Brian, thank you for testing and sharing your recipes. I’ll definitely give this a try. Separately, I’m wondering if you still have and/or use the Ninja Air Fryer. I noted on Chef AJ you said the oven worked best for roasted potatoes. I’ve actually been talking myself out of buying an air fryer for months (not to mention I don’t have any remaining counter space). Dolores
Steel cut oats are oat groats that are roasted, and could be used in place of the oat groats, or use 1 or 2 cups cooked brown rice to make a complete protein (beans and rice).
I made this in the instant pot today and it was very good! I used the sauté mode to cook the onion and garlic first then added all the other ingredients and cooked for 25 minutes. It turned out perfect!
I keep chili in my fridge all the time. Absolutely love it. It's so versatile. I'll use it over potatoes and steamed veggies for a quick meal but love it as a salad dressing, about the same way you use your smokey hummus, just mexican style. As someone else said, I also use bulgur or I'll use farro for that chewiness texture. Definitely gonna try this recipe. Love y'all's vids!
This looks delicious! Doesn't seem weird at all. Cocoa powder is an ingredient in mole and I often use a touch of cocoa powder and/or a splash of strong coffee into my chili. Also, adding grains or something to bulk up your chili is a great idea. Lots of folks I know use a bit of masa to bulk up their chili and thicken it, I usually throw a small handful of TVP into my chili to give it some little chewy bits as well. I'm not familiar with oat groats, but I do have steel cut oats in my pantry basically at all times.
So good!! I made a pot last night but used spelt berries (like whole wheat) because that's all I had but yum yum yum. Super tasty and the cooked whole grain gave a chewy meaty texture.
Great “meaty” chili! I topped it with some leftover cheeze sauce (the one with the butternut squash base...that was in your 4 cheese sauce video). Amazing combo.!
I made this with carob powder. I really like it. I cooked the oat groats separately as I soaked them first and cooked 1c in 1-2/3c. Water. In the instant pot and cooked it for 22 mins NR I sautéed the onion and garlic and used the instant pot again with the other ingredients for 1 min. NR. You are a great cook,THANK-YOU SO MUCH.
Hi there Jessica and Brian! I made your Chili and I agree that it is great tasting. I added a couple of things. I only had one can of Kidney beans, so I used one can of Garbanzo bean, which I love and used in my chili. And I add a Pasilla pepper, diced, which also goes in my chili! The Groats is one thing I'd never heard of! Thanks for you recipes and your Positive thoughts!🌺
Clearly, chili inspires a lot of passion and for GOOD reason. I have organized an "official" chili cook-off where I work since 2006. The varieties and competition is FIERCE among the Chili Chefs. There are 3 winners: 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place each with earning gift card prizes. The first year one of the winners brought a vegetarian chili. The chili was served in a steamed half of acorn squash! Tasty and lovely presentation. We've had more vegetarian and vegan entries since then. Bring it on!!
Iʻm making this chili right now! I'll let you know how it turns out. I just wanted to say that I opened the bag of oat groats and was immediately transported back to the barn on the farm I lived on until I was seven. Such a wonderful smell. I never knew these existed until this video.
I just made this! The addition of the chocolate totally makes this dish. I used whole wheat kernels instead of the oat groats (because that's what I had on hand) and I cooked this dish for over 2 hours so the wheat would cook. Next time, I will try soaking the wheat a bit before using. This is a winner, Brian!!
In areas of Mexico, its common to add chocolate to spicy dishes (mole sauce) and spicy hot peppers to chocolate (hot chocolate). It mellows out the heat and makes the flavors deeper some how. Great combo. Remember this is sugarless baking cocoa, but Ive heard of using the sweetened kind too.
Thank you Brian and Jessica for this recipe! Cant wait to try it! If people have a hard time finding the oat groats look at Natural Grocers store. My store always has them in stock. 😊
We made this yesterday. Was wonderful. We switched everything over to a crock pot and cooked it until the groats tenderized. We might experiment with additional spices next time but that's always personal preference anyway.
I saw the video and had to make it today, it was great! The only change was I used barley groats since no one had oat. I also don't use can products often so made it from dry beans and fresh tomatoes.
Oat groats are a little specialised but in our local organic supermarket we have a section where you can buy grains which you can mill in the shop I just buy them without milling them rinse them and use the Jaroudi method for cooking. a nice alternative to rice or wheat groats or bulgar wheat.
I bought oat groats a few months ago with no idea on what to do with them. Looks like I now have a way to incorporate them into a dish. Will give this a try. Thanks!
I just made this and it is super good. It is not very spicy but just enough. It is a little bit bitter but I paired it with butternut squash so it gives it a little sweetener, delicious 😋 I have also been eating it on romaine boats wit bits of pineapple for a little sweetener and acidity...great job guys thank you 😊
Hi Jessica & Brian, My husband and I are digging into this very weird chili right now and we have to say, “IT’S FANTASTIC”!! So full of flavor, toothsome.......really, out of this world 😍🤩‼️❤️ LOVE IT! Thanks for sharing your recipe with us!! It will definitely be on rotation in this house. We are soup/stew/chili kind of people, so we’re looking forward to your upcoming recipes. Peace, love, good health & prayers to you and yours, Denise & Ben
I've been adding cocoa to Brian's original chili for awhile. I also add about a cup of strong brewed coffee and use chipotle chile powder. Looking forward to trying the oat groats
I've always liked to add brown rice to my chili and will definitely try the oat groats. I recently got a bag. I never thought of chocolate and I bet it's fantastic. Thank you!
Making this today! Didn’t have kidney beans, so using black beans and chickpeas. Also throwing in TJ’s frozen roasted corn. Love that in my Chili! Thanks again!
Couldn't fine the groats so I had to order, two day ship. Got them today and I MADE THE CHILI! Very good, very tasty...you know what I like about this chili, I can eat it and I don't get heartburn. I can only eat a little of the normal chili I make. This one is great. And I love the groats in it. They are chewy and give it a extra bam...
My oat groats came in last night as did my glass lid to my IP, and "Weird Chilli" is cooking away as I type! Yay!! Smells amazing!! Thank you for sharing your recipes with us!! ❤
I’m making this right now, but I used cacao powder because that’s what I had and steel cut oats because I can’t wait for Amazon to make a delivery and I cannot find oat groats anywhere. It’s been simmering for about 30 minutes and it tastes so good
Your super tasty chili was the first WFPB recipes I tried. I ate it every day for a month while I transitioned to plant based. I am really excited to try this!
Just made one nearly like this!! Great addition with the groats. Love them . I added a TB. Peanut butter to mine. Gives it a wonderful earthy umami flavor like you've cooked it for hours. Great recipe nice video!
@Suzie D Let us know how the steele cut oats go. I was thinking of doing the same thing just because I already have some of those on hand right now. I was also thinking about buckwheat groats.
Finally got around to trying this chili today and it was the best! Your original chili recipe is always on rotation and I’m definitely including this one as well. Great recipe! Love your videos
I have never tried chili. It's not a common thing in my part of the world. I've seen other chili recipes but having never tried it I'm hesitant because I don't know how it should taste like. But Brian has made this so easy and compelling I'm definitely trying his recipe now!
Never saw oat grouts before. I use to make Veggie Chili with Bulgar Wheat and TVP. I usually add beer and broth, chili beans (not kidney). I always use Cocoa, bell pepper* and celery. The cocoa is what makes it rich and seems like it has cooked longer, I got the trick from Mexican mole sauce. The nice thing about Chili, you can put anything in it ( but glad you got rid of the Cinnamon/nutmeg, lol)
I just made this , but ended up adding a few rando vegetables bc my biweekly produce box is arriving in three days, so-- some summer squash, corn, celery and a jalapeño...upped the cocoa and chili powder a bit to compensate for all the extra real estate--and oh my gosh, guys--this is the tastiest chili ever. Having tonight with fresh cornbread. Thank you!
Ooh....I made some black bean soup recently and I added quinoa to it. I bet that would be a good substitute for the oat groats too. Plus quinoa only has to cook about 15mins, so that would save time as well. 👍🏾👍🏾
I made the chili tonight. It’s yummy but I think I prefer bulgar wheat over oat groats. I also added lots veggies. Great job! ****update: the chili the next day was spectacular. I am making a batch today and will stick with the oat groats and add even more veggies than I did last time. This recipe is a keeper!!!
I made this today and it is very good. Very hearty and rich. I confess I didn’t have oat groats and wanted immediate gratification so I subbed farro. Thanks for this recipe!
You guys are great! I just recently found your channel and I have been watching your videos from the beginning. You both are such an inspiration and so positive and upbeat. The chili looks amazing 😊
The chili looks amazing! I love it chunky too and I will definitely be making this soon. I can't eat kidney beans so I would probably use white beans or black beans instead. Thank you so much for all the great recipes! I always enjoy your videos. :)
Awww, Now i have something to use this case of red beans for, will try this with my brown rice I have on hand.I just happen to have all these ingredients for this recipe
I will make this. And I’ll call it chili mole. Mole is a Mexican dish that has cocoa I. The spicy sauce. This looks amazing!! I look forward to making it.
Pro tip on buying the groats (after buying exactly one time), my grocery store has a make your own oats machine next to the make your own peanut butter machine. The raw ingredient in the hopper are groats. So they just sold me a container full of those and I was all set.
Definitely chili (chilly) weather here in Syracuse NY! I can't wait to try it! Brian, your deliberate simple directions are just so conducive to getting me to try your recipes. I'm curious, I know one of your favorite ingredients are the ground up dried mushrooms. Any reason you didn't include them? Will they ruin it?
Nope, shouldn't ruin it at all. I am just trying to keep these soups and stew recipes simple. I want people who don't really cook to be able to throw these together and enjoy. 😀
I literally just ordered oat groats online because I have been looking to try them and can’t find them in stores by me. Very excited to make chili with them this weekend! Thanks for the recipe!
Cocoa in chili? Why did I never think of that- I mean cocoa and chilis (the spice) have been a thing since the Mayans. We have our own chili recipe that we have been perfecting for about 20 years, and now I'm going to try adding cocoa and steel-cut oats (because that's what's in my pantry) the next time we make chili. Thanks for the recipe!
I love oat groats! I do rotate between brown rice and oat groats for my batch cooking. Yumm Oh, you reminded me when I lived in Rio Grande Valley -TX/MX border in late 70's. Using cocoa in mexican dishes was a nice surprise I learned back then ...and forgot about until Brian's Chili!!
Wait a minute; the bulk bins at Whole Foods are open again?!?! Yay!! Love this recipe! Very similar to how I used to make meat chili. Good thing not to keep that cocoa powder a secret though, I have a couple relatives who can’t eat it due to heart issues, so do make sure and reveal it if you take it to a potluck. 😁
Cocoa powder is bad for heart conditions? I didn't know. All I had read (which isn't much) was that the flavonoids in cocoa help to reduce blood pressure. Just goes to show you never know what food might be unsafe to someone else.

Nice way how you presented all the ingredients, very professional looking
Thank you so much 🙂
Brittany Jaroudi definitely doesn't get enough credit. She has some fantastic recipes (including desserts).
You are right! That is why we are friends with her and will always give her shout outs on our channel.
Her fudgy brownie recipe makes regular appearances at our table.

MsDorkness I use bulgur also. And red lentils to thicken.
I ordered oat groats online recently, and they arrived today. Amazing coincidence - I'll take it as a sign that I should make this chili!
😱 yesssss!
I love autumn for the sole purpose of making chilli, soups, stews, roasted veggies... ugh yesssss 🍂
Same!! It's my favorite time of year. 😀
Krocks In The Kitchen mine too ❤️
Yep, I don't turn on oven until Fall. Now I bake and roast.
This looks delicious! Doesn't seem weird at all. Cocoa powder is an ingredient in mole and I often use a touch of cocoa powder and/or a splash of strong coffee into my chili. Dark un sweetened chocolate is used in many a Mexican, Spanish, Italian main dishes, but most Americans seem to think it is only for sweets,
I'd bulk that out with roasted peppers and mushrooms.. served on half a roasted butternut squash
So good!! I made a pot last night but used spelt berries (like whole wheat) because that's all I had but yum yum yum. Super tasty and the cooked whole grain gave a chewy meaty texture.
That's what I was going for. Any grain like that should work very well.😀
This is the absolute best chili that I have ever eaten !!! TY Brian and Jessica...
Just made this tonight .. followed the recipe exactly except used Raw Cacao .. it was fantastic!! Thanks so much!!
Great “meaty” chili! I topped it with some leftover cheeze sauce (the one with the butternut squash base...that was in your 4 cheese sauce video). Amazing combo.!
This is the best chilli we have eaten. We just love the flavor, and the oat groats are the bomb❣️👍👏 Bravo🎉

This was a dang good recipe! I used steel cut oats and it was fabulous! Thanks!
Awesome! Glad you liked it. 😀
What amount of steel cut did you use, Lisa? :)
We use soaked wheat berries (wheat that isn't ground) for a meat substitute.
Hi there Jessica and Brian! I made your Chili and I agree that it is great tasting. I added a couple of things. A keeper for me. The groats were a bit more chewy than I expected but still a nice addition to chili.
I just made this! The addition of the chocolate totally makes this dish. I made your delicious recipe tonight. I cooked it in the instant pot and added some sweet potato cubes. Love this recipe!
This is in my family recipe rotation, definitely a favorite!!
I just made this chili today. Love it! I added a little cinnamon to it and boy does it taste fabulous. Thanks for sharing your recipes with us.
Thank you Brian and Jessica for this recipe! Cant wait to try it! If people have a hard time finding the oat groats look at Natural Grocers store. My store always has them in stock. 😊

been adding cocoa powder and a bit of molasses to my chili's for years!

Why would anyone hate you guys? You guys are so awesome!!!
By the way, I love the humming Jessica makes when she's tasting food😄
Your super tasty chili was the first WFPB recipes I tried. I ate it every day for a month while I transitioned to plant based. I am really excited to try this!
That is awesome! Thank you so much for letting me know that. It truly does make me happy knowing my recipe helped you transition. 😀
Excellent chili! Thank you for sharing!
Just watched you on with Chef AJ, great video and Jessica did really well, you were very natural and super fun.
Just made one nearly like this!! Great addition with the groats. Love them .
I added a TB. Peanut butter to mine. Gives it a wonderful earthy umami flavor like you've cooked it for hours. Great recipe nice video!
Yes! Peanut Butter in Chili!
Sounds great! I thought about adding peanut butter to the chili but I wanted to keep the calorie density down. 😀
I use pb2 and that helps call count allot
Interesting! I might try pb2. 🤔
I bet some crushed up porcini mushrooms would go well in it .
Yum... I have not tried the groats yet...I am going to try my Steele cut oats in chili I think it might work... thanks for the recipe
That should work just fine. 😃
Thank you very much! 😀 This one turned out really great and I am glad you like it. 🙂
Ancho chili powder tastes good with the cocoa! BTW, I'm salivating watching all those ingredients go in the pot!
Oat grouts are the bomb, love them even better than steel cut for breakfast
Celery in chili is healthy and i love it. Learned it from my mother.

Chili was on the menu today. Looking forward to the soup series! Thanks.
Off subject, I recently made your black bean humus and it WAS AWESOME! Even my meat eater loved it!
When I make hot chocolate I always add a pinch of cayenne. It's amazing! And if you wake up with a sore throat and drink it, you're cured!
PD, caliente. Yes.
I made this chili last night! Amazing! I didnt have oat groats but I did have barley. Its was do good! Can't wait to have it again today. 🤗thank guys!
Thank you!
Q: What Comp. veggie box? I was going to try Misfits, but they didn't let you exclude certain veggies.
@@eveny119 I use Misfits. They let you "build" your box from a menu now-- or not, as you like.
@@christeljulia Thanks.
Yummm I tried it and I love it❤️ ! Thank you for sharing !
I just finished making this. It is so good! Best recipe I’ve made from the Krock Kitchen so far. Thank you!
Good description of oat groats. Since I've discovered them I rarely use rolled or steel cut oats any more.
Can't wait to try this recipe!
I'll give this a go. The chocolate looks really interesting and it seems the oats would make bean chili satiating.
I'll bet you could use pearled barley instead of oat groats. They have a nice chewy texture and a slightly nutty flavor.
I do that all the time, but I love Oat Groats as well, nice to have options!
Ooh....I made some black bean soup recently and I added quinoa to it. I bet that would be a good substitute for the oat groats too. Plus quinoa only has to cook about 15mins, so that would save time as well. 👍🏾👍🏾
Hulled barley is the whole grain. If wheat is ok try Bulgar.
Butternut squash zoodles with this for the topping....yes please!
Love the Jaroudis and the Krocks. Thank you so much! I just made a pot. Oh my goodness! So yummy! 😋
Great idea on the sloppy joe! I am cooking this now. Thanks for the inspiration darlings 😘
This recipe very good. I am going to try and use it in an instant pot. Thank you for the recipe.
I love soup in the Fall. Would love for Brian to come up with a recipe for Fall. Pretty please Brian🌺🌷🌺
This looks delicious! I add cocoa to my chili often as well as a dash of nutmeg. The addition of oat groats is excellent! Thank you
That sounds yummy. I have guests coming this weekend and this and some baked potatoes (of course) will be perfect!
Quick question, have you made this in the Instant Pot?
We have not. Some other viewers have done it and said it turned out great, but I don't have cooking times for the groats. 😀
Can’t wait to try this!!!!
Awww, Now i have something to use this case of red beans for, will try this with my brown rice I have on hand.I just happen to have all these ingredients for this recipe
Red beans and rice....bean burgers.....refried beans......bean burritos...... 😋
I will make this. And I’ll call it chili mole. Mole is a Mexican dish that has cocoa I. The spicy sauce. This looks amazing!! I look forward to making it.
Great base recipe. I think I would add celery and carrots and maybe corn. I buy oat groats on amazon.
Have you ever considered creating a cookbook in the future? I think it would be a big hit, for sure.
Good chili...loved the oat groats. Next time I will add some bell pepper.
Yumm! Reminds me of a healthy Cincinnati chili
Loved the last chili recipe. Can't wait to try this one.
Pro tip on buying the groats (after buying exactly one time), my grocery store has a make your own oats machine next to the make your own peanut butter machine. The raw ingredient in the hopper are groats. So they just sold me a container full of those and I was all set.
Thank you! I have oat groats leftover from a raw granola recipe. I will totally try this until I am out of groats.
I wonder if you could use farro instead of oat groat? Looks delicious! I really enjoy following you...and Brian's podcast!
Love you guys. Looking forward to trying the chili. Cheers.
You could possibly substitute pearl barley in place of oat groats but the recipe looks great and yummy!
Tis the season for all things Krock in a pot... I can't wait to make this one!!!
Making this recipe this weekend . Will get back to you which one is my pick.
I literally just ordered oat groats online because I have been looking to try them and can’t find them in stores by me. Very excited to make chili with them this weekend! Thanks for the recipe!
I'm definitely going to try this it looks fantastic.
Please do! We love it. 😀
im gunna make this today !! looks delish and recipe looks easy to throw togeather thank you
Omg! Looks amazing . Will definitely try this one . Thank y’all for all the inspiration and recipes it helps tremendously!🤗
i love your previous chili and i'm looking forward to this one. Could you give directions as to how we could make these chili's in the instant pot?
Cocoa in chili? Why did I never think of that- I mean cocoa and chilis (the spice) have been a thing since the Mayans.

Will try this for sure! I might add some carrots, and just a pinch of cinnamon (my chef friend always added cinnamon to his chili)
That's a mid western/ohio chili ingredient.
