There's not a single reviewer for this car that doesnt smile while driving it
I've watched a bunch and noticed it as well : )
I have driven it a lot of times , my fiancee owns one ( 6M ) and it is simply the best balanced , well behaved and responsive car I have ever driven ; it is literally like having a conversation with the road . It is not about power or speed but the pure enjoyement of driving . The reason I don't own one ... Well , I am waiting for the Miata fastback .... something that looks exactly like the current model but with an usable trunk because the retractable top mechanism renders the trunk space useless .
This car makes people smile? What about the 718s or better car?
@@yi-sianchen2161 more power doesnt mean better, I have a BMW M5 with 600hp, and yet Miata still is more fun to drive. Miata is all about being one with the car
@@yi-sianchen2161 some "better" cars aren't more fun, as their price worries you or they might perform amazingly on track buy not on the street
I bought a 1990 MX-5, and fell in love. So I bought 2019 MX-5 3 months later. The 3 reasons I bought them are, FUN, FUN, and FUN. I had forgotten how much fun driving could be, after driving SUVs and trucks. Thanks Mazda for jarring my memory.
Hell yeah man this car gives me 90's fastback vibes
Is it reliable
My Dad had an MG when I was a kid. I never actually drove it just a passenger but the second I drove the MX5 it reminded me of that old MG 100% it was crazy. Wasn’t even thinking abt it at the time. Bought one the same day.
@@aacc2216 www.autotrader.ca/newsfeatures/20191126/top-10-most-reliable-cars-you-can-buy-for-2020/
What about the maintenance does it expensive for 1990 miata ???
1. Relatively inexpensive
2. Reliable
3. Super fun in nearly all driving conditions
Could also be talking about the mr2 roadster as well.
@@dinono10 MR2 ain't cheap to maintenance n reliable ...
or i might get lemon mr2
Outdoor Layne who needs ankles anyway
Its very expensive... Wth u talking bout
Dino Riyami , if you want an old car with old tech
1. Fun to drive
2. Beautiful car
3. Never underestimate an old lady with a 6-speed!
your absolutely right!!!!!
"Availlable with a manual transmission"
The MX5 NEEDS a manual transmission. It's way more fun that way
I have one with the manual transmission México it's the simple version
exactly
I have the new 2019 RF club. Love it! Fits me like a glove!
1. Handling is precise
2. 6spd manual transmission is flawless
3. Sounds awesome
4. Looks so sexy
5. The RF roof is so cool!
I just bought my second MX-5 this week. It's an RF-GT. The first was a 1993 that I bought new.
After driving Hondas for the past 12 years, including an S2000 that I parted with in 2014, I needed a fun car again. The handling, the design and the reliability were all factors in the decision. I was also looking at the Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth. I love the retro styling as I had a 1974 Fiat 124 Spider back in the 1970's. For me the final reason for choosing the MX-5 RF GT was the reliability factor.
I’ve owned two Corvettes, three Porsches , and two Miatas. Hands-down, the Miatas have been the most satisfying and fun to drive of all those cars. I really don’t know now why I purchased the others! I never really needed the power of those other cars and I didn’t race them on the track. I recall paying over $300 for oil changes on my Porsches, I paid $17 at the Mazda dealership for oil and filter changes!
Found myself a 2017 RF GT with only 4k miles in it and ended up buying it.
Best car ever, love it.
Now I spend my days smiling whenever I drive it, even through traffic to work.
Isaias Sanchez what did you pay
Ur so lucky
If you’re like me and you know you won’t be driving your MX-5 on a given day, you’ll drop down to the garage just to pay it a brief visit.
Got the launch Edition rf picked up with only 6k love it!
I visit it when I don't drive lol!
Every time I watch a Miata video the driver is literally always smiling
Probably he is high.
@@johntechwriter High on those roadster vibes
"Drives like a go-kart". Exactly my reaction too, the first time I drove one 20 years ago. What a blast.
More reliable than Porsche, BMW, etc. :)
@@arricammarques1955 More reliable than Honda S2000.
@@Hboogie182 MX 5 roadster surpasses Porsche Boxster, cost of ownership & reliability.
That is my typical reply. And that is a very very good thing.
@@arricammarques1955 Uhhh
I feel like you've never owned a boxster. I've owned both a boxster and a ND miata over the last ~4 years, and while I daily drive the miata, the boxster is just as reliable. About the same number of trips to the shop as the ND, only problem is it does get the porsche tax applied to it in shops.
But as far as problems go, both cars have been rock solid.
I'm 6ft4 and have the same model. A note for taller people - the seats over a few weeks will sink in a little and give you an extra inch or two :) love this car

MIATA MAKE IT A TOPLESS AFTERNOON!
I wish I could like this comment twice
Gorgeous in the blue. I love red as well but the blue is really unique and classy.
I sold a C7 Z51 for an ND Miata Club and I prefer driving the Miata. No substitute for light weight my Miata is over 1000lbs lighter than my Corvette. And it feels it.
trade a 12 sec. car for a 15 sec car.............what an upgrade............
I had a 1990 Miata for 19 years and I currently have a 2009 Miata. I drive it year round in Edmonton, Canada where we have most months of the year in snow. They are amazingly balanced which you feel when driving, you always feel in control of the car (car and driver as one), and like you said, it puts a smile on your face every time you drive. Thank you for this review.
Proven reliability, far superior than Porsche Boxster! :)
Yo him standing next to that make it look like toy

why do u support this guy! didnt u see his giveway video spam? u guys needs a life

@@Dani-cf1oy why are you here then?
Nah, the Suzuki Cappunccino and Honda Beat is where its at.
The response, Timing, Acceleration, Handling, Beautiful Music going thru the gears.
I absolutely adore this 2400 lb Roadster!! And, just look at the engine bay!! You can actually see everything !! No dumb looking plastic engine covering!! 👍🏻
It’s got to be the prettiest 4-banger on the market. Beautiful polished metal cam cover. The black exhaust manifold looks like a racing header. And there’s no forced induction hardware cluttering the engine bay.
The center air vent was a clever way for Mazda to mimic the tail light design..
???
There's not a single Owner that I have either seen online or come across that isn't smiling constantly.. :
Mike, that car looks like a lot of fun. I have a couple of buddies who drive them and they say they are a hoot to drive (and track). One recommendation is that you wear your lapel mic on this drive. The audio was subpar in sections. I think that could improve things a bit. Thanks for the review!
it's been great to watch you enjoying the car:) thank you for the review. like you said, you need to drive this car to understand what's with all the fuzz about it. I vividly remember my first test drive in august 15. It was like nothing I've ever driven before:so easy to drive, nimble, so willing to play, amazing controls: clutch, acceleration, steering. I've owned and driven many cars and they all lack something crucial: either they only come automatic transmission(Alfa 4c), either have turbos(and lag) ,average gearbox, dull steering, too stiff suspension etc. Ultimately, Mx-5 ND feels purpose built and doesn't share components with other mazda cars. This makes it feel unique and special
Amazing review, thank you very much! Keep making videos like that
I have always like the Miata. Thanks for reviewing 2019.
The new RF is just a wonderful car. The increased power has made MX-5 just that much better. I bought mine a few months ago and that smile just won’t go away. The one criticism I have that unlike the earlier NC that has a PRHT which is a full convertible the RF is a Targa roof, so to keep the best of both worlds I kept my NC as well😊.
Took my 2017 out of dry dock after a long Canadian winter .. this car is a blast ..I own the soft top.. awesome vehicle and at 6ft tall it fits me perfectly
I have daily driven my 2016 MX5 for two years and it is hands down the most fun car I have ever driven the way it makes you feel like every time I drive it I’m in a race , rowing up and down through the gears is excellent, and the roar of the little engine is hysterical.
I recently traded in my 2017 Grand Tour RF for a 2019 because of its new safety features, more HP , Telescopic Steering and the GS package. NOW, I finally have the car I wanted from the beginning. I also got a Manual this time and I like it. Although, there was nothing wrong with the automatic. I'm 5'11" and the car fits perfect. I don't see how its possible to drive this car without a smile on your face. I live in the Pocono Mts. so we get snow. I have a 2018 Kia GT2 AWD for the non-roadster days. Both these cars are required , if you really want to enjoy retirement.
That's a really good set of cars
This car is a whole new beast if you take it to the mountain pass for drifting
Got a 1996 miata and I tried the new one. They are insane for a car guy that want really good time on the road. Have a good day Mike
This is the best Miata review I’ve seen. As an owner of a 2007 I can say you are right on about how us owners are. I love this eternal blue as well, you did amazing with the cinematography and drone shots at the beginning. That was really cool mixed in with the music!
Really nice little car. Great review JEFE 🙌🏼
This color looks amazing on this car
Thanks for the review, definitely helped me with my research. Happily driving my 2019 eternal blue RF GT ;)
That intro sequence was class mate, loved it.
When I hit my midlife crisis , I’ll be getting one of these.
No, you will be getting a corvette. That's what midlife crisis is about
As a person going through midlife crisis, this is a therapeutic car to drive
Is 35 close enough to mid life to get one? 🤔
I got my father through his midlife crisis by getting him to stop putting gti parts on his nongti golf and get a proper gti in 2016. And had him get a 92 miata with 60k miles at the time. Needless to say i think he faired a lot better than a new Mustang or corvette he kept looking at
I am in my midlife crisis. Kids grown considering this for sure. 🥂🍹
Everyone who tests this car gets that smile
Awesome car review love the content keep up the great work
I have a 2007 GT and it still is such a pleasure to drive. I can't wait to get my hands on a new one!
So many manufacturers have got newer versions of older cars so wrong (Toyota Supra), but Mazda have just got the Miata perfect. It evolved through many generations to get to this point and is still just as good looking and fun to drive as the original. If only more brands delivered a line of cars this consistent.
I ordered mine will be here in 8 weeks from Japan in a machine grey metallic color GT RF with (manual transmission obviously) and i can not wait till it gets here I am counting on it as probably being the best car that I have or will ever own great review Mike Thank You for sharing this.
Have one. Love it. I am sure you'll love yours as well..
Watch out for that smile as you won't stop doing it.. :)
This will be my next car. Have had 3 miatas, 2 NA's and currently an NB for daily drivers. Solid review !
Awesome video Mike!
Got a 2019 BBS Club in black. Just got it back from getting roll bar installed and it looks amazing. Taking her to the track next month!
My reasons for loving the Miata
1. convertible
2. probably the most fun car you can ever own
3. I wanted it damn it!
4. More reliable than Porsche! :)
meanwhile in my country, the Miata/MX-5 is only available in Automatic transmission, and that means no LSD, I just curious why Eurokars, why?
Its no longer boring going from point A to point B. The Attention you get on the road, parking lots and everywhere you go..you even get thumbs up sometimes..the handling is superb..
Also the whining sound is awesome, even on my 2007 I hear the whining supercharger sound and it’s one of my favorite features!
That genuine smile. I switched to a 2013 lexus isc convertible and barely get any smiles no matter if I drive top down or sport mode. 1 smile a week in Lexus vs 1 smile every shift in the miata. I miss my 95 so much.
I've owned three generations of Miatas (currently a PRHT NC) in sequence. As I've matured, and live in a metropolis; I decided on an automatic (I still SMILE). Nonetheless it lacks that notable third gear supercharger whine??? I still LOVE IT, and vow to own one AS LONG AS I LIVE!
I used to own one and they are so much fun without breaking speed limits👍👍👍
It is "engaging" and a real driving experience. Makes you smile every time you drive it.
As the Owner of a stock 94 FD RX-7 i can only say that Mazda had the ultimate sports car and let it go, the perfect power to weight ratio, perfect balance, perfect sounds. They have been playing catch up ever since. Love the channel.
I wish Mazda would get their shit together. The RX-7 Is the *PEAK* of automobile sexiness. The new Miata just looks meh. Who has 35,000 for a freaking Miata?! Lame.
Looks like a ton of fun. It should be your next project to mod!
Appreciate the comments on height and fit in the car. Also such a gorgeous blue. Thanks for the review
The Mazda Miata RF looks like a decent roadster but I have never been a big fan of Mazda, only the Miata & CX-9.
Keep up the great work Autovlog!
The noise is when the second “sports cam” engages! It’s a double overhead cam shaft engine with variable valve timing.
No, it is not. It's the sound tube. Also, it doesn't have VVL only VVT.
@@johnathanyinger ow so that's what that noise is i was always wondering why Toyota Honda civic and i never knew Mazda made that sound aswell it sounds so cool doe
I'm pretty sure it's transmission noise, I have a car that does that in 3rd+ gear and you can tell it's from the transmission
@@TheFPSPower my dad's citroën makes a whining sound at 3rd gear. It is a shitbox tho so I always assumed it was broken or something 😂
@@johnathanyinger sound tube doesn't come in the GT unless they changed that and if you get the GT-S they add the sound tube like the club.
MX5 Miatas are just the best fun. Even the old ones
was the height issue a deal breaker? were you comfortable on 2-3 hour drives in the miata rf?
im about half an inch taller than you and would love to buy one...
At 6'1" I can dream of this car again!
Thanks for posting a great video.
This may sound silly, but my 1998 Mazda Protoge has a pretty fun steering itself.
Not silly at all, most Mazdas have been really enjoyable to drive. Miata is just the pinnacle of their driving spirit
I wander why they can't get the same power per litre as an old honda s2000.
I have a 2017 RF and love it. I am also blessed to live in Golden, Colorado where I can take trips in the Rockies. Please look for some interesting roads to drive this jewell. What a great car. At lease drive some traffic circles with no need to slow down. Wow!! So much fun.
Sharp car. Love to have this as a weekend toy and start the mods.
Not a Mazda fan but love the video!!
I own two miata's They are just the best! Reason 1 FUN, 2 FUN, 3FUN
Howdy, great review as always!
I have one of the first 500 RF’s launched. Would not trade it for anything! Love it so much!
Seeing you drive it from outside is so funny 13:38 lool
Is this a good car for daily commute? I drive 45 mins both ways every day thru congestion and some highway also
Rodo Sobarzo I’ve owned my 2017 MX-5 RF for over a year now in Utah. Summer and Winter snow. I have a 15 min drive one way commute and it’s been great. I’ve also done 2-3 hour drives in which I get tired, but I would be tired regardless of what car I drove if it was for 2-3 ours. As far as shifting goes it makes it less boring even in traffic for me.
Why would you torture yourself with a manual in traffic honestly😬
It is. And clutch is smooth and with great travel so will be a joy.
Cris driving this car in traffic is NOT a torture. It has the best clutch I’ve ever use in a car. And I’m from South America where everybody drives manual shift cars. Here in America people are getting more and more lazy.
I have a soft top ND . TRUST me, you will arrive at work with a smile on your face. Get a manual.
Hello
Wow great video!!!
Great Cinematography! Great editing! Great audio! Great product knowledge! Great colorization!
All the best Shaun of NYC.
My husband bought a used 2014 Mazda MX-5 a few years ago, but it was automatic and he didn't like that, but at the time, I could not drive a manual car. He mainly bought it because it had really low mileage and he wanted me to enjoy driving it. He traded that one in for a new 2017 Mazda MX-5, that one was a manual and my husband taught me to drive it. It took me about three days to drive it without killing it. 😊 A week later, I started driving it to work everyday. We have since traded that one in for a 2021 model. I sure enjoy driving it as well. Now he's looking for another one for him to drive as well. This car is so MUCH FUN!!
It’s like driving a go cart!!! My next question is... how does a 6ft+ Swedish bloke fit into a little Roadster?? Brilliant video as per usual 👍
I'm just under 6' 2'' and I have just enough room overhead
I'm 5 10 and 170lbs and im perfrct inside.
The fit depends on whether your legs are long. If they are, the telescoping steering wheel will help you get comfortable. But if your torso is long, you will end up looking at the windshield frame. It’s best just to sit in one and see!
@@johntechwriter I’m 6’0 and 180lbs and really hoping I fit ok! We shall see
Mazda is starting to become one of the best makes out there with their interior quality and innovative drivetrains
Great review and a great car.
I purchased it’s cousin the 124 Spider in 2017 to drive in Andalucia (Spain)
The car with it’s Miata underpinnings is as you would expect a fun to drive.
Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
10/10 to Mazda.
Peter Butler.
Even me watching him drive it makes me smile
Top 3 reasons

As I've seen a lot of videos of you driving cars with over 400hp, I was anticipating that you weren't going to appreciate this lightweight car, but I was glad that you pleasantly surprised me. 2:40 As a Japanese guy, I would have to say that the Suzuki Cappuccino and Honda Beat are more of what we would call 'Tiny' compared to the MX-5 RF (or Roadster RF as its called in Japan). But anyways, great video and keep up the awesome work!
Running early 91 w/300k. Won some autocross, and it is still Stock E class. It is lighter, and I found that getting rid of the extras made it even greater to drive, 2000 lbs, and even though only 118hpr original, I can let up going into turn, under steering, down shift and power through turns leaving even the newer Miata's behind. However, it is not speed that makes me smile, but the ride and handling, hair blowing wildly in the wind!
Very nice and fun video. Three reasons why I love mine?
First because it's such a beautiful car for a reasonable price
Second because it's so much fun a drive and it gives you sensations all the time at reasonable speed (speeding here in France is not a good idea)
Third because it's very easy (and cheap) to tune and customize.
Now u need to drive a 2019 ragtop and experience complete Miata greatness
also try an NA with turbo kit .
Would love to see your take on a well kept s2000.
It's also one of the most fun cars to drive in automatic. Don't let the haters prevent you from getting one! Better than any other small automatic car.
Bought the 2020 RFGT and it is a jewel! 5 reasons I bought it: personality, reliability, accessories, mods available, incredible driving experience
So what's up with the F150?? I bought a 2016 F150 and I'm thinking about supercharging it but wanting to see if that was what made your truck break down!?
02:16 Are we not going to discuss that thumb?
This was like watching a Viking review a 9th century 2 man scouting vessel. Fantastic review.
I saw and sat in one in a auto expo. I am also 6'2" and is small, but I didn't feel too cramped. The seats are so awesome it makes you feel home. The steering wheel diameter feels small and I liked that too. I just imagine it with a 13B engine revving up to 9,000 rpm
I like that lil roadster...to bad it’s not big boy friendly 😂.
Depends on how big of a boy it is. I am 6ft 220lbs and I fit in them easily. One of our techs is 6ft and about 350lbs and he can fit in it and drive it.
The car and the driver are always smiling😁
Great review Mike, and a cool little car.
🚙🙏🏻🚙Awesome review Mike!! I agree the Miata is one great sports car!! I love any video of yours and it is entertaining when you do reviews too!! Keep up the amazing work brother!! God bless!🙏🏻🚘🙏🏻!
Drove the car 50’ in a straight line “ the car is so nimble” lol
Did it occur to you that he drives the car BEFORE the video was made, so he can comment as thoughts hit him? He’s not classifying it as nimble from 50’ of driving.
He says "this is the highest selling roadster of all time" yet I didn't even see him open up a laptop to check that.
See how stupid your comment sounds now? lmao
Landon Dodd ya it was a joke
@@mamba109 it is the best selling roadster of all time. It's been out since about 1990.
I don’t fit in one 😅 as 6.6 - 2m...
Did you try the Miata NC? :)
I am a older subscriber that owns a 2013 cx5...wife and I stopped by and said hello to you one day. Would have loved to own one of these..but like you am 6'2 and was way to cramped..c'mon mazda little more head room please. Love owning a mazda..since the changes are always so subtle they look new forever. Keep up the great reviews (neighbor)..wife and I always get a kick out of figuring out where you are filming at.
There’s really only one reason. The most fun for the money. I have a 1997 NA model. The last year of the pop up headlights. I’m not ever going to get rid of it.
Cheap to own and maintain, good in gas and it’s a blast in the mountain curves.
Not a miata fan but I got to appreciate that Mazda is keeping it small and not fattening it up like modern cars.
Can you keep calling it a compact car when a 2019 civic is almost the same size of a 2002 accord?
Because the civic is still in the compact category hence why its called a compact.
It’s a great car but I’m not a fan of the retractable roof. It ads weight, is a whole bunch of complex, moving parts just waiting to break and it doesn’t offer true, open cockpit, top down driving. I tested the 2018 RF and it felt claustrophobic compare to the true drop top version. Plus the wind buffeting and noise was actually worse, even at slower speeds. It has to be a ragtop to be a true Miata!
I’ve owned 2 ragtop Miatas and I’m a fan of the RF; offers a bit of shade for southern summer evenings, I like the simultaneous feeling of being in and out when the top is down - makes me less self conscious about driving such a great ride. Been here since 1990 so my bonafides are solid . So, “It’s not a true Miata without a ragtop and the RF is the best Miata of all”. True ‘nuff
If you're looking for a compromise between a rag and hard top, yes, the RF is the way to go. You like being slightly enclosed, I like being immersed in my surroundings and having no blind spots (and the RF has two big ones). If you've been driving Miatas since 1990 and getting older I can see how the extra creature comforts appeal. I've been in them since 94 and the lack of a true open cockpit just made it feel like a different car. I guess I'll be a wind and noise in my face kinda guy until the day I die!
9:47 That wire was so close to getting hooked. Great review, looks like a very fun car!
I've been in love with the Miata since the 90s. Sadly, I haven't been able to own one yet, but I'm saving up for a lightly used gen 4 Club, hopefully in the next few years. I've driven each iteration, except the gen 4 and all are amazing.
