The drive channel on this thing totally rocks!
intheblues I've owned a Peavey Renown 212 and a smaller Peavey 10 watt amp; Your right, the drive channels rock on these things. The Peavey in this demo is quite nice. Your sweet chops and your Tele have something to do with it I'm sure.
The chip is likely for the reverb tank, the drive in transtubes tend to be 100% transistors.
I'm not too sure but there were two of the JRC chips in there. :-)
You wanted to steer away from the thrash channel on the Silver Stripe Studio Pro 112. But, I've found that if you only push the thrash button in on the 2nd channel with the gain button out, you'll get the same voicing as the clean channel, but with overdrive. So, you don't get the huge mid hump that you would from having no buttons or the gain button pushed in, and you can dial it to taste. If you want a slight mid push, but not as much as the gain channel alone, just dial it in with the thrash button in. Now, if you push the thrash and the gain buttons in together, you're in metal territory. So, the versatility of that amp is crazy! Very nice clean channel, and so many options for channel 2 for overdrive or distortion. I almost didn't like the drastic change between the two channels, then I found that I can even them out this way. Hope this helps someone with that amp.

The old Peavey stuff is GREAT and lasts forever! I have one in front of me now.
Peavey gear from the 80's and 90's is excellent.
Peavey is the only amp maker to actually make a real non-tube tube amp. They truly sound like a tube amp. Because the others all try to emulate many different tube amps with digital technology they can't achieve the effect we want. Peavey made an all solid state amp that just sounds like 1 tube amp, the one it is.

This was the first amp that I bought after I learned to play! I ran that thing from high school until well after I got married. 20 years later and it is still running. My father in law uses it now.
That’s bad ass. I just got one for my kiddo she’s about to be 17. I hope ya still have it man and I hope ya rocked it on stage.
This proves that a budget analoque Solid State amp can sound PERFECT !!
Awesome demo & review Shane! I just picked up the exact same amp a few weeks ago and it's treat! Slapping all my reverbs, delays and mod pedals in the FX loop and my dirts n fuzzes plugged into the front is fantastic thanks to this RAD el cheapo little amp! Anyone that likes those clean fender-y cleans and tweedy drive tones should be on the lookout for the Silver Stripe 112!!!
Peavey amps are so under-rated. Missing my old Bandit.
Gigged with one of these last night......What a great amp. Made in US model. Loud enough for most gigs and the clean channel is superb. All for £50. If you can find one, go for it.

Hey Shane, thx for your videos. I actually picked up a (only slightly) broken Bandit 112 - Silver Stripe - based on your videos. The Bandits are quite pricy here in germany so for ppl with some basic electronic skills a "broken" one can be a really good deal. Mine was about 110 bucks (€) and all it took to fix it was some cleaning and resoldering of the pots an jacks. Now it works like a charm i and like it even more live! Keep up the good work! Working ones are 200 Bucks minimum here!
I have both, bandit 112 red stripe & Studio Pro 112 silver stripe. My Studio Pro is the winner. I like it more.

I got this around when it first came out back in the day. It was my 1st decent amp. Wish I still had the damn thing. Loved the spring reverb in it. I remember being able to hear the springs in it when you'd walk around with it and set it down and everything.
I just picked up one of these, which is from the 80's. It's still working perfectly, and I can assure you, it sounds killer! :)

Excellent amp this . wonderful clean and monster distortion . I had one of this for 14 years and I loved it , but it was stolen . Now I have a Valveking 212 .
This is a big surprise for me, that a solid state amp can produce such a warm bluesy tone - even with a Tele, which is my fave......just as Thinline acoustic equipped with a DiMarzio bridge and a Seymour Duncan neck pickup. I'm just retired as 66 y.o. and now it's time for blues/rock. As retired the money is less, and a powerfull tube amp will Challenge my budget - this Peawey won't. Thanks so much to present this amp, Shane. My gear is just as I could dream about......and then some, because now I can afford a great delay pedal from T-Rex. Keep it bluesy with love from Denmark 🎸 🇩🇰

@@timmycash1 You will don´t regret. IMO, the best solid state amp you can get. "Clean" channel sounds great, but the "Drive" channel of these amps sounds simply amazing. Full, fat and warm sounding.
Sounds so good! What a find!! Older Peavey’s are tanks! I have an 80s Peavey Backstage Plus 35w that I bought brand new that still sounds great and it is sooooo freaking loud for a small amp!
I like peavey, i got my daughter a 10w practice amp 20 years ago , even then it was another level of clean and dirty , i want one of these amps ,
I have a Silver Stripe Express 112. Bought it new back in '97 or '98. Very similar to the Studio Pro but it has the addition of the T-Dynamics Power level control as well as being equipped with a Sheffield speaker. I've always got great tones out of the amp. Funny thing is when I tried a tube screamer type OD with it, while I liked the tone, I really never got anything I couldn't get with the amp on it's own. I never knew the Peavey's utilized the same chip as the tube screamers in the drive channel. That explains the similar tones I guess.

In my opinion it sounds better than the bandit.
That’s my gigging amp! I’ve got a bandit red stripe and a solo 65, but the studio 112 does it all and is super lite! I have a ton of tube amps, but they’re too heavy or to small to haul around for gigs. Throw a terror stamp (back-up) in the cabinet and you’re ready to roll.
A friend of mine has one of those. Since his has all four of its dual op-amp chips in sockets we spent some time swapping them out with different op-amps just to see if doing so would make any appreciable difference. We found that swapping the two BA4560 op-amps closest to the inputs with OPA2134 op-amps makes the amp sound even better.

@@tigerw2878 I am glad you asked because not long after I posted this response I found one myself so we were able to A/B them. We returned his to stock then confirmed between the two of us and a couple of other friends who are also musicians that when stock they both sound the same. Then we rolled in a few different op-amps in different positions within one amp. We found that the one with the OPA2134 in the position that your signal hits first sounded more dynamic and responsive to your technique as well as lowered the noise floor noticeably. The only benefit to putting them in any other position is it reduces the noise floor. Which is a good thing but not enough different to justify the cost of putting more than a couple OPA2134s in place of the original op-amps. You can achieve a little more reduction in the noise floor with LM4562s in the rest of the positions. So for mine I put OPA2134's in the first and second positions the signal hits and LM4562's in the rest. This is how I left mine since that day and I am very happy with it that way. :o)
@@tracyc7813 omg thank you so much for this, I recently just got this exact amp too, a 90's silver stripe studio pro. Taking it for a Texas heat speaker installation and it needs some electronic maintenance so if the amp technician is able to do the same mods that you did for a good price I'll get him to do that too :)

Fun amp. Bought one of these cheap, totally agree the clean channel is very tube-bluesy and takes a tube screamer with panache. The dirty channel takes some messing around with, but can kick out some great tone. Very loud amp if it needs to be.
Bro just got a silver stripe studio pro for 15 bucks on marketplace. didn’t work figured the fuse blew. changed fuse everything works for a win 👍😂

Shame I just picked up a Bandit 112 Sheffield Silver Stripe for $50 US and I was not expecting the level of volume and tones from it. I think it’s 80 watts and you can plug it into an external cab. LOUD AS HELL!!! The Sheffield speaker on it is an upgrade IMO!! Great video as always pal.

Can't see a good argument for getting a generic tube amp over this. Cleans were maybe a little dull(sure with the right tweaks or mic they'd be better) but the gain is incredible.
Out of all the guys on here you get the best tone out of a solid state Peavey funny Telecaster cheap solid state Peavey and you're set for life LOL
This was my very first amp back in the 90s!! so many memories....Back then I didn't know what the controls were doing, so I just went by ear...hahahah
The one thing that would make this video even better is the inclusion of a guitar equipped with humbuckers.
I have one of these I turned into a head bought for $175 cad , I notice if the loop is on as u turn it up u need a pedal with a level as the loop really boosts

You DID make that amp sound good. Mind you, you were on fire in this vid. Interesting to see you got your hands on a Sliver Stripe. For an amp that's going on 20 years old, it looked like it was in good condition.

Shane, Great demo on both the red stripe and the silver. I'm almost leaning towards the silver but, have you ever done a review of the Peavey Envoy 40 watt 1-12 ? I've seen some bad ones. Your reviews are so much better the way you demo them. Very natural sounding ..Just as if you were using the amp at a gig. Thanks for all demo's you do.... Cheers mate

I had one of these and loved it till it popped incredibly loudly when it switched off.
I remember the build quality was excellent, it was a rock of an amp.
Mine does the same from time ago. When you turn off the amp, it sounds a big "¡Pooop"! Then, when you turn on the amp, it sometimes does not sound 🙁
I love mine, I'm going to run it parallel with my Fender deluxe 85 . Both are 65w . The fender has a channel that allows for both it's clean and dirty channels to run parallel and along with the PV it'll sound fat.
Now I love these Peavey amps as much as anyone but I'm betting you can make a Marshal MG SS sound just as good Shane ;)
I have this same amp, and what I love most about it is that it has a huge amount of headroom for the bedroom. I play a Schecter Banshee with a pair of EMG active pups through a Zoom G5 fx pedal, and when I have it on the metal setting, anything more than halfway between 0 and 1 on the volume is too loud for comfort. That's on the Low Gain input. I rarely use the High Gain. It's just too much.
The Pre/Post settings are great for playing a strat or tele straight in, and when you play a Les Paul with high output pups, the Thrash setting makes it howl. It really does sound like a tube, but without all sorts of fancy digital gubbins. I've tried a few modelling amps over the years, but this sounds better than all of them, which is something considering how basic it is.
The downsides of the amp are the upsides, but in opposite. It is stupidly loud at 65w, and way more than you need for practice and jamming at home, but not quite loud enough for gigging. Unless you really drive it, you don't get the full range of sounds, just like a tube amp, so most people who own one never really get to hear just what it can do.
It's a great amp in it's own right, but Peavey tried to fill a gap that didn't exist.
I have one that I gig with regularly it’s a great lil amp ❤… and it weighs nothing… takes pedals well too and really reliable!

Hey Shane, 10 points on the amp. Sounds great! Your channel definitely helped me reconsider Peavey amps. Wrote them off for years and regret it. I have a Transtube Special 212 Sheffield Silver Stripe (bigger brother to the Bandit). Thing is a beast, can go from Surf all the way to Death Metal and do everything in between really easily. Not sure if anyone has mentioned it to you, but the "Thrash" button is actually not a gain stage but just a Mid tone notch switch. According to the Bandit manual (silver stripe) it notches the Mids about 20db. Also, if you can stand it, try the clean channel with the volume maxed to 10 and the the T-Dynamics rolled off to about 40-60%. You can get a JCM800 esque drive sound that way. Still remains very dynamic to your pick attack, but the downside is it is terribly loud. You can roll off some volume and get a similar sound without going deaf, not that the drive channel is bad though. Thanks for all the helpful videos and wonderful playing. Greetings from Seattle.
I used to own one of those, a silver stripe just like this. I had a couple of Bandits as well, so I tended to choose a Bandit over the Studio Pro for gigs. But I did take the Studio Pro to a couple of jams, as I recall. After hearing this, I'm wondering now what possessed me to ever sell it. I love the Clean channel, I played teles through it, so I generally didn't engage the Bright switch. I used the Lead channel pretty much the same way you did, never used the Thrash. The Lead channel was noisy, however, so maybe that's why I sold it. Good video demonstration, I enjoyed it (and gave it a Like). I'm a long time follower and subscriber.
I got this amp used and it's a very good amp. I prefer more power but it does the trick! Lots of sustain and surprisingly good blues and rock amp imo. Thanks for sharing Shane! I've been a long subscriber to your channel, always quality content!

I have fond memories of mine back in the day, a buddy had a Bandit from this same series and somehow I always thought my studio pro sounded better. Great cleans and I dug the overdrive channel with my telecaster, just a great little amp. Gonna keep my eyes open for one

I have a silver stripe Envoy 110, a smaller version of this but otherwise very similar. According to the manual, the "thrash channel" is a 20dB midrange boost.

I had two of this amp. They both had some noise on the clean channel but oddly, the second channel was very silent (without the gain and trash been pressed).

The Silver Stripe Studio Pro has a great drive channel on the lower gain settings -- try goosing it a bit more with a Tube Screamer . It loves it. Great amps for the $
Great playing mate. I just bought this amp used, your fault ;) I’m very pleased with it. Like that it’s American made. Always been a sucker for tubes, but this amp sounds so good.
I should have listened and looked at your reverb settings before commenting before. I listen to your videos with reverb so I didn't notice the reverb knob.
The reverb did sounds great ,especially on the clean channel. I tend toward the hall reverb.

IbanezMT2 , I got one and I love it but it has one HUGE drawback you don't think about at the beginning, it's heavy like a tank. Drilled 16 holes and screwed 4 wheels to it, but it is still quite heavy to move around. Still, soundvise I will keep it forever....

the secret of the good sound of thse studio pro 112 is the emnince made blue marvel. i have a spare one loudpseaker and i have to admit that is good, very smooth. i have with the same setting compared to a g12t-75 that is harsh as hell in comparison
I think peavey trans tube amps sound more like some of the classic tube amps than their actual low end tube amps do (valve king/classic etc).
Hey Shane: Do you think this amp could be used for a good Jazz tone? That is smooth, with a bit of the sparkle taken off and a good low end?

I miss it all the time. Fave tone, Nailing Tommy Crain's solo to Funky Junky using the lead channel, high gain. Used it for band practice. Bought a CyberTwin which was great.
I guess these don't age well. Peavey, built to last.
have a Vypyr 15. wife raised hell when I paid $49. saving grace now.
Sounded pretty good. Fendery cleans with more mids, and gain was still more in the PV foot print.
PV really fucked up when they stopped making these.
Have you ever tried a Fender Ultimate Chorus? That was the first amp I ever bought and for a solid state Fender I remember it being pretty good. I used it from around 1998 until 2006 when I traded it in on a Peavey JSX. I really like your channel, by the way, and you're a great player! Fellow lefty here.
Have you tried a 'wet/dry' set up with another amp? That Pedal Show guys get some great tones with that. 'Lets give it a shot' ... Shane!
Dude, the authority in the tone these amps possess! Just bought one and I’m putting it through a Marshall avt 4x12 and it is an absolute menace! Tons of tonal options with the gain/thrash switch. Anyone can find their sound somewhere in this amp🎸

Sounds great! Yes, secondhand is the way to go for scoring great deals, I recently picked up a Roland Blues Cube Artist 212 in mint condition shipped to my door 4,300km away for only $799aud. There's nothing wrong with the video footage quality in the car either :-)

I must say a Fender princeton 65 blows it away. I used to own a Peavey Triumph P A G 120 valve combo but compared to Fender clean it lacked low end bloom .

For years shane I used a Yamaha mrk2 50x1x12 combo at least a thousand gigs on it got my transtube amps and the Yamaha is retired

I picked one up a while ago for 115 bucks. didn't know what it was but I wanted to try out a new amp. fits my need and im not gonna need a new one.
I own Studio Pro Silver Stripe and Red Stripe (both full original, with Blue Marvel speaker).
Red Stripe's clean channel on "Modern" mode sounds a bit better to my ears, but lead channel sounds much better (fatter, richer and more defined) on the Silver Stripe. "Thrash" channel ("Modern Lead" on the Red Stripe) sounds much better on the Silver Stripe as well.
Red Stripe has the T-dynamics control that Silver Stripe lacks, but in my opinion, using this featurer removes power, presence and punch to the final sound.
Overall, I prefer the Silver Stripe version.

Shane, If you find a TransTube Supreme Head, It's the same circuit. The Peavey XXL is even better.

Well, prices for these Transtube amps have almost doubled. About the same as a good used Katana.

I think the red stripe models look classier. BTW, Shane, do you (or anyone else here know why Fender's Deluxe Reverb is called "Deluxe Reverb Amp"? Was someone concerned that guitarists might think it was something other than an amp? Does it have to do with all the drugs in the 60's? :)
