此曲是一首簡單、節奏輕快的非洲民謠，宣告著獅子今晚的睡去，森林中的動物及鄰近的村民們得以暫時卸下緊張情緒享受這個夜晚。本曲最初由象徵合唱團（The Tokens）為了爭取唱片公司的合約以「Wimoweh」作為試錄帶的曲名，製作人大為青睞，採用後重新編曲並填入英文歌詞。1961年推出蟬聯告示排行榜三週，成為今日耳熟能詳的歌曲，陸陸續續改編成許多不同的版本。1998年迪士尼推出《獅子王》動畫續集《辛巴的榮耀》中即有此曲，且備受歡迎。2000在年滾石雜誌的專文批評中，這首膾炙人口小品的原創者所羅門‧林達（Solomon Linda）才為世人重新認識。林達是祖魯藝人，在南非種族隔離政策下一生潦倒，1939年錄製的《Mbube（祖魯語的「獅子」）》為本曲前身。
