HOLY. CRAP. I made this for my family for dinner tonight and it is hands down the best dish I have ever made, possibly best dish I've ever eaten in my life. Sooooo delicious, it's like better than restaurant quality. Also shockingly easy to clean up after, too! THANK YOU NISHA!!!! Will be making this again very very very soon
I made it tonight also and it's so good! And using ingredients that are cheap and that I mostly have in my pantry! This will definitely be becoming a regular!
Oh I’m so making this and sharing it with my neighbors. They are an elderly couple and my husband and I trade recipes with them and routinely have them over for dinner in non-pandemic times. We’ve all been so isolated so we make sure to bring them a meal every week. When they are done eating they usually take a walk to the house to drop off our clean dish and we enjoy a scotch on the front steps. It’s getting cold so outside drinks will stop soon but we are not going to break tradition and it starts with this meal.
India is vegetarian heaven, yes but vegan friendly? Absolutely not. I am a vegan living in India and life is much harder than if I were living in the west. There are no plant based alternatives to any animal products, which means no plant based milk. I have to make almond, cashew and oat milks at home, which I don't really mind, but store bought ones in the west are fortified with calcium, vitamin b12 etc. I have to take b12 supplements. No soybeans in the market, no soy milk and therefore no tofu. (And I used to love cottage cheese when I was vegetarian). India is a dairy loving country and the biggest producer of dairy so dairy products are found almost everywhere, especially desserts. Ghee (milk fat) is also used in almost every dish. Plus vegan restaurants are an EXTREME rarity. There isn't a single one in my city. The only good thing about being vegan in India is that I don't have to endure the stupid and blatantly tone deaf arguments against veganism that one comes across in the west. No one even knows the term "vegan" here. I might be the only vegan in my city.
Ingredients: ● 1 tablespoon refined or virgin coconut oil, or a neutral-flavored oil ● 4 cloves garlic, minced ● 2 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and minced or grated ● 1 tablespoon minced fresh turmeric, or 1 teaspoon ground turmeric ● 1-2 serrano peppers, diced (adjust according to desired spice level) ● 1 teaspoon ground cumin ● 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander ● 1/2 teaspoon Indian red chili powder (if you only have regular chili powder, which is a blend, use 1 teaspoon) ● 2 teaspoons curry powder ● 1 teaspoon garam masala ● Kosher salt or sea salt to taste (I use about 1 tsp kosher salt, and add more at the end) ● Freshly cracked black pepper to taste ● 1 cup (180-190g) red lentils, or split red lentils (the split variety will cook a bit quicker) ● 2 cups (480 mL) low-sodium vegetable broth ● 1 (14-ounce / 400g) can crushed tomatoes (or half of a 28-ounce can) ● 1 (13.5-ounce/400 mL) can full-fat coconut milk ● 3 tablespoons unsweetened creamy almond butter ● 1/2 a small lemon, juiced ● 1/2 cup (~8g) fresh cilantro, roughly chopped ● For serving: Basmati or Jasmine rice and Indian flatbread such as roti, paratha, or naan
@@medusa4944 thanks! I just hate having to navigate between the webpage & UA-cam video while I'm cooking (& chaotically rushing about the kitchen 😁) so I find having the ingredients list in the description or comments quite helpful
The is the best vegan dish I’ve made so far! My husband repeatedly said, “This is so good. Thank you for making this!” Even my picky daughter was lured in and ate it up. I swapped a few items based on what I had in my pantry - paprika instead of chili powder, tahini instead of almond butter, and white balsamic vinegar instead of lemon juice - and it still turned out phenomenal. I can’t wait to recreate this using all of the original ingredients! Thank you for helping to make vegan dishes that are gobbled up by all!
That's amazing! I'd've never thought to swap almond butter for tahini. How much do you add? I know Tahini is very strong and would hate to ruin the dish by adding too much 😅
@@UI_3939 i just made this dish yesterday with tahini and I used the same amount as stated in the recipe (2 tbsp). Howeverrr, you're completely right! I would recommend just 1 tablespoon :)
My daughter recently turned vegetarian, and it's not even for any ethical reasons, it's her not liking yet another food group. Next time she's home I'm definitely going to try her with this and give her the recipe. I worry when she's living away from home, I think she's not eating enough variety
You are a godsend. My girlfriend recently has been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease and been on a very strict vegan diet. I’ve been looking around for dinner ideas and can’t thank you enough for the help.
@Mellouw can we talk? I think I may have Hashimoto’s or something similar but I have to wait too long to get into my endocrine doctor and what ever I have is hard to catch, my blood work shows my thyroid is bad only when I’m in the middle of a bad attack to the point I can’t breathe. Did your GF experience attacks at night with heart palpitations, soar throat, anxiety, sweating, tremor, shortness of breath, burning in lungs, intense hunger, difficulty sleeping, pain everywhere, for a couple weeks at a time every night, only at night or the afternoon? And then an off period where you feel sort of normal but also very lethargic, not hungry, and sleep a lot for like a month or so? Did she suffer from low B12 and low Vitamin D before getting diagnosed? Did she use heavy amounts of cannabis and nicotine to control her symptoms before she knew what was wrong?

I've never liked cooking and whenever I try a recipe it always fails. But I gave this a try and it was unbelievable! I was so shocked how amazing this turned out. My leftovers are already gone after 2 days and I need to make more!
I made this for the family a few weekends ago. My husband is a carnivore. His idea of vegetables is frozen corn. Well he tried it just because my kids made him. He LOVED it. He loved it so much that he requested it tonight for dinner. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe with me. You definitely convinced me and my husband. Will keep this recipe in my weeknight arsenal for sure! Thanks again 🇨🇦❤️😊
My gf made this for me and it is the most complex and delicious dish I have ever tasted and that she has ever made. We have made vegan currys before and let me tell you, not one pot has ever been licked clean like this one has. We ate every last bit of this and I think it lasted 3 meals for us!! Tonight it is my turn to make it ☺️
Grated ginger hack: Buy a large batch of fresh ginger. Peel and chop into pieces. Throw into a Vitamix and add just enough water to make a thick paste. Put into an ice cube tray and freeze.Pop out and store in a freezer bag. Each cube is a potent 1Tbsp of grated ginger.
The ginger cubes in freezer bags seem to keep the strong potent flavor for months. I usually do a couple pounds at a time. I think the tricks is to use minimal water in the vitamix, freeze immediately and take it out of the ice cube trays right after freezing because it’s exposed to air and freezer burn if left in the trays for too long If no vitamix, you could try a regular blender or food processor and see if it works. I’ve only tried a Vitamix though so I’m not sure.
Being British and a curry lover I was excited to try this, I'm neither a veggie or Vegan but I do often try foods from these categories and my wife sticks mainly to veggie and sometimes vegan diets. So wanting to make something nice for her, your headline grabbed me in and we were not disappointed. Superb recipe and so very tasty. Thank you
UPDATE: We made your Red Lentil Curry, EVERYONE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! I even doubled the recipe and the next day I had it for dinner, again and here comes my kids, “What, you were going to eat that without us? I want a bowl.” And here they just got done eating their dinner!! The other best part, outside of how excellent it was, my 20 old son came down as I was about to start preparing and washed his hands and said, “Ok, put me to work”. After dinner he said, “Call me down anytime you’re making her recipes.” Girl, don’t ever change that recipe, it’s spot on! Used turmeric too😋
I can't believe I even made this! I had indian food like twice in my life, in my country it's not much popular, because we use less spices and less chilli and ginger, so for me is Indian food like a fire in my mouth. But I tried to be careful with the spices in this recipe and I love it so much! It's the best Indian and the best vegan food I ever had. And still can't believe I made it. Thank you so much for sharing these recipes, I'm starting realizing being vegan is not impossible for me.
I just made this today, in fact, it's still simmering on the stove. I had to come on and say that this is absolutely DELICIOUS!!! It's something I'm going to cook a LOT. I cannot overstate how happy I am with this dish. My dinner guests are going to flip at how good this is. Thank you for this incredible recipe, Nisha! I've been moving toward a vegan diet as a lifestyle change so I can get healthier and this dish is going to help that happen by keeping my tummy happy and satisfied. I can't wait to try some more of your recipes!
Ugh. I hate that kids are so dang mean sometimes. I can’t believe people teased you because your house “smelled like curry”. My neighbors were best friends with me and my brother growing up. They were Indian via the UK. I STILL remember how good that house always smelled to me. I remember their mom wearing lots of jewelry and jingling when she walked and listening to her sing along to the Beatles while she cooked. Such a bright happy home and family. They used to serve a dish just like this often. Great memories associated with this dish but I’ve never tried to make it myself. Didn’t think it would be this simple!
Their loss is that they will never get to experience what that smell tastes like😄. I use to be. One of those ignorant fools that had no clue of the awesomeness of the Indian food! 😱🤗
I would have said "What's smells so good? Curry?" Goes home: "Mom, can you make curry???" I had a 4th grade friend who just moved to NJ from California is 1965....I had TACOS at her house and had never even HEARD of a "taco." Got my mom to make the Old El Paso tacos....my dad LOVED them! I will never forget that! Well, we ALL loved them!
I'm a year late but this recipe is legit. I used substitutes for some of the ingredients and this curry still bangs (tastes delicious). Definitely in my cooking repertoire now.
I've made this three times in the last three weeks and we've just run out and I'm planning to get the coconut milk to make it again today. It's so so good.
Couldn’t sleep, so I decided to make this six in the morning. It was incredibly delicious! I also made the garlic nan bread and it was amazing. My family had this for breakfast haha
I wanted to join the chorus of voices praising this recipe and say thank you! I made it today, and it's incredible. Your channel is helping inspire me to incorporate more plant-based food into my diet in a delicious way. Keep up the good work!
Tip from an Indian who cooks lentils every other day: soak your raw lentils overnight (or even for a couple of hours in warm water) before cooking, and reduce your time at the stove by 50%!
she cooked the lentils for 25minutes, that is not long enough to want to reduce the time :D i mean the lentils also have to absorb the tarka and the sauce a bit...
We had an Asian American Pacific Islander event at my job. A few people we asked to cook food from an Asian culture and say how or why they chose it and how it impacted them. I chose this dish, i doubled the recipe and was a bit conservative on the spiciness of it since making for such a big group. I still thought I would have a bit left over for myself for leftovers for work. When I came back and I tell you those people SCRAPED the bottom of my crockpot and a few people asked me for the recipe so I sent them the link to this video and one guy even said it reminded him of an Indian food restaurant he used to go to in college. Made my day! i was smiling so hard from all of the compliments. Never made Indian food before but it was delicious and pretty simple. Will be adding this to the rotation. ABSOLUTLEY LOVED THIS!!! Thank you so much!
Been trying more plant-based cooking this year had this recipe recommended to me and have now made it twice and it is one of the best dishes i have ever made. I added diced kale to mine because I am trying to get more greens and a diced potato. This will be in my regular rotation of recipes. love the channel!
As someone who used to get teased as a kid for bringing Indian food to school, and now as an adult gets requests from friends to make Indian food I’m so happy to see you teaching everyone how to make a simple dal. Let’s make everyone’s house smell like curry! Just a couple of things, if one is not allergic to peanuts, using coldpressed peanut oil to sauté spices in actually gives a lot of additional flavor. If you sauté a small amount of ural dal or some cashews, it will give a slight crunchy feel at times to the dal. A little bit of textural variety, I guess this is why Indian moms are always yelling at us to not forget the tadka! I love the coconut milk idea, that’s brilliant! Incidentally my grandmother did not eat onions or garlic for spiritual reasons. What I’ve been told is that if you add asafoetida (hing) that actually can substitute for that flavor. You have inspired me try this in an instant pot (which has been sitting unused in my kitchen for at least a year) 😊
Thank you for your comment! Yes, let's get more kitchens to smell like curry! I will be staying with my parents for a few weeks, so I'm looking forward to raiding my mom's stash (I know she has lots of urad dal and asafoetida!). Neither of my parents really use peanut oil so I'm not too familiar with it, but I will try it out!
@@RainbowPlantLife As a peanut sensitive person, I'd caution you about using this for your public recipes, It's generally consider a low quality, very mass produced oil. And makes some of us very ill. When I was small it was in lots of foods since it was so cheap, even candy. I never had an M&M until they changed the formula when I was an adult 😢. I've lately gotten into avocado oil (slightly healthier as oils go, with a mild flavor and high smoke point). I buy the spray bottles so I can get just a touch of oil for nice browning with virtually no calories.
I only rediscovered the flavours of peanut oil or groudnut oil after 25years of living out of India. I remember that my grandmothers kitchen used to produce amazingly mouth watering dishes with this oil. Of course, one has to check intolerance level. But an honest confession is that using groundnut oil in my Indian cooking has helped me to lose weight too. Thank you for sharing friendly sarathy. Education in another style of cooking is always welcome 😊👆❤
Anna - so nice to hear your perspective! I had been using canola oil in America for many years, found that olive doesn’t really work well with Indian spices, it’s also not high heat friendly either. And then when I was spending time in India I realized that people are using ground nut oil or peanut oil and it would create a really beautiful taste in the dishes and this is a traditional cooking oil in certain parts of India. I like the spectrum brand expeller pressed peanut oil that you can find at Whole Foods. Also realized that different regions of India have different cooking oil’s, Yes, I find that cooking in peanut oil also helps with your weight, I think perhaps you don’t end up using as much oil because the oil itself is so flavorful. Good luck on all your cooking and health endeavors!
“I wasn’t that funny as a kid” that story and that line made laugh. The editing style is so cute and makes it easy to stay with the video. What a good video. Excited to try the recipe. Thanks for sharing.
It’s the first recipe of yours I tried. I then tried tens of others in your book because it’s just ridiculously good and makes me fall in love with your recipes!
I had everything onhand, so I tried it . . . .totaly spectacular. Everyone liked it. I served it with pita bread, brown rice, sprouted pumpkin seeds, and some newly snipped chives and parsley. It's fabulous and filling.
Great timing! Just this morning I was staring at a bag of red lentils in my pantry and wondering what I would make with them. Your recipe answered my question, thanks!
RainbowPlantLife question for you: I notice you (and other UA-cam chefs) dice or mince your garlic rather than use a garlic press. I’m lazy and the garlic press seems a convenience, is there a practical difference? Should I avoid using the press?
I guess the big difference is, as you said, convenience. Personally, I find it more convenient to only use my chef knife when cooking as I just have to clean one item instead of two.
As a meat eater... I fully & wholeheartedly approve of this message. This "Daal" or Lentil Curry is my personally comfort food.. nutritious, easy on the tummy & easy to make... I have been eating this for so long.. and I always salivate at the thought of eating this again
I think we need to revise the word "meat eater", you don't exactly eat meat exclusively, you eat other food including meat, so vegan food shouldn't be repulsive to you.
I'm an omnivore, I eat what I find to be good. Whether it's a Vegetarian, Vegan or Meat dish. I've had lentil curry many times. I personally prefer spicy Lamb Madras. But I'll sit and eat Vegan food with vegans without complaining because if the food is good, it's good. Now... vegan cheese on the other hand.... that's just wrong.
My gf and I made this and it was a magical experience. The layers of flavor, the deepness of the spices…omg this was so good. We loved it with 2 serranos (my baby mouth is evolving!). Thank you for sharing!
Before finding your videos, I never really thought I was a fan of Indian food because I am not a fan of cumin in large quantities. I started watching your videos and seeing just how much more goes into many Indian dishes (as well as cutting back on the cumin just a touch), and man I can't get enough of it! I have made two of your curries so far, and they are fantastic. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! =)
I'm glad that my videos have enabled you to enjoy Indian food, yay! Indian food is all about a balance of spices - rarely is there a single spice that should dominate in flavor. And of course, if cumin isn't your thing, you can go easy on it :)
Thank you so much Nisha. I sent your link to 20 friends and family members. We all had a zoom cooking night making this recipe together and had a great time. Your recipe was a hit even with the spouses who were not sure about the idea of curry. I really enjoy your content and have made several of your other recipes helping me to enjoy my new WFPB lifestyle these last 8 months. Oh and by the way I'm down more than 50 lbs and my labs have improved so much. Your the best, keeping it light and I love the little comments from your "camera man."
Just made this after all the positive comments and....... it’s delicious. Omitted the pepper (my husband can’t handle spice) I also added 1 tablespoon of coconut sugar to balance the flavors. The lemon juice at the end is key. This taste like butter chicken without the chicken. So good. Next time I’ll add Some fenugreek leaves.
Very good that u added lemon juice in India every home has it's own dal recipe we don't call it curry😅 in my house mostly add lemon juice in dal or tamarind paste with vegetables
This is DELICIOUS! Seriously! The flavor is on point! Ive been eyeing this recipe since the day you first uploaded the recipe, and now, over a year later, I finally made it! My family loved it! They all went back for seconds, and that’s really saying something! Thank you thank you thank you for this amazing recipe.

I was never a fan of curry. I wanted to expand my tastes and tried out this recipe. It’s absolutely delicious! Not only will I make this more often, I want to explore different kinds of curry. Thank you for providing this recipe!
I made this last night for dinner and my family loved it so much that they’ve requested me to make it again!!! I had never received huge compliments before until cooking this dish. It was truly a hit and absolutely delicious. Thank you for creating this beautiful recipe! 🤍
I made this AMAZING curry today. I used fresh turmeric per her suggestion. I added onions because I can’t live without them lol I also used juicy fresh tomatoes and used tahini in place of the almond butter. If you haven’t made this curry yet then do yourself a favor and do it!!!! Thank you ma’am for this yummy yum
Thank you for confirming I can use tahini instead of almond butter, I was thinking that whilst watching the video. 😊 It has plenty of good recommendations, so I will definitely cook this. As the lady said it uses most of what you have in the pantry. Definitely my sort of dish.
This video was recommended to me; so I watched it. Then, I immediately got in my car and hit up the grocery store for the ingredients I didn't have. Having just tasted the final dish, I can honestly say that the flavors are so beautiful, and this dish is definitely a winner. I'm packing up an extra container to take to a coworker for lunch tomorrow!

@anya rhines would this taste just as good without the tomatoes? I'm allergic to tomatoes and it always makes me sad that all curry recipes seem to add tomatoe in some way :/

@@shitalkanitkar5995 ooh I didn't know about tomato rasam. Gastritis is a very sad thing for people who love to eat. That looks so good. I have just turned 50 and am planning to transit to a plant - based diet and this will no doubt be an early and enduring staple of my repetoire. I have been a vegan for 52 years and I worked as a chef for 23 years. So believe me when I say that this dish is one of my favorite things I have made. The layer upon layer of spices and flavors make this something I will go back to over and over. Chef's kiss to you Nisha.
This is now a staple in my house! I make this once a week and everyone loves it, even my picky one year old. We just use less spice for her baby mouth lol. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this gem with the world💜
This is one of the best recipes I’ve found since becoming a vegetarian. Very easy to make, I’ve found if I use 200g of red lentils & a bit more stock I can get 6 good meals from this. Our freezer is always stocked with batch containers & it saves a lot of money on take out curry we used to buy every weekend. Well done 👍🏼
Okay so I literally never comment on videos, but I couldn’t resist this time cause THIS STUFF IS AMAZING!! I was hesitant cause I didn’t want to get my hopes up by all the positive comments but THEY WERENT LYING! 🥺 I let my colleague try this dish (she’s Indian, I’m Spanish/Dominican) and she was sold. Told me it tasted like her moms curry.. that was the biggest compliment my cooking ever got 😜 Today I ate it again with fresh lime juice and fresh cilantro and let me tell you that finishes everything to the max! 😍 Thankyouuu for this wonderful recipe! ♥️
This couldn’t have come at a better time! Was going to eat out due to not having much in the house to cook for dinner except I have all of these ingredients (minus the pepper lol). Can’t wait to try this recipe 😋
This was a game changer for me. It was easy to make and was better than any Indian restaurant food I've ever had. No exaggeration! I keep marveling at the fact that "I made it," and I'm not great in the kitchen. Nisha, thanks for this! I'll be ordering your cookbook!
I just made this for my daughter....14 years old and adores Indian and heavy spice! She adores this curry! I added curry leaves and minced onion but otherwise stuck completely to the recipe. I cook for other families also and will add this to my rotation with them! Awesome.
Just made this last night and WOW! The smells the flavor and how simple this was blew my mind. I am new to a plant based life and this so far is one of my favorites!
New subscriber here... Followed this recipe and it is absolutely delicious!! My daughter loves curry and cauliflower. So I sprinkled some flowerets with curry and oven roasted them. Then I tossed them into the lentils towards the end. She proudly showed her clean plate.
I made this again last night and it's soooo yummy. I do always add a large finely chopped onion and this time a grated courgette/zucchini as wel and used less liquid to compensate for the wetness of the courgette. It's a pretty forgiving recipe, I've made it with a jar of pasta sauce when I didn't have a tin of crushed tomatoes or passata, I've used really soft cream cheese when I didn't have coconut milk and so on. Coriander/cilantro tastes soapy to me so I use different green herbs instead. There are always containers of this curry in my freezer so I can have delicious meals really easily.
I made this last week, added tofo. Asked my boyfriend his opinion without context and he said next time I should just make the pieces of chicken larger, as butter chicken needs bigger chunks of meat. 😂Really an amazing recipe- I added the tofu and used light coconut milk.
Hii :) I have a question because of the tofu, have you just like idk threw it in there or have you baked it before or sth? Just curious because I have to admit that whenever I try to make tofu it comes out horrible..
@@sannanas5597 You can bet a large sum of money she prepared the tofu in advance. I'd bet she used an air fryer, too. Pro Home Cook has a video about three dishes he makes, and he air fried some tofu and they came out super crispy. Getting tofu right takes equipment, skill, and practice.
@@sannanas5597 If you want crispy tofu that also absorbs sauce, you can cut smoked tofu in little cubes, marinate them in a mix of sesame oil, fermented chilli sauce, a little shugar and soy- or fish sauce for a few minutes then put them and some flour in a bowl with a lid and shake them. If you have marinade left, add it to the tofu, add more flour if needed and shake again untill they are evenly coated. Then spread oil on a baking sheet and put the tofu on it. Bake in a preheated oven on 180°C for 30 to 40 minutes and turn the cubes over from time to time untill they are golden brown and crunchy, then add them to your sauce.
I would also like to emphasize how easy the cleanup was after this. Literally one chopping board, one knife, only two pans, and one plate+spoon per person. Make this if you're not into washing tons of dishes.
I cooked this at home! Very proud of myself, I had most of the ingredients and it turned out delicious. I didn’t have garam masala powder so I substituted with some nutmeg and cinnamon, and instead of almond butter I used peanut butter. Absolutely delicious and filling, savoury and spicy just how I like it. I am definitely going to try more recipes from you!
OMG! I made this for dinner for tonight and my family absolutely loved it. My whole family were all saying "mmmmmm" on the first bite. Thanks for sharing. I have subscribed to your channel 😍
This is the first proper meal I learned to cook myself, and I may never have to learn another. Every time I make it I’m still amazed by how good it is.
dhal/lensil curry was my first dish that i learnt to cook but then i kept on cooking newer dish including pasta and even meat curry( beef was the first meat curry i cooked)

I start most of my Sat morning looking through recipes to decide what I want to cook. This morning, after making your hummus from dried chickpeas for the first time, I decided to make the Red Lentil Curry on p. 231. I often use Hummus kind of like Sour Cream, to cool things off, so this seemed like a great pairing. Then I checked UA-cam for the heck of it, and here you are making it. Great minds, Nisha! Getting started on this right after I finish watching. Thanks once again!
Y’alllllll this was BOMB!! I followed the recipe to a tee (which I never do) and it was sooo incredible. I’ll be adding this to my rotation of meals. THANK YOU 😊
OMG - I just made this, it is seriously the best thing I ever made from a UA-cam video recipe. I traveled downtown to my local Indian/Asian markets to pick up some ingredients, including fresh turmeric, but I could have found almost everything at my local grocery store. Super easy to cook, almost foolproof! I can't stop eating it - it was supposed to last the week, it's never going to make it that long. I just watched the breakfast burrito video, that's next on my list!
I must have made this 100 times now, and it is delicious - on my rota every week, with leftovers to freeze. The only difference is that I use tahini instead of almond butter, which works great.
I normally don‘t come back and comment after I try a recipe from youtube. But THIS is other level of recipe. For sure one of the best things I ever cooked/ate. Thank you so much 🤍
I finally made it today! Tastes absolutely amazing. I was a bit cautious with the spices but turned out I could have added more, coconut milk softened it all. And I added peanut butter instead of almond butter, still great!
I made it for the second time last night (this time to share), and my roommates loved it! They're not vegan, but totally open to eating some plant-based meals. They said that I should make it every weekend!
Yeah so I’ve made this about 15 times in the last two months...my roommate has also learned your recipe and we trade off making it. You weren’t joking about this being the ONE dish that transcends! I’m craving it like!
All those kids that complained that your house smells like curry now are all "bougie" and "worldly" because they know of 1 curry restaurant that they pay way too much for.
You are a godsend. My girlfriend recently has been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease and been on a very strict vegan diet. I’ve been looking around for dinner ideas and can’t thank you enough for the help.
This is soooo forking truee!! Haha. And she is right, curry is waaay better thab dried out meatloaf. I remember those meatloaf nights, not in a positive way. Haha.
@@niksnik3140 sorry to heard about. Indian cuisine is not just chicken tikka masala, or lamb masala or paneer masala recipes. The daily meal millions of Indian eat is simple vegetarian food and it has always option of using clarified butter/ ghee or regular oil. The pulses normally eat is vegetarian without meat.
so i've already been making this for months but it's one of those recipes where you need to keep a batch of it in the fridge at all times, it's so delicious and comforting
I made this for dinner you and it was delicious!!! I did not use oil (for weight lose) I water sautéd everything. I did not have Serrano peppers so I used jalapeños out of my garden. I also added cauliflower! I will be making this again! Thank you for all the fun delicious recipes you post!
I just made this and i am absolutely blown away. I grew up in the UK so have had my fair share of curries. This is in the top 3 I've ever had. The lentils and coconut milk make the dish so creamy, the depth of flavors and the spice from the serrano peppers are perfect. I followed the recipe exactly. As a meat-eater, i did not miss the chicken i would usually have in a curry. The lentils provided such a fantastic texture that also helped thicken the sauce. WOW! Thank you!!!
This dish is absolutely incredible! I saw this video yesterday, subscribed and made the recipe today, it turned out so great! I used water for the liquid, jalapeños instead of the Serrano pepper and peanut butter instead of almond butter. I didn't have fresh cilantro on hand, but did have coriander powder. I can't wait to make it again in the future with fresh cilantro added like your recipe calls for. I made a single batch, but this will definitely be a frequent double batch recipe. Thank you for sharing this, I have already passed it along. I can't wait to explore your channel more and try out more of your recipes :)!
Hi Lisa, Thank you so much for your feedback and so happy you enjoyed this dish! I'm excited for you to try some more recipes and I appreciate you sharing the recipe :)
HOLY.
I’m so flattered to hear that! Thank you so much for sharing and so amazing to hear it was one of the best dishes you’ve eaten!
I will give it a try for sure
I made it tonight also and it's so good! And using ingredients that are cheap and that I mostly have in my pantry! This will definitely be becoming a regular!
GIIIRRLLL!! Tried it too! I AM OBSESSED can't stop talking about it. EVERYONE loved it even the toughest ones!!!!!!!
YES!! A trip to India years ago made me realise I could eat veg without even think about eating meat ever again.
I am with you there my friend !

● 1-2 serrano peppers, diced (adjust according to desired spice level)

The is the best vegan dish I’ve made so far! My husband repeatedly said, “This is so good. Thank you for making this!” Even my picky daughter was lured in and ate it up. I swapped a few items based on what I had in my pantry - paprika instead of chili powder, tahini instead of almond butter, and white balsamic vinegar instead of lemon juice - and it still turned out phenomenal. I can’t wait to recreate this using all of the original ingredients! Thank you for helping to make vegan dishes that are gobbled up by all!
Thank you for confirming with me that this recipe still tastes delicious with a few swapped ingredients!!

I know someone with Hashimoto's disease that experienced a miracle healing. Please contact me if you want to know more.

My gf made this for me and it is the most complex and delicious dish I have ever tasted and that she has ever made. We have made vegan currys before and let me tell you, not one pot has ever been licked clean like this one has. We ate every last bit of this and I think it lasted 3 meals for us!!
Tonight it is my turn to make it ☺️
I just hate when the smell sticks to the walls
Love that! Thanks for the feedback!
my gluten free made it for me too👁👄👁
The first time I cooked Armenian kufta I went crazy on it too! Tasted so good and clean and delicious. Another very tasty red lentil feature.
Thank you! My mom does something similar and always tells me to do the same. Do you think the flavor retains its potency over time?
Great tip.. Would you know what's an alternative way if you don't own a vitamax?
my mom grates both ginger and garlic and blends it and keeps in stock
The ginger cubes in freezer bags seem to keep the strong potent flavor for months. I usually do a couple pounds at a time.
I think the tricks is to use minimal water in the vitamix, freeze immediately and take it out of the ice cube trays right after freezing because it’s exposed to air and freezer burn if left in the trays for too long
If no vitamix, you could try a regular blender or food processor and see if it works. I’ve only tried a Vitamix though so I’m not sure.
Love this ginger hack. Thank you!
I made this for my mom a year ago and she still talks about it whenever we call
Being British and a curry lover I was excited to try this, I'm neither a veggie or Vegan but I do often try foods from these categories and my wife sticks mainly to veggie and sometimes vegan diets.
After dinner he said, “Call me down anytime you’re making her recipes.”

Hello Pretty
Didn’t think it would be this simple!
every kid was teased about something...kids are little shits! I'm German and we had some bizarre meals, and the kids mocked me for it too...
My house smells of beans and red chili and onions and warm tortillas!! Mmmmm
What's wrong with a home smelling like good food?
I'm a year late but this recipe is legit. I used substitutes for some of the ingredients and this curry still bangs (tastes delicious). Definitely in my cooking repertoire now.
I've made this three times in the last three weeks and we've just run out and I'm planning to get the coconut milk to make it again today. It's so so good.
Couldn’t sleep, so I decided to make this six in the morning. It was incredibly delicious! I also made the garlic nan bread and it was amazing. My family had this for breakfast haha

Hi Ian, that's awesome to hear! So glad you've been trying more plant based cooking and loved this recipe so much! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tip about adding some cashews. I really loved the crunchy texture.

RainbowPlantLife question for you: I notice you (and other UA-cam chefs) dice or mince your garlic rather than use a garlic press. I’m lazy and the garlic press seems a convenience, is there a practical difference? Should I avoid using the press?
@@jpe1 no difference at all.
Subhajit M good, because it’s certainly much more convenient, especially if I’m doing more than one clove (which I often am)
Made this today and it was beautiful, even my mum came to try some and ate it so quickly that I'm definitely making another batch tomorrow!

@@shitalkanitkar5995 ooh I didn't know about tomato rasam. Gastritis is a very sad thing for people who love to eat. When it's bad it means no sugar, no salt, no strong flavors and not anything that's hard to digest, so no lentals. Maybe one day I'll be able to try this recipy how it was meant to be :)
I have made this twice.. My husband loved it and said this was the best dish by far since we started going toward vegan/plant-based. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!!!
Woohoo that is such lovely feedback! I'm so happy you and your husband loved this recipe :)
The recipes of yours I've made so far have been so flavorful and amazing, they have definitely blown me away... I absolutely trust everything you make. Thanks for this new recipe to add to my rotation!! #yum
Hi Kristina, that's so nice to hear and I am so flattered that you love the flavors in my recipes!
That looks so good. I have just turned 50 and am planning to transit to a plant - based diet and this will no doubt be an early and enduring staple of my repetoire. I have just had a delicious stew but did not enjoy the chunks of beef. Even on a full stomach this makes me want to make this dish. Thank you for posting this and I'll be checking out the other recipes you have too. By the way, I appreciate your presentation - all the detail we need without dragging out the explanation or seeing you chop and grate EVERYTHING! Well done! You are helping people make the switch.
Good luck! :D
I have been a vegan for 52 years and I worked as a chef for 23 years. So believe me when I say that this dish is one of my favorite things I have made. The layer upon layer of spices and flavors make this something I will go back to over and over. Chef's kiss to you Nisha.
Anyone who said your house smelt like curry never knew how freakin delicious curry is and how lucky you were to have authentic yummy food 🤗
I let my colleague try this dish (she’s Indian, I’m Spanish/Dominican) and she was sold. Told me it tasted like her moms curry.. that was the biggest compliment my cooking ever got 😜
Today I ate it again with fresh lime juice and fresh cilantro and let me tell you that finishes everything to the max! 😍
Thankyouuu for this wonderful recipe! ♥️
This couldn’t have come at a better time! Was going to eat out due to not having much in the house to cook for dinner except I have all of these ingredients (minus the pepper lol). Can’t wait to try this recipe 😋
Oh that's lovely to hear! So happy the timing was perfect!
I am the vegan skeptic. I made this meal and converted myself. This was an incredible dish. I can't wait to make this again.
Absolutely the best curry I have ever made, thank you so much for this recipe! Layered, creamy, indulgent, filling... just 10/10
I made this last week, added tofo.
@@kiri23234 thank you so much i ll definitly try this!!!
I would also like to emphasize how easy the cleanup was after this. Literally one chopping board, one knife, only two pans, and one plate+spoon per person. Make this if you're not into washing tons of dishes.
Why are there two pans?
@@Welbru1 probably one for rice
My wife tried making this - so, so happy with the way it turned out! Great recipes!.
Just made this for my wife and MIL. It was a BIG hit! Delicious. Thanks!
THIS WAS SO GOOD. Made it for my family and everyone loved it so much.
Every time I make it I’m still amazed by how good it is.
dhal/lensil curry was my first dish that i learnt to cook
but then i kept on cooking newer dish including pasta and even meat curry( beef was the first meat curry i cooked)
Anyone going to talk about that editing in the spice bowl?! 😳
Haha I'm so happy you appreciated it!
Exactly! 👌👌
I'm sorry but what editing?
Seriously, that was next level!
@@bilirubinamys Each spice is surrounded by a white glow effect as the labels are shown.
Here's where it starts:
ua-cam.com/video/BHRyfEbhFFU/v-deo.html
I start most of my Sat morning looking through recipes to decide what I want to cook. This morning, after making your hummus from dried chickpeas for the first time, I decided to make the Red Lentil Curry on p. 231. I often use Hummus kind of like Sour Cream, to cool things off, so this seemed like a great pairing. Then I checked UA-cam for the heck of it, and here you are making it. Great minds, Nisha! Getting started on this right after I finish watching. Thanks once again!
What a coincidence! I'm so happy you made the instant pot version of this curry from my cookbook! Hope you'll enjoy the meal, Michelle :)
I love that almond butter tip! So unique and interesting. I am completely in love with curry and this recipe looks so simple and delicious
Yay, I'm so happy you love it! The almond butter really does add a unique note and a slight nuttiness that I adore!
How about peanut butter? I always have that
I just made it for Dinner. WOW! my fav new dish. I was never crazy about lentils until now. Thanks for the great recipe.
Ah. And I also put some soft boiled eggs on top
I made it for the second time last night (this time to share), and my roommates loved it! They're not vegan, but totally open to eating some plant-based meals. They said that I should make it every weekend!
Everyone pls try this recipe. I have digestive issues but this felt so wholesome and filling
It's one of the best curries I have ever had. I now make it about every 10 days. Thank you!
Yeah so I’ve made this about 15 times in the last two months...my roommate has also learned your recipe and we trade off making it. You weren’t joking about this being the ONE dish that transcends! I’m craving it like!
I have never had Indian food before, but I decided to give this a try this evening. So delicious!
Haha.
As a Mexican I second this when they talked about our cooking
@@niksnik3140 sorry to heard about. Indian cuisine is not just chicken tikka masala, or lamb masala or paneer masala recipes. The daily meal millions of Indian eat is simple vegetarian food and it has always option of using clarified butter/ ghee or regular oil. The pulses normally eat is vegetarian without meat.
@@robinslagle2293 How does one even dry out a meatloaf?
So easy to keep it nice and moist, just asking to be placed between rye.
so i've already been making this for months but it's one of those recipes where you need to keep a batch of it in the fridge at all times, it's so delicious and comforting
I made this for dinner you and it was delicious!!! I did not use oil (for weight lose) I water sautéd everything. I did not have Serrano peppers so I used jalapeños out of my garden. I also added cauliflower! I will be making this again! Thank you for all the fun delicious recipes you post!
Hi Kelley, thanks so much for sharing what you did differently and I’m glad it worked out well with your changes!
I tried this recipe yesterday and I think it's the best thing I ever made and I cook a lot! Thank you!
That's amazing! I am so glad to hear this was a hit!
OMG! I cannot believe how amazing this dish turned out, made it yesterday for today's lunch, but we ate the whole thing. :D Thank you so much!
Woohoo! I am so happy you loved this recipe :) thanks for sharing!
