Anakin pulled dangerous stunts but he treated his troops on the field as equals which grew a lot of respect among him as a General.

Anakin may come up with these shenanigan plans but he will never put his clones where he wouldn't do himself. He always lead at the front which is why the top clones of the 501st respect him.
He obviously had an influence on the clones he leads, making them think on their feet in the most orthodox way heck I would say the best of the 501st were arc trooper material mainly because of Anakin.
I mean problem with that is well, he's a super magical battle monk with force powers.... The clones are not...

Anakin always led his men into battle even putting his life on the line for them. In hindsight Rex and the 501st have deep respect towards Anakin.
This is hilarious. Skywalker was one of the few that treated his troops with respect. Pong Krell on the other hand, was a definite danger to all clones.

Not really he led the most successful missions and clearly had a lot of compassion for his men. I imagine most clones wanted a Anakin as their leader
Applications for transfer into the 501st must have skyrocketed after each mission.
His missions we’re always successful because of plalps because: can’t have your apprentice die and easier to make him war hero if he doesn’t lose. For instance umbara he got pulled out because palps couldn’t control umbarans
Anakin was a good tactical leader. He was the guy who did really well when given a specific objective and told to make it happen. He could improvise, adapt, and overcome obstacles. He could inspire his men to do amazing things - he was the kind of officer who would say "follow me," instead of "go do it." Those officers are valuable and definitely have a place in the army.
The truism of troop's loyalty and love of the commander who leads from the front is absolute.
It commands respect and honour, both being primary and pivotal in the soldier's mindset and effectiveness.
As with all great and loved commanders there is also an abundance of compassion and consideration of the troops he leads.
Never expending lives unnecessarily, always knowing what the troops experience in their service to the objective under his command.
Alexander the Great being a prime example.
Ironic. His love for others can save them from deaths or becoming Sith Lords. But yet, he cannot prevent himself from falling to the Dark Side of the Force.
Ironically you see other jedi and I felt they just dont care. Kiadi Mundi was like a psycopath to me and he was leading the marines.
Even Mace and Obi Wan himself felt completely unattached or oblivious.
The best Jedi were the ones who cared about the clones. Plo Koon for example was just as compassionate as Anakin. "But sir, we're just clones. we're expendable." "Not to me."

Most likely train him by himself anyway. If he survived Darth Maul, of course.
You did forget one point, Anakin was being trained by fire by Sideous to be his apprentice during the war. This brings in the question if the mission Anakin took were one pushed by Palpatine to gain a reputation in winnable battles, or forced into a sink or swim type of training. Knowing the Sith, probably both in he was not going to give Anakin a mission unwinnable but not exactly easy. Unlike a lot of Jedi who were probably manipulated into unwinnable battles without them realizing it, or did which is why they caught on as the Masters that survive began to look into the Republic and ask why there were sent to fight there in the first place.
Jedi were very good commanders of leading small elite squads but not good Generals. They are too emotionally attached or too emotionally detached. Palpatine knew this and that's why he pushed Jedi to this position.

Yea. if I wasin charge there Jedi would be not Generals of the entire legions but instead a commanders of a strike teams made of elite clones. max 100 clones per jedi.

Only some Jedi I would allow to lead but that would only be after said jedi would prove their worth as a battlefield commander. Starting off however, most Jedi involved in the war would only be involved in more elite strike groups rather than leading huge numbers of troops.

I'd say that applies to most Jedi but not all of them. Jedi like Yoda probably have enough experience to lead properly, and ones like Windu probably didn't take too long (maybe a few months) to learn enough tactics that their Force powers of precognition could mostly compensate and sometimes allow them to pull off otherwise impossible missions, especially since the theorectical principles of tactics were taught in the Temple just in case. Windu in particular had Shatterpoint, an ability that allowed him to see where things broke, and those things included battles and campaigns, not just gemstones; I'd imagine that would be pretty useful. Back in the old days, Jedi fought in wars often enough and sometimes for long enough that they became actually good tacticians, and I would take one of those over just about anyone else.

One of the best things in the battle of Umbara is seeing how the clones respect Anakin. When they are talking about Krell's suicidal strategies, they appreciate General Skywalker's willingnes to also put himself in danger when he makes a bold attack, an admirable trait that the traitor Krell lacked.

They would have just cut off communications and joined Anakin and Padme against Palpatine.
Current canon, it's the inhibitor chips. But I wonder how much of the 501st in legends went along with the Empire because they knew Vader was Anakin and just stuck with him. He had a massively loyal unit because of his shenanigans.
Having read the X-wing series, Republic Commando books and a lot of other military sci-fi and actual history, he is almost textbook as a dangerously devoted officer. Like Bardan Jusik in Triple Zero and True Colors. But, he also escaped criticism from commando units, unlike Obi-wan, Yoda, Vos and Windu. Who they all despised
Haven't read the full Republic Commando series yet. Is it mentioned that they disliked those Jedi?
@@Helljumper556 It is, because they are wasteful, arrogant or outright despise the clones. Windu and Yoda treat them as completely disposable, no issues with them being slave troops bred to die. Vos outright refuses to even acknowledge they're people, in any way. And Obi-wan talks about them the same way you'd talk about a good dog.

@@alexhudson277 That series is.... difficult, let's put it that way. And also laughably incorrect in certain respects. Part of the issue is the author as Karen Traviss is notorious among sci-fi fandoms for writing up or "adopting" characters already in the setting as self inserts to champion her chosen narrative and then bending or rewriting entire characters and elements of the setting to FIT that narrative. Books written by Traviss within established settings tend to be deeply divisive because of this as she'll often take established characters and write them in horribly out of character fashion to justify her characters' beliefs, and much of the time she'll outright contradict heavily established lore simply because she didn't bother to do the research. When called out on these things Traviss has a habit of then demonizing the fans, and gained a LOT of hatred for coining the phrase "Talifan" - even when those people calling out the mistakes are credible experts within the lore or established field of expertise.
Windu was certainly detached and Vos absolutely hated his clones, but Obi-Wan was usually right there on the front lines the same as Anakin was and Yoda recognized each and every one as unique individuals the very same as Etain and Jusik did.
And here's the thing. Taken in a vacuum the Republic Commando novels are very well written. They're good books and I own all of them myself. But they're definitely one of those series where it only really works if you read it as a second hand account/perspective, colored by the beliefs of the characters in the narrative. Because we know none of them have met the characters they're smack talking, and generally only speaking from their own personal experiences which are themselves limited. The Jedi Order definitely had a ton of problems when it came to dogma and restrictive beliefs but they were NOT Nazis which is what Traviss went on record more or less equating them to. That said, the Republic Commando books were far, FAR less offensive than what Traviss did with the Halo novels.
@@slate8409 Those were simply a handful of my favourites that I cited, the points made do still stand though. Because, multiple authors make it very clear that there are issues with how short-sighted Windu and Yoda are. Which can be seen in the entire way they run the order in the lead up to, and during the wars. Which can be seen in many of Alan's videos, as well as those of Geetsly and Eckhart's Ladder.
As for Obi-wan, multiple people have pointed out his shocking disregard for any kind of decency. The fact that his first line in regard to Anakin is,"why do I get the feeling we've picked up yet another useless lifeforms?" Not to mention the many war crimes we see him commit in the Clone Wars series, and the way he (and Anakin) callously dismiss the points made by Slick that they're leading a slave army. Anakin at least cares enough to make an attempt not to needlessly waste clone lives. Whereas Obi-wan seems unconcerned by their deaths. Which is likely why Cody oversaw day to day operations.
As far as the issues you have with a particular author, it seems that you have overlooked just how interconnected those novels are with the narratives from Zahn, Karpyshyn, Reaves, and Allston. And that's just in Star Wars. As for the Halo books, she certainly didn't change the existing depictions of Halsey, ONI, the Spartans, Covenant or even Mendez.
She cna be stingy with her characters, but does work within guidelines. And Halo is meant to be a heartbreaking series, the Spartans always got the worst end of the deal. Ask Nylund and Dietz.

Being a Danger to your men is kinda part of being a general. A better question is whether Anakin ever made his men do anything dangerous without reason.

He is a commander. His job is to spend the lives and resources he has well in the pursuit of his mission objectives. To do that, you must be a danger to your men, because your job is to spend their lives. But, it is hard to argue he was a danger to his men relative to circumstance, given he was one of the most successful generals of the entire war. And given that, it is hard to say he was wasteful of or dangerous to the lives under his command relative to a general. All parties understood that he was doing his job well. His soldiers understood this, and ultimately would not consider him a danger bc he was doing his job well and allowing them to do theirs well. They just happen to have dangerous jobs
A comparison of what traits each company of clones got from their Jedi general would be interesting. You said that it was Anakin's boldness and outside the box thinking rubbed off on not just rex, but a lot of his Arc troopers.
What traits did Plo koon give? Did Mace Windu give? Or even what did obi wan give to both the top clone commander, but to the common solider under their command?
Do we know at what age Padawans were deployed on battlefields? Was Ashoka the youngest child soldier of the Jedi order or did they go even younger?
Caleb Dume a.k.a. Kanan Jarrus, and Cal Kestis were pretty young padawans as well. Not exactly sure what their ages were at the time of Order 66.
I don't think age matters but if they are good enough to defend themselves. That is my guess.
@@detroitandclevelandfan5503 My comment was more about the trauma and the fact that asking a 14 year old girl to lead an entire platoon of soldiers might be ill-advised. Of course they can probably survive battle droids, but are they ready to be responsible for the deaths of clones?
@@arthurbriand2175 On the one hand, the Light Side of the Force can reduce, alleviate and heal mental trauma. On the other hand, most padawans are definitely too young to lead more than a handful of soldiers, so any Masters who put them in charge of more than that were doing a pretty bad job, and I'd imagine there were more of those than the Order would be willing to admit.
Being able to keep up with Leroy Jenkins Skywalker is why the 501st is so legendary.
Anakin would have hated Krell.
Another reason why most of the 501st didn’t suffer much casualties was because Palpatine gave strict orders for Dooku to throw most of the battles with the 501st, propping up Anakin as the face of the Jedi Order in the clone wars and keeping morale in the 501st pretty high. Of course, the matter wouldn’t change much regardless considering how effective the 501st was to begin with
except the 501st did suffer high casualties and palpatine didnt babied them but used them personally for very critical missions for himself
I do think, Anakin's fall, should not been, "I want more", but, "I can't take this any more". Just, the loss of so many troopers under Jedi command.

One reason the 501st made a lot of arc troopers may be because many of it troopers were able survive missions often enough to actually learn and retain that knowledge that can only be had through combat, using your example of Pong Krell as a foil, I think it’s a safe bet that Pong Krell wasn’t responsible for too many (if any) ARC Troopers…

The 501st was probably always used as a unit for max priority missions. Which might even have made it easier to assess the importance of a certain objective for any CIS commander.
Units less renowned might have faced less stiff resistance just because they were not always used as crack forces to save the day or iron fist a victory.
From what I see Anakin was an inspiring commander and skilled fighter but a poor tactician, and while he was beloved by the troops he probably could have saved a lot more by stepping back from the frontline

Well hold on Allan , frontal assault isn’t the problem a frontal charge is it’s suicide a frontal assault with adequate support elements can be very effective especially if you can harass a flank and conquer the sides as well as if you have fire superiority , I mean it’s not the frontal assault that’s a problem if it is performed well enough however with extreme resistance usually being placed in the front of the objective it is unlikely it will be successfully used in that case
As opposed.... To the usual Jedi whoms either lack of or probably crap shoot ideas of what constitutes "tactics"?? I ALWAYS saw him for the clear battlefield genius and Tactician he was. He managed to lead MANY beings, not just the 501st to quite a string of victories that all of them probably woulda died had anyone else been in charge that day. An he built a career,not only for them an others but against quite a few of the WORST, smartest an deadliest enemies the CIS had to throw at him.
I'd prefer being under his command, rather than most. Another good one would be Obi-Wan. Seems like respirator xeno over there in command of the 104th is the best xeno general.
Yes and no. He gets them in trouble, but he fights alongside them, so they don't care.
Do you think the Republic Judicial Forces like Yularen and Tarkin would have been more effective than jedis as an officer corp?
Also have you guys done some Dune content? The tactics and weapons are probably ripe for in depth analysis.
I would imagine these officers would lead a lot like how they do in the Empire since several of these officers became Imperials. Guys who didn’t care about their troopers, who didn’t care about civilian casualties, and who didn’t care about respecting the rights of prisoners of war. Trust me when I say even Anakin who has a mixed track record of that last point would still make a better military commander than most officers with a few exceptions like Admiral Yularen for instance. I actually think the Clone Wars would have been bloodier if these officers had full control of the Republic military. Sure the Jedi were inexperienced, but since the alternative was future officers of the Empire, it really isn’t that hard of a choice.
@@tristankawatsuma8962 You could argue that the Empire had a profoundly toxic hierarchical structure. The officers would get killed by higher ups in case of failure. There were numerous cases of passing the parcel and blaming subordinates, foavoritism for well connected families. It kinda reminds me of the Soviet Red army structure with the military minded officers and the political officers who only wanted to please the masters and have a clean record. The Republic was already falling but it was still a Republic, the Judicial forces may not have turned all villain.

I would argue that tho Anakin got the job done, he would do it often recklessly. He reminds me of Capt Kirk. Rough and tumble, often with casualties. Perhaps too many.

I thought anakin cared to much for his friends. That was his 1 fault. It led him to turn to the dark side to save them. It always bugged me that Luke appeared to use the dark side briefly. I wish that was the point. Dark side can be used briefly but has to be given up immediately.
Thats sort of explained with Darth Revan, he was one of the few Sith who controlled the Dark Side, not let it control him, he knew to use it in moderation to achieve true strength, as light and dark where both necessary forces in the universe that misconceptions drew both to extremes and was the ultimate undoing of both sides

After rewatching the episode of clone wars where he led his clones IN A PARADE MARCH TO A DEATH BRIDGE then I gotta say... hes brave and strong alone but a terrible tactician. He didnt even think of clearing the hives he was walking between. All of his tanks were sitting next to each other so a single volley took them out. He should of led special forces or commandos only not a legion.

Either as Anakin Skywalker Jedi Knight or as Darth Vader. He still went out of his way to lead his troops in combat. Although after the last of the Clones died in the Imperial Army, he rarely lead his unit Vader’s Fist into combat as they mostly consisted of poorly trained and inept humans instead of the well trained highly skilled Jango Fett Clones.
You insult Vader's Fist. That unit was composed of the best soldiers the Empire had, meaning they were highly trained and extremely competent--maybe even as competent as the average Clone Trooper!
