My Full Wash Process: How to Wash a Car the OG Way

  • I made this video specifically for the guests who stay at the Destination OG House in Helen and choose to borrow the car, but I figured I'd share it here with you all as some may find it useful. I go through step by step how I wash a car, and how I expect those who borrow the car to maintain it. The purpose of this is to give an opportunity to those who stay at the house an opportunity to use all of the stuff, enjoy a wash on a dialed in car, in a dialed in garage. Pretty darn amazing if you ask me!

      I'm the kind of person who uses multiple 400+GSM edgeless towels to clean the exterior in my wash to prevent any contamination. 1 towel per panel, then wash with all the other towels in some P&S R2R (presoaked in some APC). Matt's 2-bucket way definitely is great and I do it myself time-to-time. But doesn't mean there aren't other sufficient ways of getting the job done for sure! All depends on how and who they learn from, right?

    As a detailed oriented, former military aviation maintenance specialist and aerospace engineer of 23 years, working for NASA, I’ve been providing technical instruction and teaching folks how to build spacecraft to the highest standards (which I help write) at my full time company and at community colleges, for a long time and I have to say, you don’t need to be an asshole and call people “idiot” or “moron” to get the point across. Explaining the deleterious or harmful consequences of not following the process, while engaging your audience in ways that truly resonate with them is probably going to win you more of those followers you’re hoping for. Not many desire to listen to abrasive angry dad voices for 45 minutes. Maybe explain why you love doing this, why you love the car and hope to keep it in its best condition for as long as possible. Trust me, I know where you’re coming from. It’s taken me years to remove the asshole from my speech. Hoping this helps.

This is beyond hilarious. I'd like to see a video of a guy doing this. Don't forget to clean the house to specs too. The grease on the outdoor grill needs to be scrubbed. You don't need to be OCD to wash a car. Just follow instructions. However, not shrinking the label sizes by now, is holding on to a bad idea. I don't use the screws to hold down the buckets any longer. Couple gallons of water and they stay put, just fine. Plus, I rinse the buckets before and after each use, so I'm constantly removing them from the cart. The tightening screws are of no value to me.

    Only step I would add is foaming or rinseless spray before rinsing with water. If the car is dirty and you just hit with high pressure your rubbing dirt around that could scratch the paint. But then it’s like, where do you stop? Plus car is white so not too bad. Usually we use Gtechniq Citrus APC sprayed on the car and then rinse, or if the car is not too dirty, then ONR or McKees rinseless works great.

    @illiyakuryakin3092 4 місяці тому +2

    Pro Tips: Wash the lower parts of the body (Door jams, rocker panels, diffuser) AFTER you wash the rest of the car. Even with your two bucket method (Where you barely rinse the wash rag), you are dragging dirt onto the hood, upper doors, and rear deck lid. Drain the hose BEFORE you put the “PP” end cap on. This will make rolling up the hose easier and you will have fresh water to wash the car with next time. Before you get out of the car, apply the parking brake. This will cause less strain on the transmission paw. Note how much the car rocked when you took your foot off the brake. NEVER throw your wash rag on the ground even after you are finished with the car wash. Why take a chance of adding abrasive dirt to it?

    I love how detailed and particular you are about keeping everything nice! I’m the same way; it’s really hard with 3 rug rats running around my house, but I keep my Bimmer clean though!
    Sorry it looks like you have some real lazy people that have stayed in the house - but that’s gonna happen. Unfortunately not everyone subscribes to “leave it better than you found it” methodology!

    Have always enjoyed the vids; started watching wayyy back with the white 911 cleaning videos. Matt - I bought the Ego for drying at your recommendation. I only had to do it once to realize it couldn't possibly be the best solution. I was so freaked out holding the damn thing over the car and was so worried about dropping it I never used it for that again. Instead I went and got my self a dedicated dyer - the BigBoi Blower Pro - and it is legitimately my favorite thing in a room full of specialized car car cleaning products (mostly purchased from OG). Hope to see you recommend it or a similar type product soon -- there's no questioning its superior to the Ego method. Thanks as always for the content!

      @jtex1013 8 місяців тому

      to each their own I suppose. I have absolutely no complaints about the BB stuff (beyond the hose getting dirty but that's cleanable). I just couldn't live with myself if for some reason I managed to drop a heavy ass Ego blower on my car while drying it. Btw, we still get plenty of use out of the Ego blower + stubby -- sits down in our pool shed and we use it to blow off the deck. Great for that! @@ObsessedGarage

    Maybe its something you do when the car is a little bit dirtier but when I wash I always leave the bottom ten inches of the car and then go around the car again to get those bits as they are usually carrying a lot of heavy dirt. It helps preserve the paint.

    Excellent video, and car! I have been using GYEON Quartz Wet Coat just before drying, and that product is put on the vehicle during rinse. I see your Drying Aid is done post-rinse. How does your OG product differ in terms of the end result? I can see one of the side benefits as you showed, using the Drying Aid almost like a speed detailer against the remaining [bug] spots, etc.

    Man, I suffer so bad of rotor rust after a wash. Literally by the time I wash the next wheel, there is rust forming. If I blow the rotor with my ego blower, I can watch rust form before my eyes. If I went as long as you went, they’d be fully rusted by then. The problem is the next time I brake, my wheels then look orange from the dust. I’ve tried Hyde’s rust serum, and it helps a little bit, but not great. Maybe it’s this florida hard reclaimed water?

I've been using grit guards in my buckets for years but I just got one of the Dirt Lock inserts and the quality difference is huge and it has a better fit (thanks to the rubber bushings) in one of my buckets that is ever so slightly larger in diameter that my grit guard would move around in.

    Foam..then rinse. then foam again for the contact wash with buckets
    I thought you liked doing things the OCD right way , to prevent any possibility of scratching. just pressure washing dirt off a dry car could possibly scratch
    .. so don't do it unless the surface is lubricated. that's like not using a drying aide when towel drying, it could cause a scratch but probably won't if you're using new clean drying towel.

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  8 місяців тому +2
