    UA-cam needs more Rhapsody reaction.
An incredible band that, without doing anything 100% new, managed to have their own sound and influence many later bands. Unfortunately, they never played live with an orchestra, but for their albums they have used them (I think from the 2nd onwards). It is very common that on every album there is at least 1 song (usually the closing track) that lasts more than 10 minutes and is the most epic song on the album (literally close your eyes and see swords clashing with dragons flying in the sky in the background).
I recommend the songs "Symphony of enchanted lands", "Gargoyles, angels of darkness" and "The mystic prophecy of the Demonknight". Or, if you want to focus more on the singer's voice (Fabio Lione, not the current one), "Lamento Eroico" is a song they usually play almost always live.
Oh, and also in the official video of "The Magic of the Wizard's Dream", the legendary Sir Christopher Lee (Dracula, Saruman, Count Dooku) appears singing, as he collaborated as narrator in many of the band's albums.

Oh, and while I don't recall the musicians confirming it anywhere, both the drums on this album and the previous one are credited to "Thunderforce". It has been said that it was a way to credit the future drummer of the band, Alex Holzwarth, who for contractual reasons could not appear in the credits with his real name; but the most widespread theory is that in reality Thunderforce is not a real person but a program, and that's why the incredible precision in the songs (which in no way is a demerit to Holzwarth, an INCREDIBLE drummer).

Why have I never heard of this band? I really must get out more.🤪 I love symphonic metal, which is generally Northern Europe in its origins. This band however are Italian..the fever is spreading…thank God there is no known antidote. A little more emphasis on the orchestra content. However, the power is still evident and is not lost within the symphonic arrangement. Once again, we Earthlings have new music (at least for me) to enjoy. What an outstanding piece of music, and what a band. Sabina, an example here of not needing any visual reference…let the music do the talking, as per your reaction. 👏👏

To be fair, it might be technically the most important band in the history of the genre in terms of the sheer quantity, scale and intricacy of classical, opera, symphonic, film score, baroque, chamber music etc introduced into metal. Before them, bands just needed half a keyboard with string effects to be considered symphonic (to the extent that the term even existed), and then Rhapsody came and raised the bar. Already back in the day, the young members of Nightwish would say in interviews that they were listening to a lot of Rhapsody. Try listen to their discography, at least from Legendary tales (the first one) all the way to Into the legend (the last one with the original singer). Also the side project stuff by the main guitarist/composer is great, both the early stuff similar to Rhapsody (under the name Luca Turilli) and the later, more developed and ambitious stuff (under the names Luca Turilli's Rhapsody and Turilli/Lione Rhapsody). Career-wise, though quite famous, they've had the double disadvantage of not being female-fronted, therefore attracting less of the more pop-leaning fandom of female fronted symphonic bands, and of their lyrics bearing a non negligible amount of cheesiness due to their not being native nor proficient speakers (and to be fair, certain unironic fantasy lyrics were considered much more palatable in past decades, since heightened sensitivity to cheesiness still wasn't really a thing). Still, if you liked this one you might really enjoy their discography at large, give it a try!

@@GloriaVictisDiesIlla Thank you so much for the feedback. I will certainly take on board what you have suggested and make it a mission to explore the music you have suggested. Sadly, (or perhaps fortunately) I can recall various bands experimenting with either a string section or a small orchestra and hailing their achievement as ground breaking. For me it was a distraction. Today however, we are spoilt by the musical abilities of bands who truly are pioneers of symphonic metal. Long May it continue.

OMFG who ask to do that epic Rhapsody Song? This album that i like so much is like the underrated one (mabe because it's 5 songs for a 42 minutes album)! 🤩🤯😎🤘I think the fact that they are not bigger is only because the metal bands that sings about Dragons, Rage & Glory (generally in the Power Metal subgenres) is seen as cheesy. For myself even if now i prefer the Melodic Death Metal subgenres, i could never stop seeing Rhapsody like pure art. From there debuted to the contemporary albums, they really are master of there craft. It was in the first phase of my metalhead journey, this bring me back so much good memories. Thank you so much for this reaction!

I've known Rhapsody for a little more than a year now... They are BYFAR my favorite band ever! I actually believe the album this song you just reviewed is from is when the band started losing their UMPH and identity, for their music became more bland to me and the melodies started getting less narly. I'd be glad to see you create another reaction on the Dawn of Vicotry album-which has got to be their prime time album. Even their first album has mighty great songs that need to be uncovered by your reactions. Your reactions are pretty good lol and genuine

Those duelling guitar and syth solos are a thing of beauty aren't they? ^^ And to consider, this song is just the midpoint in the album.
As for why they're not bigger...I think it was just the music industry at the time. Even among other metal they were considered fairly niche. That said, this is just my own memories from around then then and hence anecdotal. Who knows, maybe all the metalheads you remember from back then loved Rhapsody? In which case I'm kind of jealous, but ah well.

Kudos great reaction! In regards to why they aren't bigger or more popular, I think a big reason in general is that people don't have the patience to listen to an epic like this where the structure of the song isn't as streamlined and easy to listen to. Imagine trying to sell a 14 minute song to a radio station lol RoF is very popular within its subgenre and the fanbase is borderline ravenous, but as for the general population I think you'd get more side eyes than head bops. Rock on and cheers!
