The Night Witches may not have been the most damaging unit but they certainly hurt morale. Imagine not being able to sleep because you could get bombed out of nowhere. In fact, every German Soldier that managed to down a Night Witches plane was awarded an Iron Cross.
The Witches took it as a compliment.

It was said that during 1942 - 1943 the silent wooshing of The Night Witches was what kept the Germans awake at night. The soldiers said it reminded them of childhood tales of witches hence the name. Love the song.

BACKSTORY: Scene is Spring of 1943, Georgy Zhukov has suffered his worst defeat of the war, the soviets have failed to relieve Stalingrad with Operation Winter Storm, and the Red Army just lost an estimated 90,000 troops in Kharkov. The situation for the Soviets seems desperate.
But in the skies, Major Yevdokia Bershanskaya leads the women of the 588th Night Bomber Regimen. Formed by Colonel Marina Raskova, this was one of three air regiments that was to employ females, and the only regiment to be all women, the first in the world to allow women such a dominant role in air warfare. Though initially ridiculed, handed almost no equipment and only old uniforms and told to make do, they became one of the most effective air units of history.
The 588th flew 30,000 missions over four years, dropping a total of 23,000 tons of ordinance on invading German armies. The girls--some were only 17, the oldest 26--flew almost exclusively at night because their planes were nothing but plywood and canvas. A single tracer round could ignite the frame. Flying these practice fighters, little more than crop-dusters, was extremely dangerous. After one mission Nadia Popova and her pilot Katya counted 42 bullet holes in her plane, not including those in her map and helmet.
Because of the weight of the bombs they carried and the low altitudes at which they flew, they carried no parachutes. They had no radar to navigate their paths through the night skies -- only maps and compasses. But flying low and slow and quiet had its advantages. Their light frames and slow speeds made the planes highly maneuverable compared to the Nazis, and their relative silence allowed the 588th a sort of stealth--they would idle their engines as they neared their targets, and glide their way to their bomb release points.
As a result of the soft "whoosh" that was the only sound preceding the bombs, the Nazis began calling the female fighter pilots Nachthexen: "night witches." Hated and feared for their ability to drop bombs with little more than the sound of a "witch's broom" to announce their presence, the Nazi's offered the reward of an Iron Cross to any pilot who could down a "Witch" The 588th wore the title "Night Witches" as a badge of honor.

So, for those of you that don't know.
"Night Witches" was a World War II German nickname for the female military aviators of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, of the Soviet Air Forces. Though women were initially barred from combat, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin issued an order on October 8, 1941 to deploy three women's air force units, including the 588th regiment. The regiment, formed by Major Marina Raskova and led by Major Yevdokiya Bershanskaya, was made up primarily of female volunteers in their late teens and early twenties.
Didn't 556 and 557 have women allowed as well but were soon alienated as more and more men joined
And they attacked during night aswell as turning of the engines and gliding in making them undetected
It wasn't made "primarily" of female volunteers, it was a female-only unit (russian wikipedia page has a complete roster, where you could see that even mechanics and equipment technicians were women), most of the volunteers for pilot positions were dropped due to high requirements of Raskova.
My favorite fact about them is that they have no MIAs due to the tour over battlefields after the war made by comissar on the funds by other members of the regiment to find and bury the bodies.
Also, as well as flighing at night, that particular ALL WOMAN regiment were given the worst planes with canvas wings and all the "old gear" that the men were to proud to touch. They would be up there in the dark, literally freezing their asses off with terrible, out dated (and probably quite dangerous) equipment. Yet they managed to carry out their assignments with an amazing amount of success. Because the wings were canvas they were eerily quiet, appearing from nowhere right on target and so suddenly the enemy wouldn't know they were there till it was too late. So even with all the men thinking they were going to be useless, frightened, squeamish girls with no real stomach for combat who were always going to be getting on the way of all of the "MEN'S" jobs of getting on with the war, AND the ridiculously dangerous equipment they still managed to show the men they were just as capable (if not more so) as the men when they preformed their duties to an extremely high level. I don't know if that endeared them to the men or if the men thought the women were making them look bad in some way, showing them up... probably a bit of both. But you gotta hand it to those ladies...i wont say they had balls of iron. But i WILL say they had enormous tits of steel! Well done ladies. More people should be made aware of things like this! Xxx
Also, they were given old bi planes that could be heard miles away so they would climb high, kill the engine, glide to the target, and restart the engine just after dropping the bombs. So you heard the bombers the moment their bombs making the bombers seem to appear out of nowhere like witches on brooms.

Yeah, right? I've been waiting for this for the longest time.
I've seen Sabaton three or four times now. Two years ago, I took my then seven-year-old daughter to her first ever concert which was Sabaton. She walked away from that concert super excited, and even got a drumstick! She saw them again with me in March of 2018. We were right up front. The energy is amazing and you can tell the band really loves what they do. They're awesome.

As a swede Im happy you finally got to Sabaton.
With the exception of their very first album all their songs are based on real events and people from history of wars and battles and they're also incredible live but when listening to their songs I highly recommend reading up on their songs first so you know what the song is about, it adds so much.

I would recommend The Price Of A Mile, especially the video released on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. That video might make your stomach turn a bit as it uses clips from several WW1 movies, but considering it was a tribute to a century after WW1, it was very fitting.

I've seen them three times. The crowd was crazy every time, & the first time was when they were supporting Nightwish.
@@TheNightOwl11683 I've only had the chance to see them once and they were opening for Trivium. That is when I first discovered them and it was the an amazing show. I even got their "set list" but it turns out it wasn't their set list. It was a piece of paper they had taped up on stage to make it seem like it was so all over it the paper it said swedish pagans.
@@MadelynR0826 I completely forgot about that tour with Trivium, mostly because Sabaton wore people out enough that people left before Trivium came on stage. To be fair, this was in Houston, TX in the summer in a venue that is infamous for its poor air conditioning. Even Sabaton felt like they were dying on the stage from the heat.
@@TheNightOwl11683 For me when they played it was in Orlando, Florida. They actually woke everyone up in the venue and got us so beyond pumped up not just for their set but for Trivium as well. The first band that played I didnt really enjoy all that much.
@@TheNightOwl11683 This brings back good memories when I saw them at the Battle of San Bernadino in California. Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Sabaton, Anthrax, Testament Warbringer and Overkill. What's not to love?!? People burning trash to create multiple circle pits and constantly passing joints around metalheads. I got to meet George Fisher (Corpsegrinder) from Cannibal Corpse (they didn't perform but hung out to enjoy the show), I'll never forget how humble he was! OH! Joakim also gave a kid his sunglasses which I thought was pretty neat! Sorry for rambling, it's just amazing how many metalheads came together that day

Man, Sabaton has so many good songs, they're really good at covering the theme (war) used in their songs, and many comments already suggested many good songs, but for me, The Final Solution is on another level. It covers one of the most tragic events in our history, and they did it perfectly.

Sabaton instantly became my favorite band a couple years ago. The band I never knew I was looking for.
The first time I saw they opened for Nightwish (first time seeing them too), and I loved their show. I wasn't too sure at first, but by the end of the show you can't help but love them. The lead singer is so cool. He was talking to the audience about how metal is for everyone. He pointed to an older couple in their 70's rockin' out, and a young girl up in the balcony who was 12. It was her first concert ever. "See! Metal is for everyone!" and he threw is aviator glasses to the little girl. Won over everyone's hearts.

Just seeing Sabaton's tour list its just blowing me mind. Every single day they are in all diff countries and cities and wow. Sabaton been everywhere and doesn't give up until everyone in the world knows their name! They Are Sabaton The Greatest Band in the world!
Nice thing about you doing this ABCs of metal thing is I'm getting to hear bands I haven't heard before, or songs from bands I have heard. Been a metalhead since my teens (going on 31 this year) and it's nice seeing others try it out.
Dude, I'm so happy that you finally got around to reacting to Sabaton. You definitely need to revisit the band and check out some of their other material. What makes Sabaton so unique is that almost all of their songs are inspired by real war stories to the final King of Sweden, and his domain. Absolutely phenomenal band on stage and off!
As for T is concerned, do yourself a favor and check out Therion - Son of the Staves of Time.

first found sabaton when seeing them live opening for nightwish in 2015 which i think was only their second time doing a show out here and I was blown away so i have been hooked ever since, seen em twice since that and they are hands down one of the best bands I've seen live so muh energy and the vibes from the crowd with everyoen singing along is the best. gonna see them every show they have out here

When I first listen to the band, I was mildly impressed with the lead singer's vocals. The vocals were very powerful enough to move you and get you excited. The intensity within each lyric and every single instrument being played is so wonderful and absolutely fantastic. This has been a very good song. Man two good songs back to back with Rhapsody of Fire's Emerald Sword and now Sabaton's Night Witches

Feb 21st, 2018: I finally got to witness Sabaton live at the Gothic Theatre in Denver, CO.
It was the most intense and amazing experience ever, not to mention Kreator played right before them.
Was my first concert ever and will hands down always be my favorite

More Sabaton please! Anything live from the 2012 Woodstock show in Poland. The entire show is gold but Metal Crue is favourite of mine along with Carolus Rex, 40:1, or Ghost Division.
Was that the concert where they performed 40:1 and the whole crowd suddenly burst into the Polish national anthem? There's a clip on UA-cam of that happening and I'm wondering if the concert you mentioned was the one it happened at.
