I think the fascinating part about rhapsody is that this is part of the “emerald sword” saga. This saga spans like the first 4 or 5 albums. All the songs are linked and they tell a Tolkien level story. Very cool band to listen to.

Fun Fact: Sir Christopher Lee (Count Dracula, Francisco Scaramanga, Saruman, and Count Dooku, among other roles) was featured on numerous Rhapsody albums for narrative roles. He also brought his opera chops to the song "Magic Of The Wizard's Dream", recorded in English, Italian, French, and Spanish.

I love that, when you listen to Power and Symphonic Metal, for the first few seconds you look like you can't quite believe what you're listening to! You always look a little overwhelmed.
Rhapsody was actually one of the first symphonic metal bands I listened to (about 10 years ago) and emerald sword was my first rhapsody song. You really have to listen to the complete album to make sense of the lyrics though because they are all concept albums! I'm glad you enjoy them!
let's keep the sumphonic/power/prog going on! For "S" do Symphony X (Iconoclast, Serpent's Kiss, Dehumanized), Stratovarius (Black Diamond, The Kiss of Judas, Destiny, Infinity), Sonata Arctica (Full Moon, Replica, Destruction Preventer)
I think SA's Fool Moon is a straight up ballad, it never occurred to me to classify it as metal, more like old school Gary Moore :)

[S]- Sonata Arctica is a prog/power metal group with some of the best ballads that will make you cry from the sound alone, and then again when you actually go through and see the story these songs present

until Reckoning Night (which features some of their best songs in my opinion), I loved all of their albums, and I agree, their ballads are really beautiful there, but after that I like a few songs, but overall it's just not my glass of beer (or cup of tea, whatever :D)

I would also highly recommend "Last Drop Falls". In my opinion their most goosebumps-inducing song.

the lyrics tell of a story that is the whole album. every song is a part/chapter of the story. in that song the hero is on the quest to find the emerald sword to be able to defeat the villain.

So glad you chose them for R. Fun fact: the late and great Christopher Lee has sang for Rhapsody of Fire. He's done narrations for their epics, it's freaking awesome! Lee has done practically everything in his lifetime!
Also, their song Holy Thunderforce is a must listen.
Certainly the highlight of the late 90's Power Metal scene from Italy. This shit was my life back then, together with the Finish (Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica) and German scenes (Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, etc.). Power Metal was the shit when I was 17 and I still love it.

Rhapsody is one of those bands that never fails to be epic as fuck. After their split where they made two different bands, it was never the same, but they have like 10 albums that are just great with this line up of musicians. This is one of their more basic songs (their hit single type of songs). It's obviously fantastic, but they have some other more developed songs. Not more progressive, but just more complex in a way. They literally write their songs about their D&D sessions lol. Super geeky but awesome.
If you want to hear more, I would suggest the extended video version of "Unholy Warcry" (which features the great Christopher Lee AKA Saruman AKA Count Dooku). Christpher Lee also sings on their song "The Magic of the Wizard's Dream" (in english, italian, french or german). Other must listen songs that aren't their "hit single" types would be "Village of Dwarves", "Wizard's last mystical rhymes", Dargor, Shadow Lord of the Black Mountain", "Warrior of Ice". Or for a ballad you could check out "Wings of Destiny".

Your description of the feeling you get from Power and Symphonic metal at the end of this video was the best description I could have asked for. It shows you truly understand the reason why fans of Power and Symphonic metal are so passionate about them. Those and Folk metal are some of the best concerts you can ever go to, trust me!
I have to agree with the multiple people in the comments below, S = SABATON. My favorite band, and the band I love seeing live the most. If I can make a recommendation, it would be whatever you choose as the song... make it live. You won't regret it! personal recommendations: "Ghost Division" (they always open their shows with it), "To Hell And Back" (the most stand-out sounding song), or "Carolus Rex" (super powerful chorus). Keep being awesome!
1:16 right there, that's the same face I did the first time I've listened to my compatriots almost 20 years ago when they were called only Rhapsody! I suggest you to listen also to Labyrinth from Italy again and very underrated!

One of my favorite things about Rhapsody is that their songs tell a story, and I mean literally.
If you piece together some of their songs' lyrics you'll form a story of epic adventures throughout a kingdom to save it from the darkness that is overtaking it. Emerald Sword tells the part of the story where they journey to find a legendary sword that only the purest mightiest of warriors can wield

Latin and Italian words are very similar, obviously, since ancient Italian is basically the medieval "evolution" of the old Latin. In this case ("Gloria Perpetua"), unlike Ira Tenax or those "Dies Irae" lines from Reign Of Terror, they sound exactly the same.
Since this song was out in 1998 I was listening to it when I was one year in Australia, this was the song that got me hooked on to Rhapsody for life!!! 😁😅

i found Rhapsody way back at the end of 2003 in my first year of college where lime wire, and all that shit was around and i started to broaden my wold of music. That fateful day i came across Rhapsody and this song. To this very day the song and the band are my favorites. Favorite song of all time, and my favorite band of all time.

This band is a class of it's one. :) Check out the whole "Emerald Sword Story", their first 4 Albums, you won't be disappointed. It's a "Lord of the Rings" Metal Musical no one ever could recreate since then, just outstanding!
There's a GREAT live video version of this from a concert in Quebec, Canada. Its on UA-cam. Not sure if I ever saw an audience enjoying themselves so much!

They're better ways to be introduced to Symphony X. The epic songs, in my opinion, are a lot to take for the timer listener. I think Inferno or Of Sins and Shadows are much better options.

dragonforce and rhapsody are indeed both somewhat similiar but the Rhapsody songs written by Luca Turilli befor he left the band had that epic neo classical touch which gives me goosebumps all over
Gotta do Galneryus' Angel of Salvation. Symphonic metal--literally; parts of the song are based on Tchaikovsky's violin concerto. No better example of how well classical and metal work together.

I think that ghost division or night witches or resist and bite are more interesting for a first taste of sabaton.
Fun Fact: A Korean baseball team uses a verson of this as a hype song on homeruns etc, hearing an entire stadium sing it in korean is just so epic.

Woohoo, a Rhapsody reaction! I was so waiting for this as Power Metal is my favorite music (sub) genre and Rhapsody (of Fire) is absolutely fantastic. Emerald Sword is one of my favorite song of all time, ever since I first heard it I fell in love with the band and the style and never looked back. You may find it interesting - first albums of the Rhapsody form actually a story - a hero's journey, coming to power and a fight with a dark lord. Their style evolves too, it's a full journey - super fun!
For S I'd suggest Sabaton. Either Resist & Bite, Panzerkampf, To Hell And Back, The Lost Batallion, A Lifetime At War, The Art Of War, or Cliffs Of Gallipoli.
