Alec didn't think this one through at all. A round cross section won't make for a good piercer. Bodkin points weren't square for nothing.

  • @thechemist3787

For being myself a rope dart spinner, Alec's dart look more like a real Chinese dart than Will's dart who look more like a throwing knife on a rope than a dart.
To throw the dart more accurately you can pass the dart under your arm pit then over your shoulder and when it's high enough you pull down the rope and release it at the same time. This cause the dart to fly in a straight line and at a high speed.
Anyway great challenge guys your awesome !

@@BestLittleStudio Sorry for my bad explanation lol. In fact, you have to let the dart "wrapping" around your shoulder by passing it under your arm pit. The dart will do a half circle before you pull down with your dominant hand to make the throw. ( don't know if it is more clear 😂)

Hey Alec! Just watched the lathe video. I'm in highschool working precision machines so I picked up on a few things. This is important: we always put the workpiece in and indicate the sides of the workpiece! Then you can fix the wobbly mess and taper along the part via the 4 opposing screws on the outside of the chuck!

I’ve been using my "rope dart" for a few years and if you guys want to be more accurate than I’d suggest a good amount of practice but just as a heads up. If the target is above the waist line then truly to do an overhand throw instead of the underhand throw you guys did
Otherwise you guys did a great job and I hope to see some more content like this one. 👍

They both turned out great! The cylindrical shape is probably the more common type (better aerodynamics) but rope darts are sometimes flat blades too. Excellent work!

If you start from 2-3 feet away and work on the technique of piercing your target then you will have better accuracy as you work your way up to 10-15 feet from there

A little tip for you, guys. You need to think in 2 things when you make a throwing robe-dart. Air resistence and make the robe run for your hand. You spin the dart and throw in a arc, making the robe gentlely pull back the dart caused by the atrict with your hand. Some add in the end of the dart can help to stablelase. Sorry by my terreble englesh, but i think you can understand. Any questions, I'm here

Used to make these out of flat stock in my dad's shop as a kid. I found that the most accurate way to throw them is by throwing the actual knife and the rope only acts to keep the knife/dart flying point first by creating some drag behind the center of gravity. Mine only had a few feet of rope as that was plenty to keep them flying point first.
Later I found that strapping material or a sturdy ribbon worked even better than rope.

Excellent seeing you two take a go at this as always. Gotta admit, they both look good...Will's looks like it's better for piercing into things...but Alec's looks like it'd have more weight behind it. Great fun to see both your takes on the same concept.

    **Edited at the bottom**
At around 3:50 when Alec mentions a “rounded dart” I’m kind of wincing because of the background knowledge I’ve gained on medieval arrows, the armor piercing arrows tended to have sharp geometrical shapes with as much defined edge as possible on their shapes, this was due to the physics involved in puncturing metal. A rounded tip has to force and push its way through a new face of metal at every degree, whereas something shaped like a leaf or a more pyramidal shape only has to cleave through where the edges meet, the faces of the arrow peel itself through.
My terms are all mixed up which might be difficult to understand but basically it’s similar to punching a bucket of water verses karate chopping it and the displaced water represents the amount of work that shape had to exert to achieve the desired effect. You’d notice that the fist, having a more rounded shape, will splash more water compared to the karate chop.
** it just occurred to me that his goal isn’t full penetration but to puncture, and with the weight he seems to be keeping on the piece he should achieve what he wants provided he gets a solid hit.

If you throw the dart over handed it's easier, more accurate, and more powerful!😀 I forged a rope dart out of a wrench, using the wrench hole on one end to put the rope through. It throws great and sticks really good in trees!
