- The Xbox Series X & Xbox Series S have had a very bad start to this generation being dramatically outsold by Sony's PlayStation 5 and even the Nintendo Switch even to this day with the gap only getting larger by the day. Thought it would be an interesting discussion to talk about the financial and overall market trends surrounding the sales surrounding the PS% vs Xbox Series X|S and try and identify what might be going wrong with Microsoft's approach to selling consoles or even driving gamepass ultimate subscriptions which have remained stagnant despite prolific launches likes Starfield & Forza Motorsport in the past months.

Thought it would be interesting to look at the overall sales and market trends surrounding the PS5 & Xbox Series X and try to figure out the degree to which the Xbox Console Brand is in such an obvious decline compared to the Xbox 360 and even the Xbox One. On top of that Gamepass Subscriptions have stagnated as Microsoft hasn't really been able to move the needle on the PC market to get them to mass adopt its "Netflix of games". If Starfield and the Activision Blizzard announcement didn't change things, what will?

Nah. PlayStation 5 has an absolutely shit assortment of real exclusives. The best games on the system are either multiplat, available on the PS4 or on PC as well. I guess the haptic controller is the most next-gen thing.
But make no mistake it's selling so well off the back of previous generations, not this one. In isolation, the PS5 does f all better than the Series X. They're very similar products.
PlayStation is heading down the Live-Service route with their IPs so this could give Xbox a niche to establish trust if they can release lots of good games from their IP catalogue.
Just off the top of my head:
Gears of War 6, Perfect Dark, Spyro, CoD BO1 Remaster, Elder Scrolls 6, Doom, Dishonoured, Transformers, Prototype 3, Fallout 5 etc.

Well let's see - I literally just cashed in some XBox reward points for Elden Ring, Hogwarts and Sonic Frontiers. I got these games for free, for doing some rewards for a few months. Now I can play them on the XBox. Do these not qualify as "good games"?

That's one of the reasons PlayStation is getting sued for billions of dollars, they have been paying to blackball Xbox outta games, one of the reasons I don't like them. PC players have the best of both worlds
Remember when Phil said that having good games won’t increase console sales? I think it goes to show that Microsoft doesn’t understand why people buy a console in the first place.
He meant that its important to recognise that an existing fanbase can only go so far and that you need to expand. Eg nintendo use to only be known for kiddy games but they got the older audience into the switch by having games like Skyrim ported to the machine as a way to say ''older people can play old games on the go, not just mario and zelda and mario kart''. And that strategy works because the third party ports of Doom, OuterWorlds, Assassins Creed, GTA, Red Dead Redemption, and Batman Arkham games are not children's games but done for older men that love the idea of seeing portable titles on small screens. (Borderlands 3 port was generally received positively - sacrificed texture details and effect but the gameply is intact)
This may not matter to YOU but nintendo expanded into retro gaming for older audience while also making their first party games like Zelda and Metroid sequels. This means they don't just appeal to kids whose parents buy their games for them anymore as in the past. (this was a stigma they could not shake off) Microsoft is also going through a change where they want to expand not just to the core gamers who buy Elden Ring and Resident Evil. But to younger casual gamers who just want to play minecraft, Fortnite, Ori etc.
It's about balance. If you just make games for a niche audience you let sony grab those people away. MS has to both cater to the core audience (the kid buying call of duty and EA sports games every year) and while doing it, try to get fans of JRPG, survival games, and those who play on mobile phone to recognise them too. In fact many people who were anti nintendo of the past always thought nintendo should have quit hardware console biz and just go third party like Sega and then focus on just making mobile phone games only. That is until they saw how amazing the switch went. (they must look back at themselves and laugh at that now. But at the time it made so much sense since mobile phone games were thought to take over gaming and consoles would be phased out over mobile phones since kids all have phones! Thanks to nintendo and their exlcusive games, the switch is doing very well so no need to spread fear and doubt about the need for console machines as many buyers have spoken with their wallets and bought switchs for animal crossing, zelda etc.
MS needs to follow the path of nintendo: make those qualitry first party games to please the core gamers (us old timers who prefer to play from a box in the living room relxing on a couch with a big screen) while not ignoring the kids who are playing stuff on their phones. (these are the ones buying skins, microtransactions etc and their parents don't want to invest in a big box in the living room because their kids have their own tiny screen to play roblox and minecraft on it)
As I said expanding into the other market is necessary now. You can't just be a specialist that just does one thing well. You need to cater to all the areas not a niche in order to be competitive. MS is appealing to the guy on a tighter budget and fans of the western RPG games (you can tell because Star field is exclusive to xbox when they don't have to do that. They could allow PS to have a port just like how minecraft is on every device known to man) They clearly know how important it is to please that core gamer and niche, but not limiting themselves to just the audience of hardcore gamers who buy Elden Ring, Cyber Punk, Witcher and Monster Hunter and Forza. They have to be present on ALL fronts since cloud gaming may be the most common trend of future gamers who don't see a need to own hardware.
Ttoday you can find a browser, go online to play old retro games of the past from the browser and the emulator autoloads into memory to let you play classics of the past (Outrun, Double Dragon, King of Fighters, Ultima 6 etc.. decades of retro gaming from all platforms of the past) ...WITHOUT a need to own the hardware. MS knows that at some point, this might be the main way people choose to play their games if it's as hassle-free as that because technology is leap-frogging. They are thinking decades ahead) Sure it might seem like a gimmick to play Xbox games from a non-xbox console, but that might be the normal method to do things because a lot of people grew up doing this. So we older guy need to stop thinking the way we grew up to play games is the only way it ought to be. No, if my house burns down and my playstation and xbox is destroyed I should be able to still play Elder Scrolls off my other devices without crying about the hardware being gone.
It is thanks to emulators that we can still play old games through a common web browers and relive our memories of the past. Whether I am playing Final Fight on switch or from a web brower from a laptop should not matter because the old machines were so low tech that it should available on anything. This is MS vision of the future but for current gen games not just retro stuff. The tech is there for you to not own a console but still play the next final fantasy, street fighter, or Resident Evil because we are at a point where it might not matter what platform you play from. (just as switch can handle all those old xbox 360 games from decade ago at modest framerates - people who missed out on the arkham games can enjoy old classic from the ps3 and xbox 360 days and it doesn't matter that these games were not originally built for nintendo machines - the desire is there to experience them on a modern platform it was never intended to run on. Why does it matter what brand of console you run it from when the game itself not sucking should be the focus?)

i think you might be right, sony might be selling hardware but the profit margin on the hardware isnt high. The profit is on the software and sony is bombing on that. Their game sales arent hitting projected targets, thats why they are cutting costs where their first party studios are laying off staff left right and centre
Xbox sucks so much at marketing, it is virtually non existant in Europe while you see PS ads everywhere. People don't even know you can play FIFA or Call of Duty on Xbox most likely.

Marketing has nothing to do with it, Xbox360 will destroy the Xbox One, the Xbox One X and the series all without marketing, just make games that gamers find interesting and the complete gamepass .
In Poland Sony has 95% of marketshare. It is even difficult to get physical games for xbox there. Xbox One disaster give a big hit Xbox brand and they need lot of work to rebuild reputation.

I think console gaming itself is declining. The state of modern gaming is proof of that.
I think its intentional, they want to shift from physical gaming systems to cheap, and crappy “cloud gaming” systems where you as a consumer have absolutely no agency and are effectively a feudal serf playing on a peasant hut paying a tithe to your feudal Lord for right live and work on said land.

It could be the case, but very unlikely. I’ve always played competitive games on PC, such as StarCraft, Dota, CS, and Apex but it’s because that’s what I grew up with, but later on in life, I enjoyed a lot of consoles, even including Wii U. Just grabbed Xbox from BB for sales, super excited about it, despite i built a 4090 with a 44 inches 244hz screen just last month, gaming on console on tv, while being relaxed on a couch it’s just hard to be replaced.

I think the way Xbox could fix their drop in console sales is by becoming the "cool console" again. They pulled it off perfectly during the 360 gen and kind of pulled it off during the Xbox 1 gen (they were just held back by poor decisions like the connect), but the way you do this is by having the first party games you release on your console be "cool games". We need the Halo 3s, Gears of War, Mass Effects etc. of the Xbox series X|S generation. These legendary titles that make the consoles worth buying.
Also bring back the "Blades" UI
DEI basically means we will never get cool games made in the west again. Look at MS's e3 conference this year for evidence.

Xbox has over 23 studios and ABK. They have a lot of IPs to do that with, and I honestly think they don't need third-party exclusives to be "the cool console." They just need to get their management set straight.

Microsoft lost a lot of groups of people, how small you think they may not be:
- During XONE release, they lost a lot of the regions, because XONE released with year delay in some of them, lot of these people stopped caring about xbox at that point if they got treated as second class citizens.
- They lose people who like physical media, none of their games come on disc, and some games that are on disc, are inferior XONE versions that still need online download.
- They lose people who would buy their console just to play exclusives - because they release games also on PC - this is small market, but still a market that sony has better plan for - releasing games first on console, and after few months on PC to profit more.
- And finally they lose people who want good games, because even their flagship titles like Halo Infinite and Forza Motorsport, were released in tragic state.
I don't get it, why can't ppl shut up about physical? like where do you see physical anywhere else? music? software? Digital won that war, get on with the times already. with 200gb+ discs can't keep up and extremely slow.

@@Fraxzor i'm sure it's about ownership, reselling and preservation...all valid points mind you....but the solution isn't to insist on physical, it's to change the rules with digital media.
People like to stay in the same eco system and the obvious transition from ps4 is to ps5. All Sony had to do is get more right than wrong. All Xbox can do is get in early with the next gen machine with some killer exclusive games at launch which they could do with the the recent game developer acquisitions.

We need to define ownership in a new way suitable for the digital world....for example, we should be able to download a game we own anywhere it's available at no additional fees....we should be able to access games should their studios go out of business... and we also need to define who owns games or media if the OG quit...etc..
If we did that we wouldn't need to worry about some consoles or discs from 1980 or whatever.
I’ve been enjoying my series X since I got it. Don’t care if it outsells the PS5. I just wanted a cheap(relatively) option to play 3rd party AAA games with lower risk of shitty optimization that plagues the PC space lately.
I love my Series X.

One thing to consider when comparing to Xbox One sales in 2016 October is that it was a high point shortly after releasing Xbox one s refreshed model which was much better and also there was more good will with the shift of the Xbox brand. There is still no refresh of Series X/S and they are losing momentum. What can change things around are great new games + refreshed models. Also it’s only normal for Xbox console lose ground when the messaging is play wherever you want, while Sony messaging is play only on PS5(for the most part right)

MS has so many different projects that are far more important in terms of global tech they really don't focus on something like gaming to where Sony bread and butter is the ps console so they gotta focus hard on PS
@@Shaker1000 I think they care but they view it as a small piece of their overall strategy, and they are looking at it in the long term. ALL gaming is going to be in the cloud eventually and sadly, they are looking ahead to that moment in time where consoles will become completely obsolete.

Console sales are meaningless when less than 1/3 buys the exclusives.
In PS5, the people willing to buy that exclusive slop is out numbered 1 to 4, and its going to get worst now that more PS5s were sold.
Xbox owns the game and franchise that is at the top of Playstation most sold and most played charts. When they are generating money from CoD, CoDM, Diablo, Diablo Immortals, Candy Crush, Gamepass, Xbox gamers, PS gamers and yes PC gamers as well: it's pretty dumb to think they are in any kind of trouble.

Instead of coming up with excuses for us to waste our money, they need to finally GIVE us a reason to waste our money.
As a Series X owner I think the main thing they need is consistency in quality of their exclusives as well as a steady release schedule over a 2-3 year period. Much easier said than done but under more competent leadership / management and with the IP’s they have access to Xbox can absolutely sell more than they actually are. I also feel management need to be more aggressive and not as laid back as they seem to be, launches like Redfall can’t happen again for a while.
It's so weird, cause you can watch one video by Griffin who says "Xbox is dying and not selling anything" and then another video of somebody else saying "Xbox is doing great and making bucket loads of money".
Especially when the report is mostly coming from Europe which lronically the same place that fought Microsoft against the ABK deal.
The console is not selling well but the company is still making good money.
Their priority is on the future of gaming the cloud market and streaming.

The problem with that is that the world is nowhere near ready for cloud gaming to become the prevalent way to play games. Most people don’t have a fast enough WiFi connection with high enough data limits to sustain regular cloud streaming, especially at higher resolutions. We’re still a decade away at least from cloud gaming becoming big.
Sure, there are some people that have gotten behind cloud gaming, but even those people recognize that they can’t play games that rely on response time because cloud gaming tech simply isn’t good enough yet. Playing a game like COD or Forza via streaming would objectively put you at an enormous disadvantage

I honestly think this shouldn’t be a concern for them. They have to do the work now. They have a brand recognition issue. Not a direction problem, or a game problem. They need to work on marketing, and brand recognition. Your example for Spider-Man was perfect. Some IPs are so powerful they market themselves. That needs to be their focus.
I think that isn't necessarily the case.
MS released Halo Infinite, a title that is their biggest/ premier IP. Then they released Starfield. Bethesda's first new IP in over 20 years.
Those should have been hallmark moments, but, Halo Infinite released with very little content and it's campaign was sub par. Starfield released to mixed reception and was generally underwhelming for what it was hyped up to be.
Their brand simply has diminished considerably over the last 10-12 years. Most of it being due to their lack of focus on the core gamer, and what they actually wanted. KINECT, TV integration of the X1 and the increased focus on GaaS titles with cartoony aesthetics actually pushed their core away.
The hype for AVOWED was incredibly high after it's initial hyper realistic teaser, they then showcased gameplay with a clearly changed art style to a more cartoony look and the hype fell off a cliff.
We don't know who MS is trying to cater to. They're coming off more like a 3rd party publisher with a diverse portfolio who is just shoveling out titles to see what sticks. It isn't just GamePass that is the Netflix of gaming, Xbox has also become synonymous with that... And with that comes a lot of subpar content, with some gems here and there

I believe if Microsoft really put the effort into their 1st party games their numbers would be up. As an owner of all 3 systems I routinely use my Switch or PS 5. I use my X for GamePass especially games that are released Day 1 on it that I like for example Wo Long. X is not a bad system I just believe MS is not making it a priority like Sony and Nintendo. Buying all these top studios is not helping neither. 2024 looks promising for MS. We shall see

Idk for the millions of users who buy games and they get an controlled entry point in which they can monetize 100% of the sales on it.
I don't think spending $500 on a console for minute graphical upgrades, faster load times, and some lackluster new games is worth it...for either console. I'll wait until the next gen and see what it holds.
Only reason I got an X is because I wanted a UHD Blu Ray player otherwise I would have just stuck with my series S.

It’s only because Sony pushed the idea of “new new new” with their console while Microsoft settled with catering to their current audience which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it didn’t have anything new to bring to the table other than some flat upgrades to the hardware and that was it. Sony really marketed the console as completely brand new and a big leap from the PS4.
I was interested in a Series X, but it was not available at the time. And I didn‘t want to get Series S, since I was already used to 4K gaming with my Xbox One X and have a physical collection of games spanning all the way back to original Xbox games. So I didn‘t pick one up at launch. And I was really hyped for Starfield until they announced it gonna run at 30fps. They claim to have the most powerful hardware, yet games often seem to run just as good if not better on PS5. And next gen features such as Ray tracing often don’t even make it into console ports. I think Game Pass is not the big thing Microsoft wants it to be, because gaming is not like watching movies. You are not going to try out a new game every evening, because games require you to learn controls and gameplay mechanics. That‘s why people often stick with a few select games. Microsoft may say Xbox goes beyond consoles, but their PC app is abysmal: I was unable to uninstall the Halo Master Chief collection, which led to me resetting Windows. I have been avoiding PC Game Pass ever since. And I‘ve yet got to see somebody play Xbox games on a mobile phone. Lastly, cloud gaming is a pain, and only works under specific conditions. I tried it once with the NVidea shield, and it was laggy. So, yeah. I have the feeling that Microsoft put its eggs in all the wrong baskets. They acquired Activision Blizzard for 70 billion Dollars and I doubt they‘ll ever get to make that money back. So, yeah, I‘m not in a rush to get a new console, even though it is on sale for €400. I‘m looking forward to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - a PS5 exclusive
Starfield running at 30fps was a Bethesda option, not an Xbox option. Ray tracing quite literally sucks, to the point that in most PC games it's best to turn it off for better optimisation.
The tech is absolutely there for Microsoft, they just need great games (I liked starfield, but it's not a console seller. Nobody is going to buy a console *just* to play this game) but at the same time, if Microsoft made the next Doom/id software game completely exclusive to only Xbox (and maybe PC) a *lot* of people would be very unhappy. (Although that might stem from those games being pre established IPs)

Honestly, I think I've spent more time playing backwards compatible titles that have been enhanced on Series X than I have playing new games on the system, mostly because I find a lot of new releases have been disappointing, both first and third party. Starfield was fun, but wasnt anything special. Hi Fi Rush was great, but it's really short. Halo Infinite has received great updates lately, but the fact that it launched in the state it did made so many people drop the game and never look back. Redfall had a great concept, but its execution was really fucking bad in basically every area imaginable.
I think the console itself is great, but the issue lies in their game lineup.

Game pass has 25 million users in 2022 and same time in 2023 they reported over 30 million users so that is 5 million in growth so that seems like a big increase but maybe I’m missing something where your saying it’s stagnant

They might not be dying, I just think this is further proof that Microsoft doesn’t care about the overall console side of the brand anymore. They’ve taken the mindset of “As long as we can have our hands in product, keep our shareholders happy, and take home the bag at the end of the day, we’re good” which as a business major that is a good mindset. As a gamer I hate it though because when I was a kid the Xbox 360 was the cool console compared to the PS3 or Wii. Now pretty much all my friends have migrated to PC (including myself) and just have consoles for ease of use and exclusive games (only reason I own a PS5 is exclusives/physical games).
I was one poor sod that bought into the xss to have a leg this gen, ended up being positively surprised by the retrocompatibility of both software and hardware + fps boost and upscaling of older titles + unrestricted modding for skyrim and fallout 4 (as far as creation kit goes). Ended up becoming a fallout 4 modder myself.
But yeah, any other enticing aspects about the platform are completwly absent to me. Im not a gamepass guy but I guess thats a good thing for those who enjoy this angle. Not my jam though.
I feel Xbox does a poor job of promoting the 'fairly easy to play old gen games' aspect of their console - should be a legit selling point.
It can be argued the PS5 is doing exceptionally well considering the console was in production hell for the first 2 years of release. The next 3 years for PS5 should be interesting, especially with GTA6 on the horizon.

Xbox can have their own solution to Sony's Spider-Man and that's nab up the KOTOR Remake so they can also have a huge IP that a lot of people already have an attachment to and could interest more people to get an Xbox.
The only reason I got a PS5 was for that KOTOR Remake, I sold my PS5 almost a year ago cause I'm planning the move from my Xbox to PC, but Xbox getting KOTOR could be just what they need.

The xbox one destroyed the brand. It will never fully recover from that launch. The xbox360 people moved to PS4 and they aren't coming back. That launch will be looked back on in history comparable to the Atari collapse. They should have shuttered the Xbox One, purchased Sega, and launched the Dreamcast 2 using a mixture of both companies hardware expertise.
I don´te think they're that concerned IMO. Yeah, it may suck for MS that their consolse is not selling that much, but they're more focused on selling Xbox as a PLATFORM. As long as their games well well and the Game pass subs stay high, it´ll be alright for them
On the game pass note I agree that it’s plateauing. I used to enjoy all these new or older games coming to it but now all the stuff coming to it is mid or just something I don’t have enough interest in to really download
I actually love game pass for this reason, there are alot of awesome games that I would genuinely never play. But since it doesn't cost me any extra I give stuff a try and discover some good games I likely wouldn't have

With GamesPass ultimate, it can stretch the life out of the Xbox One (my current console of choice) with the cloud streaming.
But Games Pass is on PC which means potential consumers drastically increase (any windows 10 or 11 PC) yet they are not converting them.
So I would agree, marketing and branding are their biggest problem.

I would also include the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally (since its basically a steam deck) to the charts. Because my next console will most likely be a Steam Deck (or something like it). I bought the Switch because it was a mobile console, the PS5 because of their titles (GoW, Horizon, etc.) but since these Titles will make their way on Steam with a 2-3 years delay, I don't see the point of owning any other console.
It doesn't really matter as the funny part is despite Sony spanking MS in console sales Sony's console division has been suffering in terms of revenue. It's why they've been going all-in on games as a service, though I'd argue that's going to make the revenue problem much worse for them in the future.
And this is exaclty why i switched to pc during covid ngl best decision i made when it came to getting a new system also, ended up saving quite a bit of money not paying for live subscription anymore and modding communites have been poping off recently.
Economically, PC is difficult to get into, but its a long term investment. You ultimately save more money even if you have to dip deep on the first buy for your rig. Once you got a rig, you can save more and still have utility in your PC.
@@convergence1point I mean nowadays I wouldn't really say it's as hard as It used to be to get in to with stuff like the steam deck I mean hell back during covid you could've got a decent gaming laptop for relative prices as the resold PS5s. Even though you couldn't upgrade it, you would've at least had a decent experience long enough for you to actually start being able to invest in actually getting one, or you could've used that money to start building it as you really don't even need "heavy" hardware to run most games in the first place like hell aren't the 20 series still fine to work with albeit the limitations of using one.
@@convergence1point That depends on what type of gaming you want to do. If you're interested in the latest releases, 4K, ultra settings then yeah it's super expensive but if you only buy some AAA games, spend more on middleware/indies, like to use emulators and you do not care about graphical settings, you can get something very decent for as low as 800 bucks. My entire Steam and GOG libraries can be played from my 800 euro PC but instead of 4K it's 1080p though for some less demanding games I can use upscaling features to reach a fake 4K.

XBox has an identity issue for sure. The fall out from the Kinect really killed off most of the audience they built with the 360. What Microsoft needs is both better games and titles that are going to bring in people. I don't know if they can do that. The games they are putting out are DEI slop and aren't going to bring in the dudebros who bought a console. CoD should help but MW3 was kind of a miss so who knows. I honestly don't see Microsoft turning it around anytime soon. More likely they sell off the whole division.
A big issue with a lot of xbox games is that they come out either underwhelming or unfinished. Then they patch and fix the game over months/years, and the games become pretty good.
The problem is that this is so consistent to where people have the overall opinion that xbox releases sub-par quality games, which is definitely the case. Halo Infinite was released poorly, but now it's pretty good. Same with Sea of Thieves.
Though they really need to figure out how to release good to great games on launch. Not a year or two later after a bunch of patches.

Xbox doesn't care about game quality -- they're striving to become a big enough service to exit the hardware and game development markets altogether, and make passive income off other companies' games. Less than 10 years from now, Game Pass will be on PlayStation 6, PCs, and phones. If you're super casual and just want bargain bin games on the cheap, you'll get Game Pass on your phone. If you want actual good games and can't afford a PC, you'll get a PlayStation 6. And if you just want Mario, you'll get a Nintendo Switch 2. It's that simple. There is not even room for physical Xbox hardware in this equation, and Microsoft knows that.
If Xbox didn't care about quality their exclusives wouldn't blow way PS exclusives and their consoles wouldn't have destroyed PS consoles in graphical capibikoty since day 1.

I honestly don't think they are at all fazed by this. Obviously I don't know myself but it feels like there is something going on with Microsoft and the company is too much of a powerhouse to let these slide to a detrimental state. They also wouldn't be buying up companies like Activision and Bethesda if they didn't have a future plan.
One thing they do need to focus on is console seller titles, the creative indie games are great and in my mind more enjoyable to the AAA stuff but no ones paying $500 for HiFi Rush or Pentiment.
I'm actually shocked honestly. There hasn't been a real reason to choose PS5 over a Series X - the exclusives are not that compelling and they are not coming at the rate they used to be last generation. On top of this, there's so much anti-consumer crap and dishonesty coming out of Sony that the real surprise for me is that people still go with Sony knowing how awful they are. Microsoft is definitely trying a lot harder to earn your business compared to Sony.
Exclusives on either side have been horrible. The only 2 noteworthy ones are Hi-Fi Rush and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. Fun and gameplay focused single player games. Both SpiderMid StarMid on the other hand were painful. Now when it comes to actual differences, the PS5 still has an advantage for niche Japanese games (not as much as the PS4 era though) and Xbox has... Gamepass.
It has reached a point where they're almost the same so why not go with the console you have been building your library with? PS4 users obviously will pick the PS5 not to lose their games and Xbox One players will flock to the Series X... unless they just played off Gamepass and don't own anything.

I feel they are making changes but, most have stopped caring and the metrics you show, display that. However a turn around is always a possibility when companies can find what we're emotional about. For instance, a dedicated mobile better than the portal would be cool and of course less powerful than a steam deck, but it would be an upgrade on some front for them. And it would enter them in competition with the switch. If it has cellular service, even cooler.

I need to say this, I never owned an XB One or Series Console to fully know this, but when I learned how they kept their hardware as always Online to just work, I was really worried about what could happen to anyone who owns these systems and ends up not being able to use if Microsoft had to close its servers. Learning more about this, as I'm all for preservation and being able to mod consoles, this is genuinely frustrating to me and managed to make me hate Xbox as much as every other company nowadays. Thankfully, aside from OG Xbox and 360, which have emulation, we won't really need one for One and Series as it's all on PC already, well the big majority at least.

One thing to consider is how many console sales have xbox lost due to gamepass being avaliable on everything. For example I got gamepass free with my phone contract and I played their exclusives on pc via gamepass.
This is not surprising considering how Microsoft hasn't had many good first party titles since the Series X|S launch. However despite that gamepass is still making tons of money so its clear where there priorities are right now.

Xbox had massive layoffs last year, as well as a 19 month drought of titles due to delays. They also DON'T have a roadmap.
MS fired 16K employees in 2 rounds of layoffs, including 23% of 343's staff including studio heads like Bonnie Ross (much more than BUNGIE). Some at Bethesda also lost their jobs with Microsoft citing redundancies. The Initiative lost over 50% of its staff, who actively quit, including Brian Intihar who went on to direct Spider-Man 2 . This turned them from the supposed 1st quadruple-A studio to a support studio on their own game.
Crystal Dynamics just laid off 10% of their own staff, which doesn't bode well for Perfect Dark's development. Yet people were singing doom and gloom when Naughty Dog let go 25 contractors.
Lastly as I've said, Xbox doesn't have a roadmap. You have announced titles. Most of which were announced in 2019, and 2020 but still haven't released yet. Hellblade 2, Fable, Perfect Dark, Everwild, Avowed, Project Mara, and Stalker 2... Only Stalker 2 has a solid release window for Q1 2024, the rest you're speculating and hoping make 2024 barring any delays. That's NOT a roadmap.
Hellblade 2 was the first next generation game shown in 2019, and it will be shown 5 years in a row at different trade shows (each time showing a downgrade from what was originally shown).
This is why the brand is doing terribly. The fanbase has complete blinders on to the shortcomings of the brand, and the things that are going wrong with it. Yet They can hyper focus on everything going wrong with Sony, even if what's going wrong with Microsoft is much worse.
