1929 McCormick Deering FIRST START In 50 Years *It's Alive*

- Auctions are a great place to pick up old tractors and this one was no different. My dad picked up this 1929 McCormick-Deering 1020 with a seized engine to use for a lawn ornament. It turns out the engine is in really good shape so we're going to get it running again. This isn't the best way to get an engine unstuck (it'll probably destroy a modern engine) but these old things have massive castings that hold up to some crazy loads... like shocking the flywheel over and over.

We need more of Dad. The wealth of knowledge he possess is incredible.
I agree and have said it many times. His dad is what an American is!!!
That is the truth he is real badass
Jr is 100 times more the mechanic than his dad tho . He clearly did not learn from him
Yep! Folks. Appreciate & learn from our wise elders while they are here with us. I wish I was nearer to my Dad & Mom the last 10 years of their life to ask questions, hear & record their stories & absord more of their wisdom & vast knowledge! I miss them so much! Right on JR, keep hanging out with them! Paul from S. Central TX.
@@harryfp1494 why?
I love how he jumped in with his old man strength and cranked it like it was nothing. 💪💪💪
I laughed so hard watching JR try :D
I laughed my ass off on that. Just goes to show, no matter how old you get, dad will always whoop your ass.
@@xPreatorianx1 My pop would do the same thing...as he aged though, the roles reversed. Miss my pops so much to be weaned by just being around him.
When pops tells you, you need to put some rocks in your pockets! LOL!!! Best line ever!
If JR has to start it, I'm thinking there an impact wrench adapter for cranking in future episodes. 😅
Your Dad showed "Old Man Strength" on that crank! Ya don't mess with the old man!!!! LOL
Yup, old man strength is something else 💪
Yep, old man strength is why you never fork with an old man.
Love your dad’s enthusiasm on these old machines! He won the crank start ‘competition’!
Mate, your Dad is truely a national treasure
This is super cool and sounds amazing. Your dad is a wealth of knowledge! He really proved his old man strength when you tried to turn it over and couldn't match his speed.
I take my previous statement back John Ross is not the shop teacher we all wisher had dad is the real shop teacher we all wish we had thanks for sharing him with us!!
Your Dad definitely has the old man strength going
Right ?? He got it going !
WatchSRGo!
You and Dad work well together. Being 70, I enjoy the son and dad interaction. So much history between you. Too bad you could not put your show near his!
Dad-strength is a real thing. I was always amazed at how strong my dad was for a guy that never worked out. Single-handedly pushed a 1963 4x4 truck off of me after it rolled onto me - saved my life with his dad-strength!
That dad power and knowledge is unmatched. Cranked on it like it was nothing
Your pops is an American legend! So many people like him have been lost.we need to cherish them.
Don't get me wrong, I still want you to get a big shop, but the variety on your channel has been incredible. The family videos lately are some of my favorites.
Agreed.
I was watching Big JR crank that thing and getting tired....like "JR put the camera down and help yer daddy..."
Then I saw JR try and crank that thing and not even get close to where his dad came and thought - "Yep, the old guys can still whip the kids even today."
Unfortunately the quality of the great American working class dad / teacher is fading away. Your dad is a dying breed JR...appreciate him every chance you get.
I love how your dad was showing you up on cranking the motor over... you better hit the gym JR! :D
Your old man would of been a hell of a teacher . The way he explains stuff is great .
Your dad is a UA-cam goldmine! He needs his own channel. He is a walking textbook📚
I try to explain to my wife the simple joy and satisfaction from seeing any "will it start" videos on yt.
And a shout out to the crappy fill spouts on gas cans these days! Supposed to be "safe" but you spill more than you get in the tanks!
Take in these moments, brother. Hopefully you will have this video and be able to watch it in 40 years.
You 2 guys are a walking encyclopedia
Dad showing you up on your own channel. We need more videos with your dad.
JR you need to make channel just for your dad, he is so awesome!
JR you are so lucky to have a father like you do. No father is perfect, but when you see a great one it’s easy to recognize. Love seeing you guys wrench together.
Your dad is strong af. Tell him to start a youtube channel. I really like
watching him:)
Young men have no idea how invaluable it is to have a Mr.Ross (dad) in your life.
You are a lucky man to have been raised by such an amazing, knowledgeable man.
Note to self: no arm-wrestling with JR's dad. That man is in beast mode!
Your father is great JR. I could listen to him explain how machines worked all day. He has a real charm about him.
Great job getting the tractor running. I always love episodes with your dad. He is a natural!
Dad is like an explanation machine. Give him a problem and turn him on! He can’t stop explaining! It’s utterly fantastic and I can see the genetics in action in you! 😊👍👍
I love watching old engines come back to life like this.
You need a second channel just with dad. I spent many hours with my wife's grandfather out in rhe garage and really enjoy watching you work with your dad.
Your old man cranked that like a pro. JR definitely needs some rocks in his pockets, or hit the gym 😂😂. Good work out there.
I've heard of Armstrong Steering, but your dad is the Heavy Duty Armstrong Starter!
That's nothing! If you've seen videos of #Tiger 131 at The Tank Museum in the UK, two fellas are needed to crank that big Maybach engine!
I love listening to your dad. I’m from Germany and sometimes, for me it’s hard to understand fast speaking Americans but not, when he’s talking m😅
Hope there will be more episodes with him.
Best regards, guys
Selling the shop and freeing up some time to spend with your father was the best decision you could have made JR. The sure made those things to be maintained and to run forever!
This show should belong to his father! Not only does he have incredible knowledge but his strength is like a beast!!! lol I have never seen anyone cranking an engine over like that before
It brought me joy when your Dad's strength came through. He knew the exact right technique to turn it. My Dad the same type of thing to me working on my truck not to long ago. No matter how old we get, our Pops always seem to know more. Great video JR.
I love your Dad’s enthusiasm for the old stuff. He is so excited.
I've seen so many old tractors parked in the trees. Watching one come back to life is the coolest.
More, more, more please. This was a fantastic video watching Father and Son working together on a great piece of vintage machinery. I could watch videos like this all day.
You should get your dad a superman t shirt the man is a beast 😂 his wealth of knowledge is amazing, a Sunday special with your dad getting the tractor completely sorted would be great viewing
Being smart and having common sense is essential for working on old equipment. Good on both of you.
As a kid I had an uncle who had a large ranch .He had al kinds of stuff like this including a combine it was huge I was 12 at the time and i was in awe of it i would crawl all over it learning how it did what it did .Of course he would yell at me get off that thing you'll get hurt Damn it .well eventually I got him to let me try to start all of his old farming equipment .I spent one whole summer tearing into the tractors and all the things that go with them fixing and cleaning all of it up to me it was great fun to make all that old stuff work again .Finally i got him to let me tackle that old combine all those belts and wheels and cutter heads and conveyor belts .I spent 2 weeks cleaning and lubing and freeing things up .now you have to remember this thing had sat for so long it had sunk into the ground almost a foot but the day finally came to try to start this monster it took me 2 days of trying every thing i knew to get it going .to no avail .on the third day my uncle comes out to see how i was doing I told him I was about to throw in the towel ,He laughed reached into his pocket an handed me a small part and asked me if i knew what it was for ,I thought for a minute then told him nope I got no clue he chuckled and walked to the engine and mounted it to the magneto then told me to start er up sure enough with a huff and puff of smoke it took right off .I climbed off and we stood back together and just watched it run for a minute or three then my uncle who was in his 70's climbed on board and started pushing pedals and pulling levers and this muli ton monster came to life and climbed out of it's grave .like a dinosaur waking up .I was in awe . my uncle shut it down and came over to me and said ok you got it running now leave it alone . The next summer I was back thinking I was going to be so much fun working with all these old tractors and other pieces of equipment but when i got there it was all gone every piece of it .I was now 15 years old and i was devastated .I go inside and asked where did it all go I was afraid he had scraped it all after all this stuff was 50 plus years old .but no he told me he had sold it all and hade gotten a good price for it .Then said come see what i bought with the money .so we got to the barn with my head hanging low bummed out thinking about all the things i was going to do that summer .we get to the barn go inside and i see this old car A 1956 ford two door and it looked brand new .He asked me well what do you think of that I stared for i minute then asked him why did you get that you don't drive anymore .Well i might not drive but your going to need a car soon enough so we though it would be a good wat to say thank you for being here and helping around the place then handed me the keys .that was in 1974 . I still miss that car almost as much as my Aunt and uncle .
What an interesting father, his knowledge is beyond impressive and you are a very lucky guy JR to have such a dad.
The senior Ross is one he||uva down-to-earth old-time mechanic -- that's my generation right there, folks!
Pops with the old man strength! 💪
We need more dad content. Great job!👍👍👍
I can't believe you can get a valve cover gasket for it. That startup was amazing! Get your Dad a toothpick!
Back in the early 1960’s my dad got a 1937 F14 Mcormic Deering tractor that was left in a field for at least 25 years. He brought it home and the engine was locked up. He poured Marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and let it sit for 2 weeks. Then used a wood dowel and hammer to get the pistons loose. New rings and some honing it was ready to start. My Dad cranked an cranked it but no pop. So he installed an aircraft inertia starter on the crank end. Spun the revs up and bingo! It fired up. He fully restored the tractor and added a home made plow. Dad used it to plow snow for 10 years. He later gave it away to a friend. I never saw the machine again. I would love to see one in person today but never have come across anyone owning an F14.
Alright, got it rolling finally, what a cool old antique and obviously Dad got it freed up. Bet it runs OK, watching now 👍😎
Hopefully we're driving it once the tank is clean! 🍻
Bringing old equipment back to life is awesome.
It's so cool to see purely mechanical machinery come alive a hundred years after it was new. No computers to foul things up, just pure mechanical knowledge.
Your old man’s a beast spinning that handle 💪🏻
Dude.....your father is cool AF....and he is so dang knowledgeable of ol' skool engineering......he's DA MAN....👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Man, those old machine sure are stout! Love to see em come back to life. Loving the variety of content JR, keep up the good work👍
.....this was a great example of a father/son moment....so cool...
The enthusiasm is contagious; watching those nests blow out the pipe was about the best thing I've seen in a while!
My dad would have called you a "Candy Ass" for the way you cranked that tractor. Your dad reminds of my dad and for the same reasons. An amazing mechanic and engineer.
No matter how old we get, dad always got that old man strength and ready to show you how its done 😂
Your Dad has terrific skills. So do you. GOD bless you and your family.
Seeing you work with your dad is just awesome. Don't forget those rocks!
I know your dad is younger than I am, but it just takes an old man to make stuff work. He spun that crank like a boss. Enjoy all the time you can with him.
Can’t you stay at your dads property and maybe build a shop there. The series with your dad are so awesome I personally cannot get enough of them. The knowledge your dad has and the knowledge you have is just mind blowing. You obviously inherited and learn a lot from him.
i agree...just build a new shop on dads property. looks like there is plenty of room. you could also add living area to the shop as well.
We see we're you got your passion for working on different things. We all should treasure our parents and grandparents. The wealth of knowledge .
Papa Ross!!! Seriously the best. Tell him thanks for taking time out of his day to share his knowledge with us!
WOW! Dad is 10 times stronger than son.
Your dad knew exactly what to do. Much talent and experience.
Aside from all of the mechanical and engineering knowledge your dad has, he is really good at presenting and explaining it too. He seems like a natural on camera. Would love to see more of him on the channel. Thanks for the great variety on your channel.
Your Dad is great! Now we know where you got that personality that we love so much.
Love watching you and your Dad work together.
Such a nice knowledgeable man.
Your dad is a great teacher he does a wonderful job explaining what he is doing and trying to achieve thanks for sharing i personally love these old tractors and seeing them brought back to life
I love JR's dad's excitement as he explains the workings of this tractor.
Love seeing these old tractors run again. I have rescued three myself. It’s super satisfying getting them running after they have been put out to pasture for years.
Having grown up in farm country, seeing this start-up and you working with your dad really made me smile. 😃
“A little ball peen massage”😂😂😂 I love this guy! Keep your dad on the channel please JR 🙏🏽
Crazy to think tractors basically look and work the same way 100 years later…
They're basically doing the same thing, just 500x the power and air conditioning 🚜
You forgot computer control.
You forgot 900x the useless extra electronics and parts
Except they're way bigger, way more expensive, incredibly overcomplicated, and needlessly computerized
💥 DAD comes through. Great video JR. The combination of your dad's patience, persistence and knowledge is outstanding! It's funny that your mom wanted it for decoration... and your dad gets it running! 😲😎 Awesome
I grew up around a few people like that, they are rare.
You are a lucky son ! Your Dad is brilliant and just a wonderful person !
And strong as on Ox !
So the train has found you again !
They sure built them different back in the day, and I’m talking about the tractor AND your Dad. Awesome to see them both up and running.
Ain’t nothing better spending time with dad the horn from a train in the background and getting a 1929 tractor to fired up !!👍🏻😎🇺🇸🦅
Your dad is super strong John! He was turning the crank with relative ease.
Everyone loves your dad, definitely need more dad content! He is awesome! Don't forget your rocks! LOL
I like your Dad videos. He looks like he get excited like you when he get something working.
I have been watching a few folks restoring old tractors! Its really good to see some of these old monsters come to life!
Probably one of my favorite videos in a while, that is not to say that your other videos aren't great. Love seeing old tech/mech being restored. Also, thanks for doing your best with the audio and video angles. As a viewer, I know we take a lot for granted and easily forget that there is actual work that goes into producing a polished video. Hope to see the tractor driving around in a future video.
I also thought it was a bit funny to see your pops pop like a party popper when his business cards went flying everywhere.
Oh man Jr! You gotta get those gains buddy! Nothing beats old man strength
Old tractors draped in christmas lights (that follows the contours of the machine) looks just great in the yard...
So great working with your dad!! Love the excitement on his face when it kicked
You would have to be a farmer who is an engineer like your dad to work this thing back in the day. Your dad has an amazing wealth of knowledge I can see where you got the tinkering bug from.
You need to create a channel for him and send a camera crew over there to start following him around he is a riot and a boat load of knowledge
Your Dad needs his own channel!
Dad has old man strength!
Ive been hoping to one day see one of the old McCormick tractors! McCormick was my grandmas side of the family! Happy to see it runs!!!
You’ve gotta be kidding me that thing still works!
This was great. Looks like dad was having a absolute ball playing with that tractor. And when it started and ran, that made dads day. It must have been fun participating in that revival. It’s amazing how some of these old lumps will start and run with just some fiddling. And that you can still get parts for them is incredible.
Your dad is very knowledgeable. You need a series of restore on the ole tractor 🚜
I only wish my own father, born on the farm in 1920, was alive so I could share this with him.
Watching JR struggle with that crank reminded me of when I was teaching my son at 11 how to change a tire. He couldn’t get the tire iron to budge while attempting to crack the lugs. Put his full body weight on it, did a little hop up and down, and nothing. 😂
Former neighbor sold my parents an old Avery years ago that hadn't ran in ages. We towed it over to the back of our property (we were taking it down to my brother for him to work on it) when I got the wild notion to put fuel in and see if it would run. Oil was like new, antifreeze was clean, so put fuel and a battery, pushed the starter and off it went. Started up and simply loped - found the forward gears (2 transmissions) and drove it onto the car trailer to take down to brother. He used it for over 10 years on his property leveling and clearing sagebrush, but I still remember it starting up as though it had only been parked the day before.
Love old tractors. Hopefully we get a video of it fully running down the field.
