New hobby machinist. I've been trying to wrap my head around these. This was the most concise and detailed explanation that a total beginner could understand, Thank you!!!!!
I like that attachment a lot - mine works well but is a pain to attach and set up. Yours is way more useful. So much better not having to release the leadscrew nut. You have a very versatile lathe there.
Hi Chris, The present attachment is quite easy to setup and use, a nice add on for the lathe, this is what I used when making the handles for the machinist hammer, went real easy... Good thing we don't turn tapers everyday, or, we'd be real good a it... lol Cheers, Pierre
Thanks Pierre and Phil. As always excellent presentation Pierre. Well I guess that is enuff Babbling from me.. LOL I always love it when Phil says that. !
That one goes in my "reference" library for future reference. So I can reference it at some future time. In case I need to reference it. Seriously. Thanks, John
Hi John, This reminds me some time ago looking to find good videos or informations about taper attachment on the web, they were kinda rare or not very detailled, hope this is a step up in the right direction... Thanks for viewing and taking some time to comment, Pierre
Hi Pierre, I need to build one for my Atlas and I don't want to disconnect my crossslide nut every time I want to use it. The standard taper attachment for that lathe requires that so I need to design from scratch. The splined shaft is the trick I was looking for. Thanks for this video. John P.S. And the humor.😊
Nice raspberry jam you have spread on the cross-slide of the taper attachment. I built a taper attachment for my Harrison lathe based on ThatOldTony series and it works great, but is not nearly as convenient as yours. Thanks for sharing. Nice.
Hi Jim, Leftover, past due jam, this is where unsafe for consumption food goes around here, machines love old bacon... lol This present taper attachment is real practical and easy to use, it's better when it comes originally supplied and adapted for the machine, just like this one... Thanks for watching and for comment, Pierre
I wish someone would explain how the telescoping lead screw works when not using the taper attachment. What keeps the cross slide from moving while cutting?
This attachment is quite accurate, but as for any work on a manual lathe, the operator counts for a big part of the success, in good conditions the actual set-up with the present machine, it's possible to make quite accurate tapers, as you know the very high precision parts are ground on a cylindrical grinder. You can get very good finish and fit by manually using some polishing techniques involving blueing and corrections, using a decent reference will give you a good tool or part... ;) Thanks for your comment, Pierre
So far, by listening at what you all say, there is one smart dog on Earth, i.e. your own........... Sigh....!!!One of those days, you guys with dogs will have to make some kind of pageant.... lol I'm anxious to see the results after what all of you boys gonna invent in order to win this... BIG Grin...!!! Say woaouf, waoufff...! to Baily, he'll understand... ;)
The kids are raised, the cat is gone, the quiet life...!!!! And, here we got to keep the suroundings clean, so, I'm not a candidate to a "Caca picking contest" with my little glove or shovel... ;) Even a mouse size dog gets to make monster shits... Wonder how they do it...???
I haven't tried it, but that would need a pretty strong one in this case, to be tried in a future situation... ;) Thanks for viewing and for the suggestion, Pierre

Hi Robin,
Thanks for visit...

would this be capable of making accurate morse or jacobs tapers? or are those better by dialing in on an existing taper?

Are the technical words the same in French as English?? Good vid
Not really, a couple words are close a bit, but most are quite different...
Thanks for viewing, Pierre
I wouldn't know if you cussed in French. You guys are a hoot!
You'd know, you just wouldn't understand it. LOL
Right about that, It really sound like someone isn't happy.... lol
Cheers, both of you guys, Pierre
Howie doesn't have a master supervisor certification, you have to get Baily to wag off on the jobs. :-)

I thought it was well known that all pet owners think theirs is the best ever. lol When will you be getting one to compete with? :-)

Baily goes off in the fields and fertilizes I never see it.
That, I already figured it out... lol
Here neighbors don't grow corn meant for Bourbon... :(
Very long, made some easy
Thanks for your comment
6:13, What about a magnet?
I haven't tried it, but that would need a pretty strong one in this case, to be tried in a future situation... ;)

A cheap neodymium would pull that tapered tap out of your hand, so would easily pull that bushing out of that hole.
Got a few of those from hard disk, good chances it works... ;)

Very stout taper attachment.
Yep...!!! Does work great and easy enough to setup... ;)
