- This is the greatest cheap amp ever made...a Marshall stack in a little black box! Here is the secret of the most "under the radar" amp of all time! Dave Whipple
You are the MAN, Whip! Still the best gear reviews available. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks a lot NS! I appreciate it.
My daughter brought home this exact amplifier (patent applied for) from a garage sale that she bought for 25 bucks. I cleaned up the pots and jacks, and have been absolutely ecstatic with it. Its gonna take my passing before it leaves my possession. Thanks for the Tip, Whip! ROCK ON! 🤘
How long did it take you to clean the pots?
And i thought the first gen peavey rage i scored for 25 was deal. She got the jackpot there. nice. rock on man.
I live 2km far from his house and yeah, that tone was amazing lol
LOL.
Did ya go play bass or drums for him? Lol I've met some of the best band mates I've ever had when I cruised by and heard a guitar or something being played!!
Back in 1990, my teenage band had 2 guitarists playing on these beasts. I'm a drummer, I can certify those things are loud.
Im a Metal guitarist in a Thrash Metal band I had a peavey vypyr 30 and it was fucking loud with a tube screamer I regret selling it.
I had the exact same one. It is LOUD as heck. The sounds it made with my Les Paul studio… oh man. It was my first ampthat I got with my LP. I first had it in 1995 with my LP and played with a couple of my high school friends jammin on songs from Nirvana and others. I sold it like about 10 years ago and I pretty much regret it. Currently looking for one locally.
This is by far one of the coolest things I have ever seen, just jamming with your guitar outdoors. Standing ovation dude
Thanks
Oh man I had to laugh at “yeah this button here, I don’t know what it does.” I thought I was the only one!!!
LOL!
What I love about my Bandit is that it's great for the reasons you mention but it's also equally great for a clean jazz tone, believe it or not. I plug in my Epiphone Joe Pass and can get a gorgeous tone that's thick and chimey but NOT muddy. Also, the reverb on these is outstanding.
Exactly, it's great for jazz tones...
I had a Teal Bandit in the 90s, then 2 years ago bought a refurbished Red stripe. Great sounding amps that are extremely reliable and always deliver big quality sounds. It even fell down a flight of stairs once. I just plugged it in and it just worked. Peavey Bandits have never let me down!
Great gear
It's always been a dream of mine to have enough land to be able jam outside (without driving any neighbors crazy).
I had a used Bandit back in the 90s and it was a great amp. Absolutely bulletproof.
Couldn't believe it was you when I clicked on this video! I've watched a lot of your cabin building/bushcraft videos and have really enjoyed them. Didn't even know about your guitar gear.
You are so correct. I have a 1994 Teal Peavey Bandit 112 & I can't turn it up past 2.5 or I risk divorce. So, I play most when the wifey isn't home. I've hooked up a Zoom Multi-Effects pedal & it provides a great clean foundation for many different kinds of crunch tones. Total cost with multi-effects pedal - $275. How can you beat that? What a deal!
Awesome!! I recorded my first album with a teal bandit. Good times!
3 Card Monty Talk about maybe the best budget rig of all time with the Bandit and a Zoom Multi Effects unit, all the Zoom stuff is good but the newer G3n and G5n series take it to another level, when recorded (if someone actually knows what their doing) they can sound almost as good as all the expensive stuff like the Kempers and AXFX.
The black LP junior in this vid was $45 from guitar center used and the amp came from ....off all places....an antique store for $65 out the door. Both of them have needed a bit of work to be what they are now ...but for $110 its a hard rig to beat for the money.
3 Card
Woah! Woah smokey!! So you're tellin me, all I gotta do is get me one of them there awesome amps, turn it up past 2.5 and I'm free!!???
Free at last free at last!!!!!
Jack
Have same prob , Bro .. time for a DIVORCE ..
you are the first person that has figured out how to fully explain the t-dynamics knob. peavey needs you to really explain how the transtube awesomeness works. this was a beautiful demonstration... thank you.
Thank you Steve! I felt the same way when I discovered this function...WHY didn't peavey explain this to everyone back in the 90's !!!
Sounded great!
Johan! Love your channel brother and thanks for the comment. We're on opposite ends of the price spectrum...but I love what you do. Cheers.
I found this video because I often think fondly of my first ebay purchase for about $150, 18 years ago, and I was curious what the world of UA-cam thought of my fondly remembered bandit. I’m so glad to see your review, and to see that the mighty Swede, Johan Segeborn has chimed in with a friendly comment!
@@whipscheapguitars2856 Johan Also does videos of cheap stuff, so in that capacity you're not completely different. I just saw his Peavey Bandit silver stripe video. Good stuff 🙂
The two gods of tone
you are a world wide legend Johan ...but i also really love your style whip ! Kinda reminds me of me ....hiding his grumpyness and a real love of a bargain ! I am still kicking myself for buying a gibson SG brand new in 1987 ....still got it- still love it ...but i play cheap shit all day long ! Viva la " cheap bastards !!!! lol
I am and forever will be a Peavey amplification fan. From my 6505, Bandit 112 to my current 130W Centurion they always sound great and cant be beat for their price.
Dude, I have the silver stripe Bandit and have already been loving it. I've always just left the T-Dynamics knob up full cuz I didn't understand its purpose. This video just freaked me out -- can't wait to get home and play with it. Thanks so much for this, brother! 🍻
Let me know what you think when you get to mess with the knob.
You are the only one who explained t.dynamic use. I have this amp too. Great job!
Yeah. I've had one of these amps for years, and I never knew what t.dynamic did. Now I do. Thanks.
I have one just like yours. It was my first amp ever. I was a metal kid back when I bought it and barely used the clean channel. And I thought the amp sounded better with the T.Dynamics rolled all the way clockwise. Thanks for sharing! I'll def try this trick when I get the old amp fixed!
“You can smoke a good drummer with this amp”, quote of the year lol. Reason enough to get it 😂😂😂
Thank you for making me feel like genius for buying this as my first and only amp I ever bought when I was 17
I love the enthusiasm in your video and the enthusiasm in the comments. It doesn't sound great, but proof you don't need a lot of $$ to sound good. The sound starts in your playing first, gear second.
Thanks for the comment.
no, great gear sounds great, bad playing with great gear sounds great, but is bad playing, lol. totally not the same
Great playing on severely mediocre sounds nearly Great . Bad playing on great gear sounds Bad .
Awesome tip and video! My very first amp was a Peavey Renown 212. Didn’t know much about amps. All I knew is I wanted loud and affordable. Got it for $150 and that sucker was so loud I think I could have played Dodger stadium! Struggling college student so had to sell it. Picked up a Line 6 Spider when I got some funds, and with all that digital modeling crap I hated it!!! I just wanted my Peavey back. Fast forward 25 years and I’ve been really wanting an older Bandit. I’ve got a teal Backstage 110 and for it’s size packs a punch! Keep up the cool videos!
ive been using this exact amp for over 20 years. i still have the original one i bought back in like 1997-98, and it is my gigging amp. love it. 👍👍
Great rig!
I bought one new in 97-98, lost it along the way but just got another one from the c list, it's like reuniting with an old friend 😊
Gigged on a black box Bandit just like that for nine years. Miss it. They actually turn down really well, too. Always ran the clean channel around seven with the T-dynamics at 30-40% and the Resonance pushed in.
Awesome. It's nice to hear from another Bandit player!! Great "road warrior" of an amp.
LOUD! Because you need to drown out the people tied up and screaming in the cellar.
Wow Matt.....what weird stuff is going on in your head???
@@whipscheapguitars2856 Gday Whip. What color Bandit is the best in your opinion. Silver, Red or Teal?
@@whipscheapguitars2856 9
LMAO we should re-edit the video adding "plz halp" screams coming from the basement.
Nice....I have the solo series 75....great sound, awesome clean punch with the scorpion speaker and just as loud and grungy as you want to get, with a insane reverb side. Love this amp ~
Very nice!
When you rock your Peavey right, your neighbors do too
LOL
@@whipscheapguitars2856 Hi Dave, you're actually treating this like a tube amp, right? By pushing the clean channel you get the amp to distort - and it sounds really good! Have you tried this trick on other solid state amps? Best from Denmark.
I like the way that when you turn up the amp, the guitar changes colors!
LOL, thats hillarious
Whip is dead right about these killer little amps. The late great Micky Jones of Man was one of my favourite guitar players and I saw him play live many times. I heard him with amps by Ampeg, Marshall, Fender, Hiwatt, Laney....... At one point he turned up for a Glasgow gig with a Bandit and he still sounded like himself i.e. a huge range of great distinctive sounds just by riding that volume pot and boosting the mids with a half-cocked wah. You would never have guessed his amp cost a fraction of the price of his usual gear. If you can't cut it with one of these maybe it's because you just can't cut it.
Great comment Derek. Thanks Bro.
Mickey was FABULOUS.
The neighbors must love-Love-LOVE Mr. Whipple!!!!
Am I the only one who actually likes the drive channel on old American Peavey SS amps? Peaveys have a sound of their own I cant describe with words, but I can pick out an old peavey ss amp with a blindfold on anyday. to each their own. thanks for the tip, whip!
Hey MKO. I actually recorded my first album with my first band on a teal stripe bandit back in 96' Those amps ave a sound all their own.
I have both a red-strip Bandit and a silver strip Envoy and love the TransTube distortion from the drive channels. I think Peavey's TransTube is about as good as it gets. Btw, the Bandit and Envoy are very similar in their sound, the Envoy having a little less "thump" though due to only having a 10" speaker and a smaller cabinet. The drive circuitry is nearly identical in them, but the Envoy lacks the T-Dynamics feature. What the Envoy has going for it is it's MUCH lighter weight than the Bandit, so it's a nice grab-and-go amp.
Glad to know im not the only one who loves the overdrive sound of a good Peavey SS amp. I've owned transtubes of all sorts in the past, loved them, sold most of them in the last year or so when ebay prices skyrocketed on them lol, but right now my main go to amp is a Peavey Bandit Solo Series 65 from 1984. Love the drive tone on it. I plug my 2014 Gibson Melody Maker directly in the drive channel and plug a digitech rp into the loop for delay and reverb and it kills man. To your point, I agree those transtube amps are awesome sounding and I enjoy using the t-dynamics as well. It makes that Bandit a little more tolerable as a home amp on low volume. I love the modern setting on clean and the vintage setting on dirt. I just wish the footpedal would allow you to switch those up without flicking the switch, but hey nothing is perfect.
Mister Knight Owl I to like the drive on my Peavey Bandit 112. Yes it does kick ass.
Mister Knight Owl I like the crunch channel on those amps at lower volumes.
Can't argue with that tone ,
You know it's getting serious when he uses the pointing broom, the section should be called "Getting a Handle on the Peavey Bandit"
Right on
i'm the proud father of a peavey transtube supreme, and the gain channel is excellent when the pre-gain is set at about 2-3. when plugging a distortion pedal like a metal muff through it, it just helps to warm and balance out the tone of your distortion and emulate how a tube amp takes pedals.
right on.
By the way, if you want to use headphones with these, just unclip the speaker and run the preamp out into a headphone amplifier
Awesome! After checking out this video, I was going to look up what I needed to do to use headphones with an old amp like this. Thanks for the info.
I have had my Bandit for 30 years. Never let me down and i have gigged it extensively.
Thanks Stratboy999!
I have a red stripe USA made Bandit! Love playing through it more than some of the other better amps I have.
scott hutchens I’m the same!!! 😄
right on
Awesome thanks. I have a ‘97 Sheffield silver. Hardly use the clean channel . I tried this with the Schaffer storm box and it was freaking Ac/dc amazing.
Awesome
This thing strikes me as the AK-47 of amplifiers. I know some people swear by them and I might score one if I can find it at the right price. Thanks again for another cool video.
Yeah, its like a Glok.....it never breaks and always works.
tube amp snobs remind me of 9mm fanboys, guns are very analogous to musical equipment.
The bandit is like the 870 of amps. Nothin fancy. They sold a billion of them. They always get the job done.....but some stuck up trap guy with a 10k over and under will always have something bad to say about them. Love the gun angle guys.
Are you saying the gun sounds better than the amp or that you like the analogy better?
Please post a video of a good sounding amp. You have an account .....post something.
I had that same model back in the 90's and I loved it. Those really are great amps. I have a 1990 Peavey Bravo now.
NICE!
used peavy bandit all through the 80's in the 90's upgraded to a stereo chorus.
Started with a Peavey Classic, moved to the Stereo Chorus 212 and then the Transtube Supreme half stack
I really enjoyed this video - not a lot of people realise how great these amps are. I picked one of these up in 2008 for £50 on eBay and I love it, it's still my main amp. SS amps get shat on a lot, but you've just gotta trust your ears. If it sounds good, it is good!
Absolutely! I love these amps and they can really crank!! Lots of features and good tones for cheap!!
Came fairly close to buying a used Peavey Bandit in 1996. Now you're making me regret walking away. Not the first dumb amp move I've made.
Get one now...they are cheap and they are super reliable.
I have 10 amps at this point. Guess one more wouldn't hurt.
Thats the spirit!
Also,...the wife can't tell them apart anymore. Doesn't know if it's been here for 30 years or just came through the door.
While you're at it find an old TKO bass amp then run the Bandit into that. It will jiggle every cell in your body. I got evicted from an apartment in 1992 because of that rig.
My first amp was a Peavey Rage 158. I did obtain a Bandit at one point but didn't hang onto it very long. I do see em come up on Craigslist often enough, I may buy one and keep off the distortion channel, thanks for the tip, sound great!
PinetopJackson Cool! I want a Rage and now a Bandit also.
That’s a great sound, the sort of sound I like from a Marshall, old and vintage single channel non master, love it
Thanks Eddie. I wish you could hear how loud it gets like this.
My first amp was a peavey bandit 65 love to see the bandit love
I have one of those but I'm not sure what model it is. I love the distortion it's almost fuzz like on mine.
Edit: I just did a brief search and mine looks exactly like a teal stripe but it's got silver stripes instead, same controls and everything just different colour.
Dude I love it!!! You are the wiz of the Peavey bandit. I'm convinced on the sound. Keep up the great work!!! sound is subjective so keep on doing what your doing brother!!! Love it...
I’ve seen these Bandits in the past over the years, I have to be honest, I’ve never tried one out, but now I wish I did. I do have a USA made Fender Princeton 112 plus amp that I bought 3 years ago for $125.00. it’s got huge Weber speaker that someone put in it and this thing CRANKS! Really enjoying your videos Whip!
Thanks DJ.
My buddy had the teal version. He rocked that thing. Sounded so good. ACDC, STP. ...all the "seattle sound" the amp def rocks. I bought that amp your using because of it. But i could never rock it...lol
Coolest amp review ever made
Thank you for sharing this tip! I live in Spain and I was considering buying a valve amp for giging, but I got a Red Stripe Bandit for 80 euro. Great sound and veeeery loud!
Glad that worked out for you. Bandits are a LOT of sound for not much cash.
slanted ground and a wooden chair, best amp stand ever
yup !
rory gallagher style
Great video. I like the let it roar outdoor approach and enthusiasm. I had one of these for a bit, very good amp, for sure. The clean channel is definitely a cool channel, even just for clean, ha.
If I recall correctly, the resonance button is for a fatter tone at lower volumes, but it's been a long time ago that I had it, back in the early 2000s. Might fatten up single coils too, can't recall, but it had some nice bells and whistles.
I can't believe I just bought a mint condition peavey 112 transtube silver stripe yesterday for £89 British pounds, it sounds amazing, but your tip has got me really excited about trying your settings. Great job...thumbs up and subscribed! :)
WOW Adrian...you stole it for that price!!! Good job brother. Its a great amp for sure, but running the clean channel like an old non-master volume tube amp...THATS the ticket!
I think it may have been you who beat me to that amp Adrian. Did you buy it on Gumtree from a lady in Shropshire? If you change your mind about it drop me a line 😉
No actually, it was on ebay, and I was very surprised to find that over the three days that it was up for sale, I was the only bidder. I bought it from a very nice chap in Leicester, and even better, this amp was indeed as he described. Which was as new, I couldn't believe my luck. I have numerous amps including perhaps my favourite...a Marshall DSL 40C which I replaced the stock speaker with a Celestion Vintage 30 16 ohm. Once run in, it sounds amazing. As for the Peavey bandit 112 silver stripe, wow, what an amp! Goes perfect with my Peavey T60 1978 guitar also in excellent condition. I replace the original pickups with some hot rodded seymour duncan pickups. That is a must buy if you get the chance, an absolute workhorse of a guitar with such a variety of tone. It's a Les Paul, Strat and Tele in one and plays great. :)
Wow the only bidder?? Good on you
When I bought my Silver Stripe, I thought I'd crank the clean channel up a little once my Mrs's had gone shopping. Ornaments fell over very quickly. I had to stop when the clock fell from the wall. These things didn't happen in the 7.1 quake we'd had a couple of years before. I looked at the gain. It was just over 2 and a half. I have NEVER taken it higher than 5.
Good tip though. If I get a chance to play BLOODY loud I'll try it!!
Even with the volume fairly low .....turn the T dynamic way down and it will break up......I just need to do another Bandit vid. Thanks Leif for the comment!
Excellent, very explicit and you are a very cool guitar player, Epiphone and Peavey together it's only rock 'n'roll ;) . Thank's a lot.
Thanks FK. I bought this amp for $65 at an Antique store of all places, and the Jr. I got from guitar center for $49 used.....so all together this rig costed....$114.
Excellent, i prefer a great guitar player with a cheap guitar than a cheap guitar player with an expansive guitar.., "it might get loud" (excuse my english i'm French ...)
Totally. Not to mention a lot of great players use cheap gear for flavor on huge hit records. STP's guitarist used a lot of Harmony, Silverstone guitars. Keith Richards also used a lot of Harmony guitars for second guitar parts.
Totally agree, and working man's gear. I spent too much time and $ over the years chasing gear and have gone full circle. I ran across this video because I'm dusting off a Bandit and an Epi Les Paul Special.
I rocked a Peavey Bandit in the late 80's through the 90's!!
Haha, that dog didn't look very impressed ; )
She's a "country music" fan.
Oh, of course, I should've guessed.
Happy New Year!
whip's cheap guitars Don't know, thought he's more into Stray cats stuff
Love the enthusiasm, Dave. Brilliant stuff. And GREAT sounding amp!
Thanks Nick!!
So I just got this amp from a friend with my first electric guitar the other day for my first amp,
Mine is having a problem though. It keeps getting super quiet, and is super hard to hear. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?
May be dirty nobs try getting an electronic spray and clean em
@@carlfox15 I tried that and it didn’t really work, I did buy some cheap pedal cord things and put 1 in both of my open pedal spots and it fixed it most of the way
Probably a lose connection in the preamp board
I have one of these still... gotten it back in high school when they were new.. great sounding amp for the money.. and I have a Mesa Mark IV head and a Marshall JCM head .. this little amp sounds great with a 212 cab with V30s..plugged in.. I’ve thought of buying one to make a head out of it ...
The peavey supreme head IS a bandit head. Funny thing about those...its just the bandit chassis in a head form but because they flipped the chassis upside down to mount it to the bottom of the cab....all the controls are backwards......but its still just a bandit.
How would you rate the different Peavey bandit 112's - silver, red, blue (teal) compared to one another? Do they all have the T-Dynamics option?
T-Dynamics option is only available in *Silver* Stripe (Bandit) and *Red* Stripe (Bandit and Studio Pro).
Just bought one of these partly because of you sir !!!!!! $200 very good shape
Also put your effects through the clean channel on full. It don't just smoke the drums, it's smokes his ears too
Its best to play outside. When I gig with this amp, I lay it on its back and point it straight up at the ceiling. In a small club it FILLS the place and doesn't blow anyones face off.
Very true. That's how I do it.
right on!
*”Once it starts barking, it BARKS!”* hahah I can see why you’re outside on the farm!! 🤣🤣
Love this vid, your energy is great!
i think they are the best pedal platforms of all time. turn that tube dyamics all the way up and it never drives.....i've never had an overdrive or distortion sound bad thru the clean channel.
I don't play pedals but I've always heard this amp takes them well.......I take that back , I have run a Rogue delay through this amp. I set it up so low you can't even hear the effect, but clicking it on gives an amp a "sparkle".
whip's cheap guitars I do the same thing! I use delay more as an additional reverb
Couldn't agree more... I used one of these in a classic 70s rock band a few years ago & the other guitarist had a Marshall DSL. On a small stage it wasn't always clear which amp belonged to which guitar player, so I would often get guys coming up to me & saying how great I sounded through the Marshall. Then I explain that I was playing through the cheap solid state amp. That shocked people!
I love it! Thanks JRG.
Sweet amp!
Peavey, well, older Peavey pre son take over Peavey built awesome amps and guitars, and it's never got the respect it really deserved.
Unfortunately the quality of the equipment has dive bombed since the son took over.
If Peavey Sr had any pride for his long term legacy, he'd spank the boy's ass and send him to bed!! NOW MISTER!!
Great review Whip!
Jack
Yeah, the old stuff was built to last forever.
The son is a fool. Saw a doc w/ him in it.
Russ
That's right! I forgot about that. It was that series..ahh..."Undercover Boss"?? Where some CEO of a company would get professionally disguised, and pretend he was just hired, so he could hear what the people working there thought of the company.
Bro, thanks for reminding me, I'll see if I can find a link and post it here, so others can see what a brown paper bag of smashed assholes this clown town apprentice is!!
The father put out high quality stuff!! Peavy guitars from his era, and amps were as good or better than the Big Guns stuff was back then. There are some smoking hot guitars from, Peavey!!
Here's the link bros, you MUST watch this and see what a fart stain in the jolly green giant's moontandinis (underwear) Hartley's son out law is, and how he made specific promises to some awesome employees, then when the show was over, he ...well, watch it and see.Plug your nose!

Thanks for posting that link!!!
This guy's neighbors LOVE him.😂
Yeah,,I got the very same amp..And I just litterlly love it !!! I'm thinking about cutting it down and just making a "Amp Head" out of it..
It would be quite versatile.
Oh yeah,,I forgot. My nephew, just "gave it to me too! The speaker didn't work so then he brought & gave me a Peavey 212 4ohm big ol' cabinet (on casters). (had to wire to 8ohm) But,I don't like the sound that comes out of it. Speakers have big square magnets and just don't sound good. But, later,I found a 412 Marshal cab for $50. ,got it,and love it. So now I need to sell the Peavey cab.(wife says I have too much stuff) And my nephew said it is mine to do whatever I want with & he does not want it back.
You can buy the Peavey Supreme XL, its basically the Head-Version of the Bandit with some more extra features. It also sells for ridicioulously low amounts of money, its out of production for some years now.
These old Bandits are far more versatile than many would figure. I have one of the silver-side Bandit 112’s that predates yours…running an Eminence “Texas Heat” 12” speaker, though a Celestion GB-style speaker would also yield good results. The gain section on mine has had a “Mesa” mod done to where it doesn’t mud up as much when it’s pushed, but the clean channel is far more useful. I’ve gigged with it in the past, had no problem keeping up with my buddy’s Blackstar.
Good tone does NOT always require spending big bucks…
IT should ne called THE SMARTMAN AMP !
Thanks
In high school me and the other guitarist from jazz band did Star Spangled Banner at a pep rally. Both had Bandits using clean channel exactly like Whip. It sounded great!
The Smart man marshall.
I've owned 2 Bandits. Great loud amps. Current amp is an old Peavey Special 130. Even louder than the Bandit with great tone.
I had a special 130 once! Mine had a vented scorpion speaker and it was dangerously loud. Great amp.
i used to have that same sheffield transtube, regret selling it.
I bought one new in 98' and could never get what I wanted out of it...I sold it too.
Dude! I got that exact same jacket and flannel shirt. Awesome!
"Don't use the lead channel???" 😒
Precisely, one of the best featurers of these amps is the lead channel. The lead channel of these amps sounds amazing, even much better than many full tube amps.
absolutely
Yes, it sounds great and produces a fat wall of sound but it doesstart to create ugly feedback sooner on high spl :(
Exactly, as compared to the lead channel on this amp the clean channel he's raving about is just ok. But I don't play boomer rock either?🤷♂️
I agree 100%! His style, goal, is different, looking for 60s plexi cranked loud middle gain tone. I like the gain channel the best. It thumps, huge tone, keep gain at noon or below. If turn gain up too much, then gets fizzy, but kept low it nails hard rock, 80s metal, more - GnR, VH, Dokken, Kiss, Poison, Billy Idol, AcDc, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Priest, Ozzy, Whitesnake. Most underrated gain channel. Probably cause people turn gain to max and say fizzy, sucks, yes true cause you turned gain too high.
I've got a Bandit Solo Series and I absolutely love it. When I want to rock, the neighborhood is involved in the concert. Got it 14 years ago in 2006 for $65.
If you play it they will come
Except the dog
My first new amp was a bandit 212 back in 1995. It was amazing. It also had a 100 watt out so you could hook up a stack too. Still my favorite amp.
Was tat the special 212?
FYI: these amps have been made in China for the last 15 years. Only the old ones were made in America.
All the silver stripes, and half of the reds were American made, as were ALL the tele, the solo series, 65 ......It was sometime in the red stripe production, they changed badging to "designed in USA" instead of designed and manufactured in USA. Good point though, I should have covered it a bit more....if you buy a new one or a later red stripe....its not USA made. Thanks.
excuse me ...."all the Teal "
Bill what a shame
A partial copy and paste from the Peavey forum thread "History and Timeline of the Peavey Bandit":
Solo Series Bandit 112
(1989-1995) The Solo Series Bandit 112 introduced many new features, the most notable being an increase in power to 80 watts RMS and a choice between Peavey's Scorpion speaker and Peavey's newly introduced Sheffield speaker. Many of the innovations that would later be branded as "Transtube" were included in the Solo Series Bandit 112, but the name "Transtube" had not been adopted yet. There have been several different versions of the Solo Series Bandit 112 but they all share the same manual and the same control layout. One of the more popular variations is known as the "Teal Stripe" or "Blue Stripe" Bandit due to a blue horizontal stripe below the control panel. The Solo Series Bandit 112 was made in Meridian MS USA.
Transtube Series Bandit 112
(1995-1999) The Transtube Series Bandit 112 formally introduced Peavey's proprietary "Transtube" technology that allows a solid state amplifier to perform more like a vacuum tube amplifier. Central to the Transtube concept is a patented "power brake" that allows the user to control the amount of power required for dynamic range compression from the power amp, from 100% all the way down to 10%, thus enabling the amplifier to acheive power amp compression without running at full volume. The Transtube Series Bandit 112 was made in Meridian MS USA and came stock with the Sheffield 1230 speaker. Notably, it was also the first Bandit to have an external speaker jack, allowing external speakers to be run instead of or in parallel with the internal speaker. Running into 8 ohms, power is still 80 watts RMS, but running into 4 ohms (the equivalent of using the internal 8 ohm speaker together with an 8 ohm extension speaker) the power is increased to 100 watts RMS. Due to the horizontal strip of chrome underneath the controls, this version is commonly referred to as the "Silver Stripe" Bandit, but due to the black color and square shape, it is sometimes called the "Blackbox" Bandit (not to be confused with "Blackface", which refers to F*nder products and/or performances in the style of Al Jolson...)
Transtube Series II Bandit 112 Made in USA
(2000-2004) With the Transtube Series II, the metal corners and input jacks that had been standard on all Peavey Bandits up until this time were replaced by plastic corners and plastic jacks. Due to a color scheme incorporating a red stripe across the front of the amplifier, many people refer to the Transtube Series II Bandit as the "Redstripe Bandit". During this time Peavey attempted to adopt a new company logo, and moved away from their traditional "pointy" logo. The new logo came to be known as the "Block Logo". The Block Logo was only used for a limited period of time, and the Block Logo Redstripe Bandits represent the last Peavey Bandits to be made in the USA.
Transtube Series II Bandit 112 Made in China
(2004-2005) This amp is cosmetically nearly identical to the USA version, so it is also referred to as "Redstripe Bandit", but there are several differences between the US built Redstripes and the Chinese ones. First, the Chinese version says, "Designed in the USA" on the front, while the actual USA version says "Designed and Made in the USA". Second, the speaker in the Chinese version is either unlabelled, or is labelled "Blue Marvel", a Peavey code for speakers made outside of Peavey and then rebranded as Peavey. All of the USA Redstripe Bandits shipped from the factory with US made Sheffield 1230 speakers. Another obvious difference is that all Chinese Redstripe Bandits have the "pointy logo", while most - but not all - of the USA Redstripe Bandits shipped with Block Logos.
Peavey Bandit with Transtube Technology
(2006-current) The current version of the Bandit is made in China. It is the first Bandit to incorporate a "simulated output" for recording purposes. This simulated output runs independently of the amp's internal speaker, allowing silent recording. The simulated output can also be used instead of or in addition to a traditional microphone. In this version the spring reverb has been replaced by a digital reverb circuit, and the 10% to 100% T. Dynamics knob is replaced by a 3-way switch, allowing operation at 25%, 50%, and 100% power. Metal corners are reintroduced, but the footswitch is no longer included with the amp and must be purchased separately.
I get something similar with my Tryanor YCV40. The clean is louder than the distortion and gets just incredibly crunchy. Very satisfying !
Nice!
hahahahaha... Dog like "Oh my god, there we go again... :p Excellent demo bro, thanks a lot!
She loves loud music!
Thanks for the présentation m'y first Peavey bandit 75 and after i got silver strip bandit, and the red strip bandit IT is the loud
I have the same amp Peavey bandit silver strype but start to like the clean channel and make want to by m'y Peavey silver strype to the T dynamic cool break Up
It's Marshall sound for cheap !
I always love Peavey for making good feat at fair Price ,thanks Hartley Peavey, for making great gear at fair Price we are not Rockstar we can afford nothing
More than Peavey bandit 112!🎉
WTF this guy should be in the middle of nowhere building a homestead... not reviewing amps?
Just so we're keeping track of what a Transtube Bandit can do:
1) It's a good sounding pedal platform that you can dial some Fender vibes in and out using the Tube Dynamics
2) You can absolutely dial in a sick chug on the distortion channels
3) Then there's this trick where you can crank the cleans and dial up the TD and get it into Marshall territory
In 2024, I still don't think there's a more flexible combo amp, at anywhere near the price. I got mine for $200 at GC so the price has gone up but it's still cheaper by a lot than a Katana
Peavey amp + an ipod = JUKEBOX, not for play guitar.
I have a Bandit 112 Red Stripe. I’ve been using it for 23 years 🎸😎
god that sounds awful. so fuzzy.
You're butthole is fuzzy
thats the best part
I didn't hear any "fuzz". This fellow is right ... a very dynamic amp with excellent LOUD crunch when played on that clean channel.
its probably your speaker, all i heard was crunch not fuzz
What did you listen to it through? A laptop's cheap built in speakers on max??
dog casually wanders through giving the "you said we were gonna go for a walk but the guitar thing is cool too...I guess" look.
If I play loud in the house she howls.
I love my Crate CPB 150. It's a Great Crate. Loud as hell and the gain turned up sounds like a tube amp. 150 watts.
Looks like those Peavey's are underated.. Great review, thanks for cool the tip Whip!
You bet. Thanks for the comment.
I love my US Bandit, gigged with it for years with a 12" extension cab
Sometimes I use my VHT ultra 6, as 1x12 cab. They do sound good with an extra speaker! Thanks JH!
You are correct!!!!!!
I have a 212 bandit,
200 watts when i add a 2x12" 8 ohm ext speaker cabinet to the sucker.
The power factor actually goes up when I hook up the external cab!!!!
THE FUCKIN THING IS INSANE!!!!!!
Subbed you as your vid is true!
ROCK ON"!
I bought this amp a couple years ago from Dave. Loved it! He showed me a few tricks on getting it to sound good. I later sold it to another Peavey enjoyer, and bought myself a 2x12 Bandit.... Lovely amp, but it was actually TOO LOUD! Shoulda stuck with the first one! Lol. Thanks Dave for the good memories made with that amp, and for your Epiphone SL review. Bought that as my first electric guitar because of your review!
I had a couple of these when I was in high school (1990-93).
A buddy of mine hacked up the combo cabinet and turned it into a head!
I ran it through a decent 4 by 12 cab, and it was killer!
Thats what I'm talking about!
The resonance button has rge function performed by the deep switch on other amps.
I just picked up the same silver stripe for $150 CDN. I really dig the clean tones and mild OD channel. The high gain setting is over the top for me, very good demo!
turn down the Dynamic knob to about 30% and crank the clean channel up, You'll get nic break up.
@@whipscheapguitars2856 Thanks for the tip. Dynamics is what separates solid state from tube amps: 2D vs 3D. I am very impressed with how responsive this amp is to my strumming hand pressure. I watched a lot of videos, including Johan Segeborn's, Shane's from "In the Blues", and yours before I bought it. Thanks for posting your awesome informative video!
Thanks MD. I think the peavey Transtube technology is the single biggest mistake in marketing that Peavey has ever made. They totally failed to get across how the feature worked and how it can be used. People just pushed the switch to the distortion channel and think THAT is what the transtube circuit sounds like.......It can sound SO GOOD but nobody knows how to use it.
