Best Fishing Line - Braid vs. Mono vs. Fluorocarbon

- When should you use mono? What about braided line or Fluorocarbon? Matt explains what each line is for, how to use it, and when to avoid it. We also discuss leader materials and how to tie connection knots.
This video goes in depth about all 3 fishing lines. We ignored copolymer for the sake of time as its really just an "in between" between fluorocarbon and monofilament. All of these different styles of line are important. Each one has a place and will increase your success while fishing. But use the wrong line for the wrong purpose and it will drive you insane! A perfect example that we forgot to cover in the video is that fluorocarbon sinks. Use it for topwater and it will drive you insane! But use it in ultra deep water and it will make it easier to keep bottom contact.
Below is a break down of the different lines that we use on a regular basis.
Braided Line...

Sufix 832: bit.ly/2ae93Ji
Monofilament...

Connection and Main Line Knots...
Blood Knot- This is my core knot for all connections between braid and mono or braid and fluoro. If connecting to fluorocarbon its CRITICAL that the knot is wet when cinching up or the fluoro will be burned.
Blood Knot Video: • Best Fishing Knots for...
Nail Knot- This is an extremely strong connection knot but requires an extra tool or straw to tie it effectively on the water.
Palomar: This is by far the most "universal" knot in all of bass fishing for tying on a variety of baits and lures. Use it for any application up to 30 lb line, but never over 30 lb or you'll risk line slip.
San Diego Jam: This knot was designed for heavy line but has proven itself as a great option all the way down to 12 lb line. However, if you are using lines of 30 lbs or heavier, this is the ONLY knot I would consider using. There is no slip, its a clean knot, easy to tie, and you can see if its tied correctly before fishing with it.
Our line applications...
Finesse in crystal clear water: 10 lb braid (use 15 lb if on a low end reel) to 5-8 lb fluoro
Finesse in clean water: 10 lb braid to 6-10 lb mono
Texas Rigs: 40 lb braid to 12-17 lb mono
Finesse Jigs: 30 lb braid to 10-15 lb mono or 12-15 lb fluoro
Jig Fishing: 50 lb braid to 15-20 lb mono
Crankbait option 1: 12 lb fluorocarbon (Assassin)
Crankbait option 2: 20 lb Braid (Sufix 832) to 12 lb mono
Swimbait: 80 lb braid to 30 lb mono
punching: 65 lb braid (no leader)
Frogging: 50-65 lb braid (No leader)
Jerkbait option 1: 20 lb braid to 10 lb mono leader
Jerkbait option 2: 12 lb fluorocarbon
Shaky Head: 30 lb braid to 10 lb mono

I actually wish you would have went longer with this video. This is one of the most important topics there is in fishing. I've been waiting for this for a while. Good stuff
LTZ 863 exactly!
I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
I love these long videos man, you're so good with lecturing. I get so excited when I see a 20+ min video get posted from you guys. Stay safe Tim and thank you to all law enforcement/first responders out there who don't falter in the face of danger
Thanks for the video, I switched to fluorocarbon from mono. I was breaking knots when I had no problem on mono. This video helped understand a possibility.
Not sure if anyone else watched that 20/20 show on the fires, but could Tim is a true hero. He had saved the lives of those in danger of the fires. Please make a video updating us on this! Great job on the channel, you guys are just more than knowledgeable fishermen!
This video is a sign from God. I was just struggling with this topic this week. Thank you for the video! God bless you guys!
Colton Owens Same here brother!!!
Not sure that god sent you here.......
Why these guys don't have a million subs blows my mind. The way they lay everything out for you, every little detail they go over to make us better fisherman. I could listen to them teach about fishing all day! Stay safe out there guys and hoping you and your families can return home soon. Much love.
Matt been fishing tournaments for over 40 years and that was one of the most informative videos on fishing line. I truly appreciate all the information, thank you !!
I know this vid is old but it's Never too late to appreciate fine folks like Tim who run towards emergencies most of us would run From. Cheers and thanks Tim and his ilk!
Dude, I am so thankful for your frankness. I have been fishing for nearly 40 years and really appriciate folks who are real and don't hold back their thoughts. I too am really about finding the right line for the right applications and feel compelled to share those experiences with others. Keep on being you and being open with passing on what works for you! Good luck and tight lines...
Great video as usual.Just saw Tim Little on 20/20 helping people in the devastating wildfires out West .Hope and pray everyone gets out safely.Thank you for what you do.
Thanks Matt ,I transitioned from the Alberto knot to your blood knot for leader connections..and I'll never go back when you tie it right it's just right 100% confidence in it. Thanks again
Sometimes I feel like the last guy on the planet who still uses mono... certainly the only guy who uses braid to mono leaders... and I've also caught my biggest fish on that setup! Thanks for spreading the word!
I went %100 Braided line recently. We have been fishing Rancho Murieta lakes and still crushing them even with the braided line. Sometimes the fish just don't care when they want to eat. I may try tying Leaders more often after watching this video. Great Info Guys! Stay Safe out there!
Gotta love Rancho! The leader will definitely get bit more unless you're in the grass, then they really dont care
Story... I have ALWAYS fished braid to mono for everything. Until last year I bought a spool of flouro to see what all the rage was about. 50lb braid to a 30lb flouro leader to a 7 inch prototype swimbait I made and had tested all winter. My first take from a giant (7lb fish are giants here in New England), I swung, and the knot to the leader failed. That was the first and only time I used flouro. Now I have some peace of mind as to why it happened. Great video guys!
So glad you stressed the value of using braid to mono. With the way the marketing has seemed geared against mono it's still around for a reason. That extra little snap from using the mono leader with braid seems to help so much with so many lures.
Wow this was a huge surprise to me. I personally always throw 20-40 lb power pro to a 12-20 lb flouro leader, depending on the application. I've tried Mono as a main line but, never a leader. Thanks for the tips Matt, tight lines!
@Filth Bag it's big for surf fisherman w different rigs & will set up their rig so if their hook snags only the leader/hook will be lost & not extra sinkers/setups. That's the general idea behind it even tho typical bass fisherman dont do it for this reason bc it's just main line, leader, then lure, only reason I can think of is to hopefully lose less line during breaks etc or to snap easier when snagged across the pond instead of potentially snapping my rod freeing lures w 30-60 braid or always having to cut & waste tons of line. Pontential breakage, visibility, whatever small reason justifies it to you, its just what fisherman have always done ig lol.
A very thorough description Matt. Good work. 25 minutes of important information.
THANKS. I appreciate your "rambling". Your education is the best, especially for newbies who need the extra detail (i.e. leader-specific fluoro is better than mono). Any updates, please let us know.
Thanks for sharing. Don't worry about going too long. We enjoy learning.
Here in the southeast it has been rain for 3 weeks straight with 2 more weeks in the forecast i think you guys need it more then us ! Thanks for the line education since moving south i have re-discovered my fishing passion! and your channel has sped up the learning curve ! ALSO Really appreciate all the time that goes into linking all the gear you use ! THIS CANNOT BE UNDERSTATED that probably takes longer then making the video HAHAHAHAH Thanks as always Matt
I am actually in NC not Florida wish i could but that is a little out my range LOL
hahahaha
Thank you! It really does take longer than the whole filming process :-)
Haha yea we really could use some rain here that's forsure!
I'm Literally over all this rain
Hi from the UK. You just anawered every question i ever had about line! Really simple, really easy to understand. No BS. Thank you.
Really love your attitude on life. Life keeps coming at you and don't get down of give up. I admire your bounce back attitude. Most UA-camrs would not keep putting out great videos at the rate in which you guys are with all that has happened in the last couple months. That is a more valuable lesson than any fish topic to discuss. Thanks guy's God bless the TB family.
Thank you!!
Wow! Just watched in an instant. Didn't know Tim was a game warden. True hero! Blessed to have met you both.
Very good information! Idk how much every fisherman thinks about line types but I'll tell you it's too much and this fixes that problem.
Thanks!
This year has been rough I love your knowledge and high spirits you have Thank You for your videos!!!!
Great video. It is not always the actual fishing videos that I find helpful. These informational videos are a huge help to me. Thanks.
Just wanted to thank you both for helping make me a better fisherman.
Loved the video. Thank you for all you do. I have learned a lot from your videos. Growing up I never had anyone to teach me the things you talk about and I appreciate what you do. I feel like I have my own private teacher. I think you never talk too long. I like detailed videos I can learn from and put into practice. Never stop doing what you do. Thank you again.
Nice work Matt! Great explanation of a confusing and polar topic.
I just saw Tim on the 20/20 special and I'll tell you what he's a hero. He saved lives and I honestly look up to both of you guys thanks for everything the both of you do. I've been watching tactical bassin for a while now and when I saw Tim on 2020 I said to my gf "I know that guy" lol and Matt i hope all is well after the accident
This video was perfect timing for me . Floro leader and lure just sailing off . Great video, thank you !!
Amen. I’ve been chirping to everyone for years now that leaders to braid is a must. The advantages are great. People always say it’s just another knot to fail. I’ve seldom ever broken at the connection knot. Love to hear your opinions. I think I’ve been too invested in fluorocarbon I need to bust out more mono.
This video single handedly solved a lot of my problems! You’re right Matt, and I didn’t know until now! Fluorocarbon is what I used to use as liters... kept breaking off bass and losing many lures! Very informative video for me personally!
This video has renewed my faith in mono. Fish are not geniuses, was the comment that got me back on it. Thanx Tim. I have way more confidence with my moving baits, especially cranking, spinnerbaits and vibrating jigs because of the stretch. Keeps me from pulling the bait out of the mouth during those hooksets.
Brian Garmon they’ve got another video that’s a bit older but describes the length. In dirtier water it’s not as big of a deal. In really clear water they’re using leader that’s multiple feet in length.
Been fishing for about a month and a half now. This video has really helped put things in line for me(ha). Thank you for taking the time and good luck to you out there.
Interesting video! I use braid to fluoro a lot, and the reason for fluoro over mono is that it doesn't seem to absorb water. As I use an FG knot, which almost never breaks, I tend to put a long 15ft leader on it and can fish and re-tie and break off all day and still have a useable length of leader. If I do the same with mono it seems to get spongy and the knots don't seem as strong, not something I've noticed with fluoro.
I think some of it has to do with that slight give you have with mono, which can be very beneficial at times. It's like anything else though it stretches so much over time that it doesn't completely snap back. I actually have started using a very cheap mono on some of my reels straight to lure for the simple reason I can change it out often and never really get the spongy feel, plus got really lucky and found a very good bargain one i guess lol.
I didn’t know about Tims day job, thank you Tim for what you do 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This videos was so helpful!! I started bass fishing two years ago and I have gained so much information from your videos. I really don't understand how you guys don't have at least 1 million subscribers. Keep up the great work!
I've been using braid to fluorocarbon for years. Not only for sensitivity but because I find the action of the lure I'm using happens instantly! Especially with chatter baits and spinner baits. I will be trying braid to mono soon though. Thanks bro! Great video
I use the FG knot to join my floro leaders to braid on all my rods. I've never had a problem in about 10 years now.
late on this comment but ive had it fail twice in a short amount of time, guess i need a bit more practice because i love the use of the knot
I use braid main line & flouro leader most of the time & I never have any problems with anything . Good video 👍🏽. Very informative 👍🏽
Matt, I am primarily a braid to leader guy as well and have been for the last 3 years or so. But I get a lot of questions from friends about when to use leader vs straight braid, what type of baits what type of cover ect. Also how to select what size line i use as a leader and why I chose that one. Maybe a short 10 min video discussing leaders for those who are looking to go braid to leader.. Where to use, when to use, why to use and how to select Diamameter. Love the channel. Keep up the great information
Matt - although it may not be super fun for you, I could listen to you dissect which line you use for when and why, easily for 30 or 40 minutes. It’s just great info. Mundane, maybe. Extremely informative, definitely. Awesome vid brother. Take care
I am glad to hear your family is coping OK with the fires. Scary stuff. You guys have been through so much this year--thoughts & prayers!!!
I once thought it was my reel that was making a noise.. good to hear it’s common when using braid for it to be noisy. Thanks for the video.
Awesome video Matt! I am switching to braid this coming season. I have been hesitating for a long time more because the line choices are so confusing and the connection knots seem like a hassle. You have a great way of sharing information that eliminates many "concerns" a guy like me might have. Keep the videos coming!
Love your videos Matt. Never realized how big bass fishing was in the Southwest. Keep up the great work and hope your family stays safe.
I was just saying to myself I’m not doing a flurocarbon leader anymore because it’s too problematic. Love mono and braid. This video is a gem
Shout out to Tim & his family. The firefighters get a lot of praise during these fires, but the wardens, rangers, and police get overlooked. Gotta be tough on the family knowing they were evacuated, but Dad is still in that situation saving others.
For sure! Hopefully he sees this
Watching/listening to your "How to Catch the Biggest Fish of Your Life : Full Seminar with Matt Allen" video today, and caught the snippet in the beginning about Tim's work on previous fires... Dude deserves some praise.
Just the right enough info, great video!! Your knot video's are great. Just remember guys if suffering from knot failure and your following along with Matt as he ties them try keeping line diameter so as close as possible!! Thanks for the knot videos Matt!!
I completely agree about the maxima ultra. We grew up using it here in Australia. We are nearly 40 now and still praise that exact line. Here for Murray cod I use 50lb braid (Fins) or (Sufix 832) to 45 or 50 lb mono (Schneider). You guys should buy some Australian Platypus mono and see what you reckon.
I've watched several of your videos, but this is the one that got me to subscribe. Thanks for the great info, and on the fly!
Prayers for your family and friends and every one effected and possibly in harm's way. Great videos as always. Great effective content
Thanks for the help in the right direction been struggling with braids and braid to leader for all kinds of fishing love your guys stuff it helps with all kinds of fishing trout, pike, bass and etc. stay safe everyone and a big thanks to Tim for what he does not a job that everyone will do much love
Matt, Great information again! Thanks Tim for your service and please be safe. Hoping all goes well for both you guys and family 🙏.
Always a great video Matt! I'll be praying for a safe return home for both of your families. And Tim is the Man!!!
Love your outlook on life. Good for Tim for heeding the call
All of your videos are great, but this one was extremely helpful. Best station on UA-cam!
Ive watched 100s of videos and I always come back to you guys thanks for all the great info
Matt. One huge factor that you overlooked is abrasion resistance. This is a major factor when choosing a line. Especially when fishing around rock piles, dock / bridge pylons, or heavy cover. I always use flourocarbon or braid to flourocarbon leader for these applications due to it's high abrasion resistance.
You should check out salt strongs mono vs flouro abrasion test.
Ramble on brother, thanks for dropping that knowledge as usual! I was glad you spent all the time you did on this subject and was a bit shocked about the "Mono Love" lol!
I have watched this video 10+ times over the last year and I just now noticed the line to technique break down in the description. Have you ever done a break down like that to include rods to baits? If not can we get a “why technique specific works” video to include a breakdown of the rods/reels/lines to each technique? Love what you guys do and love the longer breakdown videos.
Matt, another great Video as always. Love the way you dissect all the lines, and no this video could be much much longer. LOL thanks for all the continued tips and information you and Tim provide. God bless, Mike
You’re a good extemporaneous speaker. Nice presentation.
Thank you!! Hope you're healing fast!! Still praying for y'all.
Thanks Matt! Best explanation of the pros and cons of each that I have found! Love the idea of the Braid to Mono system you are using and I am definitely going to give it a shot!
Idk how I missed this video but so glad I found it, going to braid to mono tomorrow and see how it works!!
I've been experimenting with lines and knots non stop to try and dial it in for each technique. I went from all braid to braid leader to straight flouro. Now I only have 100% flouro on 3 rods for dragging, cranks and spinnerbaits and the rest are all braid or braid to leader. I'm sure I'll switch up again but I feel pretty dialed in for most situations. Good info.
Awesome!!
This video should be an in depth seminar. With all the rigs included
Thanks Matt--appreciate it. Glad to see that I have company when it comes to using mono as a leader with braid. Been doing it for years and really can not find a down side compared to the fluorocarbon knot issue when using fluoro
Long reply, sorry. One thing I almost never see reviewed is copolymer mono lines. I use a Zebco Bullet MG as it gives me some benefits of a baitcaster (which I struggled with) and many of the benefits of my open face spinning reels. Although the Zebco is rated for braid (it has bearing pickups) it really loves mono and so far I have experienced less problems with mono on the Zebco. I know the benefits of braid, two of my spinning reels are loaded with it, but in truth, I have caught as many fish on the Zebco using “gulp” Zebco Cajun Red as using braid on my spinning reels. I’ve lost fish on mono by not detecting a bite as quick as braid, on a long cast, and I’ve lost fish on hyper sensitive braid by ripping it out of the fish’s mouth before the fish has fully grasped the hook, this is especially true when fishing Chain Pickerel. Note: I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and by late November smallmouth bass have typically gone deep, this is a problem for me as I’m a shore fishermen. The season ends for bass October 31st on most lakes and December 31st on a few extended season lakes. Chain Pickerel offers year round fishing as it’s an invasive species here and are not afraid to come in shallow to feed on a sunny winters day, it gives a die-hard fisherman like me some sport through a long winter as I wait for bass season to come again. With all that said, I’ve been reading up on copolymer lines and am thinking of giving it a try, I would love to see it reviewed sometime, not just the big three.
So glad to see you getting better and better with each video since the accident. As well as another awesome video. Always look forward to getting the notification of a new tactical bassin video and too learn something new every time it's just not one thing is multiple things.. Great work guys.. Tight lines..
This was a very informative video. I usually just use straight braid.
I been experimenting this summer with straight hi-viz braid. Yellow and blue. I been catching bass all season long. Just yesterday I was hooking bass on shakyhead with straight yellow braid.
The down side of braid is abrasion. I lost a few good fish when fishing in rocky areas. I lost one yesterday due to rock abrasion.
Great video as always!
Intriguing you mentioned the issues with flouro leaders and knots, after losing some big river Smallies due to failed/weak flouro knots in 17' I switched to Berkley Sensation (co-polymer) last year and caught my PB river Bronze (20" ). I was just searching for Maxima ultragreen before I stumbled on this vid, always wanted to try it. Another informative vid, Thanks for sharing👍
Great vid! I started fishing with Maxima ultragreen yrs ago never let me down! 💪
I like using Pline tcb braid. And I agree with Matt on the blood knot. It hasn't failed me yet.
I would agree that my flouro efforts have lost more fish and baits due to sudden breakage than my past setups with mono. Add the extra cost of flouro and it just isnt always the best choice. I truly believe that you are right about 90 percent of setups should be braid/ mono and straight braid or flouro. Thanks for the honesty because so many just push the hype to sell product!
I always learn so much with Matt & Tim
Great video! I was looking for a fishing line pros and cons and was so glad to see you covered this. I have a lot to learn but this really helps. Thanks!
love the advice more power and more fish bro. thanks
Thanks so much for sharing all your amazing tips !!! There are so many ways to catch bass and so many different personalities it’s hard to see what exactly a fish wants! So thanks soook dang much for all the amazing tips that almost everyone can use!!!!!!! 👍
Thank you so much for taking the time on comparing different lines. The information has been very helpful.👍
Excellent video Matt!! kept up the awesome work & hopefully we see you on the water soon!!!!
I love into depth videos like this.
Good job Matt 👍🏽🙌🏽
GREAT video! And thanks for the list of line applications...VERY helpful
Hey Matt,
Love your channel. I would like to see a 2nd video on this where you show how long of a leader you use for each different application.
I am in the Great Lakes region. I echo your praise for Maxima Max Green mono leader. That was the go-to brand among steelhead river anglers in Michigan when I was growing up; 6-pound-test on very limber long (9 ft) graphite rods can land 15-pound steelhead and 25-pound king salmon.
I bought Maxima ultragreen the first time because it said "super soft and limp," and I thought it was a hilarious choice of words for marketing. Have never used another mono since.
My 8yr old and my 11yr old run braid to leader and i have that setup on 4 out of 7 rods i use. Great video.
I've been going back in forth in my head over what type I should be using for what application; and this video helped answer a lot of my questions. Thankyou TB, y'all have helped me learn and grow so much as a fisherman from your videos
Just started this video and can already tell you I caught plenty of fish on mono. Green or clear 20lb down to 4lb Berkley big game or trilene. I am just now using Power Pro braid and a mono leader just to save time and money on respooling. Great idea for a vid Matt I sure I will learn something
I couldn't decide which one to use so I braided all three of them and made a hybrid 😅
I use pubic hair
I’m 100% braid as man line to a leader. I’ve been using a mono leader but slowly incorporating fluro as a leader. If you’re not fishing braid to a leader... you’re missing out.
have you noticed a big difference? my thought on jig or trig is the mono not as sensitive? or does being connected to the braid make it more sensitive on a slack line bite?
Fish quite often, bass , trout, steelhead, salmon here in the north west. Tried a variety of line combinations and always go back to power pro super slick and maxima ultra green mono. Great proven combination
Bro I've lost some nice fish with a floro leader from braid. Sucks so bad. This video changed my hook up ratio for sure. I don't think using mono as a leader has lost me any fish. I'm definitely gonna check out assassin. Thanks Matt!!
Great video! I’d love the 45 min version too!! And I started tying the blood knot after a tactical video few years ago and literally never broke a connection since. Line for sure but the knot still there!!
I'm pretty sure in another video I've heard him say six foot leader.
Maxima is the only mono I use as well. Glad I’m on the right track with it. Only use it for certain applications but it comes in handy.
I love the sound of braid going through guides!
Love your detailed long form videos and your positive attitude. Very helpful, with an excellent delivery. Stay safe during fire season. Thank you Tactical !!
