YongYea's Kiryu Voice Acting is Almost as Pathetic as Him

- YongYea is one of my least favorite content creators in the gaming space and recently he has come under fire for his poor performance in Like a Dragon Gaiden (Yakuza 8) as the voice actor for Kiryu with new english dub scenes appearing online of Kiryu's English Karaoke & general cringe tier dialogue with just really bad voice acting. Not only his voice acting very bland and lifeless, but it just sounds like YongYea is reading a script in his normal voice like he would for any UA-cam video on his channel. On top of this he has gone nuclear on Twitter/X blocking anyone who criticizes his performance and hiding all replies on his tweets voiceing valid complaints or just making fun of the terrible voice acting. What's funny is YongYea made similar comments about Chris Pratt as Mario but now expects people to not do the same with him. Oh the hypocrisy...not like we haven't seen that with his deleted shill review of Cyberpunk 2077.

Yong can't blame EA or loot boxes for this dumpster fire
Omg. REALLY??? 😅
But it wouldn't hurt to blame them a little bit.. 😎
I just want to understand him. Filling the shoes of a character like Hiryu isn't easy and not everyone can do a baritone voice (dude wasn't even trying though). They could have fixed his singing by not autotuning him. He shouldn't have accepted the role. And now he acts like it's not his fault.

Acting-wise, the character he was playing seemed to be(originally) very stoic and even a bit gruff, while YY doesn't sound like neither when delivering his lines.

The Japanese actor who portrayed Kiryu all these years has it down to an art almost. Theres a Deep Smoothness to his voice, it's subtle but it sound slike he's trying to seduce you even though he's not talking to you. Yong is reading it like if he was in the position and not as Kiryu, no change in voice, no trying to lower his voice or pitch, just himself and nothing more.
The way he's voicing kiryu is like when a streamer do a yakuza gaming stream and read the dialogue in english because the game is in japanese
yup
Yeah every time I hear his dub I think "gee, this would be impressive if he was just reading the dialogue off the cuff on stream in an approximation of the Japanese voice work". But an actual voice acting gig shouldn't even be comparable to that...
He has the nerve to criticize chris pratt for his mario voice but did much worse and proceeds to block everyone who criticizes him, so soft.

Chris Pratt did a great job as Mario as well too.

To me he sounds like a typical average actor from anime dubs. He definitely has the voice for acting, you can hear it in his demo reel, but when it comes to Kiryu, the bar goes so high it's beyond him to reach it. To be honest, I don't know if anyone could without receiving negative feedback. Japanese VA is just that good and Kiryu himself is that much of an iconic character.

Yong is literally the " we have Kiryu at home" meme
Spacing after punctuation.
Bro listen to his voice he sounds like a robot
I can't believe SEGA hasn't announced any plans of fixing this. At the very least they should add a patch that gives us the option to just have Kiryu speak in Japanese while all the other characters speak English. This seems like a fair and easy compromise to me
Kiryu speak in Japanese?no
Just hire an English VA that fits Kiryu A lot
"I actually looked forward to drinking Soylent everyday"
The difference between Chris pratt and Yong Yea is Chris was Never Smug about his role. And he took the Criticism well even said it himself that he understands why. And in the end He did a nice job as Mario. While yongyea did the exact opposite.
Saw this vid in my recommended tab. I cannot get those 12 mins of life back. 🤦♂️
Yong doing Kyriu just sounds like Yong doing Yong, he just isn't suited for the role his voice isn't what anybody would expect.
Remember when Majima was actually Luke Skywalker ?
Yongyea and Jim Sterling need to become a rap duo
Jim stephen-yea sterling
Add Ben Shapiro. Have you heard him rap WAP?
Please no
We now have IRL Fake Kiryu
the transition to soylent was diabolical 😂
His voice highlights a general problem with a lot of current dub actors.
They dont act they just use their normal speaking voice.
I feel like very few actors have that "It" factor voicewise. Christopher Lloyd, Patrick Warburton, Jon H. Benjamin, Will Arnett, Chris Rock etc; they can just be a slightly more amped or whatever version of themselves and walk away paid. Very few others have this power, and they need to recognize this.
I mean tbf that's less the voice actor and more the voice director's decision
A lot of current popular voice actors have some great range, but either due to marketability thanks to their popularity or the role requiring it, the director tells them to just modify their normal voice a bit
-Kiryu, a veteran gangster ends his questioning with a simple, “Understood.”
-They translated it to “Thanks”.
Why do they do this?
I don't know Japanese except some words and i was like, wait a sec, Japanese use wakata as thanks too?
@@bisnu548 It’s really awkward when the characters are saying a straight forward joke in Japanese and it’s translated to a 2020 Internet meme or Western reference.
Eat your burgers, Apollo
Too masculine for NA weirdos
They've kind of always done that though. Ironically this drama made me pick the series back up and I was playing Yakuza 4 earlier and the voice actor very clearly says rape in English and the text translated it to delicate flower.
what's the name of song at the beggining? is it a yakuza song? nvm found it. TES V Skyrim Soundtrack - The Streets of Whiterun
Dude seems like he's got the integrity of wet toilet paper.
YongYea turned Yakuza back into Shenmue with that dub.
People may give Shenmue stick for English dub but its excellent voice work if you play them in Japanese like you should , just like Yakuza .
@@DavidSmith-bv8mvI'll think about it.
I fkn lol’d.
@@MacenWdunno why you play yakuza with en dub. You better just play GTA if you want en dub for game like that
@@DavidSmith-bv8mv if I remember right the English voice actors were directed to act in a similar way to the Japanese voice actors. Sega especially had a very distinct way of getting their English voice actors to sound, you can hear it in a lot of their games. It's a strange mix of a natural English tone and accent using Japanese intonation and syllable ryhthm, I find it really interesting personally. I believe there's an interview floating around with the announcer from Super Monkey Ball who mentions this multiple times.
I listen to Yong right now and instantly my criticisms is:
1. Doesn't emote properly, little, wrong or flat delivery
2. Speaks through the nose when he wishes to project his voice which is awful, lack of vocal training causes this
3. Punctuates improperly and the wrong parts. You can hear it with the Soylent drink ad the most
The problem is that this could have been all fixed easily by the director in the studio by telling him how to say things, just because you have a good voice doesn't a voice actor make.
His voice is plain and ordinary. He needs to start smokin and drinking hard liquor or something, because his boice sounds like your average western soyboy. :/ Not a harden Yakuza in his late years.
I'm curious how the sessions went when they heard his performance. It's like they didn't care, or someone within the recording studio was high. It's a triple A game, I know I can't expect the sharpest tools in the shed with recent gaming companies, but this is like someone hired him because they knew him, no care for who or how old his character was suppose to be.
Turns out good voice acting is 1) kinda hard and 2) a bit of a team effort (in terms of making sure the performance works for the wider project).
My brother's an actor and sometimes I think, "oh I can do that", so I put my 'performance' side-by-side with someone who's had training and multiple years of experience and I realize "damn, I suck. This is harder than it looks".
It's like singing or painting. It really does require education, experience, and plenty of retrospective fine-tuning to be anything more than an enthusiastic amateur.
Here's hoping Sega listens to the fans and hires a real actor to do the lines properly in a future update.
@@BoleDaPoleOR just embraces AI for the role, I bet it would NOT be any worse lol
What makes him unsympathetic is also the constant wearing of his own merch with his name on it. It's like that guy from South Park, who wears his own face on his shirt.
I just saw todays Yongs video about 2024 Square Enix letter about the company going hard on AI. Its very Ironic how he criticizes AI Voice Acting lol
Going out of his way to get a suit to look like Kiryu was major cringe. And having the balls to wear by the legend “Takaya Kuroda”. I bet Takaya was cringing inside as well.
Fangirl behavior
poor Takaya ... he had to be respectful for the front face haha
There's being passionate about playing an iconic character and wanting to express that, and then There's clearly letting the world know that this is your peak, you have no better thing to look forward to than this, that this is your zenith.
Guess which one Yong is
yeah if it was me i would like dress normal and like just dont get the role into my head but like it really feels cringe if you do it in the event in front of the og voice actors
@GriffinGaming >crying while staring through your eyebrows over fictional character voice
>fangirl behavior
LOL the lack of self awareness is sperg level, here's your Reddit gold, sir🪙 He may have gotten a suit for a character he's actually voicing, but aren't you the one who made a 22 minute video pissing and shitting over a fictional character's VO? At least he has a reason to be that invested in Kiryu, lol. Although going off your replies, it seems your Mom forgot to quit chainsmoking while you were in utero. I don't think it's a coincidence that every Yakuza fan seems to have fetal alcohol syndrome.
Yongyea: The Man Who Erased they/them Credibility.
Came in here to be pissed at what I assumed was some yong hater... Left being happy this guy showed me Young's true colors. Wow that's sad. I thought he was one of the good ones. Thank you man, really for bringing this into light.
He's literally just doing his own voice. There's no acting.
This is completely off topic but I wanna thank Griffin for helping me lose weight. I was on one of his streams almost a year ago and he was talking about how weight loss is actually pretty simple and that people over complicate it. It inspired me and as of today I have lost 30 pounds out of my 50 pound goal!
Keep it up man
Tell me how you did it. I'm also trying
Honestly could use some of that advice myself been struggling with my weight for as long as I can remember I’m not morbidly obese or anything like that thankfully but I admittedly am overweight by a good 80 pounds at least
caloric deficit and some consistency. simple as that.@@bisnu548
@MrLeerolljankins it's all about the food you eat and doing physical activity.
Whoever signed off on this casting owes their pinky to a Yakuza boss for making their organization look even worse
Like a Dragon Gaiden isn't yakuza 8, it's a spinoff. Gaiden (外伝) literally means side story/spin-off
I'm sorry but the Yakuza series never needed an English dub. I say this as someone who only speaks and understands English. You can learn to read subtitles, it's not hard. If infinite wealth isn't the end of the series then please, just have japanese with subtitles.
Unfortunately, this voice actor wasn't made in heaven 😢
He also somehow got a role in P3 remastered. I'd be careful if I were him, persona fans are savage beasts and a very vocal community.
Despise beign probably an idiot, he's a decent VA when given the right role.
With Kiryu he was Just severly miscasted.
@@lazzaroandrea2923all the struggling actors out there and some dipshit youtuber gets roles, I don’t care if he’s good or not tbh
@@lazzaroandrea2923I’m an actor, to me it sounds like his problem is that he’s not acting at all, but trying to emulate vocal inflections and nothing more. He’s way too performative instead of trying to actually embody the character. Also it’s clear how much younger he sounds than the Japanese voice actor.
@@thatperformer3879Acting in your mum’s basement doesn’t count as “acting” 🤣😭
It's funny cause the character he's doing in P3R is the most boring bland character in the game.
So he perfect for the role 😂
It's not just the bad acting, it's the lack of vocal processing, like it just sounds off and doesn't fit in the mix properly, also like he recorded it with his UA-cam setup and they just slapped it on at the end
"I GREW THICK SKIN" as he blocks anyone who says anything negatively about him.
Somehow he will blame microtransactions or Chris Pratt or Activision for this
He has the most robotic voice ever.
Can't listen to him for more than 30 seconds
Yong’s voice is not suited for Kiryu but just a regular npc or the final battle opponent in lost judgment Kaito files dlc
12:35 "I'm going to wait patiently and block anybody that gets involved with tearing down my ego because I'm the best and don't @ me cuz I will block you faster than Kiryu can drop a tiger"
I'm a huge Yakuza fan and I'm glad I don't play it with English voice 😅
Who the hell even plays Yakuza (love how almost no one calls it Like A Dragon, by the way) with Eng dub? Subs all the way! Even if the original text has been tampered with (like in quite a couple of VNs), at least I'll bleed only trough my eyes, not both eyes and ears!
Not like we had much of a choice in the first game. 😒
@@WickedParanoid The answer to both of those things is because the series is 17 years old and until 2023 was always called Yakuza and only just now started to correctly use its translated name (7 was still called Yakuza: Like a Dragon) and of course until said game which released in late 2020 was the first one since the original since 2006 to receive an English dub so most veterans all play with Japanese sub because 0 through 6 of the series has no dub option. I don't personally understand why you'd spend 7 games with the original dub then suddenly change to English in the 7th, it just doesn't make sense to me.
@@WickedParanoid7 and judgement's dub are amazing tho
@@ElainaMaruyama I mean the answer is simple- to reach a bigger audience. There are many people who just don't want to read sub, or simply can't due to disabilities. Having a dub mitigates that and reaches a bigger audience.
