@discipleofdagon8195 It wasn't marketed as F2P. It started out as a paid game, then transitioned later in its life to a F2P game.
If someone wants to pay money for cosmetic items in a game they support, free to play or not, then what's wrong with that?

I remember TF2 back on the Orange Box on the 360. The only communication was yelling for Medic, and somehow we all communicated like morse code with it. Little changes like the small drop down at BLU spawn stage 2 and the stairs going up the walkway at stage 3 alley were made to help BLU out to prevent easy spawncamps and break through hold points a little more easily, but more often than not, a good defense still trumps an equally good offense in Dustbowl.

I joined during the prerelease beta, right after they reduced the grenade launcher's clip size from 6 to 4. Lots of differences between stock then and today. Only sentries had upgrade levels. No airblast. Pistols used to be semi-automatic (you can probably blame me for the change to full-auto).
There were a few other differences, but those are the big ones I remember the most. For a little while there wasn't a delay before scoped shots counted as headshots. A couple times they tinkered with the minigun's spinup time and damage vs sentries. Pistol/revolvers didn't shoot straight down the crosshair on the first bullet. I remember them nerfing airbursts with the stickybomb launcher. I'm sure you remember the somewhat-recent afterburn change.
That's all I can remember off the top of my head, but I know for sure there were other changes to stock. 🤔

You playing engineer reminds me of how placing sentry guns/buildables and it not being 'janky' to do so was an INCREDIBLE novelty unto itself. Team Fortress Classic for example, you could only place things one specific way in mostly specific locations because the footprint of the sentry was huge and did not like being near certain kinds of terrain. Because of this in fact, the 'meta' around sentry building was pretty flat and uncomplicated. For the most part you could mostly only place sentries in their 'designated nests' like how snipers had their own bunkers.

So if you ever find someone who has crit heals and is hurt (could definitely happen at like, the front lines of a payload defense round when someone's waiting on a kit to respawn or anything similiar), then it's still better to arrow them in regards to Übercharge building

This has been in effect since Tough Break, while the heal scaling mechanic from the medigun was introduced to the crossbow in Jungle Inferno. So if I understand what you mean, and unless the crossbow's base charge rate was buffed at the same time the Jungle Inferno changes went through, I believe the crossbow both gives less charge than the medigun and is affected by the medigun's scaling mechanic. For me personally, I don't mind all the items being gone.
I already play TF2 with a 2007-2010 asthetic with my game settings and often play with stock weapons only, and even I made a video in my channel during the item servers being down with the settings on and it's extremely comparable to 2007 tf2.
I'm a type of guy that is stuck in the past so I just enjoyed the 2 days of all items being unaccessable.

When I played the game during the item server crash, it made me realize how the well TF2 as a game was designed, how I missed out on he experience of the game expanding with new updates, and how the pace of the game was really different back then. The game is cleverly balanced in a way that is complicated to replicate, and class interactions between the enemies and teammates were more clear. The most interesting observation I found is less people fought in flank and team fights in choke were more popular compared to now where people can run load outs to stay away from the medic and do crazy flanks and bombs. I found myself appreciating this game more after this funny incident.

I started playing in 2008. I remember a MOSTLY stock TF2, when they first added hats I played so long hoping for a random hat drop and finally got my Soldier's Stash (and eventually a Demoman's Fro). It was a fun time; a good balance between complete stock and a secondary option you may not expect, the occasional hat because most people only had a couple and were lucky to get them on a class they played, while nobody had a complete understanding of "proper tactics." Just get out there and have fun, do some stupid shit and play the objective in between.
