Founded in 1967 American Basketball Association would only last nine years. But despite the short-lived existence of the ABA, the roots of the NBA as we recognise it today emanate as much from that nine-year period as from anything within the NBA itself.

George Mikan would make a great video himself. He was so dominate they changed the size of the courts and the paint so other teams had a fair chance against him.
George Mikan still played when the league was segregated. I dont really respect his accomplishments as much. The NBA gained a reputation for being a "White Boy League" which is why the ABA was more entertaining to watch. I'm pretty sure George Mikan realized that and thats why he implemented more entertainment as Commissioner of the ABA...

A side effect of the merger that I always find really interesting is the story of the Spirits of St. Louis. As the video mentioned, 6 teams remained in the last season, but only 4 joined the NBA. Now, the owners of the Kentucky Colonels were financially compensated, but the owners of the Spirits decided to make a deal, and get part of the television rights from the 4 teams that got selected.
This was in 1976, so the NBA wasn't as big as it would become, so the 4 teams agreed. The deal then went on for decades, and, with some adjustments, is _still_ going on. The owners' families are still receiving lots of money, and became rich, out of a team that ceased to exist almost 50 years ago.

How good was the ABA? Of the 112 guys who played at least 1 game in their final season, 76 went on to play in the NBA. In addition to the 48 roster spots created by the merger, 28 players, the equivalent of 2 and 2/3rds teams, told existing NBA players to go home and get their shineboxes. The NBA wanted the talent in the ABA, that's why the deal was made.

The ABA Merger really saved the NBA during a decade that was characterized by effective, but franky boring basketball. With superstars such as Kareem which were incredible and dominant players, but by no means exciting on the Basketball court like the standouts of the 60s or 80s.
You had the ABA bringing people like Dr J and Moses in with style and flash and then you had the bird and magic era that was a shot in the arm, then MJ
I would not say the NBA was boring in the 70s.. but certainly the merger was a great overdue thing

The ABA had a brief television contract with CBS. When the league ended there were seven teams. Not six.

I think a new "ABA" will rise within the next 30 years. The current formula of NBA basketball is getting sterile and a new league will probably surge in the next few years that will have different, but still overall similar rules to the NBA, with probably a few innovations to work with the internet, the new generation, and their attention spam. TBT and their Elam Ending rule, BIG3 and their 4 point circles... And, I know it's football/soccer, but recently the King's League too, their format is looking great and I can see other sports stealing that idea.

@wasphern I agree with you because I watch nba it looks fake now when I watch the ABA games it brings back the feel of the fundamentals fair ref calls and rebounds defense and running plays the resurrected aba has brought back the feeling and game of just PURE basketball no gambling no paid off refs or players betting on theyre team to loose or win just PURE 🏀
The ABA gave much of the glitz to the NBA but And1 gave the NBA their attitude.

Nobody talks about the Silnas brothers and their sweetheart deal to approve the merger. Instead of a buyout like the Colonels, they negotiated a deal where they got 1/7 of the television revenue generated by the 4 merger teams. In perpetuity. As of 10 years ago they had received 300 million dollars for doing nothing more than saying "ok."

If not for Rick Barry, the ABA would have been out of business after three seasons.
A "roaring success"? No. But they forced a merger, increased salaries by competing for players, introduced new rules and promotional activities, etc. The NBA looked a lot differently after the ABA than it did before. The ABA was wild and wooly, but it had a lasting positive effect on professional basketball.
Aba had shoot for three point slam dunk contest before nba aba was fun also ball was beautiful only wish colonels ans spirits come as well in nba but nba want onlly four teams

ABA Was better Basketball. Modern Basketball Started in 1967 with the Creation of the ABA. Sure other leagues before it like the ABL and EBL had a 3 point line but those leagues did not last long, no footage that I know of exist of those leagues and no star players from those leagues are known are talked about. So ABA is the Influence!
I did not know that league was not created to "last" but was a "merger ploy"! Either way in a alternate universe, If NBA had Folded and ABA had become what the NBA is today, Nothing in Modern Basketball would change except the jerseys, cities and more talk/respect for the ABA league!

NBA took ideas from ABA and gives no credit to them…they take credit for it themselves (3 pt shot, dunk contest, etc.) XFL started SkyCam, Mic’d players, etc, NFL gives them no credit
