The Denver Nuggets existed for the entire run of the ABA. They were only renamed in 1974 for the purposes of a potential merger. Houston already had a Rockets team that had moved from San Diego

The Spirits of St Louis ( my hometown for all of my 64 years) got 800 million dollars without playing a single game for 35 years.

And I recall them struggling to pull fans in during that painful final ABA season. One game, there were just a few hundred in the Checkerdome. Imagine making more money with no fans than with a few.

Great video! Really interesting topic! Kinda surprised that the NBA chose the market of San Antonio over St Louis for the merger. I mean I guess it probably didn't really matter since basketball back then was really small. I have always like how in the NBA and NHL there is a lot more unique cities with teams (Indiana, Buffalo, Nashville, Portland, Utah, Vegas) and I guess this is because arenas for basketball and hockey are cheaper than a baseball stadium or football stadium. And you also don't need as many people because the arenas are smaller.

thank you! A St. Louis team would be cool. I would love to see Seattle get a team back too, maybe even Vancouver.

Yes but interestingly Buffalo is also an NFL city. Green Bay is unusual for an NFL city as well

@@analogkid4957 yeah those two are both in states with bigger cities you would expect for teams like Milwaukee and NYC. But I guess in the case of the Sabres there is already plenty of sports in NYC, but there are really competiting for a fan base with those teams and some Canadian teams.

@@WaffleLover-my1hi Buffalo post WW 2 was a big manufacturing city so I think I see why it received an AFL franchise at least. It began to decline in population in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. I think the Bills get lots of fans from Ontario Canada so it helps fill the stadiums abs sell merchandise. Green Bay could arguably be the most historical NFL city with the legendary Vince Lombardi Packer teams despite it being a small town. But I heard a lot of their fans cone from the Milwaukee area and other parts of the stare of Wisconsin.

Since the NBA tv deal is set and done and getting ready to talk about expansion, St. Louis has been named one of the cities in considering a expansion team. If they are chosen as an expansion St. Louis fans should be doing everything in their power to bring back the Spirits as an NBA team.

John Y. Brown, who was never a sharp businessperson anyway, missed out on a bonanza. The Kentucky Colonels were vastly more valuable than the shaky Spirits franchise, who had trouble drawing fans and were never ABA title contenders. The Colonels won the 1975 title and were in a basketball mecca. Brown kept trading away Colonel players, changing coach (no relation) Hubie Brown’s lineup almost weekly and driving fans away. The Colonels attendance dropped despite being the defending champions. Yet they were still vastly more popular than the Spirits, and they had Artis Gilmore and Louie Dampier. John Y. certainly could have settled for the type of agreement the Spirits owners got.

The owners of the St. Louis Spirits, the brothers Ozzie and Daniel Silna, struck a prescient deal to acquire future television money from the teams that joined the NBA (New York Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers) 1/7 share from each franchise (or nearly 2% of the entire NBA's TV money), in perpetuity. It was soon after this deal that the era of Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Micheal Jordan began-and hence NBA TV money increased dramatically-with more money to the Silna's. (although the Silna's made a huge amount of money the story goes they also lost a lot of money in the Madoff Ponzi scheme_

I don't know if you know that the only reason why the Pacers got into the NBA is because of Artis Gilmore. The Chicago Bulls owned the NBA rights to Gilmore. So, the merger wouldn't had happened if the Kentucky Colonels were included in the merger alongside the Nets, Nuggets, and Spurs.

Not sure what you’re saying. The players on the Colonel, Spirit and Utah Stars rosters were put into a special draft for the NBA.

@@calamortathis UA-camr talks about the sole owner of the defunct Kentucky Colonels, John Y. Brown Jr., in the video. Like we heard in the clip, Brown used most of the $3.3 million ABA merger settlement to buy the Buffalo Braves.
What I learned is that John soon sold the Buffalo Braves to a NEW owner, and it was that NEW owner who then moved the team to Los Angeles. Brown himself wasn't too much into the business, as he made way more money after buying Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) from Colonel Sanders in 1964.
It's probably why John named his team the Kentucky Colonels. He eventually followed in the footsteps of his father, John Brown Sr., and went into politics.
He was eventually elected Governor of Kentucky. 🗳️
