.
As other people have stated, you should also react to songs from Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous.
Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous is along with UFO - Strangers In The Night, one of the best live rock albums of all time (though some of it was re-recorded in the studio)
Phenomenal!
Kel and rich I lost you guys for a minute, glad I got you back
Dino!!!!!
💪🏽👊❤️
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Michael Schenker is the best guitarist in the world
Michael Schenker is a great guitarist.... but he's not even the best guitarist ever in Scorpions....
@@sammybeck7794 Your Wrong P E R I O D....he's Badass none the less
Not even a close second to Criss Oliva.
when you listen to this you need to make sure your neighbours can enjoy it too.
One of the BEST guitar solos of all time
Saw them in '75. When Michael Schenker came out with his flying V we were completely blown away.
You missed them, like 99% of the musical world did. I was introduced in 1979 by my brothers. God bless them; they were at the Chicago night for the Strangers in the Night Tour. They are criminally unknown and underappreciated.
Tr y Grand Funk Railroad -- Heartbreaker -- 1974(live)
Amazing performance! You MUST listen this!
Shut up while Michael's jamming!!
strangers in the night...1978.... this was my first step up to something harder than Kiss and Pink Floyd... I was 11 years old....This riff from Michael Schenker, plus David Gilmour and Randy Rhoads are wholly responsible for me picking up my first guitar in 1981
R.I.P. Paul Raymond!!
The first proper gig I ever went to. Absolutely blew me away! It was around the time they recorded this album. Saw them about 5 or 6 times in all, including the Reading festival. Probably the second best live act ever, after the great Rory Gallagher.
I really wish I was listening to Strangers in the Night for the first time in Nov 2020 , jesus what a find that would be , it's a brilliant album
