One easy way I've seen over the years, to get seed pods or small seeds out of the seed pods, is just to put the dry seed head in a bag or container. let it continue drying and some seeds will come out on their own, others will come out when you shake the seed head (because it has become even dryer). And finally, when you're really ready to plant some seeds, then crush the seed head and just take any seeds that come with the dried plant material and plant them all together.
I planted some of my venus flytrap seeds [flowered ones from b and q] and within a suprising 2 days [the seeds were left ripe for a long time] there were already 4 baby traps on it, also amazing video!

I had a Drosera that I had purchased that had produced seeds. I thought the plant was hardy enough to survive the winter but it wasn’t. I was pretty dismayed until one day when I was looking and noticed that one of the seeds produced the year before had sprouted into a plant. That was pretty exciting and I’m already planning arrangements to move the plant indoors this winter.

I really like your composition of VFTs, sarracenia together with other greens, stones and that little stem. Its exactly what im planning on doing but im not yet sure about the pot size as i wanted to go big. I might go with something similar your size as i would like to be able to safe them anytime there might be bad weather, as they'll be outside all year. Just planted my first ever VFT-seeds. hope they hatch :D

I am trying cultivating some long tailed sphagnum in trays from some live bagged which I bought but I notice on some of your bog pots that you have a much finer moss growing in them. Could you tell me please what sort of moss is this and does it just grow on the peat or do you cultivate it seperately. Also have you had much success cultivating sphagnum outside?
Thank you, I appreciate your comment, nice to see fellow UK hobbyists even new ones :) I use long fibred Sphagnum moss which I either purchase from a local garden centre or B&Q and some stuff seems finer than others (I also sometimes cut up the sphagnum for propagations as I find it easier to handle). I do cultivate my own sphagnum outside which I have in a large tray which I have lined with peat and it grows on top. However I have far better success growing and harvesting Sphagnum from pots with plants in and it grows so much better. Hope this helps :)

Thank you for sharing this video and taking time to make it you've given me all the information that I needed and I'm going to sow my first venus fly trap seeds with thanks to your help alone as this is my first carnivorous plant and maybe in a while I'll have another few? Also what you said regarding eBay etc when it comes to buying seeds I've been let down a few times now knowing they are fake ones out there because I've been growing plants for a long time but never had no success sowing the seeds when buying them from eBay and that goes for bonsai trees and one time a Black Rose so I commend you on your very informative information as well as your knowledge on this particular type of plant group as well as confirming I was not completely crazy when I thought that the seeds I ordered were fake, that info will be very helpful to people wishing to buy such seeds for the first time! Advice please. I have put my venus fly trap in a cold room to have its rest. But the plant has become very yellow. I keep it damp dose it need more light or could it be dying. Eany advice would be greatly appreciate.
1:30 - I've never seen the VFT such a deep red, especially on the outside of the plant. I wonder whether your VFTs are getting enough nutrition? My traps (started from one single tiny plant 5 years ago) spend the summer outdoors here in northern New England in at least 5 hrs direct sunlight; the traps turn ruby red, then positively gorge on flying insects (wasps, hornets, horse flies,) and crawling things (spiders, daddy longlegs, ants, earwigs) etc. Point is that the plants grow huge with at least 8-10 new leaves/gobblers (my son's term for the trap part) growing in on each plant at any one time; I think I'm doing something right. I've split-out and re-potted at least 18-20 plants, selling and giving away my excess.
Hi, these flytraps just have these traits. It isn’t to do with nutrients. Typicals can vary a lot. Like you my plants feast during the summer and have access to hundreds of insects and are often full. This video was a few years ago now but that typical flytrap is the only one I’ve had with that lovely dark colour, quite a special plant. Thanks for watching
For seeds I use a mixture of peat and perlite in about a 80:20 percentage. However alternatively I sometimes just use 100% peat or sphagnum moss for seeds
Thank you! Personally I don't feed my seedlings however young seedlings can be fed with small bits of fish food in their traps or blood worms to give them a head start. VFT from seed are very slow growing but you could start feeding once plants gain a few traps
Hi. I cut my pods from my plant and never realise that I needed to wait longer to plant. Can I remove them from my pot and let them dry out in the sun, then repot? Pllllleeease help me
If you have already sown the seeds then you can’t take them off the soil and let them dry out as it is then unlikely they will germinate. If the seeds were ripe when you sowed them then there is a chance they will germinate. If they were not ripe then it is unlikely they will do anything
Flytrap seeds can be sown pretty much all year round. I usually sow in the autumn after seed harvest because I use my own seed but if you have purchased seed then any time of the year is fine (you may need a grow light if you sow in winter as germinated plants will need light)

I have been trying to cross pollinate mine manually (with a paint brush) and still have not gotten a seed .is it a guessing game?or is there a select number of day's to wait after it opens?
Most carnivorous plants seeds must be sown on the surface of the soil, never bury the seeds, the seeds from most genus are very small. Seeds germinate on top of the soil and often need sunlight or a bright spot to germinate
Typical flytraps often have red inside their traps. However some can be all green. This flytrap is not a cultivar, it is just a typical with super red colouration inside

A piece of paper or a small salt shaker should help to disperse the seeds

Red traps are good, it means they are getting enough sunlight.

Do carnivorous plants have shallow roots? I can see Sarracenia in a shallow suiban, like a forest. Great video!
Some genus and species do yes, Pinguicula for example have shallow roots however Sarracenia and flytraps often have long root systems

I would suggest waiting a few months or even up to a year until your plants have traps that are a little bigger for better feeding and handling

Yes, carnivorous plants germinate best when on top of the soil, they do not like to be buried as this will prevent germination

You wait until the stigma is fuzzy in the center, this is how you know the flower is receptive. You then transfer pollen at this point
