STUCK ENGINE On My Dad's CHEAP New Tractor... Let's Try To Free It
Вставка

- Auctions are a great place to pick up old tractors and this one was no different. My dad picked up this 1929 McCormick-Deering 1020 with a seized engine to use for a lawn ornament. It turns out the engine is in really good shape so we're going to get it running again. This isn't the best way to get an engine unstuck (it'll probably destroy a modern engine) but these old things have massive castings that hold up to some crazy loads... like shocking the flywheel over and over.

Your dad is ridiculously smart. His ability to understand mechanical things is wild.
C'mon Jr, gotta keep us updated on this project. Beyond curious to see what Dad Ross and Co. comes up with to get it going!
Any video with your Dad is a great video. Cheers to you both.
This felt much more violent in real life then how it looked on camera 😂
The whole tractor was bouncing into the air 😳
@@WatchJRGo That damn ole tractor like a bucking bronco!
Dad rode that bucking bull all the way to the 8 second whistle.
@@WatchJRGo Next time, try pulling it in whatever functions as top gear in that thing to give more mechanical advantage to the wheels. I see a lot of people making this same mistake... yes, first/low *does* work best for bump/push starting an otherwise functioning engine, since it will rotate the engine over faster (increasing the likelihood of it starting), and the massive weight of a car gives it enough momentum to get the engine to rotate several times even when the car is only going a couple mph. But for un-sticking a stuck engine, top gear is definitely the way to go.
If you think about it, the gear ratios work in reverse when the driven end is swapped... in low gear/low range, the engine has to make many revolutions to get one revolution of the wheel, vs. in high gear/high range, the engine makes fewer revolutions per one revolution of the wheel. Or, looking at it another way, consider going down a mountain in a vehicle; gravity has a much easier time accelerating the vehicle down the mountain if you're in top gear vs. if you're in first gear, because in first, the engine has to rotate much faster. So in the tractor, if you stick it in top gear and pull it, the wheels have more leverage to rotate the engine over more slowly.
Two comments- #1. Your dad is awesome. Clearly an engineer. #2. Your dad and your brother are undeniably related. They look identical (I noticed in the cab over video)
All I have to say is: You and Jared need to spend as much time with your dad as possible! I can tell that he loves been around you two!
What a cool old tractor, and what 93 years old. I hope you guys get it unstuck and running eventually. Pretty amazing that the bores and everything else seems to be clean and unrusted after all this time sitting outside. When I was a teenager I loved old military trucks from ww2 and had a 41 early power wagon and some friends with similar trucks. You'd find one that had been sitting in a field for 20 years and throw some gas and battery in it most of the time with some points filing etc it would start and run. I remember a Carry All my buddy found that had 3 cracks in the block, milk shake for oil, and all the instruments were missing the needles. He got it to run with fresh oil and a tuneup and eventually it actually ran pretty good, didn't leak, and had oil pressure and one working rear brake. I think eventually he threw a better engine in it but it was amazing it ran and moved at all.
Good luck with it, I bet you get it going.
Dad needs his own channel.
I love videos with your dad in them. That dude is so smart.
Can we have a full tour of your dads shirt pockets? I’m certain he can diagnose and fix most problems with his EDC
I bet a lot of us viewers are EDC nerds.
My grandpa had one of those, I learned to drive a tractor on it. Same year 29' McCormick Deering. It had been converted from steel wheels to rubber tires, and had a box welded on behind the seat for carrying chains and stuff in, but otherwise looked the same. I helped my grandpa cut lots of firewood using the tractor to pull logs out of the woods, he had a small trailer made from the back half of an international scout we would pull behind the tractor too for all kinds of hauling around his property. Be careful of that hand crank, I think I came close to breaking my arm several times while starting it.
Damn, back to back episodes with, Dad! We're not worthy, we're not worthy (sorry, but he's the real star when he is on the episode)!!!
His dad is such a natural teacher. I always pay more attention when he's on.
I have both big brothers to your 10-20, a 15-30, and a 22-36 McCormick-Deering and they both run. On yours it still could be stuck pistons or even stuck valves or both. Might want to take the valve cover off and make sure the valves are free... if there is little wear on the guides it doesn't take much moisture to stick them solid. Good luck with it and hope to see it running in the near future.
your dad would flourish in a Mad Max world
Pops needs his own channel. Great stuff.
JR- Your dad is a treasure. He has a ton of practical knowledge and he reminds me of my father who is a few years older. It's a pleasure to watch these videos with the two of you interacting.
Any content with your dad is UA-cam Gold. Makes me wonder about the John Deere crawler loader you had on the channel a fee years ago?
Those tires will never wear out.
Somewhere, a donk aficionado is eyeing up those rears for a future project. Go big or go home
Daddies back and he got tractors! High speed 1929! Seriously they are the coolest rims every.
Episodes with your Dad are the best! What doesn't that guy know?
This is a piece that deserves a very light sanding and clear coat Patina preservation!!!
Dad Ross is the best! So glad to see him in another interesting vid. Keep up the great work!
This is a great video. I’ve always said if I was a bachelor I’d weigh 300 lbs and have a yard full of old tractors and cars. They are too much fun. Thanks for sharing!
Very cool tractor. I always appreciate videos with your family in it!
I'm glad that you sold your building, especially if it means that we're going to be seeing more episodes with your dad and brother. The best episodes on your channel are the rough cut and impromptu videos of auction finds with your family. They are way more entertaining and fun to watch than the car detailing and junk supercar videos. Get back to your roots!
Could listen to your dad all day. When’s the next shop update? Watching from the England keep up the good work
Man your dad has some cool stuff. Love your channel Mr JR.
I found your channel because of the tractors you used to work on. Bring back the tractors!
Family videos on this channel are some of my favorites.
Always love videos with WatchJRSenior, I hope to see you and your Dad working on this next Spring and get it up and running, an almost 100 year old tractor running again would be cool!
You need to get this tractor running
Loving the access covers for the big end bearings-BMW should have used that design on their V8 and V10 engines 😂
Love the videos where it's both JR and his Dad. So much knowledge and such a pleasant demeanor.
I bought a shed found 1936 McDeering (?) F-12 that was seized up. Took the oil pan off and disconnected the rods from the crank. Tied a ;piece of binder twine to the end of each rod rod and jerked until they all moved. Put it back together, pulled it down the driveway, she fired and ran for years.
The two of you is an awesome Duo for the 'old stuff' Amazing to be working with your dad. He has a lot of experience. Interesting
Video with pops in it are the best JR videos.
The guy just knows stuff, everything !!
That's just CRAZY how clean that bottom end and everything is.
Now, I really want to see you guys getting the old tractor running!
Love the videos when you're working with your dad! And that tractor is AWESOME!!
Best JR episode I've seen, keep it coming. Love that old stuff.
hey!!! Mr. Ross!!! good to see you.. love these episodes, john..
What an awesome old tractor! Keep us updated!!👍👍
I love old tractors. My uncle collected them. He had a few Waterloo boys Deere and his 1910 Case IH steel wheel. Love his hit and miss deeres.
When I was a kid my dad had one of these sitting in the yard. We used to play on it. It never ran in my memory. Not sure where it got to, I believe a collector bought it many years ago. Would be cool to see this run.
Another classic, looking forward to y'all getting it running.
The Ross Boys. I think you're on to something there, JR.
Continue the "oil-in-the-cylinders" -method for a few days.
get the head off and check for stuck valves.
That's the way I'd do it.
Could the (crank)shaft be locked just at the rear bearing? (before the clutch?)
Nice video. Thanks for uploading!
Love when you have your dad on here. Love that guy.
I love videos with your pop.......the apple doesn't fall from the tree :-)
Dads are freakin awesome!
I would love to see that running again
This is the type of watchjrgo i missed. heck yeah
Keep us updated on this project when your dad gets back to it. Cool old tractor
Now you're talkin! Looking forward to seeing more of this on the channel!
Always good to see our history brought back life and if anyone can do it it's your dad !!! Glad your there JR to hold his light and hand him the wrenches !!! Lol. Probably like your childhood !!!
Beautiful! I live in London (no tractors at all), but I’ve friends who live in Devon (West country), and we’ve often been to shows where they have old tractors. John Deere, Field Marshal and Roadless, brilliant 👏👏
I mean no disrespect to you JR, but I love videos with your Dad. He is a very neat, interesting and smart guy, your are lucky to have such a nice Dad.
So cool I love stuff like this it will run its so clean on the inside like it was all rebuild
I have a carb that is darn similar to that one - I've been carrying it to car shows for like 15 years but never could figure out how to ID it. I just know it's a brass tractor carb and it weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 lbs. Just in scrap brass it's worth a few bucks. Same cast in marking on it, the biggest difference is I think the side towards the front of the tractor has something mine doesn't.
I'd love to see you guys get this running.
i ❤ your dad’s new old tractor!
Your dad got get this going .
After you saw slight movement while pulling it forward I wonder why you did not pull it backwards in reverse gear=“rocking” it sometimes works wonders.
@watchjrgo my kids have the exact same tractor in their school playground in FEILDING, New Zealand. It has been a fixture for many years.
Great to see one complete.
Marty T will get it going for you !
Your old man is super cool.
Maybe you ought to try one of those mixes that Vice Grip Garage likes to pour down into the cylinders to free up engines? I think he includes Brut after shave!
And on today's episode fonzy jumps the shark
Definitely do another video on this tractor with the family and get it running 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice to see you working with PA again. He makes an excellent teacher
welcome back pops
All the other commenters stole my thunder. LOVE the dad episodes, especially this one. More dad stuff please.
Bummer! really hoped to see it live again :D
I love watching the videos with your father in them. I really miss mine.
Just thinking out loud... do you think there is a transmission lock for parking? Like modern cars we use the PARK... maybe a seperate park lever? When they set it up using the belt drive for a saw mill... they don't want it to move... the must lock the transmission? Just a thought? Craig
That is fantastic! What a boss dad.
There's one of those sunk up to its axles at my family's farm. It's been sitting there my entire life plus some (well over 40 years).
another great video from JR. thanks
Dad Ross episodes are an automatic thumbs up!
Cool old tractor, it would be neat to see it run.
Jack it up and rock the wheels back and forth everyday. Use high gear. Spray Free All in the cylinders. Diesel won't do much.
Be really cool video if we could get a tour of Dad's business and see what all they do there I know I'm very curious love any video with the family in it.
Very cool old tractor!
Papa Ross is the man. I have to ask where did he get all this knowledge ?? is he self taught, or did he goto school for this ??
This brings me back to the crawler you had forever ago. Whatever happened to that?
Seeing Dad in a video is as AUTOMATIC 👍! He should have his own channel (no disrespect to JR, of course).
The old man needs a channel.
Some of the early tractors had worm gear rear end, making it very difficult to turn the engine by the wheel
Yes. My Fordson is that way. So rusty the hand crank is frozen.
Senior really needs his own channel everything old gets remade…
Seeing it run in it’s current state would look so much cooler than if it was fully restored.
Great video, hope we see more about the tractor! And how's the car crusher doing?
More tractors please!!!!!🚜
In this episode, filmed while JR looks for a new WatchJRHome, we see WatchSRPlow in the least predictable way!
That camshaft looked so nice, glad you're going to try to get it running.
That tractor has a lot of stuff on the engine that looks the same as the regular 20 farmall I think the engine is the same .
Very cool !
Ouch! If it aint broke we'll fix it till it is
got to say that new modern tracker tech is crazy and man that engine is so many horses...lol
KC??? Bring that back home! LOL 🤣😂
That's the kind of challenge that I cut my teeth on in my 40 years of wrenching on all kinds of stuff. I had a dirt bike engine eas stuck after sitting for years.
I put marvel mystery oil in the spark plug hole and would sit on it after work and rock it back and forth in gear . About the third I was thinking about making it a parts donor and I heard the engine move. Kept rocking it until a full revolution was made and then kicked it over. Eventually got it running.
I'm still on the edge of my seat waiting for sn update on the forklift.
I would go ATF after the 1st shot of diesel on the pistons. Diesel is good for penetration and cleaning, but bad for lubrication.
I wanted to see it running !
