The Monkeemobile is a modified Pontiac GTO that was designed and built by designer Dean Jeffries for The Monkees, a pop-rock band and television program. The car features a split two-piece windshield, a touring car convertible top, modified rear quarter panels and front fenders, exaggerated tail lamps, set of four bucket seats and an extra third row bench where there was originally a trunk, a rear-mounted parachute and a GTO emblem on the front grille.
The Monkeemobile had its origins in 1966 when Dean Jeffries was asked to design and build a car for a new TV show called The Monkees. Jeffries, under contract with Model Products Corporation (MPC) at the time, told CEO George Toteff about the project. A make of vehicle had not yet been chosen for the project. Toteff then told his friend Jim Wangers of these developments. Wangers was working with Pontiac promotion and advertising at the time and saw the show as a huge promotional opportunity for Pontiac. After making the deal, Jim Wangers supplied two base 389 4-barrel 1966 GTO convertibles with automatic transmissions to be converted into Monkeemobiles. MPC was in turn given exclusive rights to market a model kit of the Monkeemobile. They eventually sold over seven million copies of the kits.
Two cars were contracted, one for the television program and the other as a promotional car, for touring car shows around the United States. Both cars were built in the span of four weeks. The first version originally featured a 6-71 supercharger on the engine, a solid mounted rear axle (no springs) and extra rear end weight.[citation needed] This was to enable the car to "pop wheelies".[citation needed] Because the car had too much power and was difficult to drive,[citation needed] the original blower set up was removed and a dummy blower was fitted, over a stock Pontiac Tri-Power.[3] The second car was used as a touring car for auto shows and promotional events. Before its transformation into a Monkeemobile, the second car was first seen on TV as Major Nelson's GTO in I Dream of Jeannie.[citation needed] Both were used on The Monkees TV series, one during the first season and both throughout the second season.[2]
Several notable differences between the two cars exist, such as the size of the door logo and the styling of the fan belt cover and blower lines, which can be used to tell the difference between the two cars.
Loved the monkees one of my favorite after school tv shows. Never had the model kit. Hope to purchase it. Only one monkees alive now. Rip Davey, Peter and Mike.
It was originally broadcast as a prime time show and it got great ratings.
I saw this car in a car show back in 68. It was a big deal at the time. Davy Jones lived in central PA., toward the end of his life. The people said he was a true gentleman. He is missed. Cool kit.
One of my all time favorite TV Shows!!! 👍👍
Built one of the originals back in the 60's. Watching you do this one brought back some great memories. Nice work!
Unlike you I watch it the first time they showed it in the UK but never made this model the first time around but have built a couple of General Lee,s Ecto,s and Starskey and Hutch ,s Ford Torino, now I must get myself a couple so I can paint them both ways.
Loved that car as a gluebomber , got one now to build to perfection. Better music. Great video Chris keep em coming I'll keep watching.
YES! Thank You for starting by destroying the George Barris myth. I get sick of people arguing about it.
I missed out on getting the original release of the kit (60's). Saw them on the shelves one weekend by the time I came back the following weekend with my saved up allowance they were gone. Got the AMT Bluepriner release (80's), but I really like the box art, so I'll get this one and make one with and one without the top.
Chris. Love that you let us see the build process as well as the painting and how you tell 'em "BUILD IT FOR YOU".
I remember the Monkees. Was a cute show, and you did a good job on the car.
I always loved that car
I built this when I was a kid.
I thought I was really something.
I was sitting in the TV room watching the Monkees on TV while I was building their car.
Yeah I thought I was really something.
🤣🤣🤣
I subscribed to the official Monkees channel on YT
Wow it would be cool to take the front clip off that car and put it on the 68-69 GTO and have a cool.custom
build that car when I was a kid in the 60s..listen to their music on TV..
good memories..was even build other models .like your chanel. Greetings from Sweden..
Turned out amazing Chris! You nailed it again.
Very nicely done on the Monkee Mobile Chris!
Your Version of the Monkee's mobile came out nice Chris. I have heard 2 different stories of how Dean Jefferies built the car. The 1st is how you said, he stretched a GTO. The 2nd , he started out with a Pontiac Lemans station wagon. Being that there is more than one car , both stories may have merit to them.
I used to love watching that show as a child also and the group had some good songs too. I remember the car appearing during the opening credits for the show but I don't recall whether it appeared in any individual episodes. It's nice to see this kit back out again and that box art brings back memories of the show.
The cleanest kit I've known. You always nail the building kit. The attention to details is amazing. Thanks for sharing awesome work!
Thanks a bunch!
Again a great kit. Would have been nice if it they included Mike Mickey ,Peter and Davey figures.
Beautiful work as usual Chris
I like that you actually show how you paint and glue. Your detail work is great! Thank you.
Looks great Chris, now all you have to do is find the monsters coach from that TV show and the Black beauty from the Green hornet
TWO Munsters cars. The Munsters Koach and Grandpa's Drag-u-la casket dragster. Both were by Barris.
Future will not stop fogging in most cases. However, it makes wiping the fog away a snap.
Pure Fun!
HEY,HEY WE'RE THE MONKEYS. !!!🙈🙉🙊🐵🐵🐵🐵🐵🐵🐵🐒🐒🐒
Hey! Hey! It’s the Monkee Mobile! Nice job Chris looks fantastic! Thanks.
love it Chris, mighty fine job
You said the Monkeys was off the air before you were born . . . HAHAHA. I remember riding my bike home from school as fast as I could to watch the Monkeys but not re-runs! Then Get Smart and the Banana Splits was on! Thanks for the build video!
Built one of these for a buddy two years ago. Ancient kit. Decals were shot.
Excellent build. Considering how many times that kit has been released it looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.
This is a very nice build, loved the Monkee's as a child watched re-runs on Saturdays around 11am 12pm I remember laughing my butt off and I actually sang along with the show tune good memoeries..thanks for posting and sharing. for sure will try and get this kit.
Fan-bloody-tastic 👍🏻👌
Guess what I found? I was wandering through my local Dollar Store when I saw Mod Podge at a very good price. But a closer look revealed that it was Mod Podge matte finish. Like the regular glue it dries clear and, you can clean it up with a toothpick when it's dry. But if you don't, or can't reach it, it dries matte, so it doesn't leave any telltale reflection.
Cool!
The small Monkees decals are just right for a repainted Corgi diecast model.
Awesome always cool stuff always thanks 😎
Love the change in background music maybe very new video should get a remix.
the Black Beauty did have a 3 speed automatic with column shifter and looked badass but cool!
Far out and solid!
I built it when it first came out. Two of the best modeling dollars I ever spent. (I'm old)
Very cool
The last time I built this was the 90s Amt Blueprinter version
I now have a mint in box one from the mid 2000s
Nice to see the right Monkees decal for the door. I was so disappointed when I bought the last reissue and found the yellow non guitar shaped decal I never built it.
Nice work! 👍
When this kit came out, sometime in 60s , I got it, yep, I was building in the 60s, I painted mine with PactraRed water colors, in the metal tins it looked horrible, probably one of my first! I remember getting the DRAGONFIRE three wheeler too!!
Funny thing is, I built this in the '80's and now I'll be ordering it to build better again. Man I wish I still had most of those old ones no longer available. Especially the jJO HANN
Great build mate👍
Oh man such a cool kit!!! I actually have some Monkees albums and this would be really cool to display with my albums. I too remember watching reruns of the show on Nickelodeon every afternoon. I never realized that there were several differences in the tops and interiors of the Monkeemobile, but like you said, build the model how you want, it is your model to enjoy, still loving that philosophy. Very cool build!!! Hey hey we're the Monkees...
THANKS FOR POSTING almost as much fun as building it myself
Excellent video great content
It is truly a unique car.
Nice kit. I watched the show when it was in production. On a Black & white TV, at the time. Didn't have a color television until just a few weeks before the Apollo 11 Moon launch. The Monkees were/are one of my favorite groups at that time, along with the Breach Boys, and the Ventures. Gonna have to get that kit now, and build it. I knew from the start that the Monkee mobile is a Dean Jefferies custom car.
Catching the last train to Clarksville, had one in stash for log time now
Chris, I have an original kit & build ups and re issue kits ...was surprised to see Round 2 come out with an original art work box and detailed decal sheet ..nice build ..I will be buying this kit to add to my collection of kits that were issued. Happy modeling ! / T
Every band should have their own custom car. At least American bands anyway.
I have one of the re-issue kits, have not built it yet. It is a great video and keep up the great work.
just built one , great kit fun to build..
i love how you say, that you will get grief from people with your color choices! they would freak if they see the colors i do my cars LOL. i was booted from a FB group because my car wasn't the PROPER color to that make and model.......i painted Rommells Rod Lime green!!!
as you say....build for you!!
Sounds like they did you a favor, I wouldn't want to be around those kinds of people.🤠👍
@modelcars2978 oh yeah 100%
Love it looks fantastic
I have one that I bought already built a few years ago with the white top and interior...there were actually 2 versions one in white and the other with tan interior and top...gonna get new kit and do the tan version
Nice Showcar,but defintly weird music..😂
Iove the kit, have an orig, one and one from the early 90s, unbuilt. And an orig built. I always buy 2, 1 to build, one to put away. Thanks. Should have had the monkeys music for back ground. Just saying. Lol.
Looks great 👍
Really cool model
Nice job sir! Never bought the kit.
I had this kit back in 67..back then it was around $2.00..
Next time I want to monkey around in the garage - I'll build this kit instead - hey hey. So detailed, you can imagine the foolish four standing, sitting and falling down all around this car - they knew how to monkey around. Another fun build from the builder who keeps us guys happy. Thanks for the ride...
BTW - nice shout out to White Out.
The Logo did not appear on the car until season 2. The Logo was so large it filled the entire door, season 3 had a logo that was a little smaller.
Nice!
L I K E 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 💯 💥 💯 💥 💯 🤩 🤩 🤩 🤩
Chris, could there have been 2 cars? Tan top and interior a (movie) car and a white top and interior TV car ?
Yup, there were two cars made initially, Pontiac supplied the GTOs. I post it's history in the description so folks can read up on it. :)
Very nice job I really enjoyed the video 😊
My bench can't have too many lights, especially one that can MOVE to the position I need it.
Hey ! Hey !
Heck, I built that kit in 1967
Awesome as usual. How do you decide when to use gray, white, or black primer?
I’m showing my age with this comment, but the young man on the right side of hpiguy’s title page looks like a young Elvis Presley to me.
Too bad the band isn't represented in the kit, it would have been great
Sorry I don't get to watch all your videos. You do awesome work and what do you do with all of your models when done ?
Plus you can still see some of the origional series on You Tube.
You don't add the GTO decals?
They are on the fenders, in black, just like I point out.
Looks great love the vintage box art and instucton sheet what color red did you use
The trunk was removed ....not stretched
do you have or built the Imperial 1966 Crown Sedan (Hemi 440) used by the Green Hornet and called as Black Beauty? It was diven by Kato (Buce Lee)
Wednesday ? I must be in a different time zone.
Today is Saturday
The video was originally scheduled for a Wednesday build.
Now we may be in a parallel universe it may very well be Wednesday
Wait, its Wednesday???? 🤪
Hey Chris I'm new to modeling and was curious, do you need to prime your chrome before Black washing or accenting??
Too bad Fanhome can't do a one eighth scale Monkee mobile and Munsters Koach omfg I'd sign up for both!
I'd really go bananas for a 1/8th A Team van too.
How is that spray Revell paint? Seems a bit orange peely..
Today is burpleday
porn music?
Now how would you know that?!
MPC also released this same kit as "Sweat Hogs Dream Machine" from the T.V. show Welcome Back Kotter.
Even though there was never such a vehicle in the show. I think that release may have included figures of
some of the characters. They tried to get as much use out of the molds as possible !
Fonz.dream.rod.not.sweat.hogs...
@@kelvinwebber90 ....yes, I think you may be correct. Still same concept - no vehicle
of that sort appeared on the T.V. show.
wow this is gorgeous. i definitely wanna get one. it won't turn out this nice though lol
