My name is Alec Steele and I am a 22 year old blacksmith from England, now living in Montana in the USA! With a great team of hardworking folks, we upload videos showcasing the projects we get up to here at the workshop. Lots of sparks, lots of making, lots of fantastic-ness. Great to have you here following along!

So I made a ballista...
and then started blasting
@@JoeMama-ss5sy Should that be bal-lasting? Hmmm...
@@Panicagq2 it could
Had alec pushed a piece of cotton or fabric in before the projectile it would have probably worked better. Though what he could have also done is just grab some small tubing and then made a 4 piece break-away to hold the projectile center. Also a decent way to add fins to the bolt.
But is it really a balista? He made it wrong.
"The producers have a challenge for us" is this top gear?
I'm not complaining
That was my first thought too, I would not mind wacky timed challenges from producers, as an upcoming series
You have to make the best ballista... In the world
As long as it doesn't lead to Alec throwing a punch at someone we're probably all right.....
How hard can it be?
To be fair to Will, hiring someone to stab something at a distance is historically accurate.
And it technically wouldn't go against the rules. He wouldn't have hand thrown it at all.
Alec: *panics for 30 minutes*
Will: “Aight, I’m building a crossbow”
Exactly he just built a giant crossbow but Alec used abit more creativity. Alec's mechanics come from the blowdart concept. He just needed the right amount of air pressure.
i was hoping he was going to use the steel wire instead of the bungee chord with flexible steel bolted in place for tension.
Yeah Bunge doesn't actually hold much elastic energy, the energy is in the cross. Bit disappointed he did not understand how a crossbow works
WolfGang *JUST BUILT A GIANT CROSSBOW?* what Will did was a lot more creative than hooking air hoses up to a shooting mechanism like Alec did, And his ‘blow dart concept’ had nothing to do with mechanics unless you were talking about air mechanics which there was not much of.
@@wolfgang7812 what do you mean? Alec was a lot less creative. He also used a modern day air compressor to "cheat" with.
i volunteer to be the target
Normally comments by other youtubers get alot of likes but its been thirty minutes and you're still sitting at 1 like. F
it been 1 week and you at 21

Lol I’m not surprised to see you here lol

Steele:

Steele drills hole and adds air:
This could really hurt someone :o
His royal genes aren't used to guns yet.
He works around machines that could kill or injure him daily and he’s more concerned about a blow dart
you guys should up this one and build a real historically accurate ballista
Lets like so alec can see it
Except they werent made with much metal
And its not really a woodworking channel
I have a friend blacksmith who builds history accurate canons, and he shoots them. The balls go like 3km and one time, he hit a stranger's car, who parked in the middle of the calculated spot. Anyways a ballista would be soo awesome for the exact same reasons
@@reedy_9619 I mean I would still be cool especially watching them figure out the aiming systems. I think it would just be cool to see them make more than just blades once and a while.
@@humwhatever185 And they have so much open space in Montana. So I mean that shouldn't really be a problem, but mabye they could intentionally shoot it at different objects. They could do a collab with Demo Ranch.
Where is Joerg Sprave when you need him?!
Joerg would show them its features. I would love to see a damascus Sliding Legolini.
Steele V Stelter so far:
Alec: 2 (slingshot, centre punch)
Will: 7 (archery, kukri, rope dart, push dagger, throwing star, brass knuckles, bracelet)
Thank you this is what I was looking for
Don’t forget brass knuckles-will
@@ryanflynn7924 oh snap, thanks I will correct it.
It really showcases the difference in their styles. Alec is really big on aesthetics, while will is all about functionality. Given more time they could both make some pretty amazing things, but with a time limit, will has a definite edge.
Info, i keen
“This thing might be lethal”
Me: **glances at all the swords and weapons hanging on the wall** Yeah, maybe
He's not used to lethality at a distance
@No Akomplice ...and if it was to be a slingshot, then the arms do not need to be that wide (and you would get more power if they were shorter because of geometry, when powering using mainly the elasticity of the cord).
Alec a few days ago: *handles a humongous top-heavy sword upright*
No Akomplice Yeah, I was sad when Will went to get the elastic bands but it’s probably best that he didn’t put so much tension on something made in 2 hours 😂
@No Akomplice A better way to do it would be with proper torsion springs. I was SO hoping for that, but this was still fun!

Its 1AM, i should be sleeping, but watching the latest episode of Steele VS Stelter is far more important.
Your god damn right!
Agreed
"Let me show you it's features! HAHAHA"
Stetler's ballista is more like a giant sling shot lol. The steel doesn't bend at all, its just the rubber lol.
Was just about to comment that it wasnt really a ballista but a glorified slingshot.
Ian Zainea if he had used the steel cable with the hoist like he had originally planned it probably would have bowed. I don’t think the bungee could ever reach the right amount of tension to pull the bar due to the nature of the material
@@alextheaxolotl3031 agreed
Calin Yak balistas dont use bending steel either
@@reedy_9619 a balista made out of steel does
Will: Welding ballista frame
Alec: Launching drill bits across the workshop.
The air gun really needs a longer barrel. I know that would be difficult given the tools and the time limit. But a longer barrel would provide more pressure build up and more speed coming out the end of the barrel.
The ballista would have been more powerful if the power was coming from the limbs not the cable. Which is what I thought Will was going for with the steel cable. But I guess the steel he picked for the limbs was a bit thick and inflexible.
Why longer barrel is difficult? why didn't he just took piece of pipe...
@@kozio23 to maximise the pressure from the rear there needs to be virtually no gap between the end of the dart and the sides of the barrel. Given the tools and the time he had, it's physically very difficult to do so as he needed a drill bit over 3 feet long to actually get through. He didn't necessarily have the length of material to do it either.
@Koloth I would have just run some grease through the blowgun to fully lubricate it for the dart. His issue was friction between the sides of the barrel and the dart itself, not so much the length of the barrel which would have helped more with accuracy than actually driving the projectile. Agree with the ballista point though. I though WIll was going to use the steel cable and electric hoist to force the limbs to bend just to the maximum elastic deformation point as that would have maximised the power and accuracy. Literally just aim the bolt straight to the bullseye.
To be fair a traditional ballista got its power from coils of rope around the arms, what will make was less of a traditional ballista and more a mounted crossbow, which was a real thing. having the rubber cables be tighter at the rest position (where they are after it fires) would have given it more than enough power. or using an inelastic cable and bending arms might have given it to much power for them to "safely" test.
@@3darkn1t Take a piece of pipe and use a sabot on the dart. I could have made a sabot in about 5 min out of the delrin stock he had lying around. Or just a shaped delrin plug at the end that fits the pipe and fits the steel stock. Alec could have been done in 30 min with a MUCH better setup.
@@3darkn1t Agreed lubricant would have helped. It would have also made the seal around the shaft tighter so less air could escape around the projectile.
@J.C. cannon I wouldn't really call Will's solution either a crossbow or a ballista. It was more a big slingshot. But that is quibbling over terms. It worked at the end of the day.
This is actually class, like havin the challenge be an end goal instead of like “make a butter knife” it could be “make something to butter bread”. The creative possibilities are endless
The best part about Alec and Will is I honestly can’t decide who I like more. The perfect duo.
Since the balista uses rubber bands, the "bow" becomes useless and does actually reduce the power drastically. The angle at which the rubber bands are pulling is way off the trajectory of the projectile. In other words, to get all the power those bands can give, you need to shorten the bow as much as you can so they're attached close to the rail that leads the arrow. That way, the angle at which they pull is almost the same as the direction the arrow goes.
Pardon my english
La bise from France
That moment when Alec realized that it could really hurt someone priceless 🤣
I think with a more rigid type of rope and a piece of spring steel as a "cross member" (?) (so that the bending of the steel takes the energy instead of the rope) Will's ballista could've been damn lethal.
with a little tweaking it will be... but that would take more time than he had...
Jup, the rubber is the problem, bows work through bow bending, not the rope stretching . He should have used steel cable. But then it could propel a steel pipe through a wall, if the welds hold.
Yeah but you have to keep in mind, this was a bar of steel he was using, doesn't bend so easily, the pneumatic winch might have worked with it if he had a better quick release method, but I would not have wanted to see what would happen when that steel cable would come crashing into his aiming tube, if he had a carved out channel instead of the tube, using steel arms as the energy storage might have worked
i kinda think they were limited on space and dialed it back on purpose, but dialed it back to far.
@@getmeoutofiraq05 I mean they built a whole outdoors "shooting range" so I think they had enough space. I think it's more about the materials, like who has a 2m bar of spring steel and a steel cable just lying around?
Next Steele vs Stelter, the two ones will have 4 hours to make a COMPOUND BOW, these are the rules, each one must make a COMPOUND BOW and a set of 4 ARROWS (their tips need to be forged), the bow must be able to hit a target 50 feet away, whoever gets it first wins
Love your work, its soo much fun to whatch the videos!
I would like to see you guys revisit this challenge, but add 10 hours to your time limit.
Will- You need static bow string, and spring material limbs.
Alec-You need an air reservoir with a dump valve.
I'm starting to wonder how many years you've taken off your property managers' life with all these shenanigans...
They probably added a few with the amount of money they are paying him for all of the different work shops they are renting.

Will: *cuts, shaves, and welds to make a giant ballista*
Alec: *drills a hole in a tube*
What I really like is that because there is s time limit, there is also nop time to set up shots properly. The camera has to be held manually, which is more shaky and has quicker movements. This creates a sense of pressure/urgency for the viewer. Perfect for this format!
"Peaceful devices of joy". LMAO. It's a joy to have you in America where you belong.
kinda like it, kinda scary 😜
Hysterical! Do more challenges like that. “Achieve x goal in y time with z limits” love it. Do some longer ones too like you have 7 days to do this. Or 5 hours. Or 2 days. Could be a ton of fun

Will: builds an insane ballista crossbow
Alec: builds a potato canon
😅
I think if Will used a better "string", he could get more performance from the arms of the Ballista. That is, if the arms are spring steel, I don't know if any other steel would want to flex back.
Yeah the rubber just absorbs the energy of the arms releasing and distributes it more slowly, robbing the bolt of the energy.
The arms are flat, they would bend or break from the innermost part rather than flexing along the whole distance
This is my favorite Steele vs. Stelter so far. Great comedic value too. 😂
You guys need to do stuff like this a little more often. I miss seeing you work on projects together or even competing against each other.
Years ago I was working in a bike shop and made a pneumatic cannon for bike spokes. A 10 foot cooper time worked perfectly. It shot the spokes halfway through a 1/2 sheet of plywood.

Back in high school auto shop in 1987 we made a Ballista from 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1/4 angle iron for the track and a leaf spring from a 72 Nova welded to a piece of I-beam. Used a winch to draw it back. It would put a 24" long x 1/2"" diameter piece of re-bar through a cinder block wall at 50'. We were told to dismantle it.
I thank you for bringing us along on this fun adventure!
A lot of the camera angles in this episode had me worried about proper handling of firearms. I don't want to see angles straight down the "barrel" of anything that can kill one of your staff members. Treat this stuff like a loaded gun.
The editor missed the opportunity for the pornhub music when Alec was brushing.....

I like your ballista. I made one and it was lots of fun do i took it to the next level and added a pneumatic cylinder to redraw the cable for rapid fire. Then added a magazine similar to what the slingshot guy made for his bows and now i have a ballista that fires ten projectiles in 30 seconds. Engineering is fun.
You don't get enough credit for how unreasonably happy it makes me that your Subscription hammer in the lower right corner goes up and down with a mouse over. Mini forge
I want you guys to finish these builds. For the blow gun they sell an air tank for setting the bead on Semi truck tires. It just blasts around 150 psi in one shot.
For the crossbow you could do better on the string, and add a slight recurve to the arms.

We use spacer inside the spindle of the lathe to stop the shaft from vibrating. This might help you maintain the drill center position.
That was brilliant, it had the feeling of being very anticlimactic... but then Stelter saved it with a bullseye!! Awesome job guys.
For the blow dart a larger diameter hose and a remote valve and deadmans handle from a blast pot would have worked well.
