Magnetizing Knights - Chaos AND Imperial (they're pretty much the same)

  • With the new Chaos Knight Army Box that has the new Knight Abominant I thought I'd share just how easy it is to magnetize all the Big Knights, Chaos and Imperial.
    All you need is 8mm round by 2mm thick magnets, one for the shoulder joint and 2x for every weapon you want to magnetize.
    Oh and you'll need something to remove the piece from the shoulder, the Tamiya Saw is the best I've found.

    This has to be the best video on knight magnetising a knight I have seen to date, solely because you show where to built upto for the arms unlike a certain spikey bit and the shoulder as a key and also the best way to get them ready and for the other magnets is something I probably would have done and questioned myself over but seeing it here makes me less anxious because you did it and it looked good.

    Thank you for you magnetizing guide, it's given me the confidence to grab and start my own knight army. As i've started magnetizing i've found that, on the armigers, all you need is the 5mmx2mm magnets for the guns and, using a 5/32's drill bit will fit a 4mmx2mm magnet perfectly

    For a stronger pull and longer effective magnetisation of the magnets themselves, it helps to have a nailhead circle on the "gun" and "armor plates" instead of another magnet, that way the polarity isn't lost over time as it's just magnetic pull in one direction, and not in both.

    • @GoodEnoughWargaming

      You can, doing the different barrels to the common chassis isn't that hard. The gap is big enough so you can stick fairly large magnets in so it won't fall off. Out of curiosity what size did you use for the sheild and small gun? Also what size did you use in the waist?

    • @GoodEnoughWargaming
      @GoodEnoughWargaming  Рік тому +1

      The small gun and shield are ready enough, if you look at the small part you glue on to hold the gun/shield there's a small indent on the top you glue a magnet into. I think I did 4mm. Then you snip the part that would go into the holder off, and glue a little magnet on top. I think it's 2mm. You should get a few 2mm, 3mm and 4mm magnets for your magnetising tool box anyway, so you just check to see which is best.
      The body is simple too. You use a file to open the hole in the bottom of the body so a 6mm magnet with juuuuust fit through. Then you glue a big magnet on the inside of the body over the hole. Like 10mm x 2mm. Then you can file down the round dome on the legs until a 6mm x 2mm magnet can be glued on top to fit and connect to the magnet on the body.
      Honestly, it's probably not worth it. If you want to transport Knights get a really useful box big enough to hold them and put them in that for transport.

      The green is my own method. What you do is paint a base coat of a bright metallic silver. Then you use acrylic gloss medium mixed with a drop or two of artist acrylic ink. You thin that to go through an air brush and carefully build up a layer of that on top of the silver.

    The paint scheme on that knight is perfection. How did you do it?

    • @GoodEnoughWargaming
      @GoodEnoughWargaming  2 роки тому +2

      The basic idea is ready enough but it can be a bit tricky to get used to do practice on a few pieces/models you can easily strip down.
      What you do is start with a metallic base layer, brighter the better but you can use darker shades in the recesses or give it a nuln oil gloss shade.
      Then you take a gloss acrylic medium and add some artists ink to it. You want transparent inks if you can. You don't need much, just a few drops per blob of medium. I used a spare dropper bottle to mix it up. Think they were 15ml. Been a while since I did it so might be off on the ratios, but iirc I filled the dropper bottle about a third full of medium then added a few drops of ink. Then topped the bottle up with distilled water.
      I used it in an airbrush so it was further thinned in that. You need to do multiple thin coats to get the effect. I was planning on revising it for a video at some point so I'll do more experimentation for that.

    • @GoodEnoughWargaming

      No. The normal build instructions mean you glue the gun around the shoulder post, to magnetise you cut the end off the shoulder post and replace it with a magnet then you put a magnet inside the gun where the shoulder post would usually be (making sure to watch out for the polarity of the magnets).

    Hello, i'm having a bit of an issue. It turns out that when you cut the shoulder joint piece to place a magnet, there is a bit of a hole underneath. But since the magnet is slightly bigger, i think that it should stick as yours do. However, i cannot get the magnet glued on there in a solid way : when i stick one of the magnetized weapons, the magnet from that weapon always seems to pull the shoulder magnet with it despite the glue.
    Is this a problem with my glue? Should i use a stronger glue? Or is there something i missed?

    • @GoodEnoughWargaming
      @GoodEnoughWargaming  Рік тому

      What sort of glue are you using? Super glue (ca glue) is what you need to stick the magnet.
      If the hole is a problem, you could either fill it with green stuff or find a magnet that just fits in the hole (you might need to file it a little) then you glue the magnet into the hole then glue the larger magnet on top.

      the chaos knights have similar layouts to the imperial ones, so if you magnetize then you can run them as either.
      if you want them to look chaos then you'd need to do some conversion work. but it';s chaos so just remove any imperial insignias and add more spikes.
      What you can do is try swapping the legs around. the torsos are interchangable so you can use the new leg style from the chaos kit and the torso from the imperial kit and make a different look. it;s annoying how they did the legs of the imperial knight kit so they all look the same...

      Magnets will break if you let them bang together with to much force. If you're getting ones that break just by handling them, you might have a bad batch.
      I usually just get the cheapest ones from Amazon and I haven't had too many break.

    what kind of superglue did you use for the magnets, im assuming its not plain ol' plastic cement right?

    • @GoodEnoughWargaming
      @GoodEnoughWargaming  Рік тому +1

      No, plastic cement won't stick to the magnets. Super glue is the genetic term used in the UK for cyanoacrylate (CA) glue.
      Basically if it'll glue your fingers together when you mess up, it'll do the job ;)

      I did a video on magnetising the normal armiger Knights, the wardogs are pretty much the same.
      ua-cam.com/video/em34mw4ZuXs/v-deo.html
      You can swap weapons back and forth between the armigers and the wardogs. It's a nice design.

    you said you stopped yourself from magnetizing the heads, but how would you go about doing them. the chaos abominant has SEVERAL variant masks.

    • @GoodEnoughWargaming
      @GoodEnoughWargaming  2 роки тому +1

      You can't really do the masks. I was more talking about the actual head by gluing the ring it goes in into place, gluing a magnet on top then cutting that part of the head and replacing it with a magnet as well, so it would just set into place.
      The masks can't really be done.

    • @UntiltedName
      @UntiltedName 2 роки тому +1

      I settled on using a small blob of poster tack to change out masks. It works fine, and with varnish on the face/forehead you won't pull paint. It might droop after like...a few weeks of not being touched. But for changing masks for a game, or because maybe you used a relic mask, whatever your reasoning is, it will stay in place for the game for sure.
      Originally I looked at magnets but it was too janky. I saw a guy on reddit do it, the forehead had what looked like a 3mm magnet right on the brow. His masks were interchangeable but if he wanted to do maskless, the face was ruined.

      So long as the weapons are in the kit. I think the imperial knight crusader kit has them all in there, and this method will let you swap between all the ones in that kit (and whatever else you can source, like third party ones or 3d printed or whatever)
