The hooks are only carried as a precaution. Keepers do need to protect themselves and the public. In all my time working in the elephant barn, I never saw those hooks used in anything but a precautionary way. Keepers who did otherwise were discharged or reassigned. Bob Lee loves those animals and the keepers and elephants form a close bond, the next thing to being family. The only behaviors they are taught are one that the keepers and vet staff use to inspect them for health problems, such as broken, bad teeth or foot problems. They do not HAVE to do tricks. The Oregon Zoo is an excellent zoo, a leader in elephant husbandry as well as other animals.
It broke my heart when he said Rose was "afraid and didn't know what to do" when Sam was born because she had never SEEN a birth! Elephants aren't equipped to handle that level of stress. They are very emotionally sensitive creatures. I am happy she calmed down and figured it out. Then I lost it when the keeper proudly showed how much exercise the elephants get. In the wild they travel 300 miles a day easily. It's just wrong to keep elephants in a zoo. It's cruel. Their enclosure is 100 times too small for that many elephants. And they are going to have a lot on their hands when Sam is a teenager, the size of his mother, then goes into musth (major hormones burst).
No more than few couple of KM's a day, rarely 10km to 15km a day desert elephant travel 100km to 130km in one season and they come back or go another place suits the season with food
I just reviewed the video of the elephants. My comments were directed towards African elephants who migrate. These are Asian elephants which are not afforded the same freedoms of the African elephants. I mistook the elephants for one another. However, my objections still stand other than the distances the herds can cover. When the keeper said, "these guys need a lot of exercise". I don't think 35-40 mins twice a day walking around their cement enclosure hardly counts as "exercise" or "hard work". I don't think it would qualify as exercise for anyone. And, why do they need bull hooks? Nothing justifies that. The quality of life for these animals is very poor. This is not the victory you tell yourself it is.
@@robinroshto7006 in Africa elephant travel 100 to 130kms per season and most of Asian zoo elephants are come from circus( performance elephants )they can't left them to wild and due to past experience (abuse) they maybe turn bad that's why they're using bull hooks
Yukesh, thank you for continuing to help me with my understanding of Asian elephants. I am in the US and we don't use the metric system here. I need to find someone to translate to fully understand what you are telling me. The Bull Hooks are even more upsetting to me to know that these amazing animals are so traumatized that they could snap inside a zoo enclosure with their keepers. They will never have any quality of life if peace of mind has truly been denied to them.
For centuries the Asian elephants have been used as beasts of burden (see the history of Hannibal) or work animals. Sadly, these animals are being used less and less by their masters as work is getting hard to find. Owners in Asia are turning their elephants loose into the forests to fend for themselves because they cannot afford to feed them any longer. Little Chandra was a rescue as she was blinded in one eye do to an injury she sustained while being driven off plantation lands.
Would you prefer living in your house with your every need met, with no concern about your food or saftey. And absolute guarantee that you would be 100% totally safe from everything that could possibly hurt you for your the rest of your entire life? BUT, in exchange you could never step outside your house for any reason whatsoever for your whole and entire remainder of your life. Or, would you choose to take your chances and live free to come and go as you chose? BUT, what if that choice was taken from you and someone else made it for you? And you HAD no choice but to comply or there would be consciences.
@@robinroshto7006 : WRONG ONES HOUSEBOUND. Lets put the POACHERS, IVORY TRADERS ETC on public display in shackles and control them with bull hooks. Hows about that
Yes they can be released ! Send them to an Elephant Sanctuary such as,"Elephant Nature Park" in Chaing Mai, Thailand. Closest thimg to their natural life as you can get. They are free to roam hundreds of acres of land in natural habitats with rivers to bathe and play in. They make friends and form family units. They receive the best medical care available. Not ever hunted. There are guards to protect them from hunters and poachers The United States has 3 of these kind of sanctuaries also. Even Africa has them.
Oregon Zoo, BULL HOOKS!? SHAME ON YOU!! The animals look otherwise pretty well cared for, but No Bull Hooks! They are not necessary, as has been proved many times in the sanctuaries, where elephants are free to choose contact; they don't have to be hooked or punished for choosing no contact. Rewards works better.
The animals are given rewards for following commands, I know, I worked in the barns for many, many months and I prepared those rewards. The keepers love these animals like family and Bob Lee would have it no other way.
Chains? Hooks? Seriously? Why would this zoo use these measures a captive elephant? Better question, why don't city residents whose taxes probably support this zoo DEMAND better treatment for these ellies? I can't believe the public doesn't care or thinks chains are a good animal management tool. Really disgusting.

OMG ...Soooo cute !!!
Why the zoo keepers carrying the BULL Hooks.? Do they use them on elephants ? I wish they have better things in their hands.
Why do they have hooks?? They don't need hooks food works great. Free the elephants I liked this till I seen them using hooks on them.
Get over it
Pure joy!
Were those keepers holding bullhoooks? We're those elephants trained to do circus tricks? What kind of zoo is this?
yes, don't like the hooks either !! why are they used here???!!! RIDICULOUS PEOPLE !!! ON POWER TRIPS! WALKING AROUND LIKE SOME HOT SHOTS! ASSES !!
Those hypocritical liberal Oregon jackasses need to send the elephants to a sanctuary where they can live free and not have to do tricks

sticks hooks disappointed me,
They all looked well cared and feed. That's what important!! In the wild people would poach them.

Cute as a.... a.... baby elephant!
But do we really need to have elephants in zoos? Don't think so, unless if it's freed from a circus or something.

Samudra is a boy?
Yes,he is. Listening to the video he is a boy.
A baby elephant in the wild would not spend this amount of time on the ground. In a zoo there are no predators.
This announcers voice is enough for me to want to strap him to a chair and gag him good. Almost couldn’t listen past two minutes. 😑 ugh.
